Changing "OK Google" to a song or whistle - Nexus 6 General

I just recieved my nexus 6 coming from a moto x and i heard that the nexus 5 had an easter egg where it would also respond to "ok jarvis". Well since this is a moto made phone I wanted to see whether it had the capabilities. I also read where the moto x could respond to whistles as well. I went into the google now settings for always on and trained my voice. When i said something other than "ok google" it wouldnt take it but after the third attempt it would take what ever you said. So I successfully train my nexus to the following: ok jarvis, ok google, andy griffin theme song, hunger games 3 note whistle. You do have to be dead accurate when whistling. Word of caution. This only works to wake up your phone from sleep or from another app other than the launcher and googlw now. Very nice cool factor.

This great. I've trained my nexus to wake up with 'Nexus On..'

Pretty nifty will try when i get home!

if you use a custom launcher(nova prime) you can launch from anywhere but Google now app, neat!

I cant get this to work, for me it keeps forcing me to says OK Google.

Got it working everywhere apart from Nova (and Google app of course but I don't care about it), did you change something else to make it work?

[Q] Touchless Control and Active Notifications

In my never-happy search for smartphone coolness, I now find myself (a SG4 owner and loving it) jealous of 2 of Moto X's upcoming features.
My question: are there any apps that replicate each piece of functionality
1. Touchless Control (especially if light on battery, and not requiring the quickly-tedious"OK Google Now" word phrase)
2. Active Notifications (I guess the quick glance on the S4 where you hover your hand over the sensor is OK, but it's kind of flaky, and also doesn't make benefit of the only-the-active-pixles AMOLED capability
Cheers!
I also would like to know something that replicates active notifications.

Would love to envoke Google now with a phrase or word... It'd help not want a moto x so much

I've just published an app that's similar to the "Active Display" feature of the Moto X, check out the XDA-thread here. At the moment, it only works on devices running Android 4.3, so it will only work on your SG4 if you've manually updated it to 4.3.
Finally a reason to root thanks! Will check it out

Okay, that solves the Notifications. Now how about the Touchless Control? If anyone was wondering, I know that you can use Tasker plus AutoVoice to accomplish this. But it doesn't run the same and it is really quite annoying. You have to enable it and disable it via two toggles you put on your homescreen or via permanent notification in the status bar. I have done it but it's a pain in the butt and looks messy in my opinion.
For all those not on 4.3, check the app
Knock2+ http://knock2.info
It's great!!
I'd really list to see the active listening feature ported to the GS3 and other phones but for right now this is the best replacement.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.RSen.OpenMic
It does the job but it's still in development and pretty buggy.

This is an ancient thread. I was trying to accomplish "OK, Google" but now Google has this implemented across all devices very efficiently. I have no use for autovoice anymore.
Thanks anyway. :good:

AT&T Note 3 GPS Navigation Issues

First off, the phone I was using before I got the Note 3 was the original AT&T Galaxy Note, so my expectations for the Note 3 were pretty high. When I used the Google Nav app on the OG Note, I really liked how reliable it was and the many options it had like picking routes without tolls for example (my favorite :good. The only gripes I had about the OG Note was that occasionally, it would take over a minute or two to get a GPS signal. But once it did, it worked like a champ!
So now we move on to the Note 3.
The first thing I noticed was that there was no dedicated app for Google Navigation. I looked on the Google Play store and I didn't find it there either. So when I checked Google Map app, I saw that that was the only way I could access the navigation feature. Personally, I'm not a fan of Google deciding to merge to two apps together, but I guess in the long run, it'll make sense over time.
Now, another issue I noticed when I first used the navigation feature was the HUGE lack of options navigation is missing. Like I said previously, the OG Note had a lot of features and options that let you tweak how you wanted to set your routes. But the Note 3's navigation 'options' are almost bare-bones! On the settings tab on the lower left hand side, the options you have are things like Google location settings, distance units, and maps history; So I'm like "what the hell?!" So then, when I set my route, I try to see if the options are imbedded in the GPS map screen when you start to use the GPS nav, but.... there's only 4 options (route preview, step-by-step list, mute voice guidance, and satellite view :crying. What the hell happened to the other options?! Is there some way to get to the other options that I'm not aware of? I really hope so.
Now, as I start to drive to the destination I had set for my route, I notice even MORE issues. First thing I notice to my dismay is that the GPS voice sounds... off (and that's putting it nicely). It just sounds muffled and to me, it seems like the voice doesn't finish the end of the words properly - kind of off putting, IMO. Also, I noticed that when I stopped my vehicle, the little blue triangle that indicates your position on the map tends to move slightly more forward before it completely stops movement. Also, I saw that while at a complete stop, the map starts to go in circles, leading one to believe that the routes changed on the fly (I can see this as a problem if one were to look away from the screen for a bit, and then once you move, the map fixes it's direction again, and that could lead to some confusion while you're trying to momentarily figure out what happened).
So there you have it. That's my experience with the Note 3's newer version of Google Maps. Perhaps It's my phone that's having issues with it's GPS functions. So I'd like to know from others here if they're having similar issues with their navigation.
thats actually google's doing, you'll find that on all new versions of the os
Indeed, like tom said above, this is google's updated version of maps that happened months ago. Consider yourself lucky that you never updated it on your older Note. There's been many complaints about them stripping out features that were once in the older version of maps. In my note 2, I at least had an option to uninstall the update after I tried it out but since our Note 3 came with the newer version preinstalled, there is no older version to revert back to.
Once I feel comfortable with our root options, i'll sideload the old apk back in.
The one thing that is Samsung's issue that you mentioned was the voice. For some reason or another, Samsung stripped out Google's default TTS engine. I really have no idea what the reasoning behind this is, but.. there you have it. You're stuck with Samsung's TTS engine or some other third party one in the market.
Got spoiled with Note 1 and 2. Exchanged my Note 3 after comparing GPS with Tmo and AT&T showroom displays. Replacement is better but not spot on accurate as 1&2.
New one has sloppy home button tho

I used the GPS 3 times today on the Note 3 and had no issues. I actually like the new Google Maps, it seems like more accurate than before.
It has nothing to do with the note. Update your old phones apps and SURPRISEEEE!!! You have the new app. I highly doubt your arrow is spinning if it is restart your phone. Your compass needs to calibrate, move your phone in a figure 8 pattern. You're nitpicking and have no reason to blame the note. HTC Motorola and everyone else has your same "problems". Get over it. You want another route option right after you enter your destination the options are right there. You're not accepting of change. Yea the maps app is new just live with it.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N900A using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
yeah. i like the old google map better, it also ask you what navigation app you want to you. so you can use your favorite navigation app.
i tried the new google map, it' useable, it' not that bad.
if you want to use your favorite navigation app, just install a older version of google map and dont update it.

my note 3 is having an issue also - the arrow to indicate the position you are traveling is pointed about 15 degrees clockwise... i am going to keep checking and hopefully it gets better.
First thing, the "two apps" were always the same. There were just two launchers. And if you want the old launcher back, the intent is still there. Just create it. Super simple if you're using Nova, just create shortcut->all->maps->navigator.
And yes, going through the "Maps" application is a lot more taps, it's actually pretty silly. They've made it a little better in the most recent version but it's still 3-4 taps, and I've heard navigating to Contacts is worse too but I haven't done that recently.
Google Now still works I guess, as long as it recognizes the destination
You can down grade your maps to the old version. Go in the App info and uninstall update

I am having the same exact issue, as well as I am 30+ ft from my current location. I have also tried numerous calibration softwares that have worked on other phones, with no avail. Time for me to stop by AT&T since its still in the 14 day exchange period.

Hi Guys,
I had the same problem with my phone as well. Found an upgrade to 7.3 and it seems to have fixed the 30 degree offset problem. I tried Waze buy prefer Google maps. 7.3 is available.
Not sure where I found it but I do have the apk file. Would be glad to send it anyone who wants it.
Update: The 30 degree problem has returned. I have tried several GPS programs and all of them that give heading information eventually show the offset of the heading. Phone will be exchanged today as I can't determine if it is hardware or software. Also, the compass continues to be off as well when it receives GPS info.

I really enjoy how my Note 3 navigates. I'm from Omaha and have been using it to get around Kansas City (which I'm really not familiar with) all weekend. The only thing I wish it had is a history so I wouldn't have to keep lookng up my hotel every time I want to return there. Other than that, it's been working flawlessly.

Nexus X

I just switched over from a Nexus 5 to the Moto X. For starters I must say the I found he Nexus 5 extremely suitable to my needs (I've used pretty much every single flagship device out there).
I personally think Google has done a phenomenal job with KitKat.
Once I received my Moto X and turned it on, I was greeted with what seemed to be the Jelly Bean launcher but when I checked the firmware version it was indeed 4.4.2.
I used it a few days but found my self missing the feel of KK launcher on my N5.
I then side-loaded the official N5 launcher on to my MX and must say.. To me now this is by far the best phone I've ever owned.
Great Moto X functionality with the minimalist look and feel of the N5. Win.
Give it a try.. I think you might just like what you get.

It lacks certain substances to be a true Nexus. Nexus phones are much easier to unlock bootloader, flashing without risking bricking, and much more rom developers.
Currently I'm using my Moto X without root, but I am looking forward to a Nexus phone that have touchless control.
OK, I've installed it, but I feel like I'm missing something. I can't find any settings to this launcher, can't add more homescreens, can't change app drawer orientation. What can this do what e.g. Nova can't? I don't see it.

You have to hold the home screen to open up widgets and settings but there is also an xposed module for it that let's you customize it more. You have to drag an app to the next screen to make another home screen like an iPhone. It is googles launcher which is integrated with Google now. You can say OK Google on the homescreen and it interacts with Google now, but I mean our phones do that without even having to turn it on.

Supposedly rumors is Motorola will make the new nexus 6 and it will come with the latest 4.5 or 5.0. But I mean there have been reports that the n5 has had so many bugs and Google is suppose to release another update. But its past all the incremental updates like Google usually releases. So it seems like the n5 was a bust a disappointment?

Nexus 5 had a bad camera. What's really funny is Google had a commercial where a couple run off to the woods in a moonlit night and take pictures in really dark light and the pictures turn out great. Anyone who has owned the N5 know that is not possible. The phone had or has a tagline of "capture moments in epic new ways" or something along those lines. Whatever man...

It's all about perspectives. The Nexus 5 to me was a bigger bang for your buck than any other phone out there. The camera by no means is absolutely crap nor is it the best one out there. What it is though is a good camera; specially when you consider the price tag. It also has many great things going for it like the form factor, the engine under the hood, the display...etc and not to mention the smoothest Android experience money can buy.
For me personally, it was one of my favourite devices matched only by the Butterfly S and now the Moto x.. again for me..

I hopefully does it, because after getting use to it on my g3, i catch me some times trying to wake my other devices with double tap

I'm not a fan of bringing back dead posts but double tap to wake does not work on the nexus 6, or at least not on mine.
I'm still hoping they included it, just not yet enabled. Or maybe a dev can activate it, especially since it is on the Nexus 9. Key will be if the digitizer and screen are on different power planes so as not to drain battery.

I hope a Dev can enable it with a new kernel I miss that from my G3
Its only worth enabling if it doesn't completely drain the battery IMO ... and that depends on hardware .. thats the reason why Nexus 5 couldnt really use it ( even after activated by the devs ) because the hardware wasn't right :
It had to keep power to the entire screen rather than just the digitiser, thats why the G3 etc don't drain the battery .. lets hope the Nexus 6 screen is built to supply different power to the digitiser and actual screen

[TRICK] Double tap to wake, without tapping.

Hey guys, first post on the nexus 6 forums, just got mine a week ago. I'm sure many of you miss the notification light that most of us are use to. I know we can use the app lightflow to get the hidden led to light up but that is not what this is about. I for one miss double tap to wake on my G3 and Oneplus but there is another way and most of you already have the option activated. This magical setting, Ambient Display.
Instead of picking up the phone like a good boy or girl from your desk to check if there are notifications waiting, simply tap either the extreme right or left of the phone and this act will shake it causing the sensors to think you moved the phone and the ambient display will knock on. For those who don't follow, since the nexus 6 back is shaped like a U or curved tapping either side would cause the phone to rock.
That's it, just something I noticed and I did not see it mentioned anywhere, give it a try, no more picking up phones to check the time. Enjoy.
or, get root and use the real double tap to wake. you can get it working by app, or by kernel of choice. its actually included in the code for the n6, but not enabled. you can easily enable it, if you have root. besides, ambient display uses battery, and wakes often in the pocket(and gets really annoying).

Ambient display doesn't wake up in my pocket. Chroma pocket mode. ? Still has to poll the prox sensor though, but I'm sure this would use less battery than the display waking up.

Does double-tap-to-wake work reliably in 5.1.1? I tried it ages ago with 5.0.1 and found it often would require several extra taps to wake it up. I might root and try again if it works better now...
Oh! I didn't know this. I was missing that feature and I had it all the time.
Thanks for the tip.
On Chroma, Doubletap to wake using the wakegestures.apk is about 85-90% reliable in waking on the first doubletap, its not too big a deal.
Double tap to sleep is 100% reliable first time for me just like a g2-g3.
Nova launcher + screen lock and off app works amazing.

No it wasn't. Moto X's along with their Droid variants use IR sensors in the corners to detect movement. Thats not how Ambient Display works (which is quite a bit inferior).

IR sensors were not used on the Moto X 2013. The nexus 6 "rocking" works the same as that phone, though Moto X seemed more sensitive from what I remember.

Huh. I had a Droid Ultra back then and I could have sworn it used ir sensors.
I stand corrected.
Does this kill the natural ambient notification? I would actually prefer both. Sometimes I just want to see if there are notifications without opening the display. Then would want to use the knock when I'm actually planning on using the phone

It does not kill the native ambient display. Both can work together.

Nope. Now you know why Google never left it enabled.

Works well in my experience (on 5.1.1). I do notice that it works most of the time if I'm holding the phone at an angle, but it works every time if I hold the phone vertically. That was also the case with motion launch on my m8 so maybe it's by design to avoid accidental waking? I suspect people who don't find it working could be having the same issue.
