So I have the choice of either getting a Nexus 5 or a Moto X (2014) but on paper these two phones are pretty good, not much between them. I really don't know which to get. So for those of you who have used both or at least one of these devices, what are you opinions on them and which do you prefer? Hopefully this will help others too!
I'm mainly looking at these categories:
- General Usage
- Durability
- Accessories (I've noticed currently there's not that many screen protectors for the Moto X plus there being issues with tempered glass)
I original had the Nexus 5 but it broke. Really badly. The repearability of the Nexus 5 is not good and now my phone just no longer works. Should I stick to the same or try something new?
Why would you get a nexus 5 when the 6 is available? no matter what a phone is going to break if you don't take care of it. you don't need a screen protector the the moto x. the glass is nearly impossible to scratch since it's gorilla glass 3. take care of your phone and you won't have to worry about it breaking. other than that, there are over a thousand spec comparisons between the two phones on the web.

See I'm not all about specs and hardware, more about personal user experience with the device. Accidents happen, I took really good care of my Nexus 5 but it fell out of my hands because of someone else mucking about around me.
The Nexus 6 is way too big for me. I loved using my Nexus 5 and I would happily buy it again but the Moto X looks very appealing. I'm all about stock android so.
I currently own both, and now that I've gotten a Moto X 2014, i won't be going back.
The build quality alone makes it a better option. It FEELS so good in the hand, and that weight...UGH!! so nice.....
The Nexus 5 has only 1 leg up on the moto x, and thats qi charging. BUT, i'm thinking of getting a bluboon *spelling* receiver and trying that out...we will see.....
the moto takes better pics imho and has slomo recording!!
go with the X, you won't regret it....the battery life is the same and with 5.0 we will get project volt and won't need bigger batteries anyway....

This guy really nailed it for the main part. QI charging is deal breaker for some but I don't care. I don't mind plugging it in since I can use it while plugged in but if it has to sit in charger, I can't really use it comfortably. I've had multiple N5s since I enjoy stock Android but I keep going back to Motorola since they've added some very nice features to just bring that little extra that you flashed roms for.
Build quality, radio, reception, screen (IMHO), feel in hand, camera (slightly, not software) and loud speaker kill N5 any day. Moto X 2014 is not a perfect phone but LG build quality is the worst. Loud speaker and radio/reception on N5 is a joke IMHO.
When I had my 2013 moto x, I decided to try the Nexus 5. Bought it, it arrived, toyed with it for 5 mins, then promptly put it back in the box to sell it to a friend. I thought the 2013 X was better than the N5 off usability features alone. The 2014 X completely dominates the N5.

The only thing the N5 has over the X is the well-calibrated LCD screen.

Totally forgot to mention the loud speaker... It's amazing how loud it really is. I also owned an M8 (hated sense) and Moto isn't "better" but it is really really close. Actually wakes me up when I need it in the morning.
Also, I have noticed that I am on LTE a lot more often on the Moto than I was with the N5.
I use the hand waving thing a lot more often than I thought I would as well.

Yeah, N5 would have such a hard time keeping up with LTE. I was mostly on HSPA+ because radio pretty much sucked.
I am coming from M8 as well and X may not have the same quality and deepness, but it's very very loud and surprises you at times for being just one speaker. Equalizer is pretty good by default on X as well.
I love the texting from Chrome browser and the X talking to me while driving. Oh and sleep mode saves your screen some energy by not turning it on at all if put screen down or in night mode. Software features are actually useful unlike gimmicks IMHO.

You've sold me with that. I guess I will just have to deal with no tempered glass etc. I mean I keep good care of my phones but I don't want to run the risk of accidental dropping like my Nexus 5, guess I'm going to have to. I'll just buy a phone sock or something :laugh:
Only thing I'll miss from the Nexus 5 is the notification light (Moto Display is still cool but something about that LED gives it the edge) and Paranoid Android ROM but Android L seems perfect as it is right now. Also I have fairly small hands and the Nexus 5 was the PERFECT size. 2014 X isn't that much larger so it should be all fine! Many thanks!
I own both, and while they are both amazing phones, the Moto X is a pretty massive upgrade from the N5. Not necessarily in terms of speed (though the X is faster), just in terms of overall experience. I feel like the N5 is just a no-frills reference device (which technically it is, I guess) but the Moto X is the ultimate luxury smartphone. I have owned upwards of 20 different smartphones since 2009 including most of the major flagships, and never in my life have I held one this high quality before. The Moto X is the complete package, and I firmly believe it is the best smartphone ever made. The ONLY thing I wish it had was Qi charging but considering everything else the X has to offer, it's a minor compromise. You really can't go wrong with either phone, but my recommendation is the Moto X, without hesitation. Get the Pure edition if you can.

Pure Edition? I'm assuming that's one directly from Motorola? (I'm the UK by the way! I know about American companies like Verizon taking ages to push updates and ugly branding etc)

The Pure edition gives us an unlockable bootloader, because the AT&T and Verizon models are locked down. I'm not sure how it works across the pond though, as long as you can unlock your bootloader than you're golden.
Both are amazing, in my opinion the Moto X is the Nexus 5 2.0
Better specs all around (albeit nothing to write home about it), better battery life and touchless control its superb

I haven't ONCE missed root or any ROM since i got the Moto X. i was always flashing on my N5 to get the features that come with this phone out of the box.
We mentioned build quality, i honestly believe my Moto X is of better feel than the M8. The M8 always felt slippery and cold, this phone just feels good.
I also splurged and got the moto care for 80 more bucks. 3 replacement phones over the next 2 years for anything i warrant. I will take full advantage of that service i promise you.
Exactly my debate a month ago. I've got a thread on here someplace about it. It came down to price vs quality and customization. I got the .edu discount (alumni account), so the difference was about $125 on a 32 GB. At that, the X with a wood back was worth it to me. If $ are tight, I think the Nexus 5 is the best option. If $ are tighter than that, then the Moto G (we have a couple of those in our household as well).

I totally agree that the X feels nicer than the M8. I honestly wasn't all that impressed with the M8. It kinda gives off a "hey look at me, I'm metal" vibe without actually being all that nice. Like it's made out of aluminum just for the sake of being made out of aluminum, for bragging rights, if that makes sense. There just isn't anything special about it... and those godawful bezels, ugh. The Moto X on the other hand is just... elegant. It's very mature, and no part of its design is superfluous. I keep saying it and I'll keep on saying it- the Moto X is the nicest smartphone ever made.
On a side note, my friend just got the One E8 which is essentially just a polycarbonate version of the M8 and I like it a heckuva lot more than the M8. I think it looks nicer and feels nicer than its aluminum brother.
The Moto X is like a Nexus 5.5. Physically a big step up from the Nexus 5, feels premium. If the Nexus 6 size puts you off a great successor. Outside of a Nexus there is no other manufacturer that will truly give you a stock feeling. Is it worth the price to upgrade? Not for everyone, but I wouldn't have gone to any other handset.
The development on this phone may not kick off massively, which would be a shame, but I wouldn't force yourself to adapt to the Nexus 6 just because its a new Nexus device. I'd either stay on the Nexus 5 or choose a Moto X.
If big devices don't bother you though its Nexus 6 > everything else.
I moved from the even older nexus 4, huge jump for me but only in day two of using it and I'm really on the fence if this is right phone for me. But it is a nice stock feeling phone.

I'm on Nexus 4 and debating Moto X vs Nexus 5 (N6 size doesn't work for me).
I was leaning towards Moto X until I read your comment.

I had the nexus 5 and hated it. Had great specs but the cheapest design and actually stuttered a little bit with animations.. least favorite phone so far besides the s4. I'd go nexus 6 if the screen isn't to big for you[emoji12]

I continue to hear only good things about the Moto X and I'm tempted to pick one up at the $350 sale price. I currently have a Droid DNA (which is on par with the 2013 flagships) running Sense 5 - it works well but has it's annoyances, however I don't know if it will actually be a good idea to upgrade from. My thoughts/concerns:
-Size: Going from a 5" 1080p screen to a 4.7" 720p screen is going to be a big change, especially since the Moto X screen is actually about 4.3" with the on screen buttons. However, I've found the DNA to be too big sometimes (especially with the power button on the top, it's my biggest annoyance) so I may like the slight downsize.
-Camera: The DNA takes great pictures, and I love the Sense 5 camera. The Moto X camera however sounds like its below average, so this would be a clear downgrade.
-Wireless Charging: Having a Nexus 7 and DNA I rarely plug anything in anymore. I've got 3 chargers between my house and office so this would be another adjustment with the Moto X.
-Root: I don't care abut an unlocked bootloader but I need root (TiBu, Greenify, Tasker). I wasn't planning on getting the DE (too late now anyways) but the hassles of getting root with each update worries me.
Those things are my biggest concerns. I'm very much interested in Moto X's software features and quick updates though (among other things). I've thought about just getting a Droid Maxx (keep the big screen and wireless charging) but not for $150 more and slower updates.
Also, I'm the kind of person that switches phones about every 6 months (buying/selling used usually). I get bored or I find something that annoys me about a device. The DNA's resale value is dropping real quick (from $300 a few months ago to just over $200 now) so the sooner I sell the better probably.
So, for anyone that's come from an S4, One, G2, etc - do you regret it? Can anyone sway me one way or another?
I came from an s4 and don't regret it in the least. Actually, I do miss the ir blaster a bit, but that's it.

I came from an S4 and G2. I honestly don't miss those devices. They're definitely powerhouses but the Moto X is just an all around better device...for me at least. The difference from 1080p to 720p isn't that noticeable since the ppi is still high on the X. If you compare both side by side and zoom in on stuff then yea you're bound to notice something. The camera is pretty good. You can check out the picture thread in this section to see some pics. I have the dev edition so rooting is easy but I'm sure the regular ones will be rootable with future updates especially if more devs get this device with the sale.

Im very happy with Moto X. I have had (this year) Note 2, Razr Maxx, SG4, HTC ONE and LG G2. Size and features are what did it for me.
I think the two biggest things that are likely to disappoint people coming from a flagship phone to the Moto X are going to be the camera (mediocre, especially in low-light settings) and the AMOLED display (extremely saturated, this is moreso going to be the case for people coming from LCD screens like the Nexus 5).
I came from a Nexus 4, to a Nexus 5 for almost a couple week, then to the Moto X. I am loving it so far. Like you, I've been so used to wireless charger and this is probably the only feature I kind of miss.
Size was actually one of the deciding factor for me. Nexus 5 was slightly too big for my taste. The size and the build quality makes this a really nice phone to use.
Camera is not so great on the Moto X, but is more than what I need. The Nexus lines never had great cameras, either. Not sure how it compares to a DNA.
Ultimately for me, active notification and Moto Maker are the features that make me switch to Moto X. Maybe it should for you, too?
I bought a DE yesterday and I currently have a One. I am anxious to see as well as the One can sometimes be too large for my liking especially with the power button on top. I am thinking the screen and the aluminum body are going to be the only things I miss - the dev support on the One has been great lately too though.
I came from a Note 3, and the software on the X is just so much better. I always feel like I'm using Gingerbread when I use Touchwiz, but the X is a very nice 4.2.2 experience. The Active Notifications are wonderful as well!
I think the thing to remember about the X, is that you must look past the hardware. Its hardware really isn't great, but the software is like a testbed of all of Google's neat ideas that they didn't want to test in the Nexus line.
I ordered one of the VZW developer versions yesterday, and I am excited to switch from my GS3. However, I do hope development picks up after this sale because I can't seem to find much for this phone.
But rest assured that out of the box, due to the AOSP nature of the phone, it will feel smooth and speedy compared to many other flagship phones.

I am kinda of afraid to switch from s4. I am on custom ROM 4.3 and kernel with all the goodies and tweaked screen colors to my liking. Camera quality is obviously good, screen is near perfect, some development in forum, battery is very good on S4, everything works with 0 bugs.
I like moto x design and feel, don't care about specs, but I do care about those too blue or too yellow screens and as well as camera quality. Some photos I've seen at link above of moto x are horrible.
I came to the X from Nexus 4/5 because of the common sense design, and I am hopeful the industry takes note of its success. It seems most phones are going out of their way to employ technology solutions that are looking for a problem.
Design the phone to fit your hand, duh! Ever picked up a Samsung device?
We pull these out and turn them on a hundred times a day... one button at the top right to do this is silly. And voice commands are great, but if you have to pull out your phone and turn it on to execute them... well, you get my point.
And while we should all keep phones locked when out and about, having to always enter your pin is tiresome. Kudos to Apple fingerprint scanner, but trusted Bluetooth and nfc is even more convenient.
And I don't use my phone for photography... I have an slr around my neck when I want to take pictures. To me, phone cams are for capturing a moment you weren't planning on, and hence need to do it as quickly as possible.
These are the common sense issues the Moto X addresses that other phones don't. Hopefully the X2 will address even more.
Yes, I will miss some aspects of the Nexus 5, but I don't use any of those a dozen times a day. Wireless charging is probably the most missed. I am done with the spec race, and want a phone that works better.
While you can have a cool titanium and composite hammer, if it is not weighted effectively for the task of driving nails, it's of less use than an old steel one.
I came from a G2 and before that a S4. I don't miss the S4 one bit, I do like the G2 like its knock knock feature and its form factor is nice (big yeti hands). But other than that I don't miss either of the phones over the Moto X. I will be ordering a Moto X DE today or on the 9th so my wife can get the Moto X I currently have and I get a DE device. She is currently using the S4 and before that she and I were GNex users. She is liking the S4 but she was instantly drawn to the Moto X the evening I picked it up from the VZW store.
The display on the S4 was nice to me. The G2 is just plain sexy and blew away the S4 IMO. The Moto X screen is nothing to laugh at. I do like the G2 display over the Moto X but not enough to make it a show stopper.
The form factor of the S4 was not bad, the size was not a factor with it, the same with the G2. I did like the G2 over the S4 as it felt not as cheap. The Moto X form factor and build quality puts Samsung and LG to shame. The Moto X feels solid, they went back to their roots on this one. Makes me feel like I got the awesomeness of the Droid 1 and the Droid X and not the joke quality of the Bionic. I am not afraid of the Moto X might break when I hold it like I did the S4.
Speed wise.. The S4 blew my GNex out of the water, very fast and once I put CleanROM, Eclipse, or CM 10.2 on it the slight home stutter of the horrible TouchWiz launcher was gone. The G2 to me made the S4 feel sluggish and just not as spunky as it should be. With the G2 I am pretty much stock of the factory software but I did root it to debloat it and to also use G2 Xposed on it for the proper button placement that I like.
The Moto X is holding its own and I feel it is able to run against the G2 with everything I do in a days time. It is also able to do the gaming I like with no issues what so ever. Now if you do testing and all that then you will not see any of this based on those numbers. But if you actually use the device you will see it is not an issue.
The camera on the Moto X compared to the S4 is good. Comparing it to the stock camera on the G2 I feel the Moto X beats the hell out of it. Now with the Camera MODs for the G2 that are out then I will say the G2 is better way better. Comparing the Moto X camera to the N4 and I feel the N4 is better. But to be honest if I want a good picture then I will ask my wife to use her DSLR camera and take the picture for me. but for a camera phone it works. My smartphone camera-fu is not as strong as most but I might as well not even enter the race if you want me to talk camera with you. But for a typical user I can take a good picture and it does its job. Compare my camera shots to my wife camera shots using the same hardware and she beats me every time. Her take on the smartphone cameras are they are good for when you need a quick pic here and there but she prefers to take pictures with her DSLR camera over anything else.
You will not miss your phone when you switch to the Moto X. I am loving the near stock of Android on this device and I do like some of the features from Moto like the assist, trusted devices, active notifications, and the Motorola connect which replaced airdroid for me. Motorola is back to doing things right so far with the Moto X. Battery life is great with the Moto X as I am a pretty heavy data user with streaming media, web browsing, XDA, Reddit. I do about 10-60+ minutes of calls a day along with checking multiple gmail/email accounts. Screen is on 2+ hours everyday and I can go a full day on one charge and have just a pinch left over. With the GNex it was only possible with 3 extra batteries or a plug. The S4 could almost last the day but needed some power loving during lunch. The G2 could last till I got into the car and plug it in at the end of the day for me. The Moto X as I stated does last through my work day without the need of a charger near me as long as I don't go over a 12 hour work day with 2-3 hours in the car for driving to and from work. I am going to pick up one of the Moto battery packs as it is slim and doesnt take up a lot of room for those few days I go past 12hours.

Thanks for the responses everyone. I'm going to stop by the Verizon store today to play with one but I'm thinking I'll just try and get one tomorrow during the sale. If for some reason I really don't like it, I can always return it or sell it for near cost. Kind of makes me wish I got the DE yesterday so I wouldn't have any root worries, but I don't need the extra 16GB and I'm looking forward to having a custom designed phone. The community has always prevailed anyways.

although i am surprised you say N4 camera was better then Moto X, I tought N4 wasn't good at all compared to S4. I am not a fan of taking pictures with phone, but all my N4 pictures went straight to trash while some S4 pictures are keepers for sure.
I'd say the Moto X camera is between the N4 and N5 personally. Moto X camera is inconsistent and produces more grainier photos than N5 in my usage.

i really think part of the reason there's less development is that the phone is nearly perfect out of the box. I got my dev x before any sales and was looking for any reason to return it and couldn't find any
Well I just found out touchless controls don't work if you use a lock pattern or pin. So that's kind of a bummer. But I really liked how the phone felt in the store, and with free returns its pretty much a no risk chance to try it for 2 weeks.
Came from a DNA myself and an very pleased with my X. I'm already looking forward to a second-generation model. That said, the only thing I miss from my DNA was the burst mode picture capture which is replicated in this phone's software but not implemented as well.
I can from a DNA and a LG G2 and honestly, the only thing I really miss is the wireless charging. I still use my DNA from time to time (recently giving it to my bro since he broke his windows phone) and the screen is giant compared the moto x but for day to day use, its not noticeable.
I have an Samsung S5 right now and have been tempted to pick up a Moto X. I would prefer the 32GB but you can't even order them online at this time so was thinking of 16GB at AT&T store. I can freeze the bloatware so not worried about that.
My main hesitation is I can't figure out what I'm really gaining from my S5. Screen is about the same, same CPU, same RAM, camera on S5 is better, bigger battery on S5, software is better on X, build quality is better...
So it sort of comes down to better build quality and software. Everything else would be the same or not much different.

I'm on the same boat. I have an unlocked S5 16gb version. I got it in hopes that the S5 google edition would be released and I would simply convert it. Totally bummed because that never happened and I'm used to Google edition or Nexus phones. The S5 is riddled with constant lag across the UI and popups everywhere. Also the bloat on the S5 is amazing. I turned off most of the apps and found that this caused errors on other apps I couldn't disable, must be due to some dependencies. So I decided to go with Moto X, which is still currently being built and I'm expecting to receive on 10/8.
Some things I'll probably miss include the bigger battery (S5 easily lasts me all day with heavy use), SD card slot (had an extra 64GB for music and pics), and the IR blaster which I used to control my TVs or simply prank people :laugh:
But I'm willing to overlook all of the above since I'll be getting a better software experience, something I miss from all of my previous nexus phones and my S4 GPE.
I just came from a Galaxy Note 3 Developer Edition (running CM11) to the Verizon Moto X.
When you consider the unlockable bootloader, 3gb of RAM, and screen size, and S pen, the N3 DE has some advantages on paper vs the X.
I'm not trying to justify anything, nor convince anyone else to change.
My needs changed, somewhat, in terms of size, and I needed something just a little smaller. At 5.2", the new Moto X was about right for me. I would have not even considered changing if the X did not have stock AOSP, and such outstanding reviews.
So far, I am not disappointed with the X. But it is definitely not a competitor of the Note Series.
It is an outstanding device, though for someone who wants stock AOSP, and a very fast, smooth responsive OS.
I made this exact switch this past weekend. The S5 is a great phone, but I simply can't resist the combination of stock android and Motorola's enhancements. I love the look, feel, and fluidity of the Moto X, and the front facing speakers are wonderful (I stream a lot of radio at work). I really did enjoy the S5, and I will miss the screen and camera there, but overall I'm really enjoying the Moto X and am happy with my decision to switch.
The 32 GB is available again. If you want a white front those are delayed. I just built one (just for fun, pure edition) a little while ago.
I'll be getting the Verizon version tomorrow and I have the S5. I'll see if its worth the switch, if not I'll send it back.
I got an update yesterday night, and my new customized Moto X arrives tomorrow morning! Good thing I work from home tomorrow so I'll have it up and running in no time! Pretty excited!

It just doesn't have that wow factor. For me it's just a bigger screen. They're both snappy and fluid. I'm not seeing anything yet that says I'm a keeper. Is there something that you or others have seen or read that makes it stand out?
I disagree (just my opinion). I'm a phone hopper. I get the latest and greatest as soon as they come out (tablets included) and besides the battery life, which isn't the worst in the world by any means, this is hands down my favorite phone to date. My last 5 phones were the One Plus One 64g, Oppo N1 CM edition, Galaxy S5, Nexus 5, M8 and Note 3 (that's 7). I personally wouldn't go back to ANY of them from this years Moto X. It's really all about preference. I like stock android with a few bells and whistles. And the bells and whistles that Motorola has sprinkled in work flawlessly and I actually use. I'm not dogging Samsung, but the first thing I do when I get one of their devices is turn every single useless gimmicky crap off and put a Google Now launcher and Google Keyboard on it. I also have the Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 LTE with phone capabilities (to troll some people when making phone calls lol) and did all of what I said above to it before I installed anything. I hate to compare Motorola to Apple because the iphone and iPad bores the hell out of me, but Motorola paired their hardware and software as well as Apple does for the user experience. I prefer this phone over the red Nexus 5 and I'm a Nexus head. Just my two cents and my preference. If you're looking for a phone with zero lag, a beautiful screen, nice looking build, front facing firing speaker (which is dam loud BTW) and just an all around dam near perfect experience using it, then get the Moto X. If you're more concerned with battery life, removable battery, better camera and ALL the bells and whistles Samsung pours in then stick with the S5. The S5 is a great phone! And SD card support and IR blaster. Samsung's awesome.. I just prefer this Moto X.

Since you have had so many phones could you please compare the one-handed usage experience between the M8, S5, and the Moto X (2014)? How would you rank them in that aspect?
I made the switch and while I am overall happy, I am very disappointed in the way that the Moto X handles drops. The GS5 is a beast and can handle abuse butI had a small spill last night that would've left the GS5 with nothing more than a scratch, however my X got a quadruple crack at the top left corner that extended all the way across the screen. And then magically a new crack formed this morning at the bottom COMPLETELY out of nowhere. This phone is great but it's SUPER FRAGILE.
i think the best way to say it is if you use the few features that moto has put on their phone, then you will have a much better experience over the gs5. other than that... its just a phone. there is something to be said for the beauty of the leather backs also.
I have used but not owned an S phone since the first generation (Epic with keyboard, great for its day). I use a Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet and a Moto G phone at the moment. Everything about the Samsung experience is some window dressing hanging off of android. I really like the note, but all of the touchwiz junk added to the device is irritating. With Motorola, it is all clean. Where they add, they do so through apps, so there is better control. On my G, I changed to the Nexus experience launcher, and the difference from the one packaged with the phone is almost imperceptible - I just gained a swipe to a screen of cards. The S5 and 2014 X are so technically similar, it will come down to if you like the Samsung experience or want closer to Nexus.

It's not supposed to be imo, they are two different class of device. I think the Shamu will be more comparable, even then it's not designed with stylus in mind I think. The note is pretty much on it's own until a real stylus phone competitor come along.

I have two questions for you, because you have used other phones, so you will be able to tell better, firstly, is the camera really improved from last year's X? And secondly how much Screen On time are you getting with normal usage?
I personally am looking for a phone to upgrade from my 2013 X, and I just can't find anything worthy!
S5: Great hardware, bearable design, brilliant display, very good camera, but TouchWiz, so no way.
M8: Camera. And I hate all aluminium build too.
Z2: Self crackling body! Also screen to body ratio isn't really great!
G3: LG's UI is no better than TouchWiz, maybe slightly better but it's still awful. But fantastic design, and OIS!
And then there's the X 2014: Extremely over saturated display. Leather back has questionable durability I suppose (and when leather is available it's impossible to choose something else, for me at least). I am highly doubtful about the camera quality. 32 GB variant is still not available in my country and 16 GB without an SD card slot is unbelievable in 2014. But polished UI, and the overall UI experience is near Nexus level.
I played with the Moto X in a store for a while and came away unimpressed. Camera seems so so unless you force HDR on. Screen seems over saturated and no way to adjust like on Samsung. Build quality is nice for sure and software seems nice and stock. I really wanted to get this phone but the smaller battery, lesser camera makes it hard to switch. I also have a wireless charging back on my S5 so I'd loose that and I have wireless chargers everywhere around my house. I don't think I'd honestly use most of the Moto software either especially since my Moto 360 gives me glance able notifications already and remote voice when phone is off.

The ergonomics of the Moto X 2014 for one handed use smoke the M8 and S5. Motorola spent some time holding this sucker because it's VERY natural one handed for me. I would put the M8 in second place because of the curved back, but the aluminum is slippery as hell and then the S5. The S5 doesn't slip in your hand, but doesn't feel as natural as the Moto X does. This is just my experience though. Everyone holds their phones differently. My wife texts on her Note 2 with her left thumb and right pointer finger and it makes me mental lol.

The camera is without a doubt better than last years Moto X and is fine for a pull out of your pocket shooter. It's perfectly fine for what I need it for and I own a restaurant and take a lot of pics of food for our social media. And I'm a bad person to ask about screen on time because I keep my screen on 100% 24/7 (I'm always near a charger). I haven't tested it consistently, but with heavy use I would say 3-4 hours screen on time and that's power using it.

So if I could just barely reach the top left corner with my right hand on the S5, will it be easier to reach the same corner on the HTC One and even easier on the Moto X?
I'm really struggling with this one! Would really appreciate any other users' experiences between these two specific devices.
I have both sitting here and here are my initial thoughts:
--Thought the ergonomics of Moto X would be far superior to M8 due to weight and height, but actually doesn't feel any better.
--Cameras are a tough call: X has higher resolution (obviously, with 13MP vs. 4UMP) but M8 is quicker, and seems less "noisy" despite lower res.
--Active Notifications on X are a great concept, but I didn't realize they're motion-sensitive. I have it sitting on the armchair of the sofa next to me, and every time I move even a tiny bit, the screen comes to life. A bit annoying.
--Love the near-stock experience of the X. Also REALLY, REALLY love Trusted Bluetooth Devices on X! This is huge. (I know this can be done via 3rd party app on M8, but not if you utilize a pattern lock).
--Biggest gripe: the AMOLED screen on X has nice, deep colors, but I find the classic AMOLED discoloration (warm, yellowish-green tint) to be highly pronounced and IMO, really pollutes and detracts from the entire screen experience. Especially next to the M8.
Well, I don't have an m8 but have had an m7 for a long time. The only cons I can think of going from One to X are:
Only 1 front facing speaker
Amoled screen is amoled screen
Camera isn't as refined as far as ease of use, things like touching to refocus an area I still haven't figured out I just keep taking pictures...and agreed they can be grainy. But I'm one of those "I have an expensive DSLR that takes better photos" guys. If I'm going to a place I know I'll want photos of I bring it, if not the X will do.
No IR sensor for controlling things. Never really used it much for myself as much as I did to troll people at their houses messing with their stuff so that isn't a real con unless you like to troll.
Other than that the X is > in my opinion, but again I haven't had a 8 just a 7 not much changed so I still feel I can weight in on this.
Really just having moto assist is awesome. IIRC you can turn off moto display/actions (setting that handles hand gestures) so you don't have to worry about randomly triggering it while on the sofa.
The one thing I had to get used to was it acting like a notification LED. If I have one it will blink in and out slowly. Again it can be turned off but I'm growing to like it a lot.
Best part of all you already said. Near stock android experience!! With the promise of L shortly after it comes out! HTC will get L too but not til they reskin it, etc etc so X will get it faster and its still stock...soooooo...
I currently use the M8 and had the original X last year. I've owned the M8 since day one but am switching to the Moto X 2014. It has to do more with the originality as I'm customizing mine and the value adds Motorola builds into their software. Trusted Devices, Moto Voice and Display not to mention the Assist just were icing toppers. I believe this device well get software updates quickly like previous model and as recent outlets have demonstrated, the Moto is very durable. Battery life should be fine from posts I've seen here and my experience with the original X. I think Motorola does something with their governors to put the device in deep sleep quickly and ramp up CPU by anticipating with the sensors. It's a looker for sure and though I will sacrifice stereo speakers, Motorola for an exceptional job with call quality and service reception.
I have an M8 and my Moto X will be here in the next week hopefully. My main worries going to the X are worse speakers and worse battery life. Both are excellent on the M8.
Apparently the X speaker is almost on par with the M8's twin speaker setup. Very crisp sound and hardly any distortion. The reviews have all said the speaker is excellent.
I hate HTC Sense UI. It can be confusing and comes with extra stuff like Blinkfeed that I don't really like and am unable to uninstall.
Also the M8 gets updates much slower than the X.
The build quality is superior on the X. They did a bend test video comparing it against other models and they said the X had the best build quality.
M8's camera is slightly better though especially in low light. The aluminium body feels really nice too. If I had to buy one, the first thing I'd do is to get vanilla Android on it but it would void my warranty and require root.
I actually think Sense is the best Android UI out there. Even better than stock. More features, better design and more consistency over the whole thing. Maybe L will change that. However, the wait time for updates is probably gonna force me to sell my M8. Shame but 2.5 months just to get the 4.4.3 update is way too long.
I'll chime in. I had a m8 from release and while it is a great phone I prefer the x. I like the feel in my hand more. The way the glass curves into the phone is amazing and much MUCH less bezel on the x feels more polished. The camera from just testing for a week on the x is better but not miles better. Sound is on par a bit tinny but loud and full for the most part. I prefer a stock ui to a skin so that is a huge plus. Being on Verizon we don't have a nexus and honestly this is a real REAL close second. Now the bad about the x. Battery. On my m8 I could go an easy day. With the x I gotta be close to a charger at the end of a work day. I am a heavy user so your mileage will vary for sure.
How do the speakers fare between the two? That's the real question!

L is the actual release that has the UX very consistent, even more than KitKat. finally there is some consistency. i think L will look better than Sense when it releases

i agree with your thoughts on look and feel. i also like the slightly larger screen. I use 2 devices, the M8 for work and the Note 3 for everything else. i'm going to use the X as a work phone for 13-days and make a decision to keep my Note 3 or return the X. if the X came wth 64GB storage or had a microSD slot, i can say for sure the Note would be relegated to the phone drawer or eBay.
I found the M8 too tall, too heavy, and too loaded with both carrier (AT&T) and HTC bloat. The top power button was a PITA. I went back to my 2013 Moto X. The 2014 X has a bigger screen than the M8 in a more ergonomic, better looking, and smaller package.

Exactly the same feelings here, also spent most of my time between the M8 and new Moto X with the last Moto X. The One M8 is beautiful, as is Sense 6, but it just isn't nearly as pleasant to use.
I have a M8 and X 2013.
Screen in M8 is absolutely beautiful. From that I have heard X 2014 screen is not anywhere closer to M8. That might be a deal breaker for me.
I do absolutely hate sense. But sense 6 is not too bad actually. Sense have come a long way last few years. However, I still prefer AOSP launcher.
Battery on M8 is huge compared to X 2013. I dont read that X 2014 is anywhere close to M8. That might be a deal breaker as well.
Traded in my M7 for the Moto X. The X has much better radios.

The M8's speakers are the best of any smartphone on the market. Nothing else comes close in clarity and bass reproduction.
I guess it depends what is most important to you. The only M8 I would consider is the GPE, and the difference in price from the X would not be worth it.
I'm a bit late to this, but I thought I would throw in my 2 cents. For the record, I haven't received my new X yet (still being built) so the Moto X stuff I'm going to say will be based off reviews mostly and my previous 1st gen X. I have owned the M8, but I sold it to buy the Moto! If you're looking for awesome battery life, the M8 has the moto beat...I would finish the day (12-15hrs, moderate use, rooted using CleanROM) with 40-50% battery left. I have a feeling that the Moto won't get anywhere near that, nor do I even expect it to. I prefer OLED display much more compared to any other technology, the X is far superior to the M8 in that respect (personal opinion). I also had a problem with the backlight of my M8 becoming seperated from the LCD and causing a lot of bleed through on the bottom. Moto Voice and Active Display are far superior to the swipe actions you get with the M8, as far as ease of access of the phone. Sound quality of the M8 is amazing if you're an audiophile, both headphone and external speaker quality. The X has stock Android (almost), which is always a plus! You'll get L a lot sooner than HTC too! Also, from my experience, the duo camera on the HTC is pretty lack luster...I mean, it looks pretty neat physically, but the pictures it takes are mediocre at best. I'm not really expecting the Moto to be better, but I kind of expected more from the HTC.
If you are on Verizon, then at this point in I would get the m8. I am struggling with this now. I want a phone that I can switch roms and root. I have unlimited data so I am "stuck" with Verizon. I also like the m8 having a sd card slot where I can store 64gb worth of video /music for a $30 micro SD card. I don't like amoled, on my past phones I have had bad burn in. That all being said, I can't justifying buying a 7 month old device that had to last me 2 years. Hopefully Verizon wows me with something that is also unlockable or at least root able.
I've only briefly played with a 2014 X, and own a 2013. Now I own an M8....i have to say, the M8 blew me away and still does comparing to the 2013 X and N5. It's an amazing machine.
I can't compare everything to the 2014 X..... But they are probably close in many aspects.... Except battery life. I get 24 hours with 8+ screen hours on my M8....and from what I've seen in the battery thread here, the X doesn't touch it there.
One other thing that would make me lean towards 5he M8 is that development is booming. I doubt the X will get very busy comparatively.
So weigh your needs and wants and decide what is best for you. ?

Do you guys think there'll be a surge of orders from Nexus users who don't want to upgrade to a phone as big as the Nexus 6?
The new Moto X is the closest to a Nexus phone now (not phablet).
I think it's more likely that they stick with the Nexus 5 and pray Google comes back down to earth next year. I can't imagine that releasing a 5.9" phone as your one and only is going to pay off.
Yeah, I think the Moto X might pick of a few Nexus users (myself included) if the next Nexus device really only offers a 6" screen. But I suspect the reasons people want a Nexus device go deeper than that. The 1st Gen. Moto X got almost no development. If you want the roms and the hacks and all that, nothing is like the Nexus (and the Moto X is far from 2nd runner up, in terms of amount of development). So the near stock rom on the Moto X is a bit of a mirage. I'm still not sure I'm ready to make the jump and lose out on the development options (as well as the increased control and potential privacy offered by something like Cyanogen, over any manufacturer maintained rom).
Also the price on the Nexus has always been at least $100 lower than what a Moto X goes for. That's going to be a big deciding factor. Nothing talks like money.
But for people who aren't into the roms and just like the stock Android experience and don't care about price so much, maybe some of them will jump ship from the Nexus.
Severely doubt a 5.92" screen... 5.2" is more likely. Otherwise, the other released and confirmed specs look good. Just depends on battery life for me.

Literally everything is pointing to a 5.9" screen. No one is even acknowledging that a 5.2" device is even in the works any more. More likely the 5.2" phone everyone was talking about was the Droid Turbo.
Are the Nexus 5 and Moto X using the same size sim?

Yea cause I'm most likely one of them. I think the better speakers is what I want most. Weak speakers is the only thing I don't like about the Nexus
I hope I don't offend some people, but it seems a sizable percentage of Nexus people look down on the Moto X because they think it's an overpriced stock Android phone and think it cost too much. This is also true with OPO users. They think just because a phone use stock Android it automatically worth less. They don't take in consideration the difference in hardware design and add-on features. I just think installing CM on the X just take away all the great things about it.

They don't take in consideration the difference in hardware design and add-on features. I just think installing CM on the X just take away all the great things about it.

I was a Nexus 4 user, and why I got the Moto X is because my n4 was dying on me. Also, it's a nice phone, and the added hardware and software tweaks is worth enough for the price imo. I just want a clean stock experience, and that is why I like both the Nexus and Moto X

Nexus user here - owned every Nexus phone since the original. I've picked up a Moto X simply because this year's Nexus is too large. But I agree with the analysis here - the X is a good substitute, but it isn't quite the same thing and I hope we won't see any negatives from that. If we don't get L pronto I will be complaining all over Twitter :crying:
I bought the nexus 5 first and the moto x after but sold my nexus 5 and used the moto x exclusively. My wife got a new iphone so now i'm using her nexus 5.
Things i like since moving to the Nexus 5
larger crisper screen.
snappier performance (very noticable) whether in games, browsing, and using google now voice commands, everything just comes quicker and faster.
willingness to take more pictures because it has a better camera
Things i REALLY miss from the moto X
Active display. LED light from N5 doesn't cut it for me anymore
Touchless controls. I can't wake my phone from sleep. I don't use it much but when I want to I can't with the N5
--mics Moto's mics are awesome. I don't have to raise my voice like I do with the N5 when using the OK google command.
* on the N5 i have the google voice detection turned on for all screens and it drains the battery a little more. When plugged in, i leave the screen on so I have somewhat of touchless control.
Speaker - The moto's speaker is super loud compared to the N5.
Moto Assist - I use "AGENT" for the N5 but it's just not the same. The text reading and replying is very similar but with the Moto's mics the experience is better on the moto, but agent works very well as an alternative. Incoming calls aren't read out loud to you in Agent but they are in Moto Assist. AGENT relies on connecting to a trusted device in order for drive mode to come on while moto assist is able to detect when you're driving even w/o connecting to the trusted bluetooth device.
Battery life - i consistently get an hour more of SOT time with the moto over the N5 with just about the exact same type of usage.
There are a few other quirks between the two but these are the major ones for me.
The Moto X 2014 seems to blend both of these phones together and that's why I'm really wanting it, despite the battery life complaints. If it's equal to or greater to the moto x 2013 I'll probably get it. ESPECIALLY if the moto nexus doesn't have the moto tweaks. I doubt it does but i'm holding onto that small sliver of hope it does. These moto enhancements are very very very usual and i wish Google would bake these into Android but then Moto wouldn't be as unique any longer.

Dynamic Notifications is a nice substitute to use on the N5.
The N6/X at 5.9" is too big.
My take on it is that Motorola provides the nearest to Nexus experience (aside from GPE editions), with some extras in the sensors/software. The new Moto X is of the same hardware generation as the Nexus 5, so I think most will stick with the 5 unless they want a larger phone, and those will go to the 6 (which is about 1/2 generation newer if we believe the Snapdragon 805 [I almost called it a dragonball - now that will show my age in the mobile chip world] rumor). The phone jumpers will end up trying both the X and the 6, and may end up back at the 5.
I've been scratching my head between a Nexus 5 and Moto X to replace my work-supplied blackberry (company started to support Android in August) and think I am about to pull the trigger on the X. I thought about the M8 GPE, but holding both the new X and the M8 yesterday, the X definitely won out in-hand.

It's actually has some better features but it was ugly to look at from an angle since the n5 doesn't have the best viewing angles. Plus the turn screen on when pulling out of the pocket didn't work as well as the moto. Another feature I really like. Saves that power button.

Also, the battery drain will be a little bit more since the n5 screen is LCD. Having an active display like feature is made for amoled screens if you want to conserve battery

I'm considering the Moto X but I am waiting to see if a root method (an prefereably an easy way to unlock the bootloader like the first gen Moto X) appears for the non-pure edition devices. If that doesn't happen by January, I may just have to rock a stupidly huge device. Being able to root and customize/backup/automate to my heart's desire is the most important feature of a phone to me. Second is stock Android and fast updates (so obviously the Moto X meets that).
For those of us on Verizon who have suffered through the Galaxy Nexus' shortcomings (late / no updates) and the fact that the N4 and N5 weren't available on VZW. ---- the new MOTO X is really the only reasonable choice. Just ordered mine on Sunday to replace my ancient Galaxy Nexus. I'm hoping it is "pure enough". I do need someone to gain root though....

I know. Almost 3yrs at this point. But what was I gonna do? We have unlimited data on our two phones, and get a nice discount through my wife's work. And she travels in places like Kentucky and West Virginia so the Verizon coverage is a big deal. If it was just me I would've switched to T-Mobile already. So, considering that....what could I do but keep the Galaxy Nexus? I couldn't stand Samsung's crapware etc, and nothing else interested me. The new X is the first thing that seems like a real option.
I hope it lives up to my expectations.
My wife is still rocking a Motorola Droid Razr. If you think the Galaxy Nexus struggles to function now you should try her phone....she gave up before me, and she still uses a Blackberry Curve for work.
I recently purchased a Moto X Pure, and within 4 days knew I made the wrong decision. I'll list below the reasons I returned the Moto X Pure and why I'm buying the nexus 5x.
Why I'm return the Pure Garbage™:
•Lcd Lights- Distorts screen at night. Very obvious placement.
•Battery Life-poor. Gets too hot to use while charging (my next point)
•Heat- gets VERY hot with normal usage. Can't use while charging.
•Camera- 21mp? I get the same quality with my daughter's Nintendo DS..
•Weight- uncomfortably heavy + sweaty hand from heat + Rubber Back = disaster waiting to happen
•THICK..Call it a BBC. (Big Bulky Cellphone! Get your mind or the gutter!!)
Why I chose the Nexus 5x:
•Camera - 9mp less but 100x better. Laser autofocus.
•Screen - Both LCD, but after countless viewing reviews, the lights aren't eyesores.
•Fingerprint- so convenient!!
•Accessories- Nexus has a much larger following. Last 3 Motorola's were hard to find cases for.
•Updates- for obvious reasons
•BOOTLOADER- IMPORTANT!! If you had plans on getting to the Moto X Pure and unlocking it, you're sacrificing your warranty to do so. Google allows you to unlock your phone and keep your warranty.
What I lost out on in the switch:
- Removable memory - 32g is plenty. I have 128gb card in my G3 that doesn't get used
- 5.7 inch display - Too damn big anyways. The LG G3's 5.5" is pushing my upper limit as far as screens go. Learned on the Moto that 5.7" is a two hand phone, unless you have ogre hands.
Did anyone else choose between devices and get this one? If so what device and why?

That was one of the phones I was looking at as an upgrade from my first gen Moto X. The big factors for me were an unlockable bootloader, vanilla android, regular updates, and the ability to use any carrier. I was hoping for a 5" phone at the most, but 5.2" is okay so far. I don't think I could get used to a 5.7".
I wasn't expecting to care about the fingerprint sensor, but now that I have it, I love it! Was concerned about battery life, but no problem at all getting through the day so far.
The active display (whatever they call it) stinks on this compared to the X. Not a big deal, though, as I have a Pebble, and it's so quick to unlock.
I'm a huge fan of moto, having had the last two moto Xs. I could deal with the garbage cameras because it was nearly pure Google, the size was manageable, customization is boss, and it felt like a quality phone that didn't need a case to be sturdy as hell. The size of the nexus 6 and 6p is what deterred me from them. The 5x is a nice phone with some awesome features and decent battery life but the performance on my 2014 was better (subjectively) and I feel like I'm holding a phone that will break if it falls off the table. I've never felt the need to put a case on my motos unless I was going to the bar or camping, but this guy might need one 24/7
Came from a 2014 X PE as well. I would still be using it if it weren't for FI network. It's a shame that it doesn't work on it.
As far as the camera, the X got a bad rap. I had that thing taking some good shots. Never a complaint from me.
The display blows the Nexus 5x out of the water. So vibrant, punchy and draws your attention. So far everyone that's checked out my 5x immediately commented on how the display was grey, washed out compared to the moto X.
Moto X seemed faster at nearly every task compared to the 5x. This thing stutters all over the place. Moto has some really awesome features that once you use and lose, you miss...a LOT. attentive display, active notifications, chop flashlight, quiet time...moto really nailed it on the head.
Alas, I'll be keeping it. I went back to Nexus for FI, the battery is slightly better than the moto X which randomly shut off with anywhere from 8-20% still supposedly left.
Still love Nexus devices though, its a fun serviceable device.
OP is so incredibly biased in not even going to counter it. Mxpe is a wonderful device.

I sat on the edge about the pure for a while. A few big things just glared at me.
First, The physical appearance of the pure just didn't match the 5x. It looked chunky and the front flash was just gross.
Second, although the pure will probably get updates fine, the 5x will undeniably be the leader of the curve.
Thank you for making me more comfortable in my decision, the SD card reader was hard to give up for those easy onsite backups and space for a mini rom archive, but I think I can handle the 32GB restriction, especially since T-Mobile allows free unlimited lte play music now.
I used solely Nexus devices from June 2012-March 2015. When I shattered the screen on my N5 I chose a Moto X 2014 Pure due to the size of N6. I actually ended up really liking the Moto, and probably would have went with the 2015 Pure if it hadn't grown to 5.7. As is I went N5X simply due to size. I do miss a couple features of the Moto, but overall am happy with the Nexus. Fingerprint sensor ended up being very convenient, I originally didn't care, but now don't want to give that single feature up.
And I really hate delays in updates, after using Nexus for so long, it was really frustrating waiting for my year newer Moto to update weeks after my original N5 had already received the update with its shattered screen and all.
I was selecting between the MXPE and the 5X, and chose the 5X because:
No Motomaker in Canada (would've purchased from the US though, knew exactly what colours/options I wanted )
MXPE not available in Canada (would've purchased from the US though)
It's too big, and heavy - as is the 6P (MotoX 2013 was the perfect size, MotoX 2014 was reasonable)
Due to their recent behaviour, I no longer trust Motorola to release timely OS updates (hopefully Motorola proves these fears to be false)
Unlocking MXPE bootloader voids warranty
No device can match the kind of support (both official and third-party) that a Nexus device will receive
I really wanted to get the MotoX this year, but the 5X was the better choice for me, by far. I love the feel and industrial design of the 5X (the top and bottom bezels are definitely larger than they ought to be though), I'm getting great battery life, the camera is excellent & fast, and I know I'll be able to get updates from Google for at least two years, and quite possibly beyond.
I've got a four year old Galaxy Nexus flying on Lollipop (with stable Marshmallow on the way!) thanks to the development community. Specifically Ziyan in this case. Not that I plan on using the 5X four years from now.
Coming from MX 2014 Pure (Germany):
- hated delayed Lollipop update (we got it 2 months after the USA)
- battery was subpar
- camera was **** especially in low light conditions
+ cool moto features but almost all of them are now incorporated into M
+ size was perfect
+ moto maker
The smoothness of 5X is much better than on MX 2014 PE. Battery is holding much longer.
I was considering MX2015 but:
- no fingerprint scanner (motorola got screwed in 2014 by apple buying that fingerprint company but for the 2015 models there is no excuse not to have it!)
- too big
- unlocking voids warranty (at least in 2014 model I could flash custom rom and here I don't want to wait for the "official" M update because it will most probably come much later)
I was considering a Motorola phone and even recommended the Moto G to people who asked, but with the acquisition by Lenovo and the abandonment of the Moto E after promising updates, I can no longer consider or recommend Motorola phones. I am pretty sure it will only get worse as time goes on and Motorola becomes even less Google and more Lenovo. I heard they were laying tons of people off.
Plus being able to unlock and relock the bootloader on the Nexus 5X and still having warranty pushed me over the edge. Also guaranteed updates for two years, and a great developer scene is likely.
Moto x is a phablet just like the nexus 6. I didn't want a phablet so I didn't consider the moto x.

Agree 100%. My last two phones were Motos, and they would have been my first choice for a new one, but I was suspicious after the sale to Lenovo and the recent debacle around their updates sealed the deal for me. To my knowledge Moto still has not articulated a firm policy regarding software updates and security patches going forward (it's possible I missed something, though, since I stopped paying attention once I pre-ordered the 5X).
The Moto E situation was particularly egregious. I know that if you read the fine print they probably complied with the letter of their advertising but the fact is that they tried to sell people on the idea of being the OEM to go to for updates and they completely violated the spirit (perhaps not the letter) of that advertising by providing only one incremental update and then dropping it.
Moto X Style definitely has a better screen than the 5X, also the video was a lot more stabilized than the 5X. Moto X Style has 2 front facing, loud, clear speaker, where the 5X only has one

How am I biased when I bought the Motorola first?
The Motorola had it goods, but the bad outweighed it.
I was sooo close to ordering the MXPE. I literally had my customized, Moto Maker'd device in the cart ready to check out when i started looking more into the 5x. Which from spec release until about 2 weeks ago I'd written off as my next device.
Then I spent some time researching and reading and researching, finally deciding on the 5x. Couldn't be happier. I've never had the MXP in my hands, but I'm in love with my Nexus, and the eventual development will be the cherry on top.
The size and weight of this thing is near perfect. The screen and speaker and sound on earbuds are nowhere near as bad as some may have made it seem.
I literally have 3 gripes about this phone. One major and 2 minor that aren't that big of a deal and I am already over.
1. No SD card. Pretty obvious.
2. 3.5mm jack is on the bottom. No big deal.
3. Bezels take up too much screen space, especially on the sides.
Honestly 2 and 3 never crossed my mind as a deal breaker. And no SD card I can live with, just need to steam my music instead of store it.
Sorry for the long rant, I just wanted to share I was on the fence between these two phones and couldn't be happier that I chose the Nexus.

The biggest reason is phone size. I wasn't interested in a large phone.
A second reason is that I don't really trust Moto anymore after my experience with a carrier Moto X 2014. Their builds were buggy and their update frequency and availability tapers off quickly over time.
