I'm on Verizon and have a stunningly good plan (4 people unlimited data $10 - $10 for all 4 combined) so I have to buy off market phones.
I had/have a GNEX that I use with 2 extended batteries. It's starting to show it's age but it's still useful. I also use a Nexus 7 so I don't really depend on the phone.
I jumped on the Moto X developer edition deal even though I really wanted a Note 3.
It's unquestionably better but I'm current suffering from buyers remorse. There's not a lot it can do that I couldn't already. It's nice that it integrates better with my car and while I don't use voice much I could see myself doing it more (apart from that really annoying loud confirmation beep).
IT seems smaller, partly because it is and partly because of the extended battery I was using but it makes the screen feel smaller. I'm worried about the battery life.
Just rambling though and welcome any comments.
What were you looking for it to do? You never said. There's not much a GNex can't do compared to any other Nexus device
Give it a week. These days, phones are so similar, it's hard not feel underwhelmed at first. Felt the same way about my Note 3 and Nexus 5 when I first got them. Moto X has features that you'll grow to love and use.

I hope so! Had my phone for 4 days now, still don't know if I truly love this phone vs a nexus 5...
It feels great and is faster than my old S2, but the N5 was/is so tempting.
MotoX is solid and I am starting to like active notifications. It is the same size as my S2 which I love, but still ehh, maybe I will like something bigger...
Grass is always greener right?
It's not surprising you feel buyer's remorse. You wanted a Note 3, which is much larger than the Moto X. I went from a Gnex to a Nexus 4 which is slightly larger, and then to a Moto X which is smaller but has the same screen size as the Nexus 4. Apart from the size, going from Gnex to Moto X should feel like a pretty good upgrade as Moto X is better than Gnex in almost every respect.

I don't understand what the OP was thinking. Moto X over the Note 3? They're 2 different phones that serve two different purposes. If you mostly use the Nexus 7, then what was the point in upgrading? If you simply had a itch to scratch, going to the store and toying around is infinitely better than this situation.
I have a Nexus 7 and now a Moto X and love the combination of the 2 together. I came from a Note 2 which was a great phone but I found my self wanting it to be larger and at the same time wanting it to be smaller. Multimedia is great now on my Nexus 7 and my Moto X is the perfect phone to compliment the tablet. I had a Nexus 5 but returned it for the Moto X and am glad that I did (not knocking the Nexus 5 because it is probably the 2nd best phone being sold now imo).

Try $350 over $759 ? At $750 I was not going to buy a new phone. When the Moto X deal came out I got excited and jumped on it

Exactly...not even close to being the same phones. First of all the Nexus was a piece of garbage, battery reception etc...X is a million times better in every way.
Seems like a bait thread to start a flame war. Bye

Wait... you say something inflammatory like "Nexus was a piece of garbage" and then say someone is baiting to start a flame war? Holy hipocrisy, Batman.
I think "ramblings" fits the original post well, though, since nothing about it is coherent.
There's nothing on it that you couldn't already do? Well, except for, you know, some of the main selling points like always-on voice control and active notifications. Anyway, there's arguably nothing meaningful on any phone you couldn't, in some way or another, already do.
Then a couple weird comments... It makes the screen feel smaller? The screen is not smaller. If it feels smaller, but isn't smaller, isn't that good? You're worried about battery life, but supply no reason why you are concerned?
Nothing wrong with rambling, I guess, but just be aware that people might look at this as bashing a phone without any substantive reason.
I love many things about the Moto X, but the Active Notifications feature is a game changer. After getting used to it I just can't imagine going back to another phone.
I had a Nexus 5, but went back to the Moto X. I also have a LG G2. I really like the X because of the active notifications and touchless controls. It also gives you somewhat of the vanilla android experience.

How about...not feel slow, hah.
It's like upgrading computers back in the day, from a good ol 500mhz pentium to a 1ghz pentium. Sure, they perform all the same functions, but it moves so much more quickly and smoothly.
You're all so nice
I had no problems with GNex, no signal problems, no battery issues + I had an extended battery. Even last week I did not feel it was slow.
Moto X is definitely better, but my question (for me) is whether it's $400 better. Since I use the N7 for most stuff I'm not sure I need to spend $400 on a phone. Active Notifications are cool but I don't find them all that useful. I had an app for it before and quickly stopped using it. I think it's to do with how I use the phone. Voice Control is nice and I've been trying to use it but it's not really my nature to talk to my phone
Perhaps the best thing about it, and perhaps the reason I will keep it, is that it integrates really well with my new car. This means I am not using Assist but it's worth it since it will interrupt radio and other things with text messages, read them out and let me auto reply. GNex just did calls and audio.
I really like Assist for driving but it's not getting used.
Screen seems smaller means that the actual screen seems small to me, it's a visual thing based on having a larger phone. Having more trouble typing on it for some reason, again probably because I'm used to the bigger feel.
Battery life will be key since I used a large extended battery and carried a spare. Rarely used the spare but did sometimes.
So don't get too defensive, it's a better phone, just not sure if I want to spend the money.
I find this threat to be somewhat useful amd amusing for a couple of reasons. First, the devices I have owned:
1 OG Droid--First with GPS/Google Maps, and my first smartphone. For me, ground-breaking
2 Galaxy Nexus--Mt first Nexus device. Face unlock is new, and performance is a major, major jump over my OG Droid, and the OG was rooted and rom'ed. GNex rooted, until warranty replacement 6 months ago. Stock since.
Nexus 7 wifi tablet (2013)--tethered to GNex
3 Moto-X VZW Developer Edition-- Faster than the GNex, by far. Much, much better battery. Seemingly smaller dev community support, but smoother out of the box than my best days with the GNex rom'ed. NFC unlock (as soon as my skip arrives with wife's MotoMaker). Active notifications. Quick camera unlock (wrist twist). Always listening feature for Google Now/Search. Unexpected quick upgrade to 4.4,
So, yes the phone is better in all respects than the GNex it replaces, but the gap in performance between the OG Droid and the GNex is LARGER than the gap in performance between the GNex and the Mot0-X, in my opinion.
I've only had this Moto-X for 4 days so far. I like that the bootloader is unlocked, AND I still have some warranty protection. Though the screen size is the same as the GNEX (I think), the Moto-X fits in the hand better (for me), and in the pocket as well (lighter, thinner).
I also see more bars of 4G LTE with the Moto-X, though I doubt the bars are an accurate measure of reception. I do know that Motorola radios are typically heralded as among the best.
So far, I am thrilled with this device.
vespadaddy, I've followed the EXACT same path as you OG, GNex, N7, MotoX. So I know you know what I am talking/rambling about
Do you use bluetooth in the car? I'm finding the MotoX is having problems the GNex didn't.

In moved from the N4 to the moto x and am quite pleased!
And don't forget, the moto x doesn't have to be $400 better than the galaxy nexus. The moto x is $250 better...because you can sell your GN for $150ish!
Typically I do sell gear but I had planned to keep the GNex just in case as a backup (my son has one also and he's likely to break his). I might find some media player use for it also.
I had thought of it in a similar way. I get to keep my super plan and it would have cost me at least $200 to get a new device and lose my plan.

Ruh roh. I do use bluetooth in the car. I've got a Mitsubishi with a stock bluetooth-capable stereo. Given that the Nexus 7 is so much snappier than the GNex, I have been using the Nexus as my music source in the car, via bluetooth.
Are you having problems pairing the Moto-X? I have not yet tried this, as my wife left the car in an airport lot for a work trip. As soon as she brings it back (likely tomorrow), I'll try and pai my Moto X and see how google music works.
So through a whole of problems with the GS4, and a little stroke of luck, I happened upon a Moto X 2014. I must say, the phone is smooth as butter. But I still feel like something is missing. My battery isn't a great feet, my camera is poor at best. The phone however is the fastest and smoothest I've ever seen an android phone. It makes me melt. But after using the LG G2 which I had for 2 days before this....I miss it comparatively to this. Just as fast, much larger battery, beautiful screen. The Moto X doesn't even have a "power save" feature, and that would at lest be helpful. I almost want to wait for the Droid Turbo, but by then my 14 days would be up. I'm just not sure what to do. So my question to others.....Are you happy with this device? or would you switch, given the opportunity? If so, to what?
In happy, if the camera was better, I would be happier, but I'll hold out for L in hopes of improved camera performance. If not, I have another upgrade in April, maybe grab a turbo if it doesn't look as bad as it has in the leaked photos.
I'm think off going back the LG G2. The camera may be the breaking point for me.

I don't take many pictures, but the ones I have taken have been fine. On par with a majority of the smart phones I have owned except a few that were above average. Most of them are just "meh" and any difference is still not great so I just don't let it get to me. If pictures were priority I would still be on the Lumia 930 hands down, or maybe the iPhone 6 plus, but not most of the Android handsets available that's for sure.
Overall I love the phone though. It just a great phone to use and really when it comes down to it that is what matters. There are things that could use improvement (screen brightness, camera, battery life). But none of those factors are BAD, just not exceptional. I get through a day with ease and the screen is fine except in bright sunlight. The phone makes up for it with a great feel and ease of use. Its super fast and fluid, and little things like ActiveDisplay just make it all that much better of an experience. Of all the phones I have owned in the last year (a lot) it is the first one I feel content with and not pining for a new phone (which is rare for me). I am excited for Android L .
I love my Moto X. I too came from a Galaxy S4 running CyanogenMOD and this is so smooth without having to do any tweaking whatsoever. I've had this phone for 11 days and I already try to wave my hand over other people's phones and expect it to just turn on when I pick it up. These may be new features I can't live without.
Short answer....best phone I have ever owned
I came from the HTC One, HTC One M8, and LG G3. Also had the Nexus 5 as my daily driver before leaving it for LG G3. ... This phone trumps them all (still use m8 for low light photos)
The bad......nothing really. The camera and battery are decent enough.....just nothing to brag on.
As far as performance....nothing is close. So smooth...so fast.....so fluid.
The phone screen looks amazing and the stereo headphone jack is provides the best sound I have heard outside of the HTCOne.
No phone is perfect.....but this phone came very close
I think it's too top heavy and not comfortable to hold. Maybe cuz I got leather and have a subconscious fear of scratching it or something. Ultimately, its fate w/me is doomed due to no root on verizon.
I'll give up the X if nexus comes out on verizon.

This is the only downfall for me as well. I want gravitybox so bad. Just for the PIE controls so I can hide the nav bar. That extra screen real estate along with the one handed reachability would make this phone perfect for me.
I don't care about the camera quality, not a big deal for me. And the battery life is sufficient for me.

you'll be happy that L will bring this:
1. power saver built in
2. native code for camera stuff
3. project volt, which is supposed to help in battery
4. ...and much more
right now, there is nothing on the market that I want. so no, i would not switch. next year, maybe
after a week or so of using its okay. battery life sucks, i dont care about the camera, not sure why but many apps crash on it more than my nexus 5, and i can barely just barely see some hiccups/lag when navigating through the homescreen and some apps ill wait for android L tho

Do you have ART enabled?
This phone is not top heavy, the center of its mass is right in the middle of the phone.
Just balance it on the index finger and you will see.
Best phone I used so far as well. But I never had any flagship devices before. Just a last years moto x, moto g, galaxy i9070... and an HTC one m8 as a phone for work, that's it.
But I saw many friends struggling with flagships while I was enjoying my moto x 2013.
I gave the HTC one m8 back to my boss and use the mx2013 now for my work and the mx2014 for private uses.
The mx2013 gave me an excellent experience, so I had no other choice than buying its successor.
BTW I hated the m8 even compared to the mx2013.
If Motorola doesn't **** it up, I'll buy their devices for a long time.
I could not be happier
Battery life could be bettet but ive yet to run out of it after a full day of work

It's in developer options. Don't enable it. Several users have reported an increase in force closes.
It's a bigger, faster, smoother moto x. If you liked the 2013 x but wanted something bigger, this will make you happy.
I like it, originally I let all the negative reviews get to me and even went back to my nexus 5 for a day. Then I realized how much nicer the moto x is. Its a great well rounded device. Unlocked bootloader with full warranty in tact, good camera, decent battery life, fast updates, near aosp and other great specs. Oh, and every time I'm on the phone I can smell wonderful leather lol.

That's what I read from the Motorola feedback network administrator, he said they are "treating the pure edition like the 2013 Dev edition."
I love it, but I am interested in seeing what the Turbo and Nexus 6 bring to table, especially since it'll be on VZW. That being said, jumping to 5.2" from 4.7" was noticeable, can't really imagine carrying around 5.96"...
FIRST THINGS FIRST. THIS IS DIRECTED TO BRAZIL USERS! It may help some folks from other countries but it is not what I had in mind.
So, I got my new moto X on Brazil retail for a month now. Came from 1st gen gen moto x and, before that I would pretty much root and mess around with every single phone I got my hands on. Never felt the need to do that on the old X. So, I got the new one with very high expectations.
So far I am not disappointed with it but there ARE areas for improvement. So, what I think of it right now:
The good:
- The camera is definetly upgraded from the old model, but that doesnt mean it is a good camera. I would definetly say it is a average in comparison to the poor one from before. Video is very good though.
- It feels so comfortable in the hand. I was a bit worried about the 5.2 screen and the sheer size of it (I do have big hands but I am not a fan on phablets at all) but it has a very comfortable grip and the metal frame gives a very good feel. The bigger dimple is ok.
- This is true flagship performance for for a great price for Brazil standards (I got mine for R$ 1424, (that's around $650 dollars) and I am pretty much on top of every benchmark test and performance test I make with my friends. The stock interface does shine here.
- The new version of moto software is GREAT! The waving hand to glance at the notifications is the greatest thing and we finally get a use for voice commands.
The bad:
- My battery time is far from great. I am a heavy phone user and I do need to charge it around 6 pm (10 hours off charger). I listen to music and game on commute (around 1 hour each way), have email notifications and whatsapp buzzing all day. A friend has pretty much the same use on his GS5 and usually has 20% more battery than me. It really seems like moto gave it such a small battery on purpose to direct peoply to the Nexus 6.
- Software has it's fair share of quirks. Moto screen has a small glitch when you interact with it. It is minor but is does bug me. Voice control has a real hard time getting some of the commands straight. The phone recognizes the commands but moto doesnt catch them. I have to say them 3 or 4 times to get it to work.
- I really wish moto packed a better headphone with it or no headphone at all. It is better than the one before but it really doesnt say much, since it was was total C-R-A-P. Construction is poor, sound is questionable and volume is incredibly low. Just avoid it if you can.
Other than that I really believe this is the best high end fone you can get down here now without having to fork over R$2000 or getting a outdated phone. Let me know if you have any other questions about it
Moto XT1097 for the win
Hello pacobahyba,
Thanks for your report, I'm on the same boat here, Brazilian Retail version, almost 30 days already. My last device was a Galaxy Nexus, over almost 3 years (That's how much a device usually last with me, that's what I expect from the MotoX).
---
Good things, i can add a few points:
* Camera: It have a good camera, overall. As a photographer i dont expect a phone to have a very neat camera, so MotoX didn't let me down so far.
* Size/Shape: Good grip on hands (Sometimes it's hard to use it with one hand, but not enought to don't like it), but also very comfortable in pocket, I know it's there but don't make me fell unconfortable.
* Very neat performance, as you said. Not even a lag, freeze, anything like that. Since I came from stock Android (Nexus device) I can say that I'm home here, and that's also awesome.
* Never used Moto softwares before, so I can't say about changes, only about how much i liked it, it's pretty awesome, but fells a little bit awkward on the street, also I can't make it works with the headphone speaker, not a problem, since I don't talk to the device on street.
* Battery: I'm very satisfied with it, last device was very poor on battery specs. I don't play games, but I'm always using GPS and Bluetooth, Spotify and Flacs, playing videos, email and web. You can add Skype and Hangouts with camera there, also Chromecast/Netflix and the Battery last till I get home to recharge it.
* Besides the fact Motorola made heavly saturated colors, screen is amazing.
---
Bad Things:
* Moto Voice takes too long to give an answer when it uses Google Now.
* Sometimes Moto Voice just don't work.
* Speakers are loud, LOUD, but not clear, not intense or 'live'. I would exchange the high volume to a more clear sound without a second thought. It's not Stereo (the top speaker only work with calls).
* No leds, not a big problem, but I used to use it a lot on last device, with Light Flow app.
* Power button fells like it will break anytime.
---
I really like it. It's far the best phone I got the hands on so far. I know it's only a Phone so most of the 'Bad Things' won't matter. I'm very pleased with the choice I made (I was about to replace my Galaxy Nexus to Nexus 5) and I hope it last for at least 30 months. I really liked the Motorola apps, and I would be very happy with more apps choice in the future.
Best regards (and sorry about the typos).
Just got mine today! Good to see Brazilian folks here.
Do you guys bought a case and a screen protector? I'm having a hard time finding it in Brazil :/
I'm really loving this phone, the active display is what I think it's best on the phone so far. And the camera is really not that good, but I guess they can correct that with some software update. I bought a screen protector for mine, and should have bought a case as well, mine already took his first visit to the floor yesterday no major damage, but it got a little scratched on the corner...

Hi Paco!
I felt the same about the new MotoX.
Bigger screen, better camera, better construction, but the battery does not fit for heavy users.
Moto Voice doesn't work well, but I rarely use it (I think that talk to the phone is strange; people in Brazil see you like a weirdo).
And I still can't find cases for this phone. I got a hard case in my old MotoX. One month has passed and no hard cases for new moto (is it selling fine?!?!)

I'm in Brazil too, considering to buy.
root is a must for me... did you guys already root it, the XT1097 brazilian version is bootloader unlocked?
Options I'm considering:
Moto X 2014 (XT1097 BR) - Sounds it will be ok to root, with good dev community, I'm concerned with battery only
Moto Maxx - Huge battery, but looks like dev community will be really small, because the US version is Verizon locked
Nexus 6 - That's the one I really want, but no news so far about launch in Brazil, will it ever come?

Mine is the XT1097, and I got to unlock the bootloader and root it with no issues whatsoever. As for your options, me personally, I would just trade my Moto X for the nexus 6, that one is the is the real deal, even though I don't like the idea of having a 6 inch display, too big for my taste.
Sent from my XT1097 using Tapatalk
hey man sorry for the delay... I see what you're saying on your options. The way I see it you gotta be between N6 and moto x. I dont like the maxx design... they remind me of that dreadful razr line
I think it should come down to a few things:
Are you a phablet fan? Otherwise you're in for a hard cause cause that thing is a monster.
Are you ok with the price tag? I liked the price range from nexus devices before. I get that Google changed the philosophy and all that and I am fine with their reasoning, it's just not my thing. I truly see it coming out here on iPhone 6 price range, but it is ultimately your choice.
Can you wait? It just barely came out. We usually have a delayed window. Keep in mind that moto is having a hard time to keep up with the demand. It's not unreasonable to think we'll get it by jan.
All things considered, I like where you're heading anyway! Let menknow what you do!
Thanks for the replies guys.
I will be ok with the screen size and price on Nexus 6. Yeah, I expect it to be expensive, but I will probably not need an upgrade in a few years hopefully.
I'm in a hurry though, because my old Galaxy S2 is almost dead... since there's no target date for Nexus 6 in Brazil, I may have to get a Moto X 2014 instead.
I'm brazilian and was willing to buy this phone. BUT....thanks to this post, i think i 'm gonna wait more.
I think the Nexus 6 will be the best for what i want. It really pisses me a small battery autonomy.
I was a Note 2 user, and i get used to a big battery. Currently i'm with a S5 but not satisfied with the autonomy.
Note 4 is too much expensive, and that TW is too much boring right now.
I really thinking about N6, but there is not even a single mention about if it will be avaliable to us here in BR.

I think the Nexus 6 will be the best for what i want. It really pisses me a small battery autonomy.

Hey rafaelw,
I REALLY believe that the N6 will cost Note 4 money once it hits brazil, so try not to get your hopes up on that department.

I believe that at the launching it can be some high cost, but the Nexus line it's not the typically phone for the major BR population, making the price drop after some time. I never bought phones at the launching, I wait to drop it. The Note 4 is too much expensive, and the price drop is too much slow

Another question dude, what is the currently situation about Root and custom roms? Do you fell the need of them?
I don't know your historic with smartphones, but I'm at my 4th Android phone and one of the first things that I do in a new phone is to root it and search for custom roms.
(But the main reason to root is to freeze or uninstall crap softwares that came original installed, I don't think that Moto x have this problem).
Thanks

So, rooting is there but custom roms are not.
I am on my 6 android phone (had the sony x10, moto milestone 2, milestone 3, razr i, the original x and the new x). Before the original x I d root every single phone I had mainly for custom roms and better performance management so I think we are alike on that point
Now with that being said, since the original X I didn t see the need to root it. Performance was snappy from day one and it stayed that all all the way before I sold it. That baby was a beast. The new X feels the same to me. It is pretty much stock android feel and motorola software actually enhances the phone's usability without affecting the performance at all. I see that quite a few people have it rooted but, since most of my backup is done automatically using tasker and I store it on 2 different locations, I have very little to worry about
I couldn't wait anymore, got the XT1097 in FastShop.
Didn't root yet, the only thing I miss most is hibernating bad apps with Greenify... what do you guys do to tame apps that are insistent to start and consume cpu/mem/data all the time?
So I have the choice of either getting a Nexus 5 or a Moto X (2014) but on paper these two phones are pretty good, not much between them. I really don't know which to get. So for those of you who have used both or at least one of these devices, what are you opinions on them and which do you prefer? Hopefully this will help others too!
I'm mainly looking at these categories:
- General Usage
- Durability
- Accessories (I've noticed currently there's not that many screen protectors for the Moto X plus there being issues with tempered glass)
I original had the Nexus 5 but it broke. Really badly. The repearability of the Nexus 5 is not good and now my phone just no longer works. Should I stick to the same or try something new?
Why would you get a nexus 5 when the 6 is available? no matter what a phone is going to break if you don't take care of it. you don't need a screen protector the the moto x. the glass is nearly impossible to scratch since it's gorilla glass 3. take care of your phone and you won't have to worry about it breaking. other than that, there are over a thousand spec comparisons between the two phones on the web.

See I'm not all about specs and hardware, more about personal user experience with the device. Accidents happen, I took really good care of my Nexus 5 but it fell out of my hands because of someone else mucking about around me.
The Nexus 6 is way too big for me. I loved using my Nexus 5 and I would happily buy it again but the Moto X looks very appealing. I'm all about stock android so.
I currently own both, and now that I've gotten a Moto X 2014, i won't be going back.
The build quality alone makes it a better option. It FEELS so good in the hand, and that weight...UGH!! so nice.....
The Nexus 5 has only 1 leg up on the moto x, and thats qi charging. BUT, i'm thinking of getting a bluboon *spelling* receiver and trying that out...we will see.....
the moto takes better pics imho and has slomo recording!!
go with the X, you won't regret it....the battery life is the same and with 5.0 we will get project volt and won't need bigger batteries anyway....

This guy really nailed it for the main part. QI charging is deal breaker for some but I don't care. I don't mind plugging it in since I can use it while plugged in but if it has to sit in charger, I can't really use it comfortably. I've had multiple N5s since I enjoy stock Android but I keep going back to Motorola since they've added some very nice features to just bring that little extra that you flashed roms for.
Build quality, radio, reception, screen (IMHO), feel in hand, camera (slightly, not software) and loud speaker kill N5 any day. Moto X 2014 is not a perfect phone but LG build quality is the worst. Loud speaker and radio/reception on N5 is a joke IMHO.
When I had my 2013 moto x, I decided to try the Nexus 5. Bought it, it arrived, toyed with it for 5 mins, then promptly put it back in the box to sell it to a friend. I thought the 2013 X was better than the N5 off usability features alone. The 2014 X completely dominates the N5.
Better ergonomics
WAYYYYYY better speakers
Better reception
Customizable
Moto Display+Voice
The only thing the N5 has over the X is the well-calibrated LCD screen.

Totally forgot to mention the loud speaker... It's amazing how loud it really is. I also owned an M8 (hated sense) and Moto isn't "better" but it is really really close. Actually wakes me up when I need it in the morning.
Also, I have noticed that I am on LTE a lot more often on the Moto than I was with the N5.
I use the hand waving thing a lot more often than I thought I would as well.

Yeah, N5 would have such a hard time keeping up with LTE. I was mostly on HSPA+ because radio pretty much sucked.
I am coming from M8 as well and X may not have the same quality and deepness, but it's very very loud and surprises you at times for being just one speaker. Equalizer is pretty good by default on X as well.
I love the texting from Chrome browser and the X talking to me while driving. Oh and sleep mode saves your screen some energy by not turning it on at all if put screen down or in night mode. Software features are actually useful unlike gimmicks IMHO.

You've sold me with that. I guess I will just have to deal with no tempered glass etc. I mean I keep good care of my phones but I don't want to run the risk of accidental dropping like my Nexus 5, guess I'm going to have to. I'll just buy a phone sock or something
Only thing I'll miss from the Nexus 5 is the notification light (Moto Display is still cool but something about that LED gives it the edge) and Paranoid Android ROM but Android L seems perfect as it is right now. Also I have fairly small hands and the Nexus 5 was the PERFECT size. 2014 X isn't that much larger so it should be all fine! Many thanks!
I own both, and while they are both amazing phones, the Moto X is a pretty massive upgrade from the N5. Not necessarily in terms of speed (though the X is faster), just in terms of overall experience. I feel like the N5 is just a no-frills reference device (which technically it is, I guess) but the Moto X is the ultimate luxury smartphone. I have owned upwards of 20 different smartphones since 2009 including most of the major flagships, and never in my life have I held one this high quality before. The Moto X is the complete package, and I firmly believe it is the best smartphone ever made. The ONLY thing I wish it had was Qi charging but considering everything else the X has to offer, it's a minor compromise. You really can't go wrong with either phone, but my recommendation is the Moto X, without hesitation. Get the Pure edition if you can.

The Pure edition gives us an unlockable bootloader, because the AT&T and Verizon models are locked down. I'm not sure how it works across the pond though, as long as you can unlock your bootloader than you're golden.
Both are amazing, in my opinion the Moto X is the Nexus 5 2.0
Better specs all around (albeit nothing to write home about it), better battery life and touchless control its superb

I haven't ONCE missed root or any ROM since i got the Moto X. i was always flashing on my N5 to get the features that come with this phone out of the box.
We mentioned build quality, i honestly believe my Moto X is of better feel than the M8. The M8 always felt slippery and cold, this phone just feels good.
I also splurged and got the moto care for 80 more bucks. 3 replacement phones over the next 2 years for anything i warrant. I will take full advantage of that service i promise you.
Exactly my debate a month ago. I've got a thread on here someplace about it. It came down to price vs quality and customization. I got the .edu discount (alumni account), so the difference was about $125 on a 32 GB. At that, the X with a wood back was worth it to me. If $ are tight, I think the Nexus 5 is the best option. If $ are tighter than that, then the Moto G (we have a couple of those in our household as well).

I totally agree that the X feels nicer than the M8. I honestly wasn't all that impressed with the M8. It kinda gives off a "hey look at me, I'm metal" vibe without actually being all that nice. Like it's made out of aluminum just for the sake of being made out of aluminum, for bragging rights, if that makes sense. There just isn't anything special about it... and those godawful bezels, ugh. The Moto X on the other hand is just... elegant. It's very mature, and no part of its design is superfluous. I keep saying it and I'll keep on saying it- the Moto X is the nicest smartphone ever made.
On a side note, my friend just got the One E8 which is essentially just a polycarbonate version of the M8 and I like it a heckuva lot more than the M8. I think it looks nicer and feels nicer than its aluminum brother.
The Moto X is like a Nexus 5.5. Physically a big step up from the Nexus 5, feels premium. If the Nexus 6 size puts you off a great successor. Outside of a Nexus there is no other manufacturer that will truly give you a stock feeling. Is it worth the price to upgrade? Not for everyone, but I wouldn't have gone to any other handset.
The development on this phone may not kick off massively, which would be a shame, but I wouldn't force yourself to adapt to the Nexus 6 just because its a new Nexus device. I'd either stay on the Nexus 5 or choose a Moto X.
If big devices don't bother you though its Nexus 6 > everything else.
I moved from the even older nexus 4, huge jump for me but only in day two of using it and I'm really on the fence if this is right phone for me. But it is a nice stock feeling phone.

I'm on Nexus 4 and debating Moto X vs Nexus 5 (N6 size doesn't work for me).
I was leaning towards Moto X until I read your comment.
Why are you on the fence? What's not right about Moto X?

I had the nexus 5 and hated it. Had great specs but the cheapest design and actually stuttered a little bit with animations.. least favorite phone so far besides the s4. I'd go nexus 6 if the screen isn't to big for you[emoji12]
Well, I loved it initially ! Many sleepless nights and I was craving to have one for almost a month.
I understand the need to bring in better camera, better hardware, bigger screen and other better specs we all were craving for. Also, many people are crazy about it!
But, after using it for 2 days, I started thinking why google screwed up nexus 6 with SIZE and WEIGHT ! It is just too "BIG" and "HEAVY". It made my phone almost useless. I wish there was a nexus mini 6, which is lighter and smaller.
Being a nexus and google stock android maniac, I can't use any other cell phone but my nexus 5.
So, I am back to nexus 5. It does feel fresh with the lollipop update. And, I am happy about it.
I am ready to wait for one more year, hope google will pick the best one which is comfortable to use for all users next time !
P.S: It was just my experience and opinion. I am always an android lover. Don't BOMB me !

I can see how the size of a phone can make it useless to some people...but the weight shouldn't be relevant. A mere 5-6 years ago (and less) phones were FAR chunkier and far heavy, and we hand no choice cause that was all there was on the market.
To the OP....their are plenty of GPE phones out there that have awesome specs, and the screen size you want. No need to wait another year.
Wow, heavy? Really? I don't see it as heavy at all. Especially for the size. To each his own I guess, but maybe you should've given it a few more days. Hasn't even been a week yet.
If anything the phone is solid, not heavy, which I'm enjoying.... I was doing wrist curls for the past month so maybe that's why it's n not heavy to me

Seriously. You know he doesn't even lift.
Hey, it's cool man... I hear Tampax is going to enter the cellphone market soon. I'm sure it will be something slim and lightweight... j/k
Phone size is a preference. I have had a large phone for years and prefer it. I understand that Google lost a lot of fans by going to a large phone. And many of you think they "messed up". But Google literally won my business by making a large device. And I know I'm not alone. I had been resigned to putting up with touchwiz another year when I found out about shamu. Point is Google did not mess up just because you choose a different device. And its OK to not want a large phone just as much as its OK to like a huge device. That's why they put out the whole be together not the same campaign.
Different strokes for different folks, I guess. I went from the rather diminutive 2013 Moto X to the Nexus 6 and I certainly have no regrets. It's big, yes, but after a few days with it, I'm very happy with my choice. So much easier to type on it than my X. Happy with the performance, screen resolution, camera. Front camera is kinda weak compared to my HTC M8, but love the rear shooter. Happy all around. Gets fantastic service, too. Even better than my Moto X, and that thing got excellent signal.
I can see where you are coming from. Would have definitely been nice is they released a smaller version.
For me though I was able to acclimate to the size rather quickly. Did not seem all that big and I never noticed the weight being an issue.
Ok, I still want mine. Good bye.
Ian B
Is it OK in the pocket?
Nexus 6 rawks! I like the bigness, matches my hands and everything. Good luck mate!
Disclaimer: my opinion.
Nah man, do not agree. At first I was hesitant to preorder as I thought it was too big. Then, I switched to Verizon and was forced to go to 6+ over iPhone 6 as it was on backorder. That made me realize that it was not too big lol. And comparing it to iPhone, you get better feel in the hand, more display, and perfect weight. I can't see myself going to a smaller display.
I actually was told by someone who wantes to hold me n6 that is was lighter then theyd imagine by it size, plus coming from the m8, didnt really feel a difference in weight.
Maybe you should look into the Moto X 2014.
Good luck with your next choice.

The size of the Nexus 6 is not for everyone. I do think however you did not use the phone long enough and give it a chance. Just like the Samsung Galaxy Note series, a high percentage of people whom really give the phone a chance for a reasonable amount of time end of keeping the "note" and stating later "everything else besides the note is too small".
There are some that will never like the size of phablets and subscribe to the life long Steve Jobs diatribe that phones and tablets are separate devices, in which apple as a company changed their tune later.
I do think your making a mistake though. IBM predicted years ago that the future of the computer would be a PC "walkman like device". The calaboration of computer, phone, and music Walkman device are in the phablet. You need to have a big enough screen to have a true "mobile desktop experience" in a phone. Really, that experience envisioned is with 6 inch sized phones and higher. It won't stop here there will be 6 inch + phones with smaller bezels and those that fold/bend. This is the vision that the IBM had. Lenovo now being the owners of IBM and Motorola.

Wouldnt you just call that the MotoX?
Went to Sprint today to check out the demo. We have two phones that are eligible for upgrade, and I've been looking at the Nexus 6 for months. I figured the size would be fine for me, but I wanted my mom to see the phone and see if she wanted to upgrade to the N6. We both currently have Note 2's, and since I'm the one that always has to troubleshoot when she's got phone issues, I like to try and get the same phones so I know exactly what might be going on when there is an issue. I kind of thought the size would be bigger then the Note 2, but having the phone for two years I guess we're just used to it and the N6 didn't seem bigger at all in the hand for either. Felt like the Note 2, just with more screen space. Seeing the pics and unboxing vids does no justice for the N6. The phone is bad ass in person. As for the weight, I checked out the Note 4 just to compare, it felt much heavier then the N6. Not sure if it's the curved back, but it felt much lighter then all the other phones that size. Both of us walked out and agreed the phone was kick ass and the one to upgrade to. Would have gotten them today, but waiting till Black Friday, just in case there might be some deal at Best Buy. Doubt there will be, but one more week isn't much to wait and see. Plus I can get a couple cases on the way during the wait. And actually, after seeing the phone, the curve on the back didn't seem as curved as I thought it was, so hoping that bumper that Rhino Shield is working on will be all it needs. I questioned the curve and how it could work right, but it looks like the bumper could work without a hard plastic back to it.
