Nexus X - Moto X General

I just switched over from a Nexus 5 to the Moto X. For starters I must say the I found he Nexus 5 extremely suitable to my needs (I've used pretty much every single flagship device out there).
I personally think Google has done a phenomenal job with KitKat.
Once I received my Moto X and turned it on, I was greeted with what seemed to be the Jelly Bean launcher but when I checked the firmware version it was indeed 4.4.2.
I used it a few days but found my self missing the feel of KK launcher on my N5.
I then side-loaded the official N5 launcher on to my MX and must say.. To me now this is by far the best phone I've ever owned.
Great Moto X functionality with the minimalist look and feel of the N5. Win.
Give it a try.. I think you might just like what you get.
EDIT: Link to JUSTrollin's post where you can find info on the launcher:

Which launcher is that? GEL? And where did you install it from?
What does it offer you extra?

Yeah more info is appreciated

I think he's talking about this launcher, which works with Moto X without any modification.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-4/themes-apps/apps-google-experience-launcher-gel-app-t2529594

You can use OK Google now without ever touching your phone.

Yes, I like the larger icons and the swipe left to google now. I think it should be there stock.

Yeah, I posted in our Theme and Apps section about this same topic:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2639891
I really enjoy the GEL launcher and the phone itself. The combo of the launcher and touchless makes it the best phone I have used to date as well.

Yes it is the GEL launcher. What I did was disable the 'hot word detection' on Google now. Instead, I use the built in voice recognition of Moto X " OK. Google Now". It works better for me that way.

It lacks certain substances to be a true Nexus. Nexus phones are much easier to unlock bootloader, flashing without risking bricking, and much more rom developers.
Currently I'm using my Moto X without root, but I am looking forward to a Nexus phone that have touchless control.

OK, I've installed it, but I feel like I'm missing something. I can't find any settings to this launcher, can't add more homescreens, can't change app drawer orientation. What can this do what e.g. Nova can't? I don't see it.

You have to hold the home screen to open up widgets and settings but there is also an xposed module for it that let's you customize it more. You have to drag an app to the next screen to make another home screen like an iPhone. It is googles launcher which is integrated with Google now. You can say OK Google on the homescreen and it interacts with Google now, but I mean our phones do that without even having to turn it on.

I have posted on the nexus 5 threads and have recommended a lot of people to get the moto x. The nexus 5 was a disappointment in my eyes and Motorola should have been the one to make the 5, not lame LG. I will not buy nexus of LG keeps making them.
BTW, I purchased the n5 on release date and returned it after 3 days because the battery was horrible.

Supposedly rumors is Motorola will make the new nexus 6 and it will come with the latest 4.5 or 5.0. But I mean there have been reports that the n5 has had so many bugs and Google is suppose to release another update. But its past all the incremental updates like Google usually releases. So it seems like the n5 was a bust a disappointment?

Nexus 5 had a bad camera. What's really funny is Google had a commercial where a couple run off to the woods in a moonlit night and take pictures in really dark light and the pictures turn out great. Anyone who has owned the N5 know that is not possible. The phone had or has a tagline of "capture moments in epic new ways" or something along those lines. Whatever man...

It's all about perspectives. The Nexus 5 to me was a bigger bang for your buck than any other phone out there. The camera by no means is absolutely crap nor is it the best one out there. What it is though is a good camera; specially when you consider the price tag. It also has many great things going for it like the form factor, the engine under the hood, the display...etc and not to mention the smoothest Android experience money can buy.
For me personally, it was one of my favourite devices matched only by the Butterfly S and now the Moto x.. again for me..

I can still choose whether I get the Nexus S or the Atrix; a friend in the US buys it tomorrow for me. I was done & dusted on getting the Nexus S (coming from an un-rooted Nexus One) until I took a final look on those specs of the Atrix again. That phone just looks too good on paper to not be good!
Guys, more updates please! Help a guy make up his mind..

Apps opening? - Fastest phone I've own yet...
Lag? - yes. Going from an app like Angry birds to home screen, there's an initial lag. It's annoying. Must be Blurrrrr.
Camera? - Disappointed...iPhone 4 is definitely better.
Let's just say I'm ready to install a custom Rom without all the bloatware and lameBlur. Blur kills the phones IMO.
Not many phones can beat the iphone 4 camera appart from Nokia, but is the camera on the Atrix better than the HTC Desire or nexus s.
Cheers.

Go back to the Nexus S boards then rather than trolling here. You clearly don't have the phone, any anything you state is a matter of opinion, and clearly jealousy since you're on our boards and not yours.

Came from Nexus One. Good upgrade.
Confirmed that with proper account provisioning, unlimited 4G data for $30, and the "phone" apn, upload is either capped by AT&T or HSUPA is disabled on the hardware by AT&T. Tethering plan may increase upload speed but I got no confirmation in this yet.
Otherwise it's an excellent upgrade from the N1.

The phone works great, haven't had any lag at all so far. Only been playing on it for 4 hours though! Launcher Pro works great, I have the 3D settings on and the animations don't lag whatsoever. No complaints with the screen. Only thing that sucks is my Worms game isn't working Something about being an unsupported device.
Man I see you trolling on a ton of threads here and as a Nexus S owner myself you really give us a bad name.

Should note that if you look at the reviews out there, the N1 battery life is crap (compared to the Atrix). Also the Atrix (like most newer Android phones) has a proper multitouch screeen. So you'll notice way better typing input immediately.
I will admit.... it's nice that nucentury is at least starting to use SOME punctuation. Not enough, but it's still an improvement from the first post i've seen from him in his other thread.
Besides.... who would even take the advice of someone who thinks that a gyroscope makes a phone that much better than any other device when it comes to gaming? A gyroscope has the same exact flaw as Microsoft Kinect. It's only logical to be used for a certain genre of games. Anything outside those genres, and it's just a useless addition to the phone.
Everything for me is great thus far. Phone is very snappy using LauncherPro also using Beautiful widgets.
Typing is spot on. Nice screen resolution. I would say the phone is overall faster than the Captivate and Inspire.

I have fallen in love with this phone all over again. This is exactly what I wanted. The camera quality hasn't suffered, and Beats is present.
I just switched from iPhone land and I loved the phone with Sense, but it's still awkward and clunky. Much less so than what I had remembered of Sense from years past. I kept hearing about how Jelly Bean was really a big leap for the platform and it really shows with the GPE ROM. I didn't realize how polished Jelly Bean was until tonight. I am now 100% team Google/Android.
I'll never get rid of my MacBook but it's going to take something extraordinary to pry the One out of my hand. These speakers have spoiled me, I don't think I can leave HTC now even though I want a true Nexus device next.
I like how it seems smoother and cleaner. My new daily driver!
Its amazing. Much better than I anticipated. Just make sure to download the aosp browser.

I'm a little annoyed by the fact that aptX is missing now. Other than that, it's much preferred over Sense.

There isn't an option for this on aosp 4.2.2.
You'll have to install a de-odexed version and I am sure there will be plenty of % battery mods to flash very soon if not already.

The camera quality has suffered!!! There is no way on Earth that the quality on the Trickdroid GE Rom is anywhere near as good as stock or ARHD 11.
It made me like my one twice as much

Stock android lovers will obviously love this, whereas I personally miss some sense stuff. For the starters the audio quality is worse, not just in headphones but the loudspeaker is definitely quieter than on sense. I miss the camera interface and Zoe as well as things like focusing on a bright area so it dims the picture and vice versa.
Can't judge battery life since I didn't use it long enough. It's smooth but my One running Viper Rom is really smooth and personally won't trade off some really good features to gain a 0.05 speed increase. It's good that the option is there for stock android lovers though

Kitkat impressions?

Hi VZ Moto X folks,
How are you liking Kitkat on the phone? I installed the update on my VZ Moto X this noon and do like the update overall, but I have a few gripes as well.
Likes:
Transparent status bar, white looks good and different as well IMO
New camera allows to adjust focus, exposure (technically this not related to Kitkat I think)
Wallet is working again on VZ with NFC
Lockscreen music album art is very nice! Also works with apps like Pandora and Tunein Radio
New dialer, but no business search
Gripes:
Lost root from 4.2, chances to get it back on 4.4 seem slim. Really hate ads
Some issues with Chrome on 4.4 (lag etc), hopefully will be fixed by an update to Chrome. Chrome never lagged on the Moto X for me on 4.2.
4.4 broke support for battery apps like BetterBatteryStats and Wakelock detector.
Overall, I am really impressed with Motorola and Verizon for giving us this update so soon. But the Moto X was such an awesome phone to start with that I am not totally overawed by the update, I think. What do you guys think about the update?
I'm pretty upset about a really small thing: When I unlock from Active Notifications, there's a tiny delay in which the regular lockscreen appears, and then it unlocks to home/whatever app I had open. That wasn't there before, was it?

I'm happy with the speed of release, but I'm a little disappointed with the crippling of some features. The lack of local search in the dialer and Google Caller ID is very disappointing.
Oh, and this feels like nitpicking. But holy crap:
If you haven't tried yet, switch to ART runtime in the developer options. It speeds up the phone a lot.

Yes, that to me is a actually one of the most important updates because you feel it every time you unlock or every press (if enabled). Much smoother now.

Yes! The icons are terrible in the status bar. They also used the old Gps icon instead of the new location one.
I like having the option of using art. And will try it for today. But might have to get rid of it until more apps are compatible. Its not horrible but my banking app and PANDORA don't work. The lag is also TERRIBLE when unlocking from active notifications. And disabling slide unlock screen is NOT a fix because the lock screen is how I change my music when listening. I switched as well. Loved the HTC, thought it would hold me over past my normal 4 months. I was wrong, lol. Was and is a great phone. The g2 is better in my opinion. But comes with tradeoffs depending on your likes. Boom sound, miss them, but adjusted quickly, and believe it or not, I actually liked and miss blink feed. But taptu is a cool news app that you can incorporate all news you like. Phones are almost same size but yet. 5 difference in screen size. Screen is phenomenal on this phone, battery, forget it, I get average 25 hrs with 4 hrs plus screen time and plenty of calling, 2 push emails, loads of texts. Hard to kill battery. So basically, I was weary as well, made the change, and am very satisfied with this device.
And another one who switched from the ONE. Only regretting it a little bitregarding to HTC's update Speed but overal I'm happy with the G2.
The package what the G2 offers is pretty good and you can't go wrong as long you don't mind waiting a little bit longer for Updates

This is xda! Who's waiting for updates? Lol
G2=best phone on the market ATM. But I guess it all depends on what makes a phone best to you. G2 has got everything going for it besides the actual feel. I hate this slippery *****.

After 5 warranty returns (purple camera), at&t offered to exchange my One for another device. I chose the G2. I've been using it for the last day now, and am really contemplating on keeping it. It comes with a great amount of useful software features (notification while charging! Tap screen to wake..and more.) Obviously the audio is not as good, but I don't spend a lot of time watching movies or anything on my phone, so I can get over that!
Battery life seems to be incredible thus far.
I am also pretty happy with the camera as well. The colors look sharp. I think people look a little washed out or cartoonist on the screen in indoor lighting , but the stock app does some processing afterwards correct it. I'd like to post some camera shots to compare since I still have my One. It is Thanksgiving tho, so perhaps tomorrow ?
One negative I will bring up is the auto brightness. I don't know if others have this since I'm new to this device, but auto brightness doesn't seem to work very well, so I downloaded Lux from play store and it works great. So it must be LG 's logic

Auto brightness on stock blows. Very slow and wonky. Lux app removed the problem for me. Even on my last 3 lg devices, the auto brightnes was slow and sucked. Expected it.
Here's a couple comparison pics between the G2 and One. First pic is from G2.
Edit.. apparently you can't add more than one pic using the app.. please stand by while I work out the technical difficulties ?

ok here are G2 vs HTC One photos I just took outside (G2 photo is the first photo) No special settings on either app, just opened camera app and point and shoot..
I prefer the G2 pics. You?

[Q] Is LG G2 worth buying?

Hi all,
I'm thinking to buy a new smartphone and im between nexus 5 and lg g2, i saw many issues about the g2 but i just wanted to ask if there are fixed with the last updates for this phone... i love camera and i saw that the camera was better at g2, can someone help me which one to choose?
Thanks.
Which kind of problems did you read about? Tell me so I can help you.
I'm loving this phone but if you're after the latest and greatest then waiting for the s5 will be better for you.

Weigh out the pros and cons. In the end, it really comes down to what you want. I suggest playing with both of them in a best buy store since they have the Nexus 5 in the Google section.

Now i got s4 but i dont like it so much dont know why it doesnt fit me, had nexus 4 before it, now im liking the lg g2, nexus 5 seems to have more issues than the g2.
Some issues that i saw in forum: bad voice call, bad gps, and found this one...: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2472319
Those issues are not widespread from the post you provided. I don't have most of those issues. IMO, G2 is a step up from Nexus 5. Nexus 5 definitely can't compete with the battery of the G2, or the camera. Also, stock Android is overrated if you ask me. Not every single feature of the G2 is useful, but most of them are. The Nexus 5 hardly has anything special about it.

I'll let you gain insight into my experience with this device.
Bad voice calls are not an issue. My voice calls are really loud and clear and I use quite some time doing calls. Gps usually locks within a few seconds if I'm about the same position and even when I'm not, it takes no longer than 10 seconds to lock my position.
Regarding that post : well you read how the solution to all those problems was to get a replacement because it's simply not normal for the g2. I do have the stuttering issue with xda-developers app. I don't know why this occured, it wasn't there from the beginning.
That said, do NOT expect upgrades for the G2. If you choose to buy it, you acknowledge to stay on 4.4 (once we receive it) because LG are really bad with updating their phones. If you intend on flashing custom ROM then it shouldn't bother you. Stock is awesome though and has a lot of features.
My two cents

No, it isn't, yes, it is.
Thanks for the answers and suggestions, still dont know what to do will way a bit...
To me, the LG G2 was worth buying. First phone I chose to go back to stock Rom. After the KitKat update, I'll re-root for sure, but probably stay on stock Rom.
Gosh, I love this phone, it has so many features!

I have had this device for 2 days coming from an HTC one which died
The htc one is a beautiful device with build quality second to none however, my new G2 has excellent build quality too IMO despite many opinions to the contrary. I intended not to root my device (skygo requires an un-rooted device) but yesterday I went ahead and did so for one reason and one reason only - so that I could use GMD auto hide soft keys pro - an app which enables you to utilise the whole of the screen all of the time.
Now I have a beautiful 5.2 inch screen in a device that is the same size as my previous HTC one which only had 4.7 inches of screen estate. I am very, very happy with my new device in comparison to my previous one which, incidently, cleaned up in the best mobile device awards.
Its down to you lol. I was in the same boat as you but went for the G2. Better battery and bigger screen. Hopefully the 4.4 update will bring a better camera. I think nexus 5 camera is better mainly because it focuses much much quicker. Got my G2 for the same price as a nexus 5

G2 is definitly worth of buying.
i had the N5 before my G2, and the G2 is far better. The battery life is about double that of the N5, i get on average 6 hrs screen time per day. Also the rear buttons are amazing!:good::good::good::good::good::good::good::good::good::good::good::good::good:
Edit:........................ :good:

I had my G2 rooted too (even flashed Hellfire Rom). But first step was to restore stock Rom and finally I flashed stock software to unroot and reset my device to be prepared for the official OTA update. After the KitKat update, I'll root again to optimize this awesome phone with Xposed modules and Romtoolbox Pro.
But this is just for fun. Basically, the LG G2 is so full of features out of the box together with great hardware that rooting let alone flashing is nothing you have to do to make the G2 awesome. Because it's awesome by nature...

My brother has the 5 and i have the g2. the funny thing - we both love our phones but we do like each others a little more.
Nexus 5 - P/C's: google created and always up to date, no bloatware, feels a bit better in my hand, [IMO] takes better pictures but the UI leaves many things to be desired, lower battery life. If I had the nexus 5, I'd feel like i would no reason to use a custom ROM, just root and xposed
G2 - P/C's: dat screen size, buttons on the back [if you like that], good battery life, stock bloatware isnt that bad, and the UI as a whole isnt bad, you can get ALMOST the exact feel of the n5 with a kit kat rom [but all the rom related issues ]. I like my g2 but just wish we could get kit kat out officially so I can just root and xposed and i like the blinking button on the top rather than bottom
G2... I love this phone. I have yet to root this thing and I have no complaints. Call quality is great, wifi and 4G perform wonderfully, I noticed that the phone switches between the various modes (4g, 2g, etc) really quickly and I rarely have issues surfing the web. The camera is awesome, the speakerphone is adequate, no buttons on the sides of the phone is awesome, and I prefer the G2 location of the headphone jack at the bottom of the phone. Battery life is insane! I've gone two full days with moderate use (down to 2% before I plugged the phone in), and with heavy use I get at least 28 hours before I see the battery get into the 10-20% range. Finally I can hand my daughter my phone so she can keep herself busy for an hour or so and not worry about having enough juice to make it through the rest of the day.
All of the included apps have added useful features and it seems that they have pulled some of the best/favorite tweaks and made them part of their default app suite. For the first time in quite sometime, I have not felt the need to root or modify the phone, save for that Android soft key bar at the bottom of the screen, I hate that thing. I might root just to run an app that removes it.
I'm not a person that likes to root, i will use it as it is, with stock rom, it's enough to have good call quality, to feel productive with it and have no lag, feeling good in hand, and battery life of course , i'm a designer and i need good camera, and i think it has a great one. thanks all for the comments, i'm going with G2.
