Broken HDR and bad quality camera in AOSP ROMs - G3 General

Guys, i don't know how many of you had the time to properly test the camera in any AOSP roms, but look at this.
First photo was taken with poor light and Stock ROM and camera, second photo was taking with similar poor light using a AOSP rom and Google Camera:

I had to disable HDR to take the second picture, if i enable HDR in the camera using a AOSP rom the picture gets REALLY dark, almost black.
Looks to me there is something wrong with the camera implementation for AOSP roms, i dont expect the same quality as stock but HDR seems to be completely broken.
Have you tried this? It would be great to have other user's feedback to provide the devs with more information.
Remember to test in poor light conditions, where HDR would make a difference.

Man, you just made me hungry with that photo! Not fair!
Anyways, AOSP may not always be the better camera, which sucks. Until they figure out how to make it work better, you might be stuck with the bad pictures.
I've even seen this happen when installing 3rd party cameras on AOSP. It still doesn't work. It might have something to do with something else within the AOSP code-base.

Camera drivers are not, and will never be, released by LG. Hence all not-stock Roms will have an inferior camera. Will not change.

I don't think nothing can be changed. I used AOSP roms for many years and my two last phones had HDR working fine.
We may never have the exact same quality as Stock but that doesn't mean we will never have HDR working.

Where do I say that? I only say the quality will always be inferior. Numerous apps already have more functions than stock. Only issue is the quality is, much, lower.

I get that LG will never release the drivers, what i am saying is we may not need the drivers to be released to fix the HDR camera implementation.
Like i said, i don't expect the quality to be the same as stock, ever, but this is the first phone i owned in which i am unable to use HDR in AOSP roms, this may be fixable, that's all

i have to say that on LG G2 aosp camera got always better over time, i hope this will here be the same.
i could remember a stock camera port on LG G2, maybe some talented dev should try the same for the G3.

I switched between AOSP and Stock a few times and tested the camera more thoroughly , after the tests i could not stay with AOSP anymore, the difference is way too big.
I am talking to a few devs about this bug but they don't seem to be interested. People seem to think the camera is fine, even thou we don't have HDR...

We need to get someone like [email protected] interested - perhaps a bounty or something. BTW, has anyone tried the CM11S CameraNext ?

I am contacting a few devs about this issue, please do the same if you can, its just a matter of finding the right person.
I have tried a few different apps, but the app is just the top tier, i think the driver implementation is broken or something like that, all apps will behave the same.

Ur right.. The driver is custom to the way the stock kernel behaves. So the only to use it in aosp ROMs is to port the kernel to use the driver.
This is actually why stock Linux drivers are reusable and android is not.
I have very less hope of this happening though

Hi, everybody!
The camera stuff about AOSP and the G3 it's a shame. On one hand I love the AOSP concept, specially with the Lollipop iteration. It's purer, smother and more beautiful in its simplicity than any Stock ROM. But on the other hand, the camera is one of the best and most avance features in the G3. In my opinion, converting this wonderful camera into a bad one, similar to any other we can find in a low-end device is something I can't just deal with. I hope that it's a question of time that this situation will be solve.
Until then we have amazing custom ROMS, based on stock LG software that we can use. Of course they are not AOSP, but they are much better than the original version.
With chupachups 3.0 my phone get more than 41000 points in Antutu. I remember that with the original software the score was about 25000. It´s much faster and smoother than the original one, and completely stable... zero issues. And you don't have to sacrifice the camera quality at all. The best of both worlds.

Could you make a comparison photo stock lollipop vs AOSP w/ this camera app?
Or just sample photos with the camera app?
The crappy camera quality is the only thing keeping me away from AOSP ROMs (I'm an Instagram freak lol)

I am really out of time to rollback to stock to take a comparison picture now but i did it when i first found this app, take my word for it the picture quality is as good as stock even in low light, the only problem is the UI because the dpis are different.
There are devs working on this thou, we should have a improved UI very soon.

Thanks for your feedback! one more reason pushing me to AOSP then No one has yet posted a photo sample though haha
The only missing things will be QuickCircle but that could be impossible since it's embedded in Lg's Framework.

Cyanogen 6.0. Is it way over rated?

Here is a question for everyone. It's not a trolling question, nor is it designed to provoke anger. As a faithfull user of cyanogen 6 since its inception (nightly updates, RC1, RC2, and Full) Lets boil this down.
Things that work:
1. Its fast as hell.
2. No sense (makes it fast as hell).
3. Highly customizable
4. ADW tweaks are nice.
5. Feel free to add something else in here.
6. Nice screen rotation for car mounting.
7. Oh ya....its fast as hell and, as has been posted in here a million times, "...is buttery smooth."
Things that still don't work at all or work well:
1. HDMI
2. 4G
3. Radio
4. MMS with picture or voice (tried it again yesterday)
5. Voicemail issues (we all know what they are)
So......essentially....except for some modest, user appreciable "non-sense" speed boosts....this ROM actually removes some pretty darn important features.
Explain the logic of this to me?
Cyanogen has done excellent work. I am not trying to squelch that, but he (and his team) seem to be unable to resolve issues EVO users should and do find important.
With the new sense roms out there and their subsequent kernal releases, they perform, user appreciably, nearly the same as this rom with all the above MAJOR FUNCTIONS working. (Linpak, FPS2d, and Quadrant scores for which I can reproduce screen shots)
So, you get a fast rom with few of exceptional functions / features this phone is capable of.
Do you think maybe....the rom is a crutch for the phone.
Just one man's humble opinion. Maybe further versions with the important features useable will kick butt. For now......Come on. What is the obsession?
Would someone please explain my confusion on this seemingly obvious question.
So....Ill keep it as a nandroid backup. For what? I don't know.
-JZ
Pro: Stagefright AAC decoding patch implemented in CM6
Con: Bluetooth prevents phone from sleeping
I agree.. seems ridiculous to me. I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole.
I don't really want to get nit picky, but I agree with your points, and it's personally not the rom for me. At least not in its current state.
Didn't you post this in the CM6 thread?
all the features in cm6 currently PWN 4g and hdmi. for those that other are either fooling theirselves or havent really actually played with the rom
-i mean really, hdmi is nice, but you cant even use it to its full extent now...why waste the time? a saying that comes to mind "if you gonna do something, do it big" or "why halfass when you'll just have to come back and finish it up later"
sorry i just dont think a HALF working hdmi in sense or even stock roms for that matter are worth bragging about.
-4g is NICE, however its only ONE phone that has this option as of right now (excluding the samsung epic that just launched today). It makes NO sense at all to focus on a feature that is only exclusive to ONE phone...not to mention the code for 4g is intricately woven into Sense, so it takes some time to remove and code for it
-Radio? Seriously? It just seems like yer being a hater here.... I do realize having the FM radio is nice and all....but even in the stock roms you have to have gay ass headphones.
With all the pandora radio, stitcher radio and other podcast..... is it REALLY that big of a deal? i think not especially since i dont have to be on a leash with headphones and can play through my speaker
-NO other rom has a higher bitpool for bluetooth aka if you use a2dp to stream to your car's stereo...unless your using cm6.... your stream is gonna sound like ****!!! This is a BIGGGG feature
and whas the issue with MMS? the 160 char limit thing? I dont seem to suffer from that problem....maybe its a hit or miss?
as far as the voicemail...i dont use sprint's voicemail on this phone....i link it to my gvoice....but i can definitely understand the frustration not being able to get to your vmail.
i guess people like cm6 because it pwns and own all while not being a bloatware king and slowing **** down
ya....i wasn't sure where the "most appropriate" place to post it was. You know how folks won't answer your question/quandry, but rather say, "this isn't the appropriate place for this." So....pre-empting that I posted it in both places in case one gets deleted.
They do great work for other phones, but I think the EVO 4G was just to complex.
it pwns? with modest appreciable speed increases (seriously.....post some objective data for me....not subjective)?
4g, hdmi, (ill give you the radio), mms (not sending messages with photos or sound or both attached) are not little things. Also....if you have a decent HDMI set it will recognize the settings and accomodate....so come on. OBJECTIVE not SUBJECTIVE.
The sense roms have comprable linpak, quadrant, and BETTER fps2d scores.
Im not hating....just posting OBJECTIVE findings.

My thoughts exactly.
Nope.
HDMI? Why would I want that in a phone?
4G? I'm not in a 4g area.
Radio? Haha.. why? It never worked right for me anyway and my Zune gets better reception.
MMS - I sent my wife a picture just yesterday. No issues there.
VM - I use GV and always have. No issues.

Bro, I'm not going to do research for you. If you haven't already, flash CM6 final on your phone. If it doesn't fly compared to a Sense ROM, you are doing something wrong or you need to return your phone.

That is SMS (aka texting) and the 160 character limit is the CDMA technology limit, has nothing to do with a ROM. MMS (aka picture/multimedia mail) is what he is referring to. But I'm not sure exactly what problems he's referring to, because I though MMS worked fine on my phone when I had CM on it.
You feel it is faster by far then other roms, that is your opinion, hard factual numbers do not necessarily agree with you. I didn't want to get into the nit picky, as I stated before, because honestly I respect CM for doing things I could never dream of doing. But your post reads as if a one sided defensive retort. Prove him wrong in his stance, saying it feels faster does not do so, because that is one of it's few claims to fame.
And yes, I've run multiple nightlies, and ran RC1, I did not care for any of them enough to keep me around long. I am waiting however for 6.1 and look forward to trying it out.
Thats it......too complex. I can't think of anything else. The argument that
1 there really isnt that much 4g out there
2 HDMI really doesnt work
3 who really sends pics / voice MMS anyhow.
4 are you really using your FM radio (no.....im not but thats not the point in the whole picture)
5 voicemail issues - just move to SOMTHING ELSE (gvoice etc)
These are poor agrguments. Post objective findings on why Cyanogen 6.0 for the EVO is such a better rom. Give me some FreakEvo vs Cyanogen quadrant photos (what ever kernal you like to use). Set cpu settings equal and EVO switch settings equal.
Post some photos. Show me why CM6 is better. Don't show me emotionally.....show me with objective data. Then.....ill understand the "non-sense" and stop my silly confusion. Thats my whole point with my silly quandry. I really DO like CM6...I just want the features my phone is capable of (which.....most of them I do use...) to work.

I understand your curiosity about what makes it measurably better, but I don't undestand what makes you think anyone would be motivated to win you over..
I love CM6 and am very happy to be running it on my phone, it's smooth and reliable and I'm happy with it. I could give a **** if you like it or decide to start using it.
If you don't see the value, and if you prefere a sense based rom then use a sense based rom. If you want to know the difference then flash them both and run your objective tests and share the results with the community. It would be interesting to know but I don't forsee anyone providing you with this data in an attempt to convince you to become a CM6 user.
You want some objective data? CM is powered by unicorns.. does it get any better than that?

Nexus 4 Camera Tweak, Coming Soon ?

Hey there,
I know that the Nexus 4 is an aweome phone...
But I took some pictures recently and the quality is Okay.

I was wondering if we could see a similar mod coming on the Nexus 4?

As someone pointed out to me, HTC, Samsung, etc. and their respective "skins" (Sense, TouchWiz) are what pack those image capturing features. Google has much less invested into the camera scene than say, HTC with their "ImageSense" technology.
Could Google fix this? I suppose, though I don't know if they will. I've pondered the same questions as yourself.
My N4 is still on backorder, though I've been wondering what affect using something like CameraZoom FX would have. The N4's camera hardware is top notch, it's the software that's lacking. Maybe an app fixes that some, maybe not (I've yet to try).
Another thought is download Snapseed (used it, love it). I would think the stock N4 camera software + Snapseed would yield pleasant photos (but again, I do not have mine yet and am unable to perform any of these tests).
yea camera could be a bit better.

No this is gonna be the same as the nexus 7 video hack, it was 420p to 720p or something like that but it doesn't change anything with taking pictures.
I'm actually pretty happy with the camera, most point and shoot works this way, hell even photos taken from a dslr looks bland without at least light editing.
Better front camera would be nice.
Umm, does anybody know if the is a physical button to use to take pictures?

i just rma'd my phone due to weird camera issues. It would launch into camera app and the screen would become unresponsive. strange.
i do know google barely touched the camera and the pictures that come out were pretty untouched. Also as we can see video recording is at a super low bitrate (???? not sure why they would make that decision)
hopefully this update fixes some of the weird issues where the camera constantly autofocuses and the focus ring stays on the picture after you take it
The camera isn't a strong point on the N4. The colors look very washed out.
Google may already know that their image quality isn't the best, thus their interest in the Kodak patent portfolio. It appears as though a number of these patents have already been licensed to other phone manufacturers like Samsung, LG, and Nokia.
and hot damn that LED flash is bright indoors. Most of the indoor shots I take end up people cowering away with the light!
Yeah, the pics I took with flash in the dark just messed the pics up. The flash was too bright or the timing was off.

That's one of the things that I'd like to be see fixed with some sort of mod, and I think it'd be reasonable to expect that it wouldn't be so far-fetched that it's not worth someone's time. In other words, I hope it's easy enough to do that someone does it.
Does anyone have any tips for getting the shutter to focus on where you've tapped it, instead of it going berserk and focus-unfocus-focus-unfocus-focus ad nausem?
OP, I highly recommend you take down the pictures with your license plate present and check if the uploader you used to host these pics scrubs meta info (gps coordinates etc). If you uploaded directly from your phone, the meta info is probably still available.

Nexus 5 HDR+ port?

Since the Nexus 5 has the new "HDR+" mode in it's camera, essentially an optimised HDR mode, would it be possible to port this to non Nexus 5 hardware? Specifically our Nexus 4? I haven't seen any thread asking a similar question or any attempted port of the mode. Some might say it's not worth it, but I personally notice great improvement with HDR enabled on most of my photos apart from the low lighters.
Since a few people tried, and sort of saw improvement, I got some motivation and am attempting my own port. I don't think it will ever be a flashable zip, but maybe some actual developer can convert it if I succeed. I promise nothing, but it'll be awesome if I or someone else gets somewhere
EDIT: I've got good enough reason to believe that the 4.4.1 software update introduced this algorithm already, since everyone is reporting HDR improvements on all ROMs with 4.4.1/2.

dosent that uses some hardware resources witch are not avalaible on nexus 4?
I don't think so, its just an advanced image processing algorithm for merging the shots taken. Its like the GEL launcher, another random exclusive.
The nexus 4 and Galaxy Nexus also have no shutter lag, the only lag is really down to the image processing itself since 5 mp and 8 mp shots taken take some time to get rendered fully

Only exclusive camera hardware I can think of is the OIS, but that shouldn't affect image processing since it's just an accelerometer and ball bearings that allows the camera to move around to reduce shaking during video

First, merry xmas all
As the OP suggested, i also believe that hdr+ is some sort of better algorhitm. Hdr taken with camera hdr studio apk on nexus 4 is much faster and almost blur free, plus better saturation.
I have tried to replace camera and gallery apk with those of nexus 5 4.4.2. They work alrite, but generate more or less the same image quality. I tried to replace the lib files also but then the camera wont open, spesifically libmmcamera_hdr_lib.so, libmmcamera_wavelit_so. However replacing libmmcamera_image_stab.so does not cause any problem, yet it doesnt seem to affect the image quality
Replacing some other camera name related lib also do not cause any problem, but their file size are the same with the ones in nexus 4 4.4.2. So i guess, they are the same and no need to replace.
It would be awesome if someone can port hdr+ or any other better algorhitm for nexus 4 camera.

Totally agree, I've heard good stuff about the HDR+ mode so I was hoping it could be ported. Thanks for testing it, its a shame its not that easy, although heck this is XDA, there'll be someone with a cup of coffee and 5 minutes of free time who can do it

Not to be discouraging, one post in another thread mentioned that the HDR+ is a cpu feature. I can not confirm this is true or not.
HOWEVER, in another thread about porting the whole nexus 5 4.4.2 ROM to Nexus 4, i found this.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=48216227#post48216227
Although the HDR+ is not available, but as you can see the image quality is waaaaayyyy better suggesting a new algorithm is at work starting in 4.4.1
I do not wish to flash this ROM since some users reported bugs. Hopefully, others can make a flashable zip only for the camera from this ROM.

I doubt its a CPU feature, its just a HDR mode. The only CPU related task in that is rendering and merging the shots, which our S4 can do just fine.

My thoughts exactly. Looking for a better camera quality solution myself. I hope someone could get into this.
i am not sure whether this will help or not. following this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2558142
i found that the zip contains the following apk and lib:
GoogleCamera.apk
libgcam.so
libgcam_swig_jni.so
libjni_filtershow_filters.so
libjni_mosaic.so
liblightcycle.so
libnativehelper_compat.so
so, i decided to manually replace all the above files in 4.4.2 nexus 4, with those I extracted from stock 4.4.2 nexus 5 plus the gallery apk, and the corresponding odex file (i am completely stock, rooted only). set it to rw r r, then reboot.
I did not do any detail before after comparison because I am doing this from office, sstttt... last day before holidays  still no HDR+ but i do feel: open faster, the color improves a bit. again this is probably purely just my feeling. nevertheless, decided i am going to stick with this for my new year holidays/until another solution comes up. hopefully, it will help me take awesome photos
I am attaching all those files here in this zip file. Unzip and copy manually to the root/system/lib folder and root/system/app folder, replacing each file accordingly. permissions rw r r. reboot. Dont forget to back up your old ones. Please feel free to try at your own risk. Happy holidays all!

Can't really tell from the pictures posted since they aren't identical in setup. It takes just that small difference for a camera to change the settings for the picture taken (and the post processing as well).

Foto Comparison

You may be wondering about the different quality pictures on AOSP ROM vs Stock. Certainly, there are way to improve the quality on AOSP, and my short experience the best way to do it is porting the LG G2 camera to one of these ROMS. However, I have felt always that not matter what you do or try the quality of the photos taken with a LG G3 Stock Camera is much, much better. So this the aim of these thread. I want to show you the different results obtained using different Camera-ROM combinations:
1) Stock Cyanogenmod 12 Camera
2)G2 Camera ported on Cyanogenmod 12
3)G3 camera on Stock ROM (Cloudy 2.0)
As far as you can see the photos taken with the LG G3 Stock ROM are much better: less noise, more detailed and warmer and more natural colors.
Thanks to all that made this comparison possible
The great LG G3 CM 12 team: @AngelBob, @invisiblek, @AndroidUser00110001, @sooti, @manups4e
@Cloudyfa, the amazing developer behind the best G3 ROM (Cloudy 2.0)
@Skin1980, the genius that made possible MultIROM in our device, one of the milestones in the G3 development.
@sefnap, the nice guy that allowed to port the G2 camera to AOSP, the best way to take good pictures in these ROMs.
I hope you find this comparison helpful. If so, please, push the thanks button. I'm new on the forum, and nothing makes me happier that seeing my Thank Meter increasing. :fingers-crossed:
Thanks for your attention and time.
Grate post, and very useful. The most of people stay with stock rom only because of camera quality. I like photos and beside phone design, thats the reason why i bought this phone.
I think it will be better to compare images with 100% zoom at same image. I created images so you can compare.
Notice: this can be 100% compared only if shoots was taken from same position while phone is standing on steady object. Anyway, its good to know the difference witch is a lot important for me.

I am also trying to find some free time, to install 5-6 applications and compare them. If you take shoots and check only on the phone, every photo look good.
I saw that ported G2 camera have the closes to the stock as it was supposed to be.

Hi! On CM12 I tried AOSP Stock Camera and afterwards a ported the "bumped" G2 camera to the ROM. I took some series of pictures in order to compare the AOSP to the G2 camera, and the quality was much better with the last one, specially in low light conditions, when it was much less noise using the G2 camera. I was in CM and derivatives (AICP, RR, for some weeks), and I tried a lot different cameras (Google, Lenovo, FV-5). These two worked far better than AOSP camera. However I found that for a AOSP ROMs, the better pictures were taking using the G2 camera. But even this one is no close to Stock LG G3 camera, so I'm now back to Stock.
Certainly the camera is not the only reason. With Cloudy ROM, I have and incredibly battery life (more than two days on normal use), amazing performance (43k on Antutu), stability and everything just working. To sum up, I'd say that with Cloudy my device is a better device.
I do love Cyanogenmod and all the others AOSP ROM, but all these ROM, at this moment, don't work as well as Stock. They may be worthy if your using a Nexus o Google Edition device or if your device is not longer supported. But I think, that if we are speaking about high end device (G3, Note 4, etc), it's a better idea to stay Stock, because otherwise you will miss a lot of features.
Coming back to Cloudy, the only thing that I miss of CM is the UI. I love material design and the original idea of Google. It's the simply most beautiful and well designed OS ever. Unfortunately, the LG implementation of Lollipop is not very good, because it's essentially the same that KitKat's. I really hope that this could change with the G4 arrival.

Yes. I agree
Wasn't there a dev trying to port STOCK G3 camera to AOSP?
How's it going?
I think once this is ported, lot of people will shift to CM/AOSP on this device... I'm one of those.
I've been using the moto x camera, http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/app-motorola-camera-5-0-7-1-material-t3007246 , and it's been extremely good for me, gives me quality pictures that seem to compare to stock. The app also takes advantage of the G3's laser focus which is cool?
I'm sorry I don't have the time or ability to test this camera vs. Other cameras that work on cm12 for the vs985, so I was just hoping to bring this app to your attention so you may, or may not, look into it yourself.
can you point me to the G2 ported camera?

Hola, paisano!
I'm not sure, but I seemed to understand that even when G3 camera could be ported to AOSP ROMs, the pictures wouldn't be as good as on Stock, because of some LG proprietary drivers missing that need the stock kernel in order to work. That's why the G2 ported camera is no as good on AOSP as on LG G2 stock ROMs.
I may be wrong, but I'm afraid that you want AOSP and good pictures, the Nexus line is the only way.

Android 9 features report

I saw that a lot of people ask a lot of other people who had the time to flash the new android pie,
I decided to share my experience with it so far so you wont have to go searching in forums for stuff
*recent apps are still the same.
*switching to 4k mod using adb commands no more requires you to install a special dialer, it works fine with the dialer that comes with the firmware, also recent apps are no longer black.
*I have to be honest I flashed a firmware that isnt for our single sim device and isnt even for my region but the animations in it are kind of weird, I cant say slow or fast but are weird in my opinion.
*camera UI is changed, I dont see anything special though, you can now have the google lens app which has new features that im sure most of you already know about (like reading and copying texts, identifying products etc...), video recording doesnt record HDR as some have stated, either that or I have not found out how to use it yet, but there is FULL HD 960 fps now.
*night mode does not work I dont know if its because of the firmware or that it simply doesnt work.
*phone does not feel as snappy as oreo I am being very honest, especially with power button, when I press it it takes about half a second for the phone to turn on screen.
*notification settings are new like what you saw on other devices, though I wanted round edges, but its still edgy corners like always.
*battery didnt show improvement (tho needs further testing) but it didnt also show worse so thats a good start.
*no SDR to HDR as people thought.
*sound levels didnt change, system touch sounds are still the same, ringtone and notification tone still the same
so far thats all I have encountered Ill let yall know when anything special pops in my eyes while i use the device.
*note:
I would really say to all you who have not received the update yet, there is no really something to be hyped about, just wait for your carrier to release the update.
if you have any further questions, feel free

Using the Google phone call app was my choice since Sony are not updating their dialer and we still have the oldest one, and I'm very happy that the recent apps are no longer black, thanks for the info, I agree we shouldn't get so hyped about it, since the most iconic features are not included like gestures, new nav bar, etc

If you're upset about gestures not being included by default, you shouldn't be because this xda app on playstore (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.xda.nobar) will get you a similar experience. There are alot of customization options as well. I've been using it for several months now.

About the SDR to HDR conversion, the XZ2 and XZ3 don't have it as a setting called "SDR to HDR" but it's on the "Video image enhancement". Doesn't the XZ Premium have It? (Oreo already has it but does Pie convert it to HDR? )

I'm from Australia and my phone was purchased in Israel. Flashed the Pie VN on my G8141 and all's working great. Including volte which is not available in Israel. I unlocked my bootloader and everything so I have magisk and I'm using the lawnstep module to get the new recents menu, only better because lawnchair has a bunch of extra features.

I have a question tho, I have a locked bootlader, and flashed this VN update, it has nothing to do with the bootloader right? I havent messed anything, you know how it is in Israel, the slightest change in a device can give the company a reason not to do you any favors and fix your device under warranty...
so I am all good right? nothing is wrong with flashing this update as its legit right?
Does Sony's Android 9.0 support the Camera2 API (HAL3) required by Google Camera?
What about the sound? Xzp have a horrible low (or poor) sound specially YouTube, Facebook videos, etc, music with Sony music app are fine.
Thanks.
