[Q] AT&T S5 ROMS that don't use Touchwiz? - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I just switched from T-Mobile to AT&T and I'm thinking about getting a Galaxy S5. I plan on rooting it, and installing safestrap, but I can't *stand* TouchWiz - are there any ROM's that don't have TouchWiz as the base and are based on something else? It seems a bit confusing - I know that there are no AOSP/CM based ROM's for the S5 (AT&T Version), and yes, I know I can install Nova Launcher or something, but all the ROM's I see seem to just look like TouchWiz but maybe de-bloated. Thanks in advance....

No, locked bootloader prevents it, touchwiz base only.

You can use sacs v4 ROM with s5 settings. It includes s5 icons and the s5 launcher plus s5 MMS.

None of Sac's roms V3 or V4 work on Sprint SPH-L720, tested by me. I was able to installed Version 3 and boot to it but Wi-Fi radio On/Off function does not work, Screen Mirroing does not work NFC does not work...useless. after all credit to Sac23 for his dedication and hard work to the community. hope next version is better and fixes all the bugs.

Could also be user error really. Did you make sure you are at the latest firmware? Follow step by step on how to install? Also recovery plays a big role now so yeah.

Yes, I have TWRP 2.7.1 installed, My phone is rooted using Towelroot. I have installed many rooms just to try, (this is my spare test phone) I was happy with results look and feel of only two (PhoeniX.ROM.V9.XXUGNF1.I9505.FIXED.by.tamirda) and (i9505 - S5 RivalStorm V2.1) but both only allow Radio/Modem for CDMA and are both international.
RivalStorm V2.1 seems to be the best room out of 5 or 6 I have tried, this room has every feature working and has the look and feel of the S5, that being said I will try your recommendation anyways and will post back my results, I did tried it before but I could not get it installed using TWRP, maybe I should use CWM instead.
But honestly I would be very happy to see RivalStorm V2.1 rom being domestic (US Carier...Any)

Sacs V4 works flawless on my L720. Do you have the 720T? Are you on the NAE build? if not, it is highly recommended you flash that version then follow the OP to the T.

You want to use theme manager themes on touchwiz? Not possible for many reasons. Its not recommend to install cdma carrier roms on our gsm devices AFAIK.

What rom do you sugest for this S4 noob

So I just ordered my new to me S4 off ebay, and I will be loading it with a rom once I get it.
I had been running a S2 with Recaluked. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2285290
I am looking for suggestions on a similar rom with great battery life, TW based, custom toggles, and lots of general customization options.
Does anyone have a suggestion on which roms to start with?
Thanks.
Which variant of the S4 are you using?

You won't really find anything similar to the recaulked rom on the s2, as the s4 is way more of a power horse. What you will find is 2 excellent roms Negalite and Sacs for Touchwiz. I personally use both and alternately I will flash Hyperdrive HD in the Verizon forum, of course adding Sprints APN to get LTE.

Interesting.
How many S4 variants are cross compatible on the roms?

I've only tried Hyperdrive and echo rom from Verizon but I've heard a few at&t roms work also.
Also coming from the s2 to the s4 you no longer require a recovery/kernel together as they are different now. You can still flash a custom kernel and custom recovery but they are no longer built together like on the s2.

That is very interesting for a noob such as myself. How do you add the APN? Are you doing a manual edit in settings or is there a means of flashing it?

I manually enter them. There is apps on the Play store to help but I've never b used them. I just go to Settings>More Networks> Mobile Network> Access Point Names and you can add a new APN there
Perfect! Thanks Elwood.

Cyanogen Mod possible?

After trying many different ways and failing I finally did some research and have found that the Verizon Note 3 has a locked bootloader and should not be able to flash any AOSP based ROM. Is there any way to work around this with root/and or recovery? I find myself unable to even flash CWM to the device and when it did seem to work it told me there was an application not supported by the system and to take it to Verizon. So had to reflash stock 4.4.2 and re-root. I have gotten to try CM 12 on my fiancé's OnePlus One and fell in love. Is there any known work around short of buying a new phone?

None. ASOP requires a different kernel which we can't do with locked bootloader. Sorry!
Well crap. I don't suppose there's any way to unlock the bootloader either is there?

Verizon SM-G900V Questions

It's rooted
Just from reading some things... am I able to put a non Verizon Custom ROM on this? If so, any suggestions on a ROM?
Are all Samsung Galaxy S5's Unlocked? If not, who is a reliable source to unlock this?
I plan to put this phone with T-Mobile... maybe an overseas company like Global also
I currently have Custom Verizon ROM OptimalROM
I do not know when this phone was issued or made.
Im pretty sure you can only install touchwiz based roms, tw based ones for other models may work, it depends on some thing though that vary based on which rom it is.
