Hi all.
Today I noticed that in last 2 days I had lost around 300 photos from the SD card. I had around 600 photos on Thursday, more than half are gone (randomly, couldn't see a pattern for leftover photos). On Friday I upgraded the phone to .6 from .3, it wiped out the phone but was not supposed to delete anything from SD card. My music and video files seem to be not affected, ebooks are also untouched. SD card itself seems to be working fine, no corrupted files, no unusual files/folders on it. I don't think it was the upgrade but have no idea what could have happened. Before the upgrade I had to install HTC sync, to get the driver. Does it do something by default? Does it sync/remove any files?
We just came back from vacation. Most of the pictures were taken on my camera, but I had good amount of shots on the phone. It's my fault for not coping everything before the update but I wanted to know if you had seen anything like that.
My only hope is to check the work computer that I used for upgrade, but I don't think sync would move files without any notice.
This may not be what happened to you but i did have a friend that did the upgrade OTA, there wasnt enough space on his SD card for the OTA file, plus i guess it also needs extra space to swap files. Therefore, in his situation files on the sd were randomly overwritten. Anyway this im getting 3rd party from him so it might not apply to you but thought id toss it out there.

Did the pics get moved to LOST.DIR? Sometimes when you plug your phone into a computer and don't eject or unmount the card, some files get corrupted and moved there. It sucks cuz it removes the extension, and changes the file name to a number, but sometimes you can just add the jpg extensions and save the pics. It's worth a try.

Yep. Same thing happened to me. I wasn't doing any kind of upgrade or anything. Still had 4+ Gigs free on my SDcard. Opened up the gallery and it only had 10 pictures in it. 90something pics just gone. I checked LOST.DIR and there is one big file in there around 140MB. Can't find a way to extract it.
Luckily, I had a backup on my laptop that was only a couple of days old so I got most of my pics back, but still annoying.
LOST.DIR has one small file.
I didn't think about not enough space on SD. I had around 300Mb when started the update, I didn't have to copy anything to the card, it was ran from the computer.
My lesson (again and again): there is not enough backup.
Thanks for replies!

i just got my storage card nuked and i think it was by "save attachments on storage card" .. its cleanswept except for some attachment dir and a WMDRM dir.. anyone experienced this before?
Im curious if there is a way to save my storage card like file recovery for windows!?!? I've had smartphone for 2 years and never experienced such (nor used the mail portion) .. its really a drag if this is normal wm5 behavior.
anyways two questions:
- is a way to generally clone a qtek9100 with all regs and storage
- is there a way to recover lost files if nothing else is written to car? (so called quick formats)

Backup apps:
SPB Backup - www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/products/backup/?en
Sunnysoft Backup Manager - www.sunnysoft.cz/en_clanek.php?clanekid=51
Sprite Backup - www.spritesoftware.com/pocketpc.php
Or, otherwise, copy all files over, and export the registry using Tascal Registry Editor or so. Restoring would likely be iffy, though.. e.g. overwriting the Pocket Outlook database and such - if it can be done.

Yes - there's dedicated software for this. I got one from Sandisk that came with their 1GB Ultra III compactflash card that I've got in my camera next to a 2GB memorystick.
http://www.lc-tech.com/software/rprowindetail.html
as for the nuking, I assume now it was something todo with windows mediea player and device syncronization which hadnt fully initiated ..
anyways, when you tlak of recovery what do you mean, as the link you post leads to pc software.
u put sd card in camera and mount as usb and run pc software to recover?
sprite backup seems to be very nice and feature rich.
I just had the exact same thing happen to me...was just left with the attachments directory.
The good news is that the SD card shows that there is 250MB used so i know the files are there...i just cant see them. I'm trying that SD program referenced in the last post to see if i can at least see the files.
Unfortunately, all my backups are on the SD card itself. I hadnt copied them to my HD.
wow, this is nuts - there's some serious bug lurking around!
Update on this.
I was able to recover the files with some data recovery tools. The one in this thread is useless - its meant for media files only.
I still wonder why this happened. Either way, I'm switching back Outlook attachments to main memory for a bit and see what happens.
d'oh
Well, let us know which data recovery tool you used - might come in handy for others
yup same thing happened to me... and same way, attachments on storage card
space was still missing but the files were too
didnt bother recovering though as i had backups luckily
The same happened to me twice! The first time I thought it was due to FAT FS, so i reformated it with FAT32, but it happened again.
I do have my attachements at SD, as well as I save pictures from camera to it.
BTW, the same thing happened once with my wife's iPaq 2490 (attachement at SD).
As for fixing: just use standard MS Windows checkdsk (or use Check now from drive options) if you have a card reader. It saves all files to FOUND directory (but, unfortunately, it renames it to strange names, so you'll have to find out what is what)
If this happens to you, FinalData Enterprise and EasyRecovery Pro are known to recover files very well. They will find all files and filenames. They wont restore the top level folder names but if you dont have many, you can change them yourself. More important to me were the lower level filenames and the integrity of those files.
Most of the other trial recovery programs i used couldnt do what these two products could. They typically just showed a bunch of .chk files or else tried to recover media files only.
I still want to know how this happened and if there's a way to replicate the problem. There's some nasty Outlook bug lurking around that needs to be fixed!
same thing happened to me. just realised that i have 300 meg os missing disk space that i thought had gone for ever.
can anyone recommend a freeware tool ?
Wait, my new 2gb card died 2 days ago! The Wizard won't even find it, and my PC finds it, but all the stuff on it is missing except for a couple of directories and it won't let me format it. It has to go back to China now. I'm so pissed off.
Anyone know a card recovery app?
I know the ones i mentioned earlier should work.
Someone said chkdsk may work...try that although i worry that if it recovers cross linked files (most of them are), it'll dump a bunch of useless chk files on the card.
i tried checkdisk and it didn't seem to retrieve any files. grrrrrrrrr.
Well maybe it s a bug which occurs on march 14.... because that same thing occured to my sd yesterday while I was using tt5 on the road... ;(

I'd choose SPB Backup. According to my knowledge the WM5 compatible version of Sprite Backup does not have the self extracting functionallity yet. (weird because that among other features made Sprite Backup stand tall above all other backup/clone solutions).
Hope they will include this self extracting feature soon.
2 GIG Mini SD Speed
Just got mine from Singapore yesterday. I did not format it as it came already formatted. I have noticed that playing video divx / mpg1's are very slow versus internal memory. I did the reg edits for cache size but found no real changes to media playback. Anyone out there playing with media playback on a Cingular 8125?

From experiance with this same issue on a 1gb, the card eventually starts having block failures. Fortunatly the place I bought it replaced it with another. Whatever nukes it, perminatly damaged mine. Hope in your case it didn't damage it.
I'm wondering if this is related to the reboot issue some of us are experiancing... and if it has something to do with pocket outlook or pocket windows media player 10.
Grey
Block failures are a hardware fault.
The only way you could induce one with software would be to rewrite the same location more than ~1m times, which would cause it to fail - flash has a limited lifetime, although the limit is very high.
So let me get this straight:
REGARDLESS of the BRAND of the miniSD card, the Wizard HAVE an ISSUE whereby, if MEssaging Attachement is saved to the card, the device CAN RANDOMLY nuke the card?
I haave the same issue with my ATP miniSD card (and they're considered one of the most reliable one), but instead of nuking it, it just doesn't show the file OR...worst... rename the card to "Storage CArd 2".
Depends on what people are running into.
If you're getting a corrupted card BUT you can reformat it, then it may be something with the storage card attachment thing. (I personally run with this turned on and have NOT had it happen)
If, however, the card CANNOT be reformatted - that is, its TOAST - then its NOT a software problem. The card has physically failed. Since the 2GB cards are quite new, this is entirely possible.
One other possibility - if you have a card that won't reformat first try writing a few kilobytes of zeros to it using psdwrite. If you can THEN reformat it, then the card was scrambled - it did not die.
Using "r2sd" to dump ROM images to the card has been known to interfere with reformatting to full capacity due to the internal data patterns that show up in certain places with certain ROMs. Writing a block of zeros to the front of the card will fix this, as it will wipe the data that is being misinterpreted.
I just came across this realization last night, and it is very, very disconcerting - to say the least.
I have had my EVO since day one launch - no problems with it. I am not rooted, and have the latest OTA update applied.
I actually have the two Transformers moves from the HD2 on my memory card from a friend, as well as a couple more he ripped/formatted for our phones (he now has an EVO as well). The night before last I was bored/tired and stayed up in bed watching parts of both films. One day later (last night) I was out with friends and one of them asked me to show another how good the video looks on our phones. I fired up Meridian (what I always use to watch movies on the EVO) and was shocked to find the two TF films were nowhere to be found. What's more, the listing of "VIDEO00__" files from the EVO camcorder seemed suspiciously short - like some of those were missing, too. Now, I know that at least the TF films were on there the night before.
I got home, removed the card from the phone and fired it up on my laptop. I used two file recovery programs: Recuva and Pandora Recovery (both free) to analyze the card. I found the Transformers files as if they'd been deleted. I also found a whole host of other files that have been deleted. The vast majority of them seemed to be media of some sort, from photos to Video files (taken with the phone). Since most of the media produced from the phone are "IMAG00__.jpg" or "VIDEO00__.3gp" and I DO manually delete some of them time to time, it was hard to tell what was intentionally deleted and what wasn't. HOWEVER, there were definitely media files I would NOT have deleted, like pictures from my Wallpapers folders, photos from other folders I manually renamed based on the content, etc.
I don't know how long this has been going on - I know that the file recovery program Recuva tell you what file overwrote another. Using that, I could see that a movie I would not have deleted (Iron Man) was overwritten with a photo taken with the phone that, based on the file number, was taken on or about July 4th. Flipping through my video gallery, I am certain I am missing many of those, too, as videos from a certain event (family gathering) that I know I had a handful of files for now only have one.
I've had the phone now for basically a month and a half - and while I am normally good about backing up here and there I have neglected to do so often with my EVO as I've been very busy (getting married in about a month) and I didn't think I'd need to have a backup short of physically losing the phone (have never lost a phone). This realization scares the heck out of me, and I'm wondering if anyone has experienced it or has any ideas about it. Until last night when I happened to be looking for a specific file(s) I used the night before, I didn't have any idea this was happening.
If it helps, in between the night when I watched the movies that later went missing and the night I realized they were gone I connected my EVO to the computer via USB to transfer a file and charge it. I realized recently whenever I connected the phone the computer would automatically read/access the card without me ever having to choose the option from the pull down menu. I thought that maybe that kind of activity could be the root cause of missing files (you know how flash drives don't like to be fiddled with while reading/writing). I did some searching before starting this post and found out that behavior is caused by a setting in DoubleTwist which I have since changed. Still, I have a hard time believing that's the root cause of files which just seem to be deleted without me ever doing it.
Any thoughts or ideas? Any way you members can check to see if you seem to be missing any media (or other) files?
Sounds like phone corrupted card. Sorry, you're sol. There's another couple of posts relating to this subject and a possible remedy for future occurrences with this problem. Either look for post with subject of corrupt card or files disappear. It's in the same section as this one, you might have to look through a few pages before you see them. Good luck.

For a freebee, try virtualrecorder. Cool features. Sounds excellent.

Really? I'll look for them but I would have thought a corrupt card would manifest in some other way - like not functioning when you try to record or save something, not systematically deleting files. Strange.

I've only used my voice recorder a few times. After reading this, maybe I won't anymore.
I just had to chime in that this very thing happened to me and with the same movies that i got from the files of the hd2.
All i know is that i had a gig or so left on my card and then the next day i had over 6 left.
The good thing is i had the card and all its content backed up on the wifes computer.

Update:
I used that recuva you recommended and it worked! Got all my pics back. I've been wondering what on earth caused it to be lost in the first place because I haven't installed anything lately. I am rooted and I noticed alot of titanium backup files were also gone. Sprite backup files were gone. A mystery indeed. I've learned my lesson though. Backup. More. Frequently.
Some weird stuff has been happening the past few days. Any search for it just brings up data recovery threads. Anyway...
A few days ago, i took some pictures with my phone. I sent them off via whatsapp and went on my own business.
When i went back to look at the picture i had taken, The phone "deleted" it. With my past experience of large capacity folders,
I proceded to my root explorer to rename my camera folder (to Camera2, and the old "camera2" folder to "camera3") and took a
few random pictures to allow my camera app to create a new folder. This was a few days ago, I went to check my pictures. To
my surprise, The folders were respectively renamed back to their originals, and the new random pictures i took have been deleted
along with the folder.
Note: All of this is on my SD card. Phone is currently rooted, only for root access.
Knowing that some of the best and brightest are here in XDA, Does this seem like my SD card is starting to take a ****? Or am i looking
at corrupting system files?
Quick update. Just as an experiment, I set my camera save location to "internal memory" and took some pictures. I'll check back with it tomorrow.

I bought the Aquos (reluctantly) a couple of weeks ago and am not overall impressed, but am stuck with it for now...so am dealing.
But I have having major anxiety (OK, maybe just major annoyance) about the storage issue. I have a 64gb card attached and it is fairly useless. I can't move apps over since the firmware doesn't support app2sd (i think that is what i saw one Dev put on their site).
OK, so I downloaded ES File Explorer and I can move things between the device storage and the SD card easy enough, but as soon as I move images - the gallery won't show them anymore.. They are there... I can navigate to them from apps... But just not the gallery.
In my gallery you can see folders i moved onto the card via taking the card our and putting it in a reader. So I know the gallery 'sees' the card.
I have even moved and/or saved a file into one of the folders on the card that is already showing... And they don't show in the gallery.
Is anyone else having this issue? Or is this maybe just my phone.. (I have tried 2 different SD cards, a 32gb and the 64gb and get the same results)

I have used ES File Explorer for years and haven't had this issue, even on the Crystal...
Are they images that other Image Browsers can view also? If the Gallery app is set to default, clear it, and try viewing the photos with ES, Google Photos, or other apps when it prompts you to choose an app to display the pic.
If that fails, try formatting the card through the phone and moving the photos again.
I use quickpic always an it always registers when I move anything over through es.
Always is a loaded word... If it always worked then why isn't It still working?
Before you give up on this phone I think you should try my above post or something else. Instead of factory resetting the phone as a last resort I think you should do so anyways to see if that will fix the freezes you've been having.
My personal opinion is that you should see if your problems go away by trying X (whatever that might be). My philosophy is that if something is broken I try and fix it. If I can fix it I'll be cautious to not repeat the initial problem. If I can't, whether it's not worth fixing after evaluation or too expensive to do so, I can have a clear-ish conscious towards disposing of it. In the end this is my opinion and you can do whatever you want with your stuff.
Well in the past 4 years quickpic is THE ONLY gallery app I'll use. ES and Quickpic are the first 2 things I install on any new ROM and phone. As far as always goes I just said that because I have never had an issue with it or es.
I don't know what to tell you...
I too use ES as my file manager and previously used that to transfer most of my images to my SD card. After I installed Quickpic I was able to view all the images I transferred to my SD card.

I had this same problem and with ES files. Look through you're files and if you find files " .nomedia " delete them . I still don't know how the .nomedia files got on my phone but soon as I deleted them all my photos in Gallery showed back up. No more problems with photos.
Back last February I had a problem with files named
.nomedia and they caused problems with my photos stored on my phone. After I realized it was nomedia files causing the problem I deleted all nomedia files and all was good until last week. Now the nomedia files are showing up again. I delete them only to have the nomedia files return. Delete the file and it shows back up in a different place,in a different file. It's always someplace on my SD Card and I can't get rid of it.

Hey Guys
No clue WTF is up with my Note 4 but I all of a sudden got a heads up this afternoon that I was running out of local storage space and needed to clear up some files to make room.
I store everything (app files and all photos etc) on my 64GB card and, last I checked, I had about 12GB of space left on the phone with 7.5GB of OS usage.
According to my phone I was down to 400MB and my phone was feeling a little warm while just sitting on the table.
So I connected it to my PC, removed an old camera folder and a few other things and got it up to 3.56GB but still way too low and all visible folders to me are low in size so something is going on within the system files hidden away to be chewing up 21.6GB of space.
Within 3-4 mins of freeing up the 3.56GB of space, it dropped to 2.4GB!?
So I checked the storage on the phone itself and it was showing only 1.8GB available.
Within 5 mins it was down to 889MB and there is has remained.
I cannot figure out WHAT is writing so much to my phone that is is chewing up 10+ GB?
Anyone else ever experience this?
Could it be Google Photos but if so, why would it write anything to my phone vs uploading it to the cloud?
I installed 2 apps 2 days ago, both for my Mi Band 1S and they appear to be using next to nothing storage and battery wise so I am not sure what is up but it is driving me nuts.
Appreciate any input, advice, or ideas!
Cheers :good:
Use the "SD card Analyst" feature in ES file Explorer or similar feature in other file managers to see size of each folders in SD and External SD.
Mmm but the issue isn't with my SD card but rather the local main storage.
Or are you suggesting the SD card has something to do with that?
Cheers
Was thinking about a system update, but 10GB is a lot.
Strange stuff, hope you get it solved, kinda curious what it could be.
Perhaps it would help if you posted model and firmware version.
Kind regards, Stefan.
Yeah I wondered the same thing but I do not think Rogers has the 6.0 update rolling out yet...I should get it by the time 7.0 is out :|
Well my phone, just now, plummeted down to 15mb of onboard storage left and all I did was take a couple of photos (I choose to save all photos to my 64GB SD card).
I am wondering if Google Photos is caching a ton of info in a hidden folder somewhere after the latest update?
It told me to delete photos since they are uploaded to t Google Photos but those files are on my SD card and yet it is telling me I am running out of space.
Figured it out!
Even though my photos are tossed to the SD card after taking them, Google Photos decides to store ALL your photos in a hidden folder within the system files WTF Google.
I had 18GB of photos so I cleared the Google Photos cache and all good.
Cannot wait for 6.0 and using expandable memory as internal storage.
Hello, i have got the same behavior. After checking which app is the bigger one, I found that google photo took about 14Gb!
I have deinstalled this app and reinstall it. It is fine just for 2days and I have just double check this morning that I have lost again more than 4Gb in one night....
It seems that this memory leaks happens only when connected to wifi.
Ah ha... So it must be after the last update. I re-enabled mine and sure enough it started backing up the photos off the Web to my phone even those the are already on my SD card! I left a 1 star review on the play store... They generally are pretty quick to patch
Hope the patch will come soon...
I sent them a feedback, wait now their answer.
