You know how delusional so many people on this forum are? How many times I've said the video on HTC One is jerky and makes me vomit and the OIS is almost non-existent? Well these videos are even more definitive proof, courtesy of GSMArena. First video has it up against the Lumia 920. The 920 is 10x smoother, although that was never a debate from the beginning. The last video shows the terrible night time performance of the HTC One. It blurs and drops frames constantly when in motion. It has always done this, but having it put side by side with something superior really rubs it in. The kicker is how much smoother the iPhone 5 is compared to the HTC One. The Galaxy S 4 has a similar software based stabilization with similar results. None of them drop frames or blur at night. The HTC One just loves bouncing around and jerking about.
If you are going to tout your camera so hard, expect the same amount of criticism, HTC.

Indeed, very good low light performance.
If you read anandtechs review they state why. The Lumia focuses on constant frames so it doesn't capture as much light. The one can get more light but it's frames drop slightly lower to 20ish. The OIS isn't as good as the limits but it's better than any other phone with EIS.

Still, One is the first smartphone Anandtech has ever given a gold medal. All other smarthphones were never given even one medal. Its camera was almost given a lot of praises. I wonder why.
Btw, those videos are from Anandtech, not GSMArena. Just sayin.

dang son going hard.
what you want?
I'm a videographer, and believe me a professional video camera cost USD4000 with OIS on might not do better than what the One did. We can only seriously applaud the Lumia for doing a superb job here. And believe me, a Canon 5D would do worse then the One in walking videos, much worse!
In the end, it boils down to what you want your video for. If I want my videos to look perfectly good, stable and constant frame rate, I wouldn't use a phone camera. Casual gatherings, family videos? Yes I will use the One as it is always with me and special moments usually come by when there is no camera equipments around. When I do use a phone camera for videos like these, I'd much prefer dropped framerate but able to capture details...It will be useless to me if I get smooth videos with no details in it.

Not bad at all I would say. 920 is super good indeed but I don't see how One is bad as a phone cam. and as the others said the source is Anandtech which gives about the best rating to One, so what's your point? I don't even know what you are angry about, if I don't like a brand or their ad then don't buy it. I would not bother angry to Nokia or Samsung if I don't like their product.
i dont see how this is bad. OIS is clearly there, though may not be as good as the 920 as expected. OIS in the 920 was made by Carl Zeiss if i'm not mistaken and it's really something out of this world. That said, the One is not far behind, having good OIS and dominating the low light recording section is a big win for me.
If I wanted a great camera I would buy one

Thanks op, you just help me win an argument over lumia camera stills being software gimmick crap. The video performance showed how truly crap the lumia camera is. Sure its 30fps but look at the light capturing on it?
P:s, a real camera will show bright viewfinder before snapping, while the lumia shows pitch black viewfinder, then lighten up the surrounding with software alteration.
The one x could do the same with its nightmode - hdr bug. Its all software

So far, this is the best low light camera comparison I have seen.
Thanks a lot :good:
Great low light performance, as for the image stabilisation HTC One is a smartphone with a decent camera not a phone attached to a superb camera.

(edit: more shots in post #6 below)
It probably doesn't come as a surprise to most of you: the iphone is still king.
It is sad that such an expensive phone with an 8M pixels camera still makes such poor pictures in 2010/2011, when my 10 years old 3M pixels Fuji camera (which is far from high end) has been making perfect shots for the past 10 years.
After the iphone with its great camera and the galaxy s with its great super amoled screen, HTC comes out with a new high end dream phone: old gen LCD screen and old gen camera. (Oh yeah, it does have a faster CPU and more RAM - this should make me feel much better, considering the Desire/N1 was almost unusable with its bad performance..... /sarcasm off).
Seriously, there's no excuse when the iphone can do so much better with a 5M camera.
Ok, these were taken with an engineering sample. But knowing HTC, do you believe this can improve when it releases in 2 weeks?
PS: and for those wondering about the video quality, it isn't better than what we have seen from the Desire, but the fps is more stable thanks to the faster cpu: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8202670&postcount=83
HTC simply doesn't give a rat's ass about photo & external speakers quality. That's all fine and dandy, but then they shouldn't label their devices with "HD" when they clearly aren't hd.
It's a shame that Nokia N8, whose only downside is that unlucky Symbian OS, will be cheaper than Desire HD. Actually, it's the other way around, it's a shame Desire HD will be more expensive than N8.
think imma skip this one. In fact, I'll skip all HTC's untill they start using better cameras and better speakers.
Photos were taken under poor lighting conditions, which effect the white balance, and noise and they are blurry (slow shutter speed).
Not the ideal test imo... I'd rather wait for some outdoor performance.
Iphone - King?
was just wondering... since when has the iphone become King of pictures?
I dunno about Iphone4, but when I compare the 3gs with my Desire, the Desire clearly takes better pictures, and in bad light conditions, the Iphone wont even shoot a decent picture (no flash) :/
If someone is the king of picture/video it must be sony ericsson.
Even though, I still think HTC makes quiet okay pictures outdoors in daylight.
Haven't heard of Iphone beeing better at this?

Well, we are talking about new phones coming out in 2010/2011, so of course I am talking about the iphone 4 and not the old iphone 3. Furthermore, keep in mind that you are comparing a new 2010 Desire with the old iphone 3.
In every comparative review I have seen the iphone 4 camera always comes out on top. It takes pictures that are at the beginning of something worth keeping, whereas the HTC cameras are just "okay", as you say, good enough if you want to show something to someone, but who would want to keep such horrible pictures in their photo album?
The iphone 4 shots, while not perfect, are something you can keep.
Anyway, we'll be seeing some more shots soon; I am still hoping for the best

The 8MP quality is quite poor, but the advantage with such a high resolution, is that once you resize the pictures and make them smaller it isn't bad at all anymore.
I think a good test would be to take a pic with the iphone 4 at 5MP and the same pic with the Desire HD at 8MP, and then resize it to 5MP to compare.
(reload the page if the pics don't load, or go to the above link and then reload the page. The remote site seems a little strange at times)

There goes your problem. The iPhone 4 really is very good at taking pics.
They became the king of pictures since the iPhone 4.
The video capture is also very good. Even better than those mini camcoders.

very true.
My laptop at 1600x900 is pretty high res, but i still need to make the 8mpx shots smaller to see the whole pic. After resizing the quality looks pretty damn good. Much sharper.
I hate iphone but fact is iphone pixture quality is brilliant compared to any htc phone. I'm fan of htc but do feel let down by their camera, video and sound quality. Having said this I well probably still purchase dhd as everything else they do pretty well im comparison to any other smartphone.
Htc always promises great things but tend to short change thier loyal customers with their cheap skate antics.
Early indications show that the camera in the HTC Desire isn't noticeably better (if at all) than the Desire - have to say that for a high end phone costing nearly £500 this is disappointing at best!

Not sure I agree with that. Most pupular perhaps but certainly not the best. Nokia have always had Apple licked in this department and I can't see that changing any time soon.
One of the big let downs of the Desire for me was the camera and audio quality, if this has not been improved I see no reason to dash out and buy these new models.

Right now all I am concerned about is the audio quality for recording. The evo had sucky sound quality from recording video, because of the stupid AMR codec, have they fixed that yet or what?

judging from the videos posted here, the DHD records in AAC format, with a sampling rate of 44.1 KHz at 65 Kbps. I think this is an improvement, but im not sure of the EVO's output. If someone knows where i can download an evo clip to compare..

It would be preferable to compare with the original clip, not one uploaded to youtube. I'll do some snooping.
edit: looks like the EVO only does 8 Khz compared to the DHD's 44 Khz. Not sure on the bitrate though.
second edit: EVO records audio at 12.8 kbps compared to DHD's 65 kbps. Huge difference.

If the figures are correct then it's very promising. However the youtube clip is not making me excited about the quality. I certainly hope it's better then the evo but I have lowered my expections as far as the camera, video quality is concerned. This way I won't be dissappointed. Simples.

The i-Phone may now be good at shooting but it's definitely not the King.
Have you seen shots and video taken on the Galaxy S?
They are amazing.
This is part down to a very good sensor with a nice low 2.3 f-stop making it ideal for low light shooting.
I was hoping so much for the Desire HD but if what is so far seen to go by there is nothing to whet my appetite.

According to the dozens of reviews and comparative tests I have seen, the Iphone 4 always comes out on top.
Yes, the Galaxy S is good (most of the time comes out 2nd behind the iphone4), but Iphone 4 is better.
For example, here is iphone 4 vs android video comparison (galaxy s, desire and nexus one): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t_v4EJT3aTg (at 0:22 you can click on each phone to get the big video for each).
As you can see, the iphone 4 is far above everything else (but I agree the Galaxy is not bad).
As for photo, here:
Galaxy S: http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_p9pmpIdf0q4/TI5bjpyyxuI/AAAAAAAAAi8/tfNGrB8CsGI/s1600/S16.jpg
Iphone 4: http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_p9pmpIdf0q4/TI5bi08vgZI/AAAAAAAAAi0/9-6SJY9Bkzw/s1600/I16.JPG
And there's more here (iphone 4 vs galaxy s): http://androidhd.blogspot.com/2010/09/test-iphone-4-vs-samsung-galaxy-s.html
Seriously, once you have seen the many comparisons on the net you can only see that the Iphone 4 being better really isn't open to discussion. (and no I never had and probably never will have an iphone).
edit: but I agree, the galaxy s is very good in low light conditions. Many complain about the absence of flash, but it does much better without a flash than most other phones with flash do.

Apologies and I say this with all sincerity but I don't need to see or read the comments on the net.
My remarks are based on actual usage of the GS and first-hand observations of the Desire and i-Phone 4 operating at the same time.
I don't know who took the shot using the GS but they most certainly did not use the phone correctly... It is exceptionally bad.
All it takes is for the lens to be very slightly to the right/left/up/down of a another shot to pick up differing light patterns which in turn can cause all manner of display issue.
I have no issue whatsoever with the i-Phone's camera, indeed it very good and a marked improvement over the i-Phone 3g.
But from a personal point of view I find it difficult to accept it being termed 'The King'..... But each to their own and I most certainly would not knock your opinion or observation.

Well, to me dozens of different testers (some amateurs and some professionals) can't be wrong. Especially when the iphone 4 never failed to come out on top.
And I really did a lot of research on this as I was about to get a GS myself (before deciding to wait for the Desire HD).
But of course, I am glad you are very pleased with the GS. This is the most important in the end, isn't it.

So lets summarize the Galaxy S:
- Buggy GPS, sometimes it works for some people, sometimes it doesn't
- Laggy phone, sometimes it lags... sometimes not...
- Buggy camera, sometimes it works great for some people, sometimes it doesn't...
Iphone 4: it just works.

Kicking off this week’s battle between the HTC EVO (unboxing) and Samsung’s Epic 4G (unboxing, update and Media Hub first run), is a post covering the cameras. First, a video walking through the software on each device, followed by a series of video and photo samples. All video samples were shot in 720p HD with reminaing settings left at defaults. Don’t forget to select 720p from the resultion playback menu for the YouTube vids! All still photos have been resized to 600 pixels wide–Epic’s 5MP images were scaled down from 2560 X 1920 (max resolution), and EVO’s 8MP shots were scaled down from 3264 X 1952 (also max resolution). All other settings were left at their defaults.

Yikes, hate to say it...... but you know........
someone needs to figure out how to get our fps up on cam record!!!! this hurts... lol
I really don't understand the fascination of mega pixels on smartphones. It's good for marketing but when it comes to actual use.. you realize that they probably sacrificed the quality of the sensor for a higher number. A good example of this is the FF cam, the EVO's shoots at 1.3 MP and the iPhone 4's shoots at a measly VGA resolution, yet the difference in quality is like night and day (in favor of the iPhone 4).
All things being equal, more is better but I'd still argue that a high MP count is useless on smartphones. It takes up more space and is very, very rarely ever going to be displayed at full resolution. 99% of the photos you take on a smartphone will be resized for use on Facebook/Twitter/MMS/or general web use.
I hope HTC realizes this when designing their future phones.
Does the evo video just suck when its at such a high resolution? Is framerate better when you lower the resolution?
wonder if the fps unlock will effect the video camera as well.
Wow, I used to think our camera was good. Very good comparison though, especially the night video. Even the sound quality on the Epic is great. Too bad everything else about it sucks.
^^ exactly, you're gonna use the camera like what, 1-2 days per month, at the most. But I use my 4.3inch lcd screen every single day. Suck on that.

How do you know how much I use my camera? And I can bet MOST people here use the camera a lot more than 1 - 2 days per month. Plus the Epic's Super AMOLED screen is also A LOT nicer than ours. Thats about all the Epic has over the EVO though.

The CPU/GPU (which downright crushes the EVO) and Super AMOLED screen doesn't suck. I was also pretty satisfied by the size of the display the couple of times that I've seen a Galaxy S phone. It's definitely not perfect but there's no need to be a EVO fanboy.
In my tests with the evo and epic in video, I found some interesting results to me at least. Note, I haven't looked at the article posted by op yet. I found that when both are set to 1280x720 and 640x480, the epic has color saturation that seems closer to real life than the evo. Evo's was exaggerated. The epic's focus seemed a little sharper. Those two resolutions were the only ones I saw that both had in common, so that's what I tested at. One bad thing about the epic was when it was at 1280, after a few minutes or less, the camera app would crash with an error and the video was corrupted. I shortened the time at that resolution to about a minute and the test was fine. I didn't include sound in testing because my car was too noisy and would be too irritating to listen to during playback. I haven't posted them to youtube yet because I want to do an effect of putting both videos together side by side but I can't figure out how to do that easily. I don't have any experience in that end of video editing. I also noticed something that is already known to many people, the evo compresses the video too damn much and the video looks pretty bad sometimes. The filesizes from the epic are noticeably larger because it isn't compressing as much. I forget if there was an encoder choice in the phones or not. I might have remembered that from another rom...
I am not, repeat not, trying to slam the evo. I still love that phone very much. I'm just reporting my findings and opinion.
I have the evo and the epic and the camera is way better on the epic then the evo even taking pictures at night the epic looks like it was day time full color everything on the evo you see pixels from a picture shot in the dark
Send from Your Mothers Basement
makes me wanna trash my evo and get an epic or wait till next year for gingerbread
Wow. HTC can't code camera drivers worth ****t. HTC camera is from the same company as the iPhone 4's camera...I see why Samsung used the phone to film the TV ads...The HD video looks damn good!
Tooo bad the G S has so many other problems that Samsung will never fix. Apple is really good as getting everything working perfectly, at least.

well in that case you should of bought a camera instead.
Samsung always has and probably will continue to have a better phone cameras than HTC. Thats one thing Sammy does right. Too bad the cons outweigh the pros in everything else though.
My Samsung moment pics Id say were on par with the EVO if not a little better, and the max was 5mp with that phone. I never got that motion blur that I get using HTC.
I actually don't care which camera is best or video, it's handy to have for the odd this or that kind of thing. But I carry a camera for quality pictures and a camcorder for movies if I'm going somewhere that I know I will want that sort of thing.
There are times when you just don't have the camera or camcorder handy, so in that case use the phone.
I too got the EVO for the 4.3" screen so I can see it without having to put glasses on.
I just bought the Kodak Playsport HD Camcorder. I doubt the camera issue will ever get fixed

qft. If you want high quality pics then you should have a camera. There is a reason why cameras are still being sold even though most phones have a built in one.

That's not the problem. 28fps is plenty enough for smooth motion. The video recording just sucks in general on HTC phones. Even the official "two girls walking into sunlight and then turning back to smile" video is jerky and not completely smooth. HTC is claiming they have OIS, but I don't see any evidence of it at all. In fact, disregarding jerkiness, the video just really really sucks. The colors are completely off and overly red and gaudy. The motion of objects in the video have a nauseatingly awkward movement to them. The details and colors are all smeared looking and cartoonified. It doesn't look natural or real at all. All these issues are evident in the HTC One X, Sensation, Desire HD, etc. They are not unique to the HTC One. I've been *****ing about how terrible HTC's video recording is for years now, and even now in 2013 it's still the same old crap.

I think its a problem of build because i had a Desire HD and when I installed the rom from sabsa prime, the latest, the câmera is working without loosing fps and on Endeavoru I just changed the build.prop configuration and the issue minimized. I'll be waiting the custom rom to see this fix.

Those vids could be early software design.
On my epic 4g touch I get crappy video with AOSP and great video with the stock rom. My AOSP vids look like these vids being posted which is simply due to un-optimized codecs for the processor.
I'm sure this wont be the case with the final builds.
HTC is claiming that the UltraPixel camera on the HTC One will be able to capture 300 percent more light than competitors. You can shoot 1080p HD videos, HDR videos and there's a single LED flash for even better low-light shooting.
^ Is it comparable to sony xperia z 13mp cam ?

The Speria pics look worse than my E4GT.
I've been in the camera bix for years and one thing is for sure, if you pack more dots into a smaller area the dots are then smaller. Less surface area means less light hits it and therefor less color spectrum capture and less light band capture. The reason SLR cameras can hit the higher pixels is due to the CCD size. The CCD is WAY bigger in the SLR than any cell phone so it can capture more color spectrum and more light bands.
I for one think that the camera in the HTC One will really stun people when they actually use it next to their old phone.
I have the same problem
I hope HTC focuses on an update. It took forever to get anything when I have the evo 4g
Every video or picture I've seen from the HTC One (especially the videos) have looked average to flat out bad.. Really hope this is just due to insufficient software optimization and will be corrected before release as right now it's not looking too good.

I've heard this liine a I've heard this line a million times, for dozens of phones I've followed through the years. Either from delusional people, from fanboys, or just simply ignorant people who don't follow this stuff closely. Images taken from the demo unit that's trotted out to the press when it is announced will not magically grow wings and transform into something else on the final product, especially when there's only a few weeks til launch. Even going from alpha stages, with the final camera hardware is decided, the difference is marginal. You really think they have to start from the ground up building software for the camera for every single new smartphone? Like a puppy who is blind at birth and it's eyes open after a few weeks? It is not only ridiculous, but it has never been true. In my eyes, it doesn't. It does well and certain lighting conditions i do have to say but for most of the shots ive seen like the iphone vs. HTC One camera, the iPhone did better in nearly all of them to me. Once people get the non-demo models though we'll be able to see what others think.

To get some idea of how well the camera on any phone performs in different lighting hastag its name on Instagram
I personally am jealous of the camera on the iphone 4s/5. They seem to produce the sharpest pictures on Instagram and Facebook!
We can't tell yet the device software is not final and HTC didn't lift the reviews embargo yet and the didn't post many official samples either
Normally, I would like to see dpreview's comments for any camera reviews. gsmarena's camera section is also decent.
I think the argument is unless you're wanting to print photos on huge canvases etc then 4mp is more then enough for Facebook etc that most people use their camera phones for. And if you can develop a 4mp camera that is high quality with low light performance you're basically giving the majority what they want and need.
As a photo enthusiast I am glad to see them trying to get closer to what's necessary and needed rather then having a medium quality high pixel camera that I'll never use for top notch shots. I have a DSLR for that.

From a lot of comparisons I saw, there's no doubt that the best available mobile camera is Nokia 920 but hey, it's a windows phone.
Recently Sony released a Firefox OS ROM for some xperia phones. If Nokia decided to do the same releasing an oficial android ROM for Lumia series I could think about buying one but, that's not the case.
And about HTC One camera, maybe it's not the best but it's great enough for me.

When Maemo was in the transition of replacing symbian as nokia's primary OS they suddenly appointed a new CEO which came from Microsoft. And few months after they decided to ditch support for maemo & meego and decided to partner with windows. So most likely the reason why they went windows and not android is because microsoft infiltrated their administratiion. It all started with Stephen Elop.
How about Apple releasing iOS version for Lumia 820 and 920? Hahahha Nokia and android too much optimistic thought but let Nokia fall down again I think Nokia is under Microsoft's debt and ms is hypnotised Nokia to save their reputation in mobile world, Nokia will show their true color when his debt from Microsoft has finish atm Nokia don't want to angry Microsoft coz ms has been heavily feeded Nokia to make him healthy

I think it's a perfectly good OS, my sister has it. Very fast and fluid for what its a cheap phone.
I think they went with WP as they will be the manufacturer associated with it. Think iOS, think Apple (obviously) but for Android most people will automatically think Samsung.
I'd like to reiterate again, that demo units and preview units with unfinalized software have NEVER made a difference (for any phone) in the final quality of the camera. It'll be released in a few weeks. If it's **** now, it will still be **** later on. No more excuses. Optimism is no excuse for stupidity.
Here's one big problem with the HTC One. The 4MP is 4MP. You can go on and on about how it doesn't matter for facebook, but if we are going to place smartphone cameras to a higher standard (HTC says so), this compromise is almost dealbreaking. It's one step forward, two steps back. I take pictures of menus and sheets of paper and murals and such with text quite frequently. Even my Galaxy S2 with 8MP is sharper and easier to read than the blurry and poorly defined text the HTC One takes. Here's a text comparison.
http://www.gsmarena.com/htc_one-review-902p6.php
That's what you sacrifice with low resolution. Resolved detail. The text images are just the easiest way to see the problem with low resolution. It extends far beyond just text, Blurry faces, undefined outlines, and blur in general.
The other problem. The touted low light performance seems to be overblown. If you sacrifice megapixels for better low light, and the low light doesn't deliver, you just shot yourself in the foot. Here's a comparison in low light with the Nokia 920 and 720.
http://www.phonearena.com/news/HTC-One-vs-Nokia-Lumia-920-and-720-low-light-comparison-video_id40344
You can see the giant ass blotches of noise and grain, because the HTC image blows up the lighting and makes the noise and grain even more apparent. There's no fine detail, just a smear of color. Compared to the Lumia 920, it's almost like it has no OIS at all and the "ultrapixels" mean diddly squat. Most damning of all, is that the budget Lumia 720 takes better low light pictures. It doesn't have fancy OIS nor the same large pixels.
There are many more examples of the poor low light performance scattered about the net. This is the thing HTC touted as better than the rest, but so far its just middling if not mediocre.
In summation. If you want an average camera, or say "I don't give a shiz it's a camera-phone", this phone will fit the bill. But if you were expecting something more, some sort of major progress, you won't find it here. You will be better off with the Lumia 920 and its OIS. Or wait for the Lumia 1000 EOS which will even give point and shoot cameras a run for their money. But right now this is just a half-hearted attempt by HTC, with plenty of money thrown at advertising it but no confidence in making it a reality wit a bigger sensor, more pixels, better OIS, etc. The Galaxy IV will probably have a better camera. Hell, the Galaxy II and III have better cameras.

I looked through all the demo pictures and the ones taken by reviewers at MWC and the pictures where on par or better than the competition.
As for that GSM arena review, they describe the quality as being sharper and better overall than the LG G but then have photos that are blurry and say it is the One pictures but they don't match the full size pictures at the bottom of their review so I don't quite trust that source.
Honestly, if you want to take great pictures buy a point and shoot camera or a DSLR as nothing in a phone is going to out match them.
here are some samples from the One vs Nokia 920 and 720
I think HTC could have been a big contender to the galaxy S IV but will be dismissed by the average consumer because of the "poor" 4 ultrapixel camera, i dont get how a company struggling to sell would do such a thing , i love that they took a risk but maybe they should have waited until they had profits again, what do you think people is going to do when they go to buy a phone and see that the camera on the one is "just" 4 megapixels vs 13 megapixels on the galaxy S IV?
8 ultrapixels would have been great, also the daylight pictures are less than spectacular, the one x/xl takes better pictures at daylight ,lets see how turns out for HTC, i fear it wont be the best outcome :crying: , such a shame that "the best" will lose
So far seeing pictures taken against the iPhone 5, Galaxy S4, etc... I think they made the right choice. It takes some really nice pictures.
You are ignorant, HTC One along with Lumia taking the best photos in market at the moment. before coming up with a topic like that learn to check to results please.
But yeah, one thing is clear, people like you will think "hmm, 4 mp is bad i should get S4 because of that" and get S4. That is the only downside of the idea. Which I'm hoping wouldn't be a problem because noone is telling that it is 4 mp, they are marketting it as Ultrapixel Camera as a whole phrase, which is working relatively well.
You are right. While the tests seem to show, that the camera is really awesome and isn't worser than the 13 MP one the majority of people are still getting their phones direct from the store and deciding basically from the specs and the general appearance. I hope HTC will profit at least from their design and aluminium body this year.
Only ignorant consumers purchase items based on just numbers...
Education is key.
Many reviews show that its the second best on the market, after 808 and just beating the N95. Lesser pixels are also needed to process in the Zoe mode. So my conclusion will be it isn't a "poor" or "unnecessary" change. In fact, it's proving to be one of the best cameras (obviously if you don't print your photographs in full size)

That true no one has told me its a 4mp camera in shops, they say 4 ultra pixel.
Also when I played with the phone and compared pics to the xz and and s3 etc it blew them away which is one of the reasons there is a lovely silver HTC One sitting on my desk charging right now.
Also regarding charging, battery life for me so far is great: seeing as I had to send stuff to the phone yesterday it got charged to 61% before I took if off the usb at aprrox 1.30pm yesterday and started using it: screen 30% bright, power saver on, all connections off unless I need them, playing some music, generally looking at the phone, a bit of internet browsing, mostly phone calls and texts and the battery was on 6% at about 10 am this morning and I went to bed at 2am.
Btw the this is the same pattern i do for all phones I have 30% brightness and power saver. I will be able to properly judge when its actually charged to 100% though and compare it to my others phones bar the note 2 where it will clearly lose.
Actually there is still noise in the images on the 4MP sensor, but less than a 13MP for sure in low light.
HTC made a deliberate decision that a phone camera is more utilized to pictures of family, friends when you go out somewhere like a restaurant, bar etc. In those circumstances good low light performance is essential and you don't need (in fact you don't want) to see the highest resolution possible on people's faces etc
You only really need 13MP when you are shooting landscape. In the case of Sony, they try and incorporate a camera that is more aimed towards tourist pictures. During the daylight, the resolution advantage will be clear to see on detailed scenes.
Personally, I do not use my phone as a replacement for a good camera. I use it exactly as HTC considered, incidental photos when out with friends and to keep memories of those occasions.
Having said that, it is not the best 4MP sensor...it should really have been even better (less noise). So while I think HTC did play a gamble here, and to some extent, there is a good amount of logic behind their decision...the implementation is still not as good as I would have hoped. It is just possible that software updates will improve its performance further.

The noise problem was with prerelease software, if you see the photos now, there's way much less noise
From USA Gizmodo:
Another pleasant surprise: the camera's UltraPixels actually live up to the hype. In our testing the One performed as well as if not better than the top smartphone shooters out there (check out our comparison). It also took better low-light (read: in bars) photos than any phone I've used, and I was extremely impressed by how accurate the color rendering was. Now, if you're planning on printing your photos on 8x10s, maybe you'll miss the extra megapixels, but who really does that with their phone cam? For the web, you won't be able to tell the difference in resolution, and you will be able to tell the difference in low-light.

There is no update. I definitely have the most current release on the phone. I think it was just my expectations were too high. Don't get me wrong, it takes great pics.
I think that it will be very important for in-store signage of the HTC One show the comparison of the HTCs photo quality against "the others". They can't leave it to the uninformed general public or the uninformed sales staff to simply look at point form notes on the phone spec
AW: HTC risked itself unnecessarily with the 4 ultrapixels camera
And... Megapixels are nothing. It is all about the sensor and the lense. It is time to stop that Megapixel hype... Just look at the S4... 13mp on a damn small sensor, I guess you will not see a difference between my 1S and the S4...

4mp should of NEVER been banded about because in work people were going 'Omg the HTC ONE only has a 4mp camera.... who would want that' and then you have to explain it to them etc....
It was a risk but it should of just been left at 'Ultrapixel' and not compared to a megapixel count.
x3
I personally as a Photographer like their decission.
Remember the Foveon X3 Chip. If HTC manages to get something more out of that technique, they will get much better results.
At first saw no difference with the quality from the x. Now after a few dozen photos. There is a difference.close up shots capture loads of detail
Sent from my HTC One using xda app-developers app
First of all, I think that HTC from the quality point of view made the right decision. The camera appears better than sufficient - for the ordinary smartphone user that is. HTC's approach is different, I think: Remember "Friend Stream" in Sense? Now it is "Blinkfeed". My impression is that HTC bets on that users will shoot more photos if the photos can be uploaded to FB and other social networks quicker and thus in bigger numbers thanks to their smaller size. Photos go up easier to the Dropbox storage, too. The camera with 4 megapixels only is really more usable.
In the end the photo quality debate is a "luxury issue", the "ordinary" customer will not see a quality issue in the images. But the fact that he/she can really easily share their photos shot with the One - which they in real life can't with photos from their Samsung and other phones due to the sheer size of the images - this must be communicated to the customer. In addition, 32 GB built in storage on the One due to the difference in size of the camera's images in real life equal 50 GB storage on the Samsung.
To my opinion, therefore the success of the HTC One is not so dependent on the question whether 13 megapixels are better than 4 (or vice versa), but on the question whether they succeed in explaining the potential of smaller image files to the masses. My serious concern is, that even HTC and their marketing people are not aware really, what HTC's development department had in mind.
