You know how delusional so many people on this forum are? How many times I've said the video on HTC One is jerky and makes me vomit and the OIS is almost non-existent? Well these videos are even more definitive proof, courtesy of GSMArena. First video has it up against the Lumia 920. The 920 is 10x smoother, although that was never a debate from the beginning. The last video shows the terrible night time performance of the HTC One. It blurs and drops frames constantly when in motion. It has always done this, but having it put side by side with something superior really rubs it in. The kicker is how much smoother the iPhone 5 is compared to the HTC One. The Galaxy S 4 has a similar software based stabilization with similar results. None of them drop frames or blur at night. The HTC One just loves bouncing around and jerking about.
If you are going to tout your camera so hard, expect the same amount of criticism, HTC.

Thanks for showing how amazing the low light performance of the One is. Remarkable. I'm not looking to shoot perfect video and what you showed me seems great for me.

Indeed, very good low light performance.
If you read anandtechs review they state why. The Lumia focuses on constant frames so it doesn't capture as much light. The one can get more light but it's frames drop slightly lower to 20ish. The OIS isn't as good as the limits but it's better than any other phone with EIS.

Still, One is the first smartphone Anandtech has ever given a gold medal. All other smarthphones were never given even one medal. Its camera was almost given a lot of praises. I wonder why.
Btw, those videos are from Anandtech, not GSMArena. Just sayin.

dang son going hard.
what you want?
I'm a videographer, and believe me a professional video camera cost USD4000 with OIS on might not do better than what the One did. We can only seriously applaud the Lumia for doing a superb job here. And believe me, a Canon 5D would do worse then the One in walking videos, much worse!
In the end, it boils down to what you want your video for. If I want my videos to look perfectly good, stable and constant frame rate, I wouldn't use a phone camera. Casual gatherings, family videos? Yes I will use the One as it is always with me and special moments usually come by when there is no camera equipments around. When I do use a phone camera for videos like these, I'd much prefer dropped framerate but able to capture details...It will be useless to me if I get smooth videos with no details in it.

Not bad at all I would say. 920 is super good indeed but I don't see how One is bad as a phone cam. and as the others said the source is Anandtech which gives about the best rating to One, so what's your point? I don't even know what you are angry about, if I don't like a brand or their ad then don't buy it. I would not bother angry to Nokia or Samsung if I don't like their product.
i dont see how this is bad. OIS is clearly there, though may not be as good as the 920 as expected. OIS in the 920 was made by Carl Zeiss if i'm not mistaken and it's really something out of this world. That said, the One is not far behind, having good OIS and dominating the low light recording section is a big win for me.
If I wanted a great camera I would buy one

Thanks op, you just help me win an argument over lumia camera stills being software gimmick crap. The video performance showed how truly crap the lumia camera is. Sure its 30fps but look at the light capturing on it?
P:s, a real camera will show bright viewfinder before snapping, while the lumia shows pitch black viewfinder, then lighten up the surrounding with software alteration.
The one x could do the same with its nightmode - hdr bug. Its all software

So far, this is the best low light camera comparison I have seen.
Thanks a lot :good:
Great low light performance, as for the image stabilisation HTC One is a smartphone with a decent camera not a phone attached to a superb camera.
Welcome to my camera comparison!
2/15/2015 - Updated to include the iPhone 4s, for people who were offended by comparing the flagship killer to a flagship which is newer and twice as expensive (this, despite all flagships being more expensive than the OPO, and the Nexus 6 for example—which uses the same sensor as the OPO—being both newer and more expensive).
Landscape
Great Lighting
Indoors Person
Indoors Fine Detail
All pictures were taken at highest quality with autofocus. For each scenario I provided a gallery of 8 shots:
- OPO AUTO = OnePlus One, stock camera, Auto mode
- OPO HDR = OnePlus One, stock camera, HDR mode
- OPO GOOGLE AUTO = OnePlus One, Google Camera, HDR disabled
- OPO GOOGLE HDR = OnePlus One, Google Camera, HDR enabled
- 6PLUS AUTO = iPhone 6 Plus, stock camera, HDR disabled
- 6PLUS HDR = iPhone 6 Plus, stock camera, HDR enabled
- NEXUS5 AUTO = Nexus 5, stock camera, HDR disabled
- NEXUS5 HDR = Nexus 5, stock camera, HDR enabled
My thoughts:
If I had to choose one, it would be the iPhone 6 Plus without a second thought. It opens in one second, has OIS and catpures an HDR shot in a split second, captures more low light detail in either mode regardless of overall lighting, and in general it captures fine detail better than the OPO (check the keyboard in the Indoor Fine Detail gallery) or, at worst, the same albiet with better color reproduction. Between the OPO with either camera app, and the Nexus 5, I find the Nexus 5 to be preferable because it has OIS which means I'm able to get more fine detail than the OPO despite the OPO's higher resolution, and further the Nexus 5 is able to pull more detail out of the highlights and shadows of shots that have extremes of both (like a foreground subject backlit by a bright sky). Overall the OPO camera is incredibly disappointing; It takes forever to take HDR shots or Clear Image shots, and I can't get consistently good shots in any mode with any camera app. What's more, the only time OPO doesn't seem like it has an 8MP shooter is in Clear Image mode, which is unfortunately plagued by being as inconsistent as any other shot by the OPO in any other mode with any other camera app. In dim-ish to low light, you'd be better off drawing a picture by hand than trying to capture anything useful with the OPO.
I've taken some really fantastic shots with the stock camera on my OPO, I honestly believe it's just a matter of knowing how to use it and playing to its strengths.

These camera shootouts and other comparisons have always been useless IMO. The OPO has consistently taken great photos for me; knowing the angles the camera needs to capture more light and using some common sense about where to take photos goes a long way. If being able to snap a photo anywhere is a must for you buy a DSLR

I'm not here to talk **** about the OPO camera, even if I do think it's terrible. I did the comparison for myself (and decided to publish it after the fact) precisely because I think it's terrible. So to me it's curious how people are happy to defend it. For example, your statement is the opposite of what a marketing team would want to say, and I'm sure it's the opposite of what smartphone camera software engineers aim for. These are intended to be point and shoot, not for people who "just know how." Per OPO's own ad, it's supposed to take "astounding shots, any time, day or night, without suffering the problems of other cameras." Without a doubt the nighttime performance of this camera is horrendous, but even it's automatic performance falls short. The fact that you have to wrestle it into submission even during reasonable conditions is a testament to how far they missed the mark with this.

You were claiming you're making an objective comparison yet you were biased from the beginning. Nice try though. You probably half assed your way to get the results you expected.
Using marketing ads to form an opinion is dumb, they'll all exaggerate. Use the camera figure out it's strengths and enjoy it. I don't have the luxury of a secondary phone. Came from a G2 though and it took similarly good photos. Still had to figure out angles and right conditions to take shots, as well as a steady hand helps. Only camera that I've had that was downright abysmal was the Nexus 4.
Next time you wanna compare phones do it for yourself to make a choice on which phone to keep or whatever reason you did it. There are tons of sites like gsmarena that do these comparisons. Once you start comparing anything between phones instead of liking something for what it can offer, it never ends

I'm not trying to defend it, it has flaws, like any smartphone camera does. For example, Samsung shots are over-saturated and look awful. Nexus 5 HDR shots are too aggressive and look ridiculous (but then again, 99% of smartphone users have no idea what HDR is, how it works, how to use it, or even when you should be using it, they just use it because they think the result "looks cool"). Like the other fella said, forget whatever the marketing guys say because they're paid uber dollars to make you want something. They exaggerate, they lie.

Thanks for your comparison. To really compare the picures, I think you guys should download them and watch them on your PC.
I will do so later, so I won't comment on them now.
Speedwise I can say, the opo camera from latest OTA opens in one second too.
I made a small collection of pictures where I think they are caught really good. These are by far not the best motives, just some examples to show what
can be achieved with a smartphone camera. All taken with the standard camera app, some are auto, some hdr, I think it is visible which are which...
Would you call them incredibly disappointing?
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/72qofxzgo2d9tjg/AAARPpNIsAQFkFPFAK3k87joa?dl=0
and no, these were not the best shots taken out of 20 made, but basically the only ones I took in these situations, especially at the Harry Potter expo which was really crowded!
Download them, as they are badly compressed when opened through dropbox online.
I can't believe people are so down on this comparison just because of its conclusions. Especially because I agree 100%. Nexus 5 camera was better than the OPO's, which is a huge disappointment to me.
All this nonsense about finding the right angle, etc, is just that - nonsense. Yes, it is good to know the limitations of the hardware and do your best to overcome them, but that doesn't mean the limitations are OK and you shouldn't acknowledge them/"stop complaining".
Both on XDA and the OPO forums there is always a huge amount of backlash against any criticism of this phone and the company, and I think that's really terrible. The OPO is a good phone but it isn't perfect and it and the company are certainly not above reproach.
The OPO camera subsystem in particular was poorly designed. 13mp with 6 lenses sounds great, but without OIS it falls down against camera's whose spec sheets don't read as nice.
The iPhone 6+ should be expected to take better pictures, being a generation newer and 2.5x the cost. This isn't exactly a level playing field.

The comparison is objective. My opinion doesn't bear on the actual content of any given picture, and the fact that reviewers tend to agree with my assessment is just coincidence. I went in open minded because, unlike you, I do have the luxury of having other devices. Here's the thing: almost any camera can take a good shot "sometimes" or "if you use it right", but the reason marketers don't say "this is an incredible smartphone camera sometimes, if you use it right" is because that's basically the same as saying, "as a flagship killer smartphone camera, this misses the mark."

What if the iPhone 4s on iOS 6—cheaper and older by far—performs better, or at least favorably? What would you say then? And what about the Nexus 5—older and the same price (cheaper used)?
Anyways, I should have clarified in the OP that I did this comparison for myself because I own the phones and it seemed the OPO camera was terrible compared to my memory of the Nexus 5, so I wanted to test my memory against reality. I only published it after the fact in case others might find value in it.

Appreciated, but of course we don't know how other cameras would have performed...
I originally came from a Nexus 5, and I agree that for general day to day use I would rather have the Nexus 5 camera. OIS makes a huge difference, and the google camera software works well, however it is quite limited when it comes to features (like setting exposure times and what not, this is where the OPO camera is better). Really not surprised that the iPhone 6+ delivers the best results all around, as this was the consensus among internet reviews.
I honestly think that the OPO's camera performance is moreso a result of poor software optimization more than anything (other than the lack of OIS). I have used CM for previous phones (samsungs, HTC) and I always found picture quality to be worse on CM than on stock software. And for those bashing the comparison, if you are gonna call yourself a "flagship killer", be prepared to be compared to said flagships.
A bunch of crap.
Had a N5 before and the picture quality can't compare. Learn to take pics and don't blame the lack of OIS.
The OPO camera is one of the best ones on Android's out there. Everyone say's that, but there is always some lame cheap ass with a lame crappy test trying to prove everybody is wrong.
And yes my opinion is not gonna change based on biased tests. I had two of the devices compared up there and clearly the N5 camera is a piece of crap on quality.
IPhone > Top tier Samsungs > OPO > lots of devices > Nexus

I feel like saying "learn to take pics" doesn't make sense - if the OP doesn't know how to take pics, their incompetence is constant over all devices ... in which case the comparison is still valid :highfive:
I didn't come here to defend the OPO camera, I've made a bunch of ****ty pictures with it myself, but in this test I actually like the OPO pictures the most. I downloaded them to check if maybe it's only because I'm looking at a downsized version, but even so they really seem the best.
I actually think this is one of the most OPO favoring comparisons I have seen.
You did name them correct, right?

Ya they're named properly, I was very careful about that (I'm sure the metadata will confirm as well). Anyway you seem reasonable, you even gave the pictures a close inspection; and I'm not here to fight either, so I'm curious whether you feel the OPO outperformed objectively (and if so, where), or if you just like its pictures best subjectively?
Off topic: I've done the iPhone 4s pictures too now, I'll upload them tomorrow. Spoiler alert: 4s does a damn fine job for a 3.5 year old phone without HDR on a 2.5 year old OS (I keep it on iOS 6 because **** an iPhone 4s on iOS 7 or higher). Figured I'd do it for the haters saying its unfair to compare the OPO to newer, more expensive devices.
I got one to test, and I am comparing it to my N5 from 2013.
It's true that the N5X camera focus waay faster, but it's NOT as instant as the S6/G4 camera for example, unless you're in a situation with a ton of light, you got to wait till it "focus" before shooting. But it is still much faster than the N5, ok.
But in the picture quality category, my N5 makes better fotos than the N5x in this situation (detail). I still don't understand this, but it is true: if I have the patience to focus on the N5, the photo is better than the N5x one (this in middle light situations).
I am not sure if this is normal or what, shooting with the N5 was a hell because the focus issue, but the results were better than the ones im getting with the N5x, even if in low light conditions N5x gets more info.
Why you compare the 300usd device with 500-700usd devices ?
If the 300usd device can do ALL 700usd devices do, why should people buy 700usd one?
As for camera n5 and n5x, i cant comment yet. Im waiting for my friend to bring it over from usa in 2 weeks time.
Based on the review floating on the internet, N5x camera is way better than N5. Probably you get a defective N5x
Today I've tested with a Nexus 6P from a friend, and same case: even in situations with a ton of light, my N5 does photos with more detail distance (but not better real colors and muuch slower focusing..) than this N5X and his N6P. Of course, the photo where you manage to focus...
I don't know why people says that "finally google put one of the best cameras on the Nexus", because the S6 edge from a friend and the Lg G4 from another blowed our N5X and N6P cameras out of the water. And the N6p is as expensive as a S6 edge and more than an LG G4 when they came out.
It's a good camera ok, but it is not at those level (which for me is OK). But the problem is that my Nexus 5 from 2013 is making photos with more detail than those 2!!!! and I don't like this at all . It is a better camera because it doesn't have the epic slow and bad focusing issue and it makes good low light photos and videos, but it is not one of the best on the market as people say! Let's keep things real. However fixing the slow focusing problem alone makes it a worthy upgrade from the N5.

Every review disagrees with you, but picture quality can be subjective. 6p and 5x are regarded as some of the best right now and just about every phone made in the last year made huge strides in camera quality.
What screen are you using to compare the pictures?

For my 5x the low light performance has just been incredible.
sell it or swap it. problem solved.
All this talk about photo quality and not one pic??? Show some examples....
Honestly this camera is great, especially comparing to phones around the same price point. Really, if you don't like it try to change it. Play with Manual Camera or Open Camera and see if you like it better.
Just got a N5X, my last phone was a galaxy S5, which had a good camera but there is no comparison, N5X camera its much better in all things. Some reviews put n5x camera better than iPhone 6S, I can't really say that is better but they are at the same level. Just love it. Especially the low light performance, its awesome.

I'm really loving the camera. I came from a 1st gen Moto G and the camera on that wasn't too bad, especially in well lit situations. I'm extremely happy with the 5X camera. The difference is like a foggy day compared to a clear day.

The problem is not with the camera hardware itself just the software and the Google stock camera app. However, it seems that Google is having a hard time solving this issue judging for lack of fixes during the last 4 months. I did returned my Nexus 5x but it was because the combination of this camera issue with a dead pixel (and the suddenly resurrection of my old Nexus 5).
I can't get it, I've had a N4, N5, OPT and N5X and I can say without a doubt that the N5X is the best camera phone I've ever had.
Nevertheless, I had to disagree with any reviewer saying N5 camera was bad, in my opinion one of the best cameras in a phone in its year, way better SGS4 or HOM7, great pictures in almost every condition

Hopefully they will remove the hard limit of shutter speed from the current 0.2s. I'd love to take light trails from this camera.
this is definitely the best camera in any phone i've had period.
Better than my OPO,Gnex, N5, N4, and better than my sister's iPhone 6 and 5.
The camera in my LG G4 was noticeably better. However, the 5X's camera is much better than the one on my iPhone 6s. And it's light years better than every previous Nexus phone I've owned.

Post a comparison of N5 and N5X where N5 is better or it did not happen.
Google nailed the IQ starting at N5X/6P only where is it as good as Galaxy S6 and certainly better than any iPhone offering to this date.

Hi,
A few years ago the cameras on the nexus were average to below average, I'm wondering if it has greatly imrpoved since then? It's the only thing stopping me from getting a nexus.
Thanks
? I would suggest checking the reviews and looking at the photos thread.
One of the first things that get called out is the improved camera quality.

The camera is very good, it takes some take outstanding photos. As the other person pointed out you can check the online reviews, and we have a photo thread in the general section.
I think both cameras are AMAZING! Ive went through s6 edge plus..iphone 6s plus..lg v10..and now nexus 6p. Front camera is really good and rear is amazing! I was bummed about no OIS+ but i havent had a problem and there is video stabilization i guess.
Excellent rear camera for sure! HDR+, Burst, etc.
Nexii cams used to be garbage, for sure, but that is NOT the case now.
Sure, the 6p might not have the best cam, but it's a solid competitor with everything available in a phone right now.
The camera is excellent for both photos and video in my experience. I'm very happy I got away from Samsung. Highly recommended.

Good apart from lack of OIS.
The camera is amazing. Detail, auto focus, HDR+, video is all amazing. But the 2 most impressive things to me by far are the low light photos and the zoom. Granted I'm coming from an s4, but the zoom is actually usable on this phone. The noose is minimal, focus is still pretty good. I was taking among pictures in a dark concert, zoomed in, no flash and they came out extremely well. You won't be disappointed.

I've heard too many negative reviews about the camera and that it can be a deal breaker..so which camera is better iphone 6's camera or the axon 7's camera?
Bought the phone because previous one was stolen few days before I went traveling in China. Been more than happy with the pictures it takes. Panorama is cool too. It struggled with low light, but it improving noticably with every update.
Uploaded a few pics from a national park in China for you. You be the judge. All pics were made with auto mode.

I have to say though. The iPhone costs $300 more. If you care so much go for the Galaxy S7 for camera (and Android)
Actually not that bad
I remember hearing tons of negative reviews on the camera and being worried that it wasn't going to be that good but after using the phone for about a week I can honestly say the camera is pretty good. It does struggle a bit in low light, though but that's simply because of the amount of megapixels. In my opinion, some reviewers are just a bit picky

I'm coming from a Nexus 6P and the Axon 7 camera just doesn't compare, especially in low light. The 6P had a great camera. That being said, since B27 came out things have improved noticeably and while the camera still isn't ad good as the 6P, it's more usable now and does produce decent enough shots in low and pretty good ones in good light.

Low light scenes are very challenging for the camera. ZTE really need to improve the HDR processing, where it can't touch 2015's Nexus phones and where it trails the much cheaper Honor 7.
There's not much sun where I am and I'm really noticing the difference.
You can certainly get better-looking results by playing with white balance in manual mode but that won't help you if you want to snap a darker foreground without blowing out all the background detail - a trick the Nexus phones' HDR+ excels at. I know they are deadly slow but I'd be happy to put up with much longer exposure times if it meant better pictures.
Could you please provide some selfie snaps as I'm kindda of a selfie guy?
Also I currently have the iPhone 5 so if the axon's camera is worse than the iphone 5 I might go with the oneplus 3 even though I hate its 1080p screen
