[Q] SGS4 Problem - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

OK, Firstly let me apologise for the length of this post.
Since mid July 2014 I have been having problems with my phone, at first it kept overheating to a point where it just wasn't comfortable in my pocket and only a reboot would calm/cool things down. This was annoying but I could deal with it. I read somewhere that this could be a battery issue so I bought a new battery. This solved it for like a day but then the problem came back.
In September the overheating stopped but has now been replaced with random switch off and signal loss.
So I decided to factory reset/flash stock firmware (or at least as stock as I can get it as I can't find 4.4.2 that hasn't been molested by 3UK) thinking that as this would take the phone to permanent safe mode effectively, but the random power offs continue. The signal loss has been corrected by only connecting to WCDMA only instead of giving the phone a choice, it still cuts out now and again but it isn't nearly as bad as before. The random power problem can be anytime, I can be just on chrome and *poof* gone, in the middle of a YT video and *poof* gone, this can also happen if the phone is on charge.
What strikes me as odd is this, sometimes I leave my videos that I have stored on SD playing all night and not once have I woken up to a black screen, and this is while on charge. The two batteries aren't part of the "bad batch" of batteries as they both have serial numbers that begin with LC.
Any Ideas short of going back to Samsung? As I can't remember where I put my proof of purchase.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks you guys.

Hi mate,
First thing you have to do is find out who is the culprit , who is keeping your phone awake and running all the time , use an app like:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179809
Let it run for a few hours and check the logs...then we can start to figure out what is going on

Endless Reboot Cycle

I've had the DInc since day -1 and haven't had a real problem until recently. Whenever the phone gets a little warm from 10+ minutes of straight use, the phone will reboot itself and goes into a reboot cycle. What seems to happen is the phone will overheat from use and then heat up some more from booting up. Once it gets to the home screen, it'll reboot again in an endless cycle. The cycle cannot be stopped unless the battery is pulled or the down key is held prior to it rebooting and shutting it down in the bootloader. The reboots are pretty predictable just by feeling the temperature of the phone. Using the phone while charging is a definite no-no for me. The only way I can get the phone to function again is to either let it sit for 10 minutes or put it in front of the AC for 5.
My phone was rooted and all roms seem to have the same effect. I've tried all hydra's kernels and all of them causes the problem, even the stock kernel. The only temporary fix was to use setcpu and enable the temp profile to lower the cpu to 500MHz at 36 degrees. This gave me extended use and was bearable but I really shouldn't have to do this. I've got so annoyed and reverted back to full stock/unrooted by downgrading with the official rom but the phone is STILL rebooting from overheating.
This is an obvious problem and I've already called Verizon for an RMA. I just hope it's not a widespread defect. It seems random reboots are pretty common with the DInc based on what I've read and other people's experience at work. There's about 5 of us who has the Inc at my job and all of our phones rebooted about a few minute from one another.
Has anyone had this issue? If so, did your replacement take care of it? I've read stories of people having to go thru four exchanges to finally land on a good device. How hot does your phones get from use and has it ever rebooted from the heat? It's a real bummer to be unable to play games on my phone for extended periods of time. The Droid X is looking mighty tempting right now
Same issue here
I've had the Incredible since day 1 (I actually upgraded from the original Droid, which I loved, but I wanted the faster CPU and more memory) and within the first 2 weeks, I got the random reboot issue, but it wasn't consistent and I believe that an OTA update fixed the problem (which was a general reception issue for the Triad area of NC).
However, the last couple of weeks, the phone seems possessed and reboots randomly and will keep rebooting until I pull the battery. It doesn't matter if I'm using the GPS, surfing the web, sending a text message, etc. or if I'm using the Verizon 3G network or my home Wi-Fi.
I tried testing various scenarios, soft/hard resets, removing my micro-SD card, charging the battery overnight, etc., but when the phone gets into one of its random reboot loops/cycles, there is no remedy but to pull the battery for about 5-10 minutes.
I have taken the phone 3 times to a retail Verizon store (that has a technician onsite) and they can't fix the phone (just keep doing factory "hard" resets).
I called HTC and they just told me how to hold the phone "with your fingertips and by the edges of the phone), and if I still had issues, I could ship the phone to them and they could attempt to repair it (but, then I'm without a phone for several days/weeks, which is not acceptable).
I have also called Verizon support and they finally agreed to issue me a replacement "refurb" phone (which I think is totally BS), but if I have the same issue with this replacement phone, I'm thinking of seeking legal counsel to get out of my contract and/or start a class action lawsuit against Verizon and/or HTC.
I've been a Verizon wireless customer for over 12 years with no issues with their "network", so I know it's an issue with this phone.
If the root cause is heat buildup, then to me, this would be considered a factory defect and all Incredible phones should be recalled (or the customer given the option to swapout to another phone, like the Droid X).
Besides the reboot problem, the phone has poor battery life (even more so than other smartphones), poor call quality, and poor reception.
Me Too
I have the random reboot issue as well, although I am 99.999999% it is due to heat. That said, heat could be caused by it trying desperately to secure a decent signal.
I really do not want to try to convince Verizon I have this problem, and have just been living with it.
Ive havent had that problem, but my inc overheats to 50°c sometimes. My advise, go to big red and have it replaced.

no, usually happens after it just booted while doing a random action
Probably time to back up your apps and wipe things out. Also, defrag your SD card because a few times mine became amazingly fragmented.
You could back track and try figuring out what app or what change had caused this but for the same amount of effort you can start fresh. I routinely wipe things out. I do it partially because if you only do a few reformats every now and again it becomes a daunting, intimidating task where you fear losing important info, etc.. just my two cents.
Mine is doing it too, while I have almost no extra applications installed and I don't use timescape and very rarely mediascape.
Just laying on my desk when suddenly the display lights up and the phone says simcard locked (asking for my pincode).
Happens approx. once every 1-2 days, and sometimes a short time after I reboot.
I never noticed it in the almost 6 months I have this phone, until I plugged in a new simcard with the pincode request active

Reseating the SIM and SD card can definitely help too. But I've personally used the same SIM cards for years without challenges on the network or with my phones. Sometimes you get a dud or some dust in there.
I like using Hot Reboot to reboot my phone from time to time as well. I don't do it too often because I like to see how long my battery lasts, but it helps out a ton. Much better than killing tasks. I only do that before putting my phone to sleep for a long time, just in case some stray apps don't close or trick WiFi into staying on, etc.
My phone seems to be rebooting much more when I plug in to charge (while on the phone or having the earphones plugged in) . . . Its really annoying. Last night just trying to talk to my girlfriend it rebooted about.. 7 times? Less than 30 minutes. That is very frustrating. . I'll go home later and try to defrag the card and maybe the sim and such. I'll see what happens.. if it keeps up I might just have to go back to the storm1 until 2.1 comes out. Hopefully that'll fix this rebooting problem..

same here, its a perfect phone i and i dnt mind anything in it but the reboot problem, cuz i already have a couple of deals lined up to sell it and if the prob isnt fixed any time soon im gonna take the plunge and sell it
it is a hardware failure. If you smell the back (behind the cover) u smell something burning. it will hapen more often and than you have to take it to a repair center where they can fix it under warrenty. They are repairing mine right now.....
I have same issue in HK & got replace mainboard but still got error restart.
Finally they change a new X10i to me beside they need me keep my old back cover!
My friend has got the same issue and the phone was sent back with the same problem again. In return we sent it back again to sony and we received a new phone
I wonder if the restarting could be related to wifi,
I didn't enable the wifi for about 2 weeks now and it didn't reboot once.
Just leaving 3g network on for the moment.
get your x10 replaced with its motherboard. i had to threaten legal action just to get the restart loop fixed.
its a very common problem with a faulty batch or with the phone itself. you can check all the complaints here

m8 i had exactly the same problem first the restart was just randomly and then the START became random i mean when i boot my phone it restarted itself over and over again so i turn it off and leave it to rest then when i switch it on again i was able to use it about 30 min and then the restarting session comes back again and i wasnt even able to log in to Android OS . The device just reached Sonny Ericsson logo and restart .SO i gave it back to the shop i bought it from and after few days they gave me new one coz it was some hardware issue they couldnt fix that was the only way to repair it for me.
P.s. 1st i bought black xperia but they gave me white cant be more happy coz i wanted white when i first went to the shop but they ware all sold ..
I think it happens when the phone gets too hot. check the back of your phone and feel it it is overly warm, I know my phone has rebooted sometimes when I have been doing cpu intensive tasks and multitasking or using the gps for a while. This happened with my g1 as well.
Are you using a Task Killer? If so, do NOT kill the Backup and Restore application on the phone and see if that resolves your problem.
I know it sounds strange, but I was having a similar issue where my phone would randonly restarted. It only started to happen after I did a firmware upgrade that installed the Backup and Restore feature (I'm on Rogers). Once I stopped killing the app, my problems stopped.
For mine it was GPS. Disabling GPS stops rebooting the phone.
bad chipset... return to se.
Before I tried all the other MODs, especially Froyo ROMs, everything works fine.
After trying and flashing and downloading and ... my GPS will now work for nearly 30 mins or equal to kilometers driven and then reboots or GPS signal lost
It needs to cool down or the timeframe will be shorter just after the reboot. To turn GPS on/off will not work.
I tried everything in any possible combination:with and without backcover; car charger; Navigon, MAPs; reflashed back to 2.1 Stock; formatting SDCard; changed SDCard - problem remains
I wouldn't say that it's the cover will be hot..yes warm, but that's all.
My problem is, that there is a little crack on the touchscreen on the upper left side, so I guess SE will not replace my generic full-paid handset.
I still have this problem lately, and it is right out of warranty, so i am stuck with this phone.
I check with robbers (rogers) if i can get another phone cheaper... heck they are selling me old smart phones more expensive then the market.
I think i am through with Sony ericsson, phone is nice but their choice of manufacturers are horrible.
Seriously, Sony deserve to be hacked and deserve to lose billions.

battery getting hot and phone rebooting.

this is reeeealy starting to piss me off...
a little background: my first evo was random rebooting. i had to wait so long that it couldnt even turn on successfully without rebooting for a refurb. i get the refurb, and after a week realize the panel is screwed. i dont do much about it, and just deal. of course, with the refurbs, you need to keep the same battery, which is bad for me because mine had spend an entire day out of the phone in my pocket on a very hot (90 f) day.
so i install sbc and stuff, uninstall it when all the warnings and scares start coming. and all of the sudden, my phone starts rebooting again. it usually happnes when i am playing games, but sometimes when the phone is charging, it will reboot if i open an app. not good. again, i cant just rush to the sprint store cuz its not like i can drive myself, so...
anybody have any tips for a temporary (or maybe even permanent) fix for random reboots? my first step will be a battery replace...
thanks
dk
Are all the radios up to date?
yep. thanks for the reply. radios up, pri, prl, profile, hboot, caulkins newest, etc etc etc.
i'm pretty sure its a hardware problem. now any way to fix or at least make it less bad?
I have exact same issue. I am on my 4th replacement. After 2 other refurb's,( one was out of the box dead), I finally got a new one from the store. I got rid of what I found to be a faulty seidio charger. But, it just happened again...so...gettting rid of any third party chargers....

Phone getting less reliable with time - Just me?

Just a general question, but as time goes on and more updates / firmwares are released is anyone else finding their phone becoming more and more un-usable?
When I first had mine back in November last year it was perfect... no problems at all.
It's slowly got worse and worse to the point where I now have the following problems...
1) Data connection randomly drops needing a soft-reset. (yesterday I had to reset my phone around 5 times - stupidly annoying)
2) In dark condtions photos randomly turn out with coloured horizontal lines across them
3) Battery meter messes itself up after a soft-reset (combined with the need to keep resetting my phone due to the data connection this is massively annoying)
4) My bluetooth used to work fine - Now it will only work reliably if WiFi is turned off.
5) Volume is stupidly quiet now when playing music through an Aux Input.
6) After a soft-reset sometimes the phone just hangs with a black screen showing the battery meter - battery pull then required.
This is just off the top of my head at the moment. I never used to have problems like this. It seems every time I get an updated firmware I get new problems.
I've tried a hard-reset and this hasn't helped.
I love the WP7 software but this phone is beginning to drive me mad, such a shame since hardware wise it is great. I know i'm not alone with feeling Samsung have an ability to mess up the software side of things. Sadly I guess this means I'll look to Nokia next year when I can upgrade.
It's not just you. I wish more people complained to Samsung though, so that maybe we could see some improvement.
Not very helpful but no problems with mine on Orange UK.

Nah, It's good to know there are some of us out there with functioning models
Also nice to know you're on Orange UK as i've been offered a warranty replacement for this data connection issue I hadn't yet taken up as i believe it to be software related.
If you're running the latest release of the OS then it may be worth giving it a go.

This NEVER worked. It's bloody pathetic.
Oooh it's like a game. I had a new problem yesterday. Related to my battery meter woes.
Phone had at least 60% charge, it started to think it had none so wouldn't boot up. Just got stuck in a loop of boot up - instantly power off.
I also had problems with WiFi after mango update but after soft reset everything is working fine except sometimes I can`t connect to an open WiFi network.
Anyone noticed the same problem?

Same for me on this one. I'm on my second Omnia 7, which is about to get sent away to be told it's not fixable and be replaced so I'll be on my third phone
Going to get rid of it as soon as possible and get a Lumia 800.
same here...
Im with T-Mobile UK and i have found the same issue...never thought about it until I read your post though.
I too am finding myself resetting my phone more and more often...also another thing I have found is that it doesn't recognise when to switch to WiFi sometimes instead of 3G...i.e. when 3G is non-existent...very annoying I have to go and turn off the data connection to get it work properly...
i've just made some volume changes and I think it has helped with the headphones although it still isn't great...
I however am scared to return the phone as I dropped it in water and got it out very quickly...so it may have triggered the water seal thingy
Im not due an upgrade until Oct 2012....so I might have to just wait it out :s
I'm having trouble too with a 3 Mobile UK, unbranded latest firmware Omnia7.
Little bit temperamental on rare occasions. Like Freypal data doesn't always want to connect and sometimes it is randomly freezing or only showing the topbar with the battery. Need to pull out the battery to sort it.
On a side note, not connecting to WiFi when in a locked state is really annoying. Have to manually check for emails, WhatsApp etc.
No problems at all for me, only problem i have is Podcaast Pro app is likly to craash now and then, but its the devs fault.
Im having a unlocked, German Omnia 7, 16GB version, flashed to the only local ROM in Sweden from 3 and used with the same operator, and its been great ever since. My problem nowadays is i drop my phone often so when the battery falls out i have to restart, coming from 2-3 Omnia 7 its a lovly life to have it functioning normal, great phone.
Well, im a happy camper, but i noticed Omnia 7 generally working worse over time, mostly the first month is the time frame to discover problems, and if you flash a new rom, this can be the case again, one new month before you feel like tearing our hair, and it´s only connectivity issuess. Changing carrier and ROM fixed everything for me, so no matter how great, the carrier do matter in the choise of a Omnia 7, even if you think you fixed it. Dont know if it appy to you guys, but another Omnia 7 working incridble great here. Glossnas update and all, and it cant be found anymore so...im happy, hope you guys get to be that also.
I'm now on my second Omnia after a warranty replacement for the data connection problem.
New phone -
1) It still loses the data connection, although much less frequently than before.
2) Dark photos i think are now working properly
3) Battery meter still messes up. Must be a fault with the battery itself.
4) Touch wood - Bluetooth now seems ok ...
5) Haven't tried auxiliary volume yet
6) Haven't had a problem with it just displaying the status bar after a soft reset, however if the battery is out for any period of time and i boot the phone up. On the first boot data won't work. I need to soft reset it once for it to initiate.
So in summary - New phone, some old problems fixed. Some new ones. Some the same.

How does Huawei test for bad RAM/eMMC?

I've always had a problem with very random reboots and my warranty expires at the end of July, so I called them to start the RMA process. I don't (believe) I have a battery issue as I have great battery life, and my phone doesn't turn off randomly. Has nothing to do with heat because I could be driving with my phone on GPS for 8 hours, and no issues.
It's so random; sometimes it wouldn't happen for a week, sometimes it would happen twice a day, that's how random it was. I did a clean factory image flash from google's developer site, and it did not help. At this point I know it's hardware related. It doesn't bother me a whole lot, however if I go to sell my phone, I don't want the next person to be like WTF a month later.
Out of curiosity, do they even have a way to test? I hope I don't get it back un-fixed...
