[Q] Help! Phone will not turn on or reset! - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I put my phone down one day and when I picked it back up the screen would not turn on. When I plug it in without touching any buttons, I get one red light flash and then nothing. I have tried the trick where you hold the volume button down and the power button and plug it in, and I do manage to get to the reset/start screen. From here though, my phone just turns itself off, or moves to the google screen but then turns itself off. I've also tried "pulling" the battery (which is apparently holding up instead of down on the volume), and this also does nothing. I have also tried different chargers and this is not working either. I have left it to charge for over 24 hours too and this does nothing.
I cannot find any answer to this whatsoever and I am at a loss at what to do about it.

I used Tab 2 charger to get over it but u may read this http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-4/general/final-fix-nexus-4-red-light-death-t2250454

mt3g stuck at box-arrow-phone icon on power up

Hi,
I have a MT3G that my brother likes a lot, so he bought a second-hand MT3G on craigslist and asked me to help him make it work, since it is apparently broken.
On power-up it goes to a screen with an icon of a software box with a yellow arrow coming out of it and pointing down to a phone. Is this the "recovery screen" icon?
I put SAPPIMG.NBH on the root of a FAT formatted 2GB Kingston microSD card (the card works fine in my MT3G) and tried each of these key combos after removing and reinserting the battery:
hold voldown while click power = still the same logo and no progress bar
hold home while click power = same thing
hold back while click power = same thing
I also turned the 2GB card into a "gold card" using instructions on XDA and put on it the sappimg.zip that is supposed to fix perfectSPL. Re-did all key combos above. Same logo.
The only thing that results in something different is when I hold the trackball while powering on, and then I get a blue power light and blank screen.
Plugging the phone into the computer with USB with the power off and battery in shows the orange charging light, but the phone is never recognized as a USB device when it is powered on and connected.
Any help would be appreciated. I thoroughly searched the XDA boards and tried as much as I could. I don't think my brother can get his money back from the guy who sold it to him, and I have already yelled at him for not testing before he walked away with the phone.
Thanks!
the only thing I can think of not sure why right now this is only thing coming to me is while in the screen press home and back for a while or, hold some and power for alot longer even after the screen pops up just keep holding for at least a minute... another thing is hold home and power while inserting the battery.... also tell us what happens when you try to power the phone normally
Thanks so much for your ideas, mt3g
I tried home and back for a couple of minutes and still just stay stuck at the box-arrow-phone icon.
I then pulled the battery and held home and power for 2 minutes, and then released the power button but held the home for another 2 minutes, and then let go of home and waited another 5 minutes, but still stuck at box-arrow-phone icon.
Then I tried holding home and power while inserting the battery and it still stayed at the box-arrow-phone icon.
When I power the phone normally it still just comes up with the box-arrow-phone icon.
Any other ideas?
Thanks again.
Either a paperweight or a BRICK!!
your brother's been scammed... If you can't get into fastboot or recovery the device is considered bricked (well, not "techincally" as HTC could still fix it but you can't ). The guy apparently tried to flash an incompatible SPL (or something went wrong during the process) and then sold the brick...
the only way to fix this is to hold volume down when phone is turned off, then turn on the phone but keep holding volume down! this should boot it into fastboot mode, if it doesnt then its bricked.
Have you tried downloading the Android SDK and running adb devices while the phone is plugged in? You could possibly run a logcat as well and see what the phone is doing.
Thanks for the suggestions, Dixi789! No combination of buttons will get me to fastboot or any other screen than the one with the box-arrow-phone icon, and when I plug the phone into the computer via USB it is never recognized as a USB device, so the Android SDK tools don't see it as being connected.

TF not waking up. Sleep of Death?

Hi for some reason I cant get my TF to turn on! It was working fine all day. I left work and placed the TF in sleep mode (hitting the button) When I got home about 15 mins later, I hit the power button and nothing. I read about the Sleep of Death but this is the first time Ive had this. I try holding onto the power button for 10 seconds and then releasing it and then held it for another few seconds and nothing. I even try holding the power button for one mins and then releasing it and hitting it again and nothing. I had bout 35% battery life before heading home.
I plug it into my notebook and i get the prompt the auto play message on windows 7. double click on the TF TF101 icon and I cant see any folders. On the asus sync program it tells me no device is found. While its plugged into the notebook I held onto the power button and I get that sound coming from windows (usb sound) then I get a sound coming out of my TF and the auto play message pop up. I cant even get it to go into recovery mode (vol down + power) I am on 3.1 leaked and no root. Any other suggestion before I call Asus. Thanks
Try charging it for a few hours, the battery might've drained due to some apps keeping wifi on for the whole time (using WakeLock)

While holding the power button it will disconnect from my notebook (no longer visible in my computer) then pressing the power button again its pop up with the auto play message and i get a sound from the speakers of the TF...one of those default sound on the TF. (new email alert sound) but the screen is still black. I also trying hooking it up to my TV to see if I could get a picture and no...
OKAY got a picture now with the hdmi input but no picture on the TF. I have the pattern lock screen. do i disable it? I am able tole move around but trying to find out how to disable the pattern lock screen.

I am at 50% and still no picture on the tf. Now when I try to enter my pattern for the lock screen its turning red not green like before....wtf reboot and still cant get in.
Just to share, a similar but less drastic thing happened when i got mine.
Tried it at the shop for about 5 minutes just to check everything worked fine. Packed it back into the box and took it home. About half a day later, at night when i officially unboxed it,it refused to turn on. no sound, no lights, nada. when i turned it off at the store, it still showed about 50+% battery remaining.
Same thing if i attached it to the dock.
So i left it stuck into the dock (just so i can confirm that it's charging) and left it to charge for about 15mins (while worrying that i might have a DOA TF).
The light was a steady amber from the get go, meaning >95% charge.
Anyway, left it to charge for about 15-20 minutes while trying every combination i could think of, short, 10 seconds, 1 min, more than 1 mins..
Long story short, after a while, it booted up with a 10second press of the power button.... left it to charge overnight (>8 hrs first charge) and it's been fine since.
Good luck with yours.
Okay reboot again. and its not take my pattern for the lock screen. touch the first circle and its red. and it tells me to try again...wtf....normally its turn green on the circle (the first one) now its red.
Looks like my screen is dead....smh.. I am able to see the lock screen via hdmi but its not taking my lock pattern. Every circle I hit turns red (error I guess) I dont know what else to do. I try doing a factory reset (volume down and power button at the same time) but I cant get a display on my tv when i am trying to access his mode. I called Asus and got a RMA... Just wondering do i need to send in the wall charger and usb cable too? Before sending it in does anyone know what else I could do??? Thanks

[Q] Nexus 10 wont turn on.

I placed my nexus 10 on charging yesterday, and after a while (2-4 hours later) when i came back, i found the device to be turned off, I tried the power button in all the combination with volume buttons, but still no luck (even held the power button for 3mins) I searched online, and couldnt find any help on other forums. Some said to keep it on charging overnight and then try powering it up. But still no luck.
I dont get any notification when i connect it to charger, although when i press the power button while connected the screen lights up, and battery charging sign shows up.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

So you cannot even get to the recovery?
You ether over charged it (very unlikely to happen) or you have a faulty N10.

No, can't even get to recovery. But i have been using the device for over two months now, nothing like this ever happened. What about the charging sign when i press the power button. It might be some kind of a sleep mode or something, no?

Could be a bootloader corruption, software issue, hardware issue or some part of the hardware "thinks" that it is still on when it is not causing it to not switch on.
Have you noticed any issues before it just came off like extreme overheating?

Well, yes the tablet was getting overheated after a long session of hd videos, or games, but that use to happen all the times.
I believe this is normally called a "Sleep of Death" or sometimes "screen off death". Hold power + vol up + vol down at the same time for 5 seconds and you should boot into fastboot. From there hit the power button to turn the tablet on. Then go about finding a better ROM/kernel combo that doesnt give you this problem.

Are you using the charger/cable that came with your device?
Its working.
Weird how it was taking any input from the power button though. I kept the tablet on charging over night and i tried turning it on in the morning and it worked.
Thank you all.

I've had my Nexus 10 for less than a week, and this morning I encountered this problem. I was working on setting up syncing through an app called FolderSync and SugarSync. Syncing of one of the folders seemed to go into a loop. The device locked up completely a couple times. I got the process running again and left it running while I went for a workout. When I came back no way could I get it turned on.
I had tried all the things suggested here before checking here for help. I'll try your "solution" of leaving the device on charge overnight. If I can't get it going tomorrow morning I'll return it to Staples, where I bought it.
I have an iPad and have never encountered anything even close to these problems. Bought the Nexus 10 specifically to run the Vim Touch app for Android. The only Vim app for the iPad is horribly crippled.
Sounds like this thread pretty much exhausted the possibilities by the time epicbearman discovered his "solution," but if by chance anyone has any further suggestions I would be grateful.
Thanks,
Eric Weir
I had the exact problem as the OP and none of my chargers worked. I then googled and found someone that said to try to charge via their PC USB instead of the wall charger. I left it plugged into the USB for a couple of hours and the charge went to 4% ( so it must have been very dead ) and all is well.
I charged it via the usb charger, and connected it to my pc overnight. Try doing that.

Thanks. If I'd gotten this in time, I suspect it would've worked. But when I couldn't get it started after trying everything else and leaving it on charge overnight, I returned it to Staples.
Will order a Nexus 7 from Google. If I can get Vim Touch running successfully---my reason for wanting an Android tablet---and I find the screen to small for heavy writing---I want to get by with a soft keyboard---I'll order another 10 and give the 7 to my daughter.
Thanks again,
Eric Weir

Stuck on "Erasing..." after factory reset attempt

Hi, my parents N7 wasn't used for a long time and it was completely dead. It couldn't even stay on when plugged in.
I went into the shutdown mode to charge it for an hour or so and managed to get it on.
The battery was at 2%. I decided to do a factory reset while the device was plugged in but now it's become stuck on the Erasing screen. Its been there for a few hours now. I've tried restarting but it just goes back to the Erasing screen. I've also tried booting into recovery but it just goes straight to the "Erasing..." screen again.
When I press power and vol up on the Erasing screen it tells me "Formatting /data...." in small yellow writing but like I say its been like it for hours.
Any advice? device is completely stock, not rooted or anything.
Thanks
Make sure you are using the OEM 2.0A charger from Asus and leave it connected to charge overnight for at least 8 to 12 hours. Unplug it and wait a few minutes before attempting to get into Recovery Mode or Bootloader (hold Volume Down & Power to restart) - if that work, reconnect the power supply as you want it to get power while cycling.
Keep a close watch on any error or messages popping up on the screen as you do this - post them here.
What is your goal in doing a Factory Reset ?
If the battery is completely dead & remained in that state for a long time, it might not come back to life & a replacement battery is probably the answer for the long run - is it out of warranty ?

Hi the correct has been used. I left it charging over night and is now at 100%. I can tell this from the battery indicator in the middle of the screen when I power off.
When I try and boot into recovery (vol - & power) the device just goes back to the "Erasing..." screen where it stays indefinitely (to my knowledge). The screen is still animated (the robot with the blue rotating graphic inside him).
If the warranty is 1 year then I believe it has expired.
Thanks

It's strange indeed. Make sure you keep holding volume down until you (in theory should) get to the bootloader menu.
I have the same problem. Whenever I turn the device on, it goes straight to Erasing... screen, no way out. If I try to do Power+Volume Down thing, it turns off the device, then it'll start again and back to Erasing... screen. Help! :crying:

Same for me

phone won't boot/start up

I have a at&t S4 that all of a sudden today stopped working. When I restart the phone by taking the battery out and putting back in, it gets stuck on the Samsung Galaxy S4 logo and then a black screen. I tried going to recovery mode(volume up + home + power button), and it shows recovery booting in blue for a sec then goes black. I tried for download mode the warning comes up but after pressing volume up it goes black. I really don't know what to do at this point.
Tried using kies or smart switch to perform a firmware recovery?
Yes, the computer doesn't recognize that the phone is connected. It's as if when the phone goes to the black screen its actually powered off. The only time I get anything from the phone is when I pull the battery and reinsert it.

When the phone battery are too low, the phone could behave like that too.
Do you know that battery is fully charged or has more than 60%?
If not charge the phone first.
Plug the charger. If you did not see any sign showing that you phone is charging, press and hold the power button for 10 sec and release it. You should see the phone charging image.
Let me know whether your phone has enough battery power left but showing the above mentioned problems.

Yes, the battery is fully charged. I have another S4 Active that I've swapped the batteries with, along with a spare official Samsung battery and charger. It doesn't matter which battery I use, the phone acts the same with any of the 3.

If you have enough battery power left but the phone was behaved like that, you might need to flash the firmware.
Are you in lollipop or kitkat? For the time being, the only firmware available for kit-kat and lollipop is NB1 firmware cooked by muniz_ri . You can get it from here.
You mentioned that you can go to download mode but the phone shut off when you press volume up to go to the download mode after the warning.
Try the 10 sec method. Go to the download mode (power+home+volume-down) but keep holding the power button for 10 sec even though you see the warning message appear. Then you press volume up to go the download mode. Try this way and let me know.

That is strange. The same thing happened to me. But I avoided the phone shut down by 10 sec methods.
Just hold the power+home+volume down for 10 sec, even though the warning sign show up, and then let it go all of them. Plug the phone to the computer and then press the volume-down to go into download mode. It works for me. Not on the first try though.
Try doing that with batter charger plug in too.

Thanks for your help. I figured out whats wrong, its got a faulty power button. I took the phone apart, put it back together, and was able to get it to boot completely. The slightest touch of the power button causes it to reboot though, so I'm going to need to replace it.

Yes, power bottom could give you a problem too. I use screen off app so I do not have to use power button to turn off the screen.
