Z2 camera scratches easily - Xperia Z2 General

I have my Z2 so 2months and I'm beggining to see some scratches on the rear camera in direct light. There are no problems in making pictures tho. I'm really careful with my device too.
FIX:

Put a tiny drop of water on the lens and gently rub the corner of a credit card onto the lens. I had the same issue with my HTC One M8 lens and performed the same method and its crystal clear now.
PS: Don't rub hard or you break the lens glass.

I've got them too, mine is 2 months old.

6 months old and did not have a single scratch. That is anti ultraviolet coating. Wipe it out and everything is fine.

Its been there for an purpose. No hard feelings, but when its gone i doubt everything will be like it was there when its wiped out. I have the same issue and rly don't know how did that happened when i bought a back screen protector + case the same day.. I hope your words are true tho and this wont affect the lense. Havent noticed difference in the pictures in daylight tho.

Some people use toothpaste and it works good but..
Like someone said earlier it's there for a purpose. It's the anti-reflective coating and when you will rub it off the quality of photos will deteriorate in direct light, no question about that. It won't be that much visible but you should know about that before you do it, not after.

Any way sony could fix that for us? Or someone tried to give his Z2 to sony centre and get an replacement camera glass? (btw the picture u gave is zoomed only not taken with/without ar coating. And about cleaning it..im too afraid that i could scratch the glass itself.
Just read abit for that problem. It occurs to every phone with AR coating camera glass and the problem is that the lens is exposed to excessive amount of sun light of heat, the AR coating will start cracking itself cos of the hight temperature.Lots of users reproted that the AR coating started to flake off and their pictures began to get blurry.Cleaning the lense glass with alcohol will do the job and bring the sharpness to your pictures, but will affect the light influence in the pics. I will personaly try giving my phone for repair/replacement.

Sony doesn't want to repair this (they say it's a user fault - bad usage of phone) just like HTC (One M8 have a much bigger issue with this coating on One M8).
To repair this you need to replace back panel, lens cover is integrated.

That's not entirely true. Every good camera lenses have this coating. After long usage it may start to flake if it's poor quality. Another reason may be bad treating with chemicals.
In smartphone department quality of this coating is not as good (in most cases whole smartphone is cheaper than proper camera lenses). When there is some problem at manufacturing stage (like in One M8) or just very poor quality control (Z, Z1, Z2, compacts all have this problem) we see that this coating starts to flake very early. Sony and HTC should repair this, but they can say that you used chemicals cleaning your phone and destroyed it yourself and you can't do much about it.
Heat from excessive amount of sun light can be a reason too, but mostly in sunglasses left in direct sunlight for too long. In camera lenses (standalone or smartphone) destroyed coating is a result of bad manufacturing and bad usage, MOSTLY - not always of course.

I guess the only thing i can do is to wipe it off and deal with it than.No guarantee that if i get an replacement (which wont happen) the ar coaing wont flake off again. :silly: Strange is that i have an ZR as well - dived in salt water and stuff with it and the coating its perfectly fine..

I had the exact issue on my Z tho.

Ok.Just to share with you guys.Ive removed the AR coating (or what was left of it) and the glass is crystal clear now , as the pictures i made from now on.They are sharp without distorsion and noise or blury. It helped me alot. The only disatvantage is that if direct sunlight fell on an object that you want to snap.It will get abit blurry, shiny. But there is a fix for that too.If you want to focus that object, just zoom abit, step closer to it,or fix the exposure of the picture before taking it.These things will do the job perfectly.Cheers.

I used a dab of toothpaste and a cotton swab. Took the scratched and blurry coating off without damaging the camera lens. Rinse afterward. I would advise against using any harsh chemicals.

Sony does repair it! Got my back panel replaced with a new one, got my phone today only, it's as good as new!
I had the same problem, took it to the service centre, they submitted it and gave back an almost new (with back panel replaced) phone in just 6 days. So please don't reach any conclusion before you try the proper way.
Thanks.

In Poland Sony doesn't repair it and it didn't repair in Z or Z1 as well. In most cases at forums people have problems with warranty repair this too so maybe you are the chosen one?

Had the same thing & had some kind of stains that i think were caused by water, even ruined the quality in daylight :\ fixed it by rubbing shampoo on the lens "sounds silly but it actually worked "

The same for me and maybe worse.. BUT THEY DISAPPEARED AFTER FEW MONTHS LATER!!

[GUIDE] How to replace a scratched camera

So not that long after getting a SGS2 at launch I managed to get the camera lens scratched. Pictures became fuzzy and useless. I guess some dirt got caught between my desk and the lens and upon nudging my phone the scratch appeared. I have since received follow up scratches further compounding the issue.

So ladies and gentlemen, as I could not find much help on the subject, I present a quick guide to fixing said problem.
Polish - didn't work. I then discovered that the camera is covered by a protective screen which is integrated with the case. So... flea-bay, a Hong Kong distributor of replacement Samsung Galaxy S2 Housings and ten quid later I am presented with a new case.
1. Clear some space and give it a wipe down, don't want any more scratches eh?
2. Prepare your new back plate by cutting up a screen-protector and putting it over the camera lens. I'm going to redo mine at some point, but it will do for now:
3. Turn off and remove the usual gubbins from your phone (battery, sim, sd)
4. Using a precision cross-head screwdriver, unscrew the five screws on the rear of the phone. Use a small magnet to lift them from their resting position and put them somewhere safe (preferably in a layout you remember for their return trip).
5. The tricky bit is always separating the case. Do not be tempted to ram a screw driver down the side and twist, this will just mess up the case. I just used my finger nails and worked it free.
The top is the least resistive and easiest to get your nail in. Work the top loose and then work down each side a bit at a time. You can use your new case as a guide for where the clips are. Be careful not to snap the clips at the bottom of the phone. I was pleasantly surprised that I didn't break anything, and if I can do it, anybody can.
6. You'll notice a couple of things different - strangely, I had an extra electrical connector at the top of my phone, no adverse effects yet.
The speaker system (and probably some other stuff) is embedded in the lower part of the phone.
A precision flat-head screwdriver gently levered on the left will unclip the left side. For the right side pop your screwdriver in from the other side where the battery cover clips into. The speaker part should just pop out.
Mine came out sans-grille. This isn't glued onto the case, so should just lift off, place back onto the speaker component before inserting into your new device.
7. Remove the protective sticker from the inside of the lens screen.
8. Pop the new back onto your phone, starting at the bottom and working your way up the sides evenly.
11. Replace screws, don't over tighten as you may break the plastic threads. Screw lightly anti-clockwise first and you'll feel the thread line up, this reduces the chances of you getting your thread crossed and wrecking it.
10. Remove the button support stickers and other protective coverings
11. Reinstall your gubbins and power up!
12. Snap away
Hope this helps.

A great guide, maybe I'll use it one day. The only thing i find strange is that i even have a slightly bigger scratch along the lens protection, yet my pictures still look good...
If you look closely at the first image you'll see faint scratches over the centre of the lens. The big one on the edge I don't think has an impact. It took me ages of peering in bright sunlight to spot them.

Sorry to bump this. This thread is interesting as, upon the first day I got this phone I realized that the place the camera is in seems to be an easy target for scratches. I mean, the camera and flash glasses are ridiculously exposed and when you put the phone on any surface it is actually laying directly over them. So, I was wondering, is there any way to protect the camera? I guess a screen protector would ruin picture quality, right?
i wld agree that yes, even with just resting the phone on table with time YOU WILL get some minor scratches.
Dident compromize my camera quality (yet) but i was affraid in time it will.
So i did what OP did-with screen protector i had spare.
I was not in a need to replace anything so i just cut small cube-shape of protector (thin, dare i say cheap one will work best, not some fancy, thick or reflective protector)
and then i just sticked it well outside the camera lens and put case back on. You cannot see it tbh and no picture quality decrease
So I cut square protective folie and put it on the camera glass... but what about glue which comes with protector folie? There are un-glue protectors but I am not sure the will snap to such small area at all....
Really pictures quality didn't decrease?
not at all.
although,my protector was sticky by itself i quess i wld suggest you do the same

great tutorial it should be sticky !!
I just got mine today and will do this swap later today! Checked the case out looks good, looked at the camera lens area and found scratches! Bugged me out that! Turns out there is a plastic covering over it
I got a black s2 which I've polished the chrome bezel off, to make it black and scrubbed the whole back casing to give it that matte finish, I ordered for a white one now to give it that contrasting 'Oreo cookie' look :silly:
Will post pics when done, wish me luck and pray I don't break anything!
UPDATE:
Well I managed to sucessfully do the swap and I must say this device looks killer this way! I am in love with it! The grip seems to have suffered a bit and t (Glossy vs textured) there were some difference between the original and the one I got (a cheap one but fits perfect with good finish) but nothing seems any different function wise.
Sorry for the horrible quality pics as I only had my Nexus 7 with me (Clicking pics with the ffc is a pain) I'll try to get high res images if anyone wants to see...

Well, I dunno about 2011.. But by 2017 the little rubber band around the speaker was basically fused with that placed on the plastic frame.
In the end anyway, it was just about leveraging a bit more with the screwdriver on the bottom left corner of the thing.
Funnily, I discovered just afterwards that if camera is everything you care about there are alternatives.

[DIY][Tutorial] Get rid of the Led bleed on your photos !

Im dissapointed that Sony didnt pay atention on building up the Z1 Compact and put a plastic cover in the back and not a glass one, witch might have saved the Z1C of having a annoying flashlight bleed. I cant believe Sony didnt notice this, and the bad part is, that i dont think at all that they will have a solution with a sw update since they dont even have knowledge on this problem and said its the users fault
You can learn more about the bleed here: http://www.inside-handy.de/news/305...itz-bug-bei-farbigen-modellen-noch-deutlicher
Problem: the z1c has a problem with flash bleeding under certain circumstance; If you set your Z1C on superior auto, with led flash on you will probably have a led bleed picture IF you're taking the photo at night, specially on long distance objects but also on near objects. For a very close picture or macro, I dont have bleed at all, so dont judge if you have the bleed by taking just one or two pictures...
Cause: The light of the Led pass through the plastic cover until it reaches the sensor. this is also caused by the depth difference between the sensor and the plastic cover back. i had the same issue using a bumper in my LG Optimus 4x hd, and i fixed it the same way.
Solution: Buy youself a "undeletable black pen". Those pen that you use for writing on a CD and doesnt vanished. You can find it everywhere.
Now you have to be carefull, and paint the part that causes the interference on the sensor, like the picture wich is atached here:
Try to paint that little elevation of the plastic cover just above the chrome ring.
Ok thats it.
Dont worry if you have painted the chrome ring a little bit. Those "undeletable pen" arent exactly undeletable. you can erease it with alcoohol anytime, but it wont go out only by brushing it with your hand or water wich is exactly what we want. I also painted a little of the cromed ring and i vanished it with a toothpick with little alcohol.
In fact, if you dont like the modification, you can erease everything with a piece of cloth and little alcohol... not a big deal.
Ps: may worked for the colored Z1c too, but you will have to live with a small black scratch near the lense.
The pic atached (left) is my Z1c after I made the fix, and you can see its all fine and not note that i made a black track with the pen.
Also, if Sony manages to fix it with a software update, you can easyli ereased it back, but dont expect that...
Veredict: The Z1c still makes bad night pictures with noise, but at least the bleed is removed with the fix, because the light will be blocked by the black paint from reaching the sensor. The pics will even look better, with correct colors and looking more natural.
Samples: The first pic is in darkness with the only light beeing from the street and from those apartments.
The second pic is in my living room with absolutely no light and complete dark.
You can clearly see the light bleed on the lower part of the first two pics that doesnt have the fix.
You can clearly see that there is no more light bleed after the fix.
Those below are without the bleed fix. (superior auto + led on)

Now the same with the fix I made , and same camera settings:
I did this like 4 days ago... Although not the same as yours hahaha! I covered the whole sides of the camera with a dirty toy clay and so far no bleeds! Hahaha
Yeah BTW
for black phones I recommend a black pen like the thread starter did.
for white phones I recommend a white out
for pink and lime I recommend toy clays. They have pink and lime colors and enough to block the bleed that matches the case color. And of course very easy to remove.

Anyways I tried something new just now... I removed the clay and colored the silver lining with a black pen. Now it's dark silver colored and guess what. The light bleed is non existent also. I am assuming that when the LED flashes the back case glow and some of the diffused light bounces on the silver lining of the lens and amplifying it to the glass which causes the bleed.
Verry nice solution and it's almost invisible, tnx for sharing

Does this mean that removing the ASF (the plastic protector) from the back should prevent the bleeding? Because it is the side of the ASF that you apply the paint on, right?
Yeah,it would fix bleeding problem or maybe someone will make rubber cover that covers the flashpoint part and viola-problem fixed

Excellent fix! Have you posted that this issue can be fixed very easily on Sony's forums? Since it is a simple design fault with the back cover, we should surely be within our rights to demand a replacement back cover under warranty? I think many of us should get together and pressurise them to offer such replacements, as I don't want to take a pen to my brand new phone just yet!

yeah, I also didnt want to take a pen to my new device, but see in the pic, that there is absolutely no aesthetic modification. If you could compare mine, to yours, you would see absolutely any diference.
if sony is smart, they would change the plastic cover to a more slimmer one, by doing that, the bleed will not pass to this little elevation it has till the sensor, in other word, there would be no more depth difference from the round sensor and the back plastic cover.
yeah, i also gave the tip to the sony forum.

Well, mine is white so not so sure about that
On a slimmer cover, you probably want a difference in depth to prevent the lens from being scratched when the phone is set down. No?
Sony have also made replacements in the past for other issues on other phones such as a popping noise in Xperia (mini) Pro video recording so don't see why there wouldn't be an official fix for this too.

Yeah, may be you can try with a white pen, but i dont know if such thing exist =/
Usually, the lens are from mineral cristal or saphire. I pretty sure our is also scratch proof. There could be a deph difference but not so high like sonny did.
May be sonny could fix this issue with a newer back cover on the production line, but i doubt they will replace those who already have this issur.
They could make an software uodate that could may be correct this bleed by having a special algorithm correcting the light balance from the botom of the pics, still I think that is very very hard to do, because of the difficulties of producing the bleed only on some ocasions.
I wouldnt expect a software fix at all from sony. They already said its user fault, too.

Except this thread is evidence that it's a hardware issue. As I've said, they've fixed minor hardware issues in the past for those who wanted it. A bit of plastic on the back isn't exactly going to be the most expensive of parts either.

Water droplets under camera lens

Here we go again.. I just sent out an email to Sony Singapore about how water droplets suddenly appeared under my camera lens and LED flash, and I can already guess they'll accuse me of not closing my flaps and how its all my fault..etc even though its obvious enough (due to the fact my SIM, USB port, and sdcard are perfectly working) and the whole phone works fine other wise.
So instead of having to bring it all the way down to Sony only to leave with a bad experience because they'll probably insist it was my fault instead of acknowledging a factory defect or flaw in their design, are there any possible solutions to rid of the water? I just tried the 4K video recording while opening the flaps and letting the phone heat up. While the phone does get extremely hot the water underneath doesnt seem to get any lesser the least bit.
Tonight I'm gonna try leaving all flaps open overnight in my air conditioned room where its dry and hopefully see improvements. If not, for all your victims out there, how long does it take for the water under the lens to completely dry up? And what the odds of it happening again?

I talked to guys in my region that sent their Z2 for warranty repair with similar problems and Sony replaced (or repaired) their devices under warranty without any problems.

Lucky them. Perhaps it even depends on the specific store/service center you go to. I've heard countless people saying how Sony kept insisting they never ensured the flaps were closed, or how such "water damage" is not covered by warranty and therefore will not be entertained unless they are willing to pay for repairs. This usually results in frustration of the customers because there's really no way to prove to Sony that the flaps were closed in the first place. Bottomline: Sony's customer service sucks.
I'll wait for their reply and see how it all plays out. To be honest I'll be quite surprised if they agree to repair or replace my device just like that without much trouble.

Yes, I totally agree. But I'd insist Sony repair my device for free, you're legit after all. You could try to send the device for a water leakage test, Sony claimed to do it for free per users request.

Thats good, so my only worrying part is will they find anything wrong during the leakage test. If they dont, then im screwed. Because for the most part, the entire phone including the camera is working perfectly normal, in fact I didnt even know I had water under the lens until i happened to look at it. Thats why my guesses are the leakage came from the lens not being a perfect seal on the body, and that has nothing to do with the flaps. If sony's leakage test also includes the sealant of the lens and flash then I should be safe.

Yes, I'm sure they test the whole device under water.
Theres a small colored paper inside our Z2 that determines if the phone came from water damage. That small sheet changes color if its really a water damage.
Sent from my D6503 via Tapatalk Pro
Day 2 and im happy to report the LED flash water has dried up overnight, but the lens has quite a lot more by the time I woke up this morning. Its now night and about half of the droplets behind the lens has already disappeared. I just left my flaps open and elevated the phone in such a way where by the camera portion has enough breathing room. Looks like I wont have to go back to Sony.
Anyway, this was the reply I got from them this morning in case anyone was wondering. Kind of expected this sort of response.

had the same Problem with my Xperia Z! it went away after a while.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z/help/camera-waterdamaged-t2598648
Water damage due to user error is not covered under warranty, however water leakage with flaps closed is. They will test the device in lab and it will be replaced under warranty if it's not sealed properly.
I've repaired my Xperia Z in Bishan before for same problem. Go over and talk to them. They will do a test and determine the cause of it.
Its dried up completely, pictures all came out ok. No need to go down to Sony anymore, phew!
told ya
glad it worked out!
I have experienced the same problem and my Z2 is not fully dry yet! I'm sure I've closed everything before putting it in cold water while it was so hot outside, at first when I saw the water drops inside camera I thought it was a problem! I left it open overnight too and I've got the same result! The water was still there! In fact, this is caused by the air inside the phone as Air contains water. When air or water around the phone containing cold substance, comes in contact with the phone, it gets condense and this is forming water droplets on it.
Yeah... it takes 1-3 days to fully dry.
Putting it in a bowle of dry rice might help.

You know that girls use hair dryer to dry their hairs. You can also use hair dryer. Just blow hair dryer on the camera and in moments moisture inside camera will disappear. You must take care not to blow dryer for too long. I hope this will solve your problem, as it solves mine.
Don't use hairdryer and stuff.. It will only affect more to your device. Put it in a bag of rice, submerge the phone with all your flaps open. Don't put it too under, just the surface. Do this for atleast 2-3 days. Or just in the night when you sleep. It will suck all the moisture and your camera will be fine. Foggy lens is an issue of water entering the phone's camera through a hole either from headphone jack or microphone hole in the top. Your phone might not be waterproof anymore. So be careful about that. Better give it to Service center and get it fixed if your phone is under warranty..
I have experienced the same issue. I believe that it's simple physics - when you submerge humid air trapped in the case suddenly into cool water, vapor condensates on cool surface - in this case camera lens. It might take a while to disappear again. My solution was to put phone on something warm (tv set-top-box) with camera facing down and flaps open to vaporize the condensation, then left phone in room temperature with flaps open for few hours. Users with hot and humid air might be more prone to this issue than those in cold and dry environment.

Sony z5 Frosted glass back prone to cracking?

Hello, this is my first time posting on this forum, great forum!
Now to my issue!
Bought gold version 3 weeks ago and on this sunday the frosted backglass cracked by it self, or atleast with no fall to the ground.
(Would love to post picture of the crack but XDA has 10 post rule, comming soon)...
This happend, i guess in my front pocket while driving for less than 20 min, i'm 100% that is was not cracked before i left. i did a web search to check if this may be an reported problem. only other source i could find was an comment on theverge.com but their phone had a similar type of crack as mine had and it cracked without abuse.
So im wondering, do other people have this problem?
I just sendt my phone to get serviced on warrenty, but as broken glass usally get dismissed as user error, i want to get other stories like mine to back up my claim as production error.
If others have this similar crack, please post about it, a picture would help and tell shortly how it happend. Thank you.
I did have this issue with my Z3, not dropped, but a giant big crack did appear.
I sent in for warranty to the 3rd party company that handles it here in Australia (can't remember their name but they weren't very good) and no surprise they said no to a warranty.
I hope this doesn't happen to my Z5!!!
I already know 2 more cases of Z5 with cracked back without any further fall damage. Most of these cases are after playing a game for a while or doing something else that heats up the phone a lot. I know i am never buying a sony ever again. This has been a problem ever since the first Z serie came out all sony does is pull out a big fat middle finger.

Has been a Problem with any glass back cover on any phones. Slap on a screen protector and youre good to go.
just use a screen protector? won't help with self cracking. i'ts a 700+ dollar device. it should not do that. but yea, glass may crack sometimes. but Sony knows that the glass have cracked in earlier phones, should have learned to avoid that, though on the Z5 it seems like they have tried to make the glass more protected against fall damage.
Had Z, Z1, Z2, Z3 and Z5. No cracked glass, back or front.

dont underestimate a piece of plastic, you have no idea how many times that piece of plastic sheet saved my phones from cracking. I dropped my original Z Nth times and it didnt even crack/scratch a bit. There is another purpose for screen protectors other than preventing the screens from scratching.

Yes, a screen protector will help against fall damage. but when it cracks by it self, it's not that usefull. And my last phone (Z3) needed to faceplant a concret floor to crack the screen. so that the Z5 is cracking without falling is not the same case.
Anyway, Talked with Sony's Nordic support team. They said that my type of crack, "Hairline crack" should be coverd by Warrenty. But with a 3 party repair firm, they may say otherwise. my phone just arrived this morning. Will update status.

That looks like a crack by external force in small areas creating the ripples. Kinda interesting that the crack goes past the lens cover in plastic in a straight line. Almost like it is photoshopped considering the cracking line on the SONY logo and how it goes over and under with no separation and that it seems to have different resolution vs phone when zoomed in..
Neverthless the same was heared with previous Z models and looking at many of the photos it was evident that both cracking and bending was by user and external force applied. Everyone is innocent they say.. mmm well..
Why glass anyway?
Does anyone know why Sony even bothered to use glass for the rear? I mean, it looks like plastic, feels like plastic and even sounds like plastic when you tap it.
Is it just to prevent scratching?

The like to use "premium" materials for their flagship phones.

Phone's sweet though. No complaints except I should've gotten the green one.
Out of curiosity. The ones that have cracked backsides, do you use the phones vibrate function a lot? Wondering becouse it is really strong and might create oscillation waves that maybe weakens the Dragonglass.

That glass is sensitive to oscillating vibrations and might make it more pron to break in certain conditions.
Woke up to this little surprise.
The Phone was lying on my table over night (not loading or anything).

seems like all these issues are just the back, also, users don't have screen protectors on it. Just pointing out the "obvious." just dropped my phone from waist height on to the wooden floor and the screens didn't crack at all nor are there any dents. thank god to the screen Ps. Don't get why you guys are so against screen Ps......
glass crack because of heat and the external temperature, this is called "stress cracks." Why is the back cracking most often? because there is more heat produced on the back than the front. and sorry guys we don't live in an era where glass don't crack, live with it or prevent it.
Don't have anything against sp's, i like peeling of the plastic on new stuff, sp's resembles that so in my case I will peel it of after a couple of days. anyhow, i don't think a sp would have helped my crack or F_spindels. if there is a problem with the production of the Z5, the glass will break, SP or not.
wooden floors are not that hard of a surface to hit, never broken a screen on wooden floors. Tiles and concrete have been killers in the past for me.

XZ2P camera lens cover scratched

Hi,
Basically the camera lens cover of my XZ2P is getting scratched more and more (idk why). My question is that are the scratches on the glass/plastic cover or is it on a coating covering the glass/plastic. If the latter is true, that would mean, I could potentially remove the coating and the camera cover would be unscratched, right?
Going to a service center is not an option as in my country they do not offer assistance with the XZ2P.
Please help.
Thank you

Hello,
If your scratch looks like this: https://i.redd.it/os2d7mzo2o621.jpg then is the coating. My camera started scratching out of the blue, i tought it is the glass but it was the coating.

Thanks for your reply! You helped me out a lot. Yes, it is the same thing only worse. What I do not understand is that even though the coating is getting messed up, the pictures are still coming out decent/normal. I am however concerned that if the coating gets totally ruined, the pictures will be messed up. I have seen some videos where people have taken their coatings off using spirits/alcohol but I am still unsure if I should do this since there will be no protection left!
Thanks again bro!

Mine is all gone and the picure quality does not seem to be afected. Did some tests in low-light/outside light/artificial light and the pictures are just fine. It is strange that 1000 usd phone is scratching so easy..
In Poland it's look like this:
My Xperia XZ2 Premium problem start with two small spot. Now it is one big blur. I send the phone to Sony's authorized service. I received the following information:
The diagnosis showed damage not covered by the free warranty service. A cost estimate was issued. Please contact the place of returning the device for repair (Salon / Shop / Authorized Service Center) in order to obtain information about the cost estimate. I'm having this exact same issue with my XZ2P. Delamination of the camera glass coating. My issue occurred within 3-4 months of purchase. I have been without the phone for 2-3 months now while I argue with Sony UK and SBE (the authorised repair centre) about the fact that it's a defective materials issue and not physical damage as they keep claiming to avoid a warranty repair. They continue to refuse their contractual warranty obligations. They are demanding I pay an inspection fee to have it returned to me without the issue even repaired.
So frustrating that Sony expect to charge so much for a flagship device like this but not stand by and repair it when it's defective within months of purchase.
I've always looked after the phone, it's been in a case since opening the box and never dropped or had anything near the camera glass to cause a scratch. There's not a scratch on the thing. Just this frustrating blemish on the camera glass from the defective and delaminating coating.
No wonder Sony had to retrench from the world market with poor quality from a flagship device like this followed up with no support what so ever.

Thankfully there is a decent support staff member on the Sony mobile support forums that was finally able to resolve this dispute for me when multiple support staff at SBE UK and Sony UK refused to listen. Phone repaired under warranty and I'm now awaiting it's return.

Unbelievable but also not surprising, only had my XZ2 Premium back for a month post camera glass coating repair, and it’s already delaminating on the replacement housing. What a joke! How did Sony let such a bad design on an expensive flagship get through R&D? I’m glad I didn’t have to pay for the repair given this second materials failure in a short period of time. I’ll not be bothering with another warranty repair given the debacle last time. I’ll be stripping the coating off like others have done once it gets bad enough. So disappointed with Sony.
So the camera glass coating wore on my XZ2 Premium so badly in just a few months that the camera couldn't take a photo without being blurry with a white haze. I tried stripping the coating off with rubbing alcohol but it made the haze worse after completely removing the top layers. However I can confirm that polishing the camera glass with a fine cerium oxide compound removes all of the faulty coatings and binding layers from the glass so it's clear again. My XZ2 Premium can now thankfully take decent photos. It's a bit ridiculous that I had to go to such an extent to repair the phone myself to make the camera actually functional again. I certainly wasn't interested in fighting with Sony UK over a second warranty claim for such a poorly manufactured flagship device.
Hi,
This has happened to my XZ2 Premium and I'm not sure what to do. I have experienced Sony's/SBE's warranty repair process on a previous device and it was not a good experience so reluctant to send them my phone.
Can I ask how you used the cerium oxide? Does it need to be used with a small polishing wheel on something like a Dremel?
Many thanks in advance.
I guess you could contact the relevant Sony support email for your world region and explain the defect and the issues that other users have faced and see if they can guarantee a repair under warranty for you device and push the issue prior to sending it in for repair.
Failing that, I used the cerium oxide with a Drexel and felt polishing disk. I purchased carpro ceriglass as it’s a gentle formula you can use by hand on car windscreens. It did a good job, very minor surface swirls can be seen under the right light so I could go one step further with and ultra fine cerium oxide compound but the camera looks and works just fine. To protect the metal trim and glass back of the phone, I covered it with masking tape and used a clean sharp blade to cut out the hole around the camera glass before polishing. Makes clean up easier also. You need to keep working it a little bit at a time and keep the slurry wet and reapply as needed until you reach the result you’re after.
You can also up a replacement oem back housing from witrigs for a reasonable price. It’s a fairly straightforward swap out if you watch their repair videos, you just need to purchase the finger scanner sticker and lcd supporting frame sticker to put the phone back together properly with new adhesives.

Hi,
Thanks for your reply.
I have submitted photos of the defect on my device to Sony UK support and awaiting their response.
Failing that I'll have to consider the cerium oxide option as replacement back covers in the uk are nearly £100!
Many thanks
This happened to mine, and it was accepted for repair under the warranty.
