Learn something today when talking with Motorola support. if, and I can't stress this enough, ONLY IF you have a Moto X 2014 Pure Edition. You can Unlock your Bootloader WITHOUT voiding your warranty.
Update: XT1092 Europe Edition is also considered the Pure Edition and will NOT void your warranty as well

well thats good to hear.
I had to unlock the bootloader to deal with my issues (random freezing regardless of Android version or build).... which is leading to an RMA replacement.
Yup. I was told this on two separate occasions by different Motorola reps, and I've exchanged an unlocked phone without any issues.
Wow im glad to know since im coming from the 1st gen to the 2nd and was wondering about that since i got the pure edition this time.
I'm pretty sure this also applies to all European 1092 versions as well.

I never got this answer from their support but Motorola does sell the xt1092 as the pure edition in Europe. And though we warranty can' t be denied by law anyway it would be good to have their word too because being right and getting your right are two different things...
Chat support is telling me that unlocking the bootloader on my 2014 pure edition will void the warranty unlike the developer edition phones.
Oh well, guess its really a gamble on who you speak to and who processes your warranty claim at the time.
I have a few weeks to decide if I want to buy the moto care, maybe I will wait until the time is almost over before I unlock the phone.
*Edit: Chat support just changed their answer at the end of the chat, they came back and apologized for the incorrect info and said that yes the pure edition is the same as the developer edition and unlocking the bootloader will not void the warranty.
Woohoo!

and got reply like this:'Sehr geehrter Kunde , vielen Dank für Ihre Anfrage. In Ihrem Fall gilt das nicht, das Moto x 2nd gen ist davon ausgenommen . '
this means i did not lost my garantie when i unlock the bootloader. moto x 2nd will not lost garanite for unlocking bootloader
Offtopic: I can't get over how adorable it is that German uses the word "Handy" for cellphone
Motorola Italy answered me via email and confirm warranty on european unlocked devices
For those of you that have unlocked the bootloader of your PE. Can you confirm on the motorola.com support site that your device is still listed (under "View My Stuff") with a warranty expiration date?
I had a non-DE 1st gen that I unlocked using motorola.com and it showed as "out of warranty"...

Ah, that is comforting to hear. I'm getting conflicting information from the US phone support VS the chat support. However the individual I spoke with on the phone didn't seem to understand the question I was asking, and hung up on me when I asked for a supervisor.

Has anyone gotten this answer from phone support? I've called twice now and gotten the same answer that it will void my warranty. Note this is for the US phone, I'm not sure about the European one.

I can confirm that the 2014 Moto X Pure Edition and 2013 Moto X Developer Edition are treated the same. Unlocking the boot loader will not void the warranty nor the Accidental Damage Plan. I have this confirmed by phone through the Motorola White Glove Department along with an email from that same person specifically confirming it. I went through the trouble of a 3 hour phone call to confirm this before agreeing to a replacement for my 2013 X DE.
I'd just keep trying until i found a rep that would honor it. Bound to be one that knows what the pure edition entails out there. As far as i can see on Motorola Forums, the pure edition they are treating as a developer edition which means warranty is to be honored even when you unlock the bootloader. If you scroll down you'll see Matt's comment.

That's SICK! I just bought Lumia 630 yesterday.
Maybe I should have bought Moto X.
Can't you refuse the package or return it and take advantage of this deal?
You still have time to get a Motorola Admiral from eBay. The moto trade up program is still going until the end of June, so you can buy and then send the admiral to Motorola.
Just make sure that you sign up at https://www.mototradeup.com/ before buying the x.

You can buy a No Contract phone branded for ATT, Sprint, Verizon and Replubic Wireless. You select as you add it to your cart. The phone will support all frequencies for the carrier you pick. Or you could look at the Developer Editions.
The other option is the "GSM Unlocked (ships with T-Mobile SIM)" which is the same "insides" as the GSM Developer Edition. It supports the following bands...
GSM: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
UMTS/HSPA: 850/900/ AWS/1900/2100 MHz with HSPA+ up to 42 Mbps (B5/B8/B4/B2/B1)
LTE: 700/AWS/1900MHz (B17/B4/B2)
If you have T-Mobile, the HSPA on AWS is important to get H/H+ in areas T-Mobile hasn't yet refarmed their 1900Mhz spectrum. No other X supports H/H+ on AWS that T-mobile uses.
The GSM Unlocked and Dev Edition will work with ATT's GSM/EDGE/GPRS/HSPA and LTE networks as it supports the necessary bands. There are two extra LTE bands the ATT branded X supports, however they were originally only used outside the USA. Reports are that ATT might start using one of them in the USA, but as of yet you wont notice it with the GSM Unlocked or GSM Dev Edition phones on ATT.
The Developer Edition for Verizon supports the all of the exact same bands as the Retail and Moto Maker X for Verizon.
If you are going "non-contract" check the prices. If the Moto Maker and the Developer Edition are the same price, consider the Dev Edition if you want root, as unlocking the bootloader on the Moto Maker and Retail versions voids the warranty, where was unlocking the bootloader on the Dev Edition doesn't. Only difference would be the appearance. You can't customize the look of the Dev Edition, it comes as black face, woven white back, silver accents (buttons and ring around camera). NOTE: Moto doesn't give out the bootloader unlock codes for the Retail/Moto maker versions of the X for Verizon and ATT. They do give it out for the Dev Edition for Verizon (again without voiding warranty. There has been a 3rd party Chinese website/middleman who has been up and down as of late. If you want to root and disable write protection on 4.4.2 or 4.4.3 you need an unlocked bootloader.
If you don't like the look of the Dev Edition, consider a case which covers the back, or something like a DBRAND skin. (I have no affiliation with dbrand, just saw it suggested by others on the forum here, so its worth a shot). And I've seen replacement backs on ebay and around the web, however it could void the warranty.

Or, if you're comfortable taking the phone apart, you can buy pretty much any back cover color you'd like off of eBay. That's probably the route that I'll go, since I plan on adding Qi wireless charging anyway.
Also, anyone know why a VZW Motomaker Moto X shows up with a $100 discount in the cart but the VZW Dev Edition does not? I believe the Dev Edition is coming in at the proper $100 off price ($349); however, the inconsistency in displaying the discount is probably not in Moro's best interest.

How did you use the trade up program? When I looked at it only shows in stores and a verizon gift card,
damn that site to hell. every thing you do the damn price change. if i try to buy the gsm unlocked (like i will be covered by warranty on the dev edition anyway ha) it shows a different price for every operator.
unlocked with tmobile says "starting at $449.99" the only one not that price is $399.99 for the republic one.
but i can't click any option. think it will be the dev edition anyway... unless i can't combine the student discount (which, surprise, the site says is invalid for the dev... but may it just haven't synced... ) if i can't combine the .edu discount i will wait to see what they are offloading the phones for.

The Republic Wireless version is always $50 cheaper than the others.
If you want the Developer Edition, start here -> http://www.motorola.com/us/Moto-X/ways-to-buy.html#MotoX-pdp8-story-ways-to-buy-dev
If you started here -> http://www.motorola.com/us/home and you're getting the GSM Unlocked, it is NOT the dev edition, and unlocking its bootloader will void the warranty, where as Unlocking the bootloader on the Dev Edition will not.
Keep in mind, that the final price, after discount should be $349.99 (Republic might be less). I've seen where Moto's site breaks out the $100 discount on some models, and others it just shows the lower price.
I do not know if the $100 off can be combined with any other offers or .EDU discount.

sell the "ebay" one on swappa or ebay, and buy a NEW Dev Edition especially since you can unlock is bootloader and root.. plus the new one would have warranty.. where as the "ebay" one wont (warranty book says its non-transferable).
Just as we suspected Verizon locked us down from unlocking it. Hopefully there will be decent support for this phone and we can get it unlocked in the future. Honestly just root would be fine for me since it's 99% AOSP as it is. Here's the screenshot of me trying to unlock it after the phone just released today at Verizon:

Because people with unlimited-no-tethering-allowed data plans unlock, then root, then suck down a bazillion bytes of tethered data.
I'm one of them, so no judgment happening here.

Question: did you buy out from Verizon? I bought mine from Moto maker just curious if that one would be unlocked. It did say unlocked phone when I purchased it. But time will tell once I get it from Moto
If I wasn't already grandfathered into unlimited data on Verizon I would probably switch to T-Mobil. Verizon is way too restrictive with everything they do.
They mean SIM unlocked, as you can use the phone on other GSM providers.

I think you loose your unlimited data if you do the upgrade anyway. Last time my family member used his upgrade to buy an M7 they put him on 2 Gig data plan because "They don't sell unlimited data anymore". Personally I've bought every phone since my first gen Droid X off of Craigslist instead of going through Verizon again cuz of their BS. I've cut my mini sim down to a micro sim, and when my Moto X comes I'm going to have to cut it down again to a nano sim. Bastards :[email protected] If that doesn't work and I have to go through Verizon again for a new sim (or for anything) I'm just going to switch to T-Mobil.

Yeah, that's what I thought. It's temproot feature can overcome that on some other 4.4.4 builds it seems but not the latest X builds. I tried it on my og retail X when jcase and beaups updated it recently, no go of course. I think Sunshine will be our best bet. I think the challenge is what motivates those guys the most but with sunshine, they're able to get some kind of monetary compensation, even if it's not much and I'm sure goes right back into projects for users... Which I'm more than happy to pay for a service that gives complete control of my device to me. Although another dev edition would have been nice. An unlocked bootloader AND a warranty was a combination you don't see on VZW.

Not sure if this was common knowledge or not.
If you choose to not purchase the Moto Care at the time of purchase of your new Moto X (2nd Gen.), You can purchase at a later date and separate from the actual phone order.
I was not sure if this was possible or not, so I chatted with Moto Rep, and he told me it was not available for the Moto X (2nd Gen.) after the phone was purchased.
I logged into Moto Support (https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/mcp/my_devices/) and went to my Stuff, and the option to purchase ADP was right there; and yes I am on Verizon & I did order through Moto Maker (32gb, Black/blue/silver/engraved).

On the previous Moto X, you were not able to purchase ADP for Verizon Moto Maker phones..
The Rep thanked me for this information and he'd pass it along to his supervisors to alert other reps that you can intact purchase it.
Does anyone else see this, or was this already known?
I thinks it's only available for the first 30 days after purchase. I to saw it was available for Verizon
I actually tried to do this by talking to 2 different reps. They both said it wasn't available for Verizon phones. Went through and ordered tonight. Thanks!
I'm on Verizon and ordered through Moto Maker but I'm not getting this option in "My Stuff." The accident protection page says "We're sorry. Extended service plans are not available for Verizon Wireless." Check the links below for screenshots (Sorry I'm a newb in this forum <10 posts).

I guess I'll try calling Moto tomorrow 'cause I'm not paying $8/mo. for Total Equipment Coverage from Verizon. NOPE!
Really considering buying this but I've never broken a phone before. On AT&T, what would it cost to get it replaced if it did break? Full price or subsidized?
I'm on Verizon and ordered through moto maker and the option for Moto care (ADP) was there for me. I purchased it.
I ordered my phone the exact night it launched though. I wonder if they've changed that option since then?
I tried this.... I got this.
We're sorry.
Extended service plans are not available for Verizon Wireless.
So it doesn't look like they are selling it anymore.

VZW probably wants u to buy insurance from them.
I was bummed to see the "Extended service plans are not available for Verizon Wireless" message too. But maybe it's because I got my PIN through Verizon to use on Moto Maker and didn't order from Motorola directly?
Are the ones who aren't getting the option for Moto care ADP paying full price? Or are you buying it subsidized?

It either means that Motorola has to honor it or refund my $85.
So I've had the phone for three weeks now and got a "CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR MOTO X!" email from them earlier this afternoon. Halfway down was a link to learn more about Moto Care Accident Protection and gave it a shot. I logged into my account and, to my surprise, it let me buy it for $85. It didn't give me this option two weeks ago when I posted about it in this thread. Recap: I'm on Verizon, designed on Moto Maker, and bought it at 2-year contract price. I'm putting a copy of the receipt in my safe 'cause if and when this baby sh!ts the bed, Moto best be caring for her!
I was able to buy the plan once I registered my vzw the other day.
Here's what I learned when I was trying to buy it for my Verizon phone (It IS possible, as long as it is within 30 days from your purchase date). There are 2 ways to purchase it, 1 of them doesn't work, and 1 of them does.
Method 1 (Doesn't work for Verizon):
Go through the options where you choose your phone, carrier, and how long since purchase from the drop down menus (as seen Here)
Method 2 (DOES work):
Register your phone on Motorola.com which will add your phone to My Stuff. On the main Motorola page click "Get Help". Then click Log In, and log in using your account. Next, click the My Stuff button at the top right. It will list your phone and the details and if it is within 30 days of your purchase date, then it will give you an option to "Purchase ADP". (As seen in OP).
Yeah I used method 2
Yesterday they emailed me my Certificate of Coverage so looks like I'm golden! :good:
Once you actually have your Verizon Moto X (2014) in hand, you can sign in to the motorola website and, if it isn't already there, you can add the device to your stuff. Then the option to add the coverage appears. I just purchased it for both myself and my wife (you have to do them individually by signing in as each user) and dropped our overpriced horrible insurance through Verizon at $8/month each.
The note edge just dropped one verizon i know and i have already went in and played with a live demo. Phone isnt bad but isnt spectacular over my note 4. My question is now with the developer edition edge can the developers take advantage of root/recovery to really make the panel come to life??
here is link showing it is coming soon. also depends on price for me if it is cheaper then $799 i may pick one up

Might have to cancel my order at work for the regular note edge.
Or just buy it and sell if development takes off....
Argh decisions.
I think I'll buy one then just return it if Dev edition shows up quick enough.

will do! i check daily!
So are we basically waiting on the developer version to find out how to root it?

No. The Dev Edition is meant for Developers and as such comes unlocked.
But having it wont provide clues as to how to gain root/bootloader access on a retail version.
Basically, if you want root/bootloader access, then you can either wait for the community to figure out how to crack it, else you can buy this version which is already unlocked.
Will dev ed be available to vzw users?

Yes.
Damn! Now I have to wait!
It's getting closer guys!! They have a price listed now. Still "coming soon" but it looks like it's a matter of days.
Hopefully some amazing developers will jump on board.

next question will it be available at VZW or through VZW?
Samsung's website only
me too!
I have also been checking the link, 3 times daily. I bought the retail version of the note edge and fell absolutely in love with the phone, but at the same time i could never own a phone that i cannot root. almost took the galaxy S4 back before i stumbled upon safestrap and hyperdrive. unfortunately i learned the hard way what taking OTA updates can do to your device, so i can no longer go back to the S4 when you could use CWM. I don't understand what Verizon's deal is, all the other note edges (except Verizon and AT&T) have already got root using CF auto root in Odin, but Verizon must think we are going to steal a trade secret or something and locks the bootloaders.... silly Verizon. i swear if another carrier would pop up in my area offering the same 4g speeds and an unlimited data package i'd switch in a heartbeat.
oops, sorry i rambled... subscribed to this thread, and checking the site thrice daily (more often on the days i don't work ^_^)
It's never coming out ?

the site updated again, the price was dropped. now instead of saying 799 it just says the price will vary depending on retailer... does this mean it will be available outside of the Samsung website?

I've seen those they aren't the developer edition though. Those are non carrier specific models you can use with any carrier by swapping the Sim card. The developer edition is just the normal Verizon phone but with unlocked bootloaders so you could flash cwm or twrp without bricking the device

Yes i know. Verizon was listed at $799. Now the price is gone. Hopefully it doesn't get marked up and sold for a $1000 +.
How can I find out what LTE band Verizon runs on? Basically just want to see if this phone will work for Verizon users..

I ordered a Droid Turbo 2 from Motorola yesterday. Before that I searched on taobao.com( I think you guys should have heard of it) and found BL-unlocked Turbo 2 being sold.

I asked the seller about the bootloader thing and she told me that these phones were not unlocked by her. These phones came in with BL unlocked and she doesn't know how to unlock the bootloader.
So I assume that there's a way to unlock it and we just haven't find it, right?
We are ready to pay .. Of some one found the codes or method.. Last time we did the same in case of droid maxx by paying 45$ ..
If a method truly has been found that would be great, however there could be a not so great explanation as well:
1. Unlocked by a Motorola Employee using official software/hardware.
2. Fake Droid Turbo 2's. Someone mentioned that the price for these was pretty low, so its possible these are just knockoffs that are unlockable. I mean... You know.... China....
Still I hope its legit and the person is willing to sell the method, or perhaps reverse engineering the exploit would be possible even if unlikely.
I bet on #1 being the case.

Do they have Verizon Wireless in China? It is an exclusive VZW phone. If they do not have Verizon there then maybe its where it is built? If no to both it might be a fake. China is starting to get scarily good at knockoffs lately.
Droid turbo 2 is factory unlocked .. So it can use anywhere .. I'm using here in India with local CDMA / GSM networks .. So ..

We're talking about bootloader unlock, not SIM unlock...
So here's the deal. I'm willing to put up the cash to buy one cause the selling price is sort cheap. I'll pay via PayPal and so if it's scammy wammy timey wimey, I'll have buyer protection. My Chinese coworker can help me navigate the site tomorrow. Then after a billion years whatever it is will arrive here in NYC from China. Now, if, and that's a big If, if it's really a BLUL DT2, that will mean I have a second phone with an unlocked bootlader. I am the guy who googles for how to do basic stuff. Among my family I'm the tech guy, but were a family of artists. The last time I did any programming was basic on a PC in 1992, so, I have no means of transforming this hypothetical bootlader unlocked phone into an unlock/root method for the community. But I am willing to send the phone to someone less hopeless in this area then myself. Present thyself hero....

OK Google was giving me bad price translation. This is about $700.00 USD so legit price range, but realizing this its too much for me to risk the cash. I was thinking this was about $38 dollars US. Google converted for Japanese vs Chinese yen from USD and I didn't catch that first pass.

There is one option for $478, 32gb-unlocked but doesn't say if it's New, the other options are in like new condition.
Seems fishy.
Price is to low. And the pic they show is of a device made with moto maker. Im guessing knock off. The screen on that phone looks lower res. Could be the pic but it dont look right to me.
my guess is that these were internal development/test models. There are usually a few that leak out here and there from Motorola with every new phone release.
We can hope some one I'll unlock the bl
