Galaxy S4 sudden died out - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, my Galaxy S4 suddenly died out while I was using it halfway. It was still charging (actually 100% already). The phone blackout and I couldnt turn it on.
Here's what I tried:
1) pull out battery and wait for a while then put it back and power on
Result: nothing happens
2) same as 1) but with another spare battery
Result: nothing happens
3) let it charge (to power socket) and waited for about 15 mins
Results: the top side of the phone was warm (beside the microSD slot) and I still cannot power on.
Is this phone useless already?

Hi mate
Sorry to hear what happen .
Question after you switched to phone on and waited maybe 1-2 min did you try to connect it to the pc, see if the system is alive if you have access to your files.....if so the phone is ok..but maybe the screen is dead or something is loose inside.

I didn't hear any sound or vibration when I switch it on. I have not try connecting to PC but even if I could, the phone has password lock so I still cannot access unless I unlock the phone

The idea is to find out if the problem is the phone or the display , if the pc recognices the phone it means that the phone works...no real need to acces your files
If it does not then your problem is in the electronics and not in the display......just an idea

mate ,
it looks like a hardware problem take it toSamsung if in warranty still or to a local service center...

I had a similar problem in the past and it ended up being my power button was malfunctioning. It was apparently just stuck in an off/on loop but not showing anything on screen....

Look like mainboard short circuit since top side of the phone got warm and also I assumed from op that display never show anything again.

Is there hope of getting back all the data if it can be repaired? Around how much will it cost? My warranty finished about a month ago

If this case, it would be switching off and on all the time? At least showing something on the screen?

Power button stuck

Hi!
I have a QTek S200 that had it's speaker dead and the power button was stuck. The stuck power button means that no matter when or how I pressed it NOTHING HAPPENED but sometimes randomly (when I was nowhere near the button) an "Are you sure you want to shutdown?" dialog appeared like I had the button pressed.
I sent the phone to service and they changed the speaker and told me that the button requires a motherboard change and it costs somewhere around $500. That was obviously too much money so I told them to send it back like that.
My phone arrived and the power button was working perfectly (so far as I know they did nothing about it) for a few months. Then again the power button died and started behaving the same way (this time there was no problem with the speaker).
I'm using a custom ROM but I also tried with the original I backed up after I got the phone, but seems the problem is not in the software. Anyone has any idea what can cause this and if it's possible to fix it?

It's almost certainly hardware. If you feel like opening up your Prophet, you could check whether the power button is connected correctly...
$500 seems way too much given that it's possible to get a device for less than that!

Is the button on the case connected properly? It may be pushing in constantly rather than being where it should be.

The Touch Pro will be good!
You could possibly try removing the power button connections all together, and see if that rectifies the problem... So you wouldn't be able to turn it off, but there is software to do that!

This is a very good idea indeed! I only wonder what about the screen? I can't really remember if you can turn on your screen with the other keys when it's off (I used to open/close my SD card slot to bring the screen to life when I was stuck with the phone)?
You can change the lock settings for keys (so that other keys can wake up the device) in Start->Settings->System (tab) and the "Power" option (I think).

Good luck with that!
one thing i forgot to mention with this was that my batter usage was INSANE when the power button is in "stuck mode".. on idle the phone goes dead in cca 72 hours..
when it first came back with the fixed speaker (and button) the battery issue was gone.. but now the button is stuck again the power issue is back!

[Q] HELP -HD2 Vibrates nonstop when battery inserted

Hi there,
i have search but can't find anything
A friend of mine just gave me HD2 and i was super excited about it.
The phone wasn't used for ages so i plugged it for 10 minutes and while plugged i tried to turn it on.
the phone started to vibrated continiously without displaying anything.
I removed the battery, unplug power, inserted battery again and it just vibrates like nuts
Once out of 5 (roughly) it flashes... the flash and then vibrates... again nonstop
once out of 10 (roughly again) it just doesn't do anything at all.
even when plugged to the power, no led or nothing.
did i get a dead beast ?
I tried, holding buttons, pressing reset button, etc but with no luck...
hope you guys could help me... many thanks in advance
Check the battery pins on the HD2 and make sure that non of them are bent slightly or anything like that. A slightly bent battery pin can cause the HD2 to do some crazy things. If non of the battery pins are bent then you might just have a bad NAND chip and the only fix for that is a new main board.
Nice bike in your avatar pic too by the way.
just checked them all out and they are well aligned and don't seem to have been touch
that sucks
Cheers for my ride i like it too ^^

Dang man that does suck, I hate to tell you, "Yeah it probably needs a new main board.", and then someone else come up with another idea. But I do think that is going to be your fix. i say this cause if it was bricked it would more than likely vibrate one brief burst and that would be it, nothing else. but the steady vibration sounds more like a bad component on the main board. Sorry friend that is my opinion. Maybe I am wrong though.
something new happened this morning
I left the phone without battery all night and put the battery in when i got up.
the screen displayed the following message.
/!\ Software update failed. Please Try again.
I couldn't do anything from that point so i pressed the reset button... (didn't want to remove the battery)
phone went off....
as it wasn't responding to anything... i took the battery out and back in.... and brrrrrrrrrrr ... back to scare one
any ideas ? doesnt smell good ...
PS : sorry for double post, hotel connexion in cyprus does really suck.
speed is bad and unstable... they have 150Mb line for the all island (no joke)

keep the volume down button pressed then swutch on your phone ...if you go into a tri colour screen ..then you might be in some luck ....then you have to go to the official htc site and download a rom update from there ..and flash it ....
i tried but nothing
now it's just dead...
i plug in it so maybe it will charge the battery normally but it doesn't seem to to anything. normally there is a led indicator no ?

Yep it sounds like a bad NAND chip. My guess is it has bad blocks that is keeping it from booting and the steady vibration is being caused by the same. Again just my opinion. I say this because it said, "/!\ Software update failed. Please Try again.", this is common in cases when the NAND went bad.

[Q] Boot loop - cannot access recovery or download mode

Hello, maybe this was posted a lot of times, I just wanna get a second opinion before getting this to the shop. My phone (GT-i9500) suddenly went on to boot loop. I cannot enter download mode nor recovery mode. When attempting to put on download mode, when it tells me to press volume up, nothing happens and it restarts again. I was partially able to boot to recovery but it only showed the TWRP splash page then it reboots again. Does this mean that I have a broken motherboard? Any suggestions?

Did you try to go into recovery with the phone plug in to the charger? how it does behave?

Let us know how it goes
The exact same thing happened to me a few weeks ago. It happened exactly a year after I got my GT-I9500. Around midnight one weekend the phone had quite a bit of charge and was working fine. As I unlocked the screen to check a WhatsApp message, the phone suddenly shut down and entered a bootloop with the same symptoms as yours. I couldn't enter my stock recovery and download mode would only come up for a few seconds and it would re-enter the bootloop. I tried numerous battery pulls and made it loop over quite a bit and then gave up after an hour and left the battery out. Throughout the day I occasionally tried my luck to no avail. Maybe after 48 hours or less - a day without trying my luck included - since the initial incident, I carried it to the shop and as the employee put the battery in the phone I was baffled. The phone booted normally, no issues and has worked perfectly fine since then. She said sometimes our phones need a little rest.
I've also read that our model has had some battery problems like swelling. I noticed no swelling by the way. So my advice, leave the battery out for a day or two. My phone was not rooted at the time and was running stock TouchWiz Android 4.4.2. Good luck!

no life at all. even when its connected to my pc. if i plug the charger in it just gets hot.....thats it.
can i assume its bricked for some odd reason??

i did that + charger,and lead.
no responce and all. if i plug in the charger the top half of the phone gets quite hot in the main board area.
im sure some people come on hear with problems with out telling the full storey ( dropping it down the toilet,or just dropping it) but i literally shut it down to charge it quicker.
im still scratching my head over this.
if all else fails i may look into buying one with a smashed screen on ebay and replace the main board as my phone is in great condition,....gutted.
it does sound like a hardware issue - can you take it back to a samsung service center?

If you tried another working battery, tried connecting to a computer and cant get into Download Mode.... I say your phone is dead and it sounds like a hardware fault. I have seen soft bricked and hard bricked phones, they still show some form of life like the led turning on, pixel salad, black screen (as you can see the screen light up), white screen, cant get into recovery but can get into Download mode and etc.
Sounds like its dead but I am sure its got nothing to do with what you did and its just a coincident that it died.

My A1 "died" and i dont know why

Hello folks.
So I left my A1 charging at night, the alarm woke me up as usual in the morning. Just before leaving home I took it to check the time and then it was already "dead".
PS: The phone was never been knocked over, wet etc...
Symptoms:
- Black screen, as if was turned off / without battery;
- Buttons do not work;
- Doesn't react to any connections.
- Doesn't enters fastboot mod;
- It's not recognized by the computer;
- Also not charging.
Any help is welcome, best regards.
happened to me the other day on AEX, after flashing a kernel, turns out it does switch on but I had to press the power button for quite some time and then it switched off again upon minutes from switching on. I entered the recovery with the same method and installed another kernel, it works fine now

It's a possibility, but it's strange the phone has like 4 months of use, never had any problem.
I'm willing to try some stuff first, even open the phone to unplug and replug the battery on the mb.
Otherwise at my country (Brazil) Xiaomi has no warranty
I had this problem and it was just due to an loose flex cable. Try opening and reattaching them :good:

No problem, just two screws att the bortom and use the nails around the edge. Be careful not to break the plastic frame around the screen, it can be quite weak.

So yesterday a oppened the phone, disatached the flats and atatched then again, unfortunatelly didn't help =[.
We also made some tests and seems like it could be an issue with the battery seems like it's not charging nor receiving any charge.
Seems like the "regulator" of the battery or something like that is not working as it should.
I'm gonna try to test this a in a more acurate way, at least to be sure that it's the battery.

We also made some tests and seems like it could be an issue with the battery seems like it's not charging nor receiving any charge.
Seems like the "regulator" of the battery or something like that is not working as it should.
I'm gonna try to test this a in a more acurate way, at least to be sure that it's the battery.

The phone will power on without any battery attached at all, so remove it and see if you get life. If not, then it's not the battery.

You can try make edl usb cable first, if not work then search mi a1 test point, you'll need to jump 2 point on motherboard with wire/pin.

So yesterday i tryed to make the phone enter at the EDL mode, by jumping the 2 points on the motherboard. Unfortunately the computer didn't recognized the phone at all, i'v tryed several times.
I'm starting to think that something related to the the motherboard just died.
I'll lend it to a tecnical that can fix it or at least confirm the death of the phone to me.

Just tested it yesterday, without success.
Even with the battery disconnected and ubs at computer or charger, the phone still not giving any signal of life.
Does it mean that it must be a serious problem?

Hello mate.
I'm sry for you phone, at my case i'm starting to believe that the mb/cpu died.
I was thinking that it could be the board at the bottom (ubs, mic jac) but i have been told that it's really rare this to happen.
Yesterday i tested the battery and it's fully charged, (so the battery isn't the problem)
I'm weeling to take it at the end of the week into a tec who can test all the hardware stuff in order to know what actually have failed.
Have u also tryed to engage ur phone at EDL Mode?

Hi.
Yep also tried shorting the test points, it does not respond to anything. Just totally dead.
Its sad cause i really loved that phone. I might buy a used cheap one with a broken screen and use its main board or other parts.
Thanks Knievel
