Some weird stuff has been happening the past few days. Any search for it just brings up data recovery threads. Anyway...
A few days ago, i took some pictures with my phone. I sent them off via whatsapp and went on my own business.
When i went back to look at the picture i had taken, The phone "deleted" it. With my past experience of large capacity folders,
I proceded to my root explorer to rename my camera folder (to Camera2, and the old "camera2" folder to "camera3") and took a
few random pictures to allow my camera app to create a new folder. This was a few days ago, I went to check my pictures. To
my surprise, The folders were respectively renamed back to their originals, and the new random pictures i took have been deleted
along with the folder.
Note: All of this is on my SD card. Phone is currently rooted, only for root access.
Knowing that some of the best and brightest are here in XDA, Does this seem like my SD card is starting to take a ****? Or am i looking
at corrupting system files?
Quick update. Just as an experiment, I set my camera save location to "internal memory" and took some pictures. I'll check back with it tomorrow.

Hi all.
Today I noticed that in last 2 days I had lost around 300 photos from the SD card. I had around 600 photos on Thursday, more than half are gone (randomly, couldn't see a pattern for leftover photos). On Friday I upgraded the phone to .6 from .3, it wiped out the phone but was not supposed to delete anything from SD card. My music and video files seem to be not affected, ebooks are also untouched. SD card itself seems to be working fine, no corrupted files, no unusual files/folders on it. I don't think it was the upgrade but have no idea what could have happened. Before the upgrade I had to install HTC sync, to get the driver. Does it do something by default? Does it sync/remove any files?
We just came back from vacation. Most of the pictures were taken on my camera, but I had good amount of shots on the phone. It's my fault for not coping everything before the update but I wanted to know if you had seen anything like that.
My only hope is to check the work computer that I used for upgrade, but I don't think sync would move files without any notice.
This may not be what happened to you but i did have a friend that did the upgrade OTA, there wasnt enough space on his SD card for the OTA file, plus i guess it also needs extra space to swap files. Therefore, in his situation files on the sd were randomly overwritten. Anyway this im getting 3rd party from him so it might not apply to you but thought id toss it out there.

Did the pics get moved to LOST.DIR? Sometimes when you plug your phone into a computer and don't eject or unmount the card, some files get corrupted and moved there. It sucks cuz it removes the extension, and changes the file name to a number, but sometimes you can just add the jpg extensions and save the pics. It's worth a try.

Yep. Same thing happened to me. I wasn't doing any kind of upgrade or anything. Still had 4+ Gigs free on my SDcard. Opened up the gallery and it only had 10 pictures in it. 90something pics just gone. I checked LOST.DIR and there is one big file in there around 140MB. Can't find a way to extract it.
Luckily, I had a backup on my laptop that was only a couple of days old so I got most of my pics back, but still annoying.
LOST.DIR has one small file.
I didn't think about not enough space on SD. I had around 300Mb when started the update, I didn't have to copy anything to the card, it was ran from the computer.
My lesson (again and again): there is not enough backup.
Thanks for replies!
OK, I don't get this at all and need a little help.
About two weeks ago I was locked out of my phone (a problem some of you may have seen posted more than a few time).
I am synched with the Exchange server here at work and they force out a password policy. After too many tries, soft resets and other the damn thing wiped ALL my data including my SD card.
Since then I have hacked the registry and disabled the lock policy (sorry MIS).
I had a LOT of pictures on that SD card (kids, family et al). Luckily I had off-loaded most of them just before the wipe took place, but I did lose quite a few save for about a week's worth.
Since reestablishing my "Album" and directing it to the SD card I am now saving pics as I had been (SD Card), but on my device there are these phantom images!
Some of them are pictures that I lost! I don't know how as they were being stored on the old SD card, but they are listed as on "my device" and every single one in their own separate folder (ie. 110C4E1, 14AE0F4B, etc.) listed when I go to the Album tab and then press "albums" again twice.
In addition, some of the photos are only thumbnail size while some are the originals in their full glory.
Added to this I see separate folders holding a multitude of pics from browsing and facebook!
I cannot find a centralized location to either recover the photos that I had lost and/or clean out the ones I don't need (it looks like browser cache).
I was able to send myself one of the photos by email and it had a ridiculously long name (40322_424045451143_521416143_4867882_1223745_n.jpg). This was one of the photos of one of my kids! I have it, but I want to find the directory where it resides and just can't even when using search features.
PLEASE NOTE: They are on my device, not my SD card as HTC was kind enough to send me a new SD card noting there have been some faulty ones about. The SD card in there is brand new.
There is no DCIM folder on my device as I store all my photos on my SD card.
Also note: after the wipe I did four hard resets...FOUR and these photos are somehow still in my device! I am thankful, but why are they there and how can I recover them?
Thanks for reading this far and hopefully some guidance will be forthcoming.
Any ideas on these photos?
I know that some of them are facebook avatars...where are those stored on the device?
I just need the path!
Hi there, I really need your help!
Whilst setting up an owncloud server and messing with the app on my phone it had somehow created a duplicate camera folder. Now instead of looking in that folder to check photos (they both said they had the same number in) I just took another picture, checked what folder went up in value and deleted the other, STUPIDLY!
So as you can guess, 90% of my photos and vids were in the folder I deleted. I've tried all ways to get the nexus 4 mounted as a drive but to no avail. I used a piece of software called Dr.Fone and it did actually see all the missing photos but upon restoring them most were screwed when you actually wanted to open them (thumbnails were fine) or the resolution/file size was not the same as the original.
Now, if I browse my phone and go to my camera folder I can see EVERY file in there, 10GB worth and all the right file sizes etc. My phone says I have 12gb free space so something is obviously up. I can't seem to copy these over or view them either. Again if I got in to the photos app I can see 95% of the thumbnails fine but they just won't open.
Does anyone have any ideas if or how I can get these photos back as there are lots of my young daughter on there including her 1st birthday party
Quite ironic really that it was the setting up of the backup solution for ours phone that led to this!!!!!!
TIA
Do not take anymore pictures or add anymore files to the disk or you will further corrupt it and overwrite the old ones.

I bought the Aquos (reluctantly) a couple of weeks ago and am not overall impressed, but am stuck with it for now...so am dealing.
But I have having major anxiety (OK, maybe just major annoyance) about the storage issue. I have a 64gb card attached and it is fairly useless. I can't move apps over since the firmware doesn't support app2sd (i think that is what i saw one Dev put on their site).
OK, so I downloaded ES File Explorer and I can move things between the device storage and the SD card easy enough, but as soon as I move images - the gallery won't show them anymore.. They are there... I can navigate to them from apps... But just not the gallery.
In my gallery you can see folders i moved onto the card via taking the card our and putting it in a reader. So I know the gallery 'sees' the card.
I have even moved and/or saved a file into one of the folders on the card that is already showing... And they don't show in the gallery.
Is anyone else having this issue? Or is this maybe just my phone.. (I have tried 2 different SD cards, a 32gb and the 64gb and get the same results)

I have used ES File Explorer for years and haven't had this issue, even on the Crystal...
Are they images that other Image Browsers can view also? If the Gallery app is set to default, clear it, and try viewing the photos with ES, Google Photos, or other apps when it prompts you to choose an app to display the pic.
If that fails, try formatting the card through the phone and moving the photos again.
I use quickpic always an it always registers when I move anything over through es.
Always is a loaded word... If it always worked then why isn't It still working?
Before you give up on this phone I think you should try my above post or something else. Instead of factory resetting the phone as a last resort I think you should do so anyways to see if that will fix the freezes you've been having.
My personal opinion is that you should see if your problems go away by trying X (whatever that might be). My philosophy is that if something is broken I try and fix it. If I can fix it I'll be cautious to not repeat the initial problem. If I can't, whether it's not worth fixing after evaluation or too expensive to do so, I can have a clear-ish conscious towards disposing of it. In the end this is my opinion and you can do whatever you want with your stuff.
Well in the past 4 years quickpic is THE ONLY gallery app I'll use. ES and Quickpic are the first 2 things I install on any new ROM and phone. As far as always goes I just said that because I have never had an issue with it or es.
I don't know what to tell you...
I too use ES as my file manager and previously used that to transfer most of my images to my SD card. After I installed Quickpic I was able to view all the images I transferred to my SD card.
Gallery image fail
format your sd card on a pc then reinsert it into your phone it should work then.

I had this same problem and with ES files. Look through you're files and if you find files " .nomedia " delete them . I still don't know how the .nomedia files got on my phone but soon as I deleted them all my photos in Gallery showed back up. No more problems with photos.
Back last February I had a problem with files named
.nomedia and they caused problems with my photos stored on my phone. After I realized it was nomedia files causing the problem I deleted all nomedia files and all was good until last week. Now the nomedia files are showing up again. I delete them only to have the nomedia files return. Delete the file and it shows back up in a different place,in a different file. It's always someplace on my SD Card and I can't get rid of it.
I'm not sure what to do?
My device is
SAMSUNG-SM-G925A
S 6 EDGE
5.1.1
kernel 3.10.61

Thank you in advance for your time and help.

I'm hoping someone can help me.
For no explainable reason on my part, all my photos have disappeared. I can not see any photos in gallery or Google photos. I can however located photos that I took with my camera in DCIM Folder, however these don't show up in either photo app. I have tried restating and clearing gallery cache etc I have even tried restoring using smart switch to an earlier backup however the problem still exists.
Any clues what's going on?
Update: for some odd reason my phone was filled with ".nomedia" files. I deleted them all, restarted my phone and ran an app called "Media Re.Scan" and they magically reappeared. However only camera photos have reappeared. Other media has not, but I'm not sure they were visible to begin with. I would really appreciate if someone has a theory for this.
Update 2: Don't delete all .nomedia files as this will cause all jpeg files to show up in your gallery including system files and apps etc that have images. Instead only delete .nomedia files found in your photos folder and folders you want to appear in gallery etc. Make sure show hidden files is selected to find these files in the first place. I used ES file Explorer Pro.

Thanks. problem solved!
seeing the same problem in s8
i just got samsung s8 recently. i am new to the samsung phone but i am seeing the exact same problem. i see pictures i took from earlier today and a few fays ago just magically disapper. I have tried multiple things like deleting the cache, data, using quick pro, cut and paste the dscim in a new folder, deleting the .nomedia but i CANNOT make those missing pictures reappear anywhere. Anyone else who ran into this and maybe have fixed the problem?
I'm having the same problem on my S8...taking new pics & downloading pics/gifs then they disappear out of nowhere the next day or so. Just started happening after the last software update (4/3/18). Not sure why or how to recover them. I've had my phone since April 2017 & it's never done this before.
Photos corrupted
Hi guys,
sorry for resuming this post.
Happened this summer and never before on my SM-G935F ITV smartphone, never rooted and stock rom (Android 8).
I loose all the latest photos, or better they are on the card but the thumbnails are grey, I tried to open them with an hex editor and I discovered they are all filled by 0x0.
I used to save them directly on a SD from Huawei 256Gb, scanned and works perfectly.
The only dubt I have is the number of photos saved into the dcim folder, they are over 2048...magic number!
Once I moved the photos in another folder I can take the photos again as usual...
It's just to know if I discovered a bug or what...
Any one with this issue?
Thanks, Pier
