trying ZTE BLADE as USB HOST

Hi all.
I heard that zte blade has the capability of USB HOST. Also heard it can't power the usb slave device attached to it. Instead of purchasing a usb power hub, i manually tried making a cable which has the similar function but draws power from PC usb port (don't know how far it works. I haven't been successful).
The description of the cable i made is in the picture attached below.
PLEASE SEE THE PICTURE ATTACHED.
For a device with native usb host (such as galaxy note) i guess the device USB-CABLE coupled with USB-FEMALE-TO-FEMALE-BRIDGE is enough to attach slave devices. But for the devices which cannot give power supply in USB HOST mode i assumed and tried the cable which was described in the picture.
Blade was my handset. My friend had galaxy note. I tried connecting blade as a slave to galaxy note with a NATIVE USB-OTG CABLE. But it said the slave device is high powered and needs seperate power supply. In such case i think the cable i prepared might work (if it works) replacing usb powered hub.
Ok, coming to our zte blade device. I prepared a usb female to female bridge and connected it to usb plug of usb cable. Then i connected only the data + and data - of USB PERIPHERAL DEVICE to zte blade. The VCC +5V (red) and GND (black) are supplied from a PC usb port.
And im sure i connected data+ to data+ only. And similarly (data- to data- only) , (vcc to vcc only) , (GND to GND only).
And i tested it with a usb keyboard and a memory card reader. I tested on cm7.1.0 because i heard this build has kernel supporting usb host (? Is it not?). Im unsuccessful with both tests. When i connected memory card reader the led light in the card reader turned on but i cant see any drive/folder/notification on m phone. And with usb keyboard there is not even NUM LOCK led on. Am i missing the kernel support or something. If so pls tell me what kernel should i use.
And is it the thing i prepared wont work at all.??

This is not a (how-to-make-something) post. If you are experimenting with some cables, make sure that you connect the connections correctly. Changing polarity can brick your device. Im not responsible for anything.

i try to connect a usb flash memory to my tab 2 and i follow a trick
i get female-to-female usb adapter and connected it to the galaxy tab 2 usb adapter (that comes with it in the box)
then connect to it a usb flash memory , but my tab didn't read any thing
so after searching,using my avometer and making tests between my tab and my lab i concluded that:
-the female-to-female usb adapter is working probably
-there is no 5v output on the usb male adapter so i think because that the terminal device can't be read
please help me, any one can explain that?
is the manufacture close that property or my android is crushed or must be a microcontroller in otg to work,.... or what??

The following link shows how to make your own OTG cable (for another device). http://tech2.in.com/how-to/accessor...sb-otg-cable-for-an-android-smartphone/319982. So there is some additional connection b/w pin 4 & 5 that makes it works as OTG cable.
Is it worth the hassle? I am not sure. I got OTG cable for $0.99 in ebay. Before buying it I tried female USB cable like OP and failed.

i found the reason
the secret in the 30 pin connector
which its pins are grouped each group is serves another connector in the another side of cable
so the group of usb has a pin named otg responsible for turning your cable to otg cable
so in the usb male connector it is not connected
so i think that is why samsung didn't built in its tabs a micro usb port and built this port instead it "to can market its accessories"

Hello, I want to know how many USB-Devices you can use, assuming you use a normal USB-OTG cable and a cheap USB hub (without external power supply). How many devices can Android theoretically recognize? Is it possible to use a keyboard, mouse and USB stick/HDD? Would be cool if someone could try this....

Android can recognize as many devices as there are USB hub ports, check out this video (I know it's for the Galaxy S3 but the idea is the same) specifically 2:50 seconds on using a USB hub with mouse, keyboard, and other accessories.

Thanks, but I think the hub used in the video has an external power supply. At 3:50 you can see the black round cable...

It should work the same with a non powered USB except that power will be drawn from the tablets battery power instead of an external power supply.

I tried to use multiple usb flash drives but they were not compatible with the aosp roms otg storage implementations. It recognized the first and after adding the second it didnt recognize it, but the first onewas still tdhere
I think in this case its simply not implemented
I will try flash drive + mouse/keyboard and give feedback when i have time

I tried for a couple of days to tweak the implementation in my kernel mod so that multiple usb drives could be mounted, i took pointers from my s3, but it seems samsung have further mods, probably to vold in their own brand devices and i couldnt for the life of me get it to recognise more than one device on the n10.

I think a powered hub is the way to go if you're using multiple devices as I'm sure there's a limit as to how much power the USB port can supply to your devices. You may find that several flash drives work fine together with a powered hub and I would try to get one with a 5v 2a adaptor if possible to give you flexibility to plug virtually anything in you wish simultaneously

Without a powered hub the deciding factor for how many devices you can use is going to be how much power each device draws... And that will vary from device to device.
I, personally, have had a keyboard, wireless mouse, flash drive and Xbox controller all connected at the same time with an unpowered hub.

Yeah, multiple flash drives and especially external USB spinners tend to draw a lot more power. Input devices (keyboards, mice, joypads) use very little power but a combination of several may be enough to give you intermittent operation and a few issues.
Usually when people start connecting keyboards and suchlike, they're going to be at a desk so should have access to a wall socket anyway; powered hubs tend to make multiple devices work better as it's a stable power supply available.

do you think the n10 provides less poser on its usb bus than a pc or laptop? i think its able to provide the same power as my pc and 3 usb sticks + wireless keyboard/mouse work perfectly with a non powered hub...
btw. i just tried the hub with 1 flash + mouse+ keyboard, works perfectly (aosp rom 2nd dec version i think)

I'm pretty certain that it does provide less; I have a 2.5" WD Passport HDD that is bus powered. My XOOM used to power it, my PC and laptops power it, but my Nexus 10 doesn't. The N10 certainly isn't pushing 500mA in host mode cause the drive can't even spin up on the power its receiving. It's a real shame cause I had hoped to power the HDD directly.
What I need now is a nice small powered hub that I can power from an emergency phone charger battery, like my Mili Power brick.

How to attach usb powered hub to android stick? Which port

I have an andrid. Stick mx2 imito and I have a powered USB hub but I can't configure how I am meant to to get it to read from the hub. I have 2 ports on the stick, one full sized usb and one mini usb .
And In terms of devices I have my keyboard I want to add
1 external usb hard drive
And if I can get it to work a USB wifi dongle

Since there is only one full sized USB port, I would think that is the solution. That's how it runs on mine anyway. Connect all your devices to the powered hub. Should be straight forward

So I would need a usb cable male to make? To connect to the hub. Do they exist ? I will try find the cable .

The hub will come with one male USB to connect to the stick.

this was an old hub i had, i dont have that wire. its a mini usb to full usb type connection isn't it?

ok great, so the port next to the power socket, is the cable i need to attach to and from the imito android stick? so that will be the main one and any other usb devices can go on the hub.

It should also be possible to modify a USB hub to back feed power to the HDMI stick.
You would then power the hub with a sufficiently large USB power supply to power both the stick and all of the USB devices. In most cases, a single 2.1 Amp USB "wall wart" would work to power everything, unless you are really running something outrageous.
My NX003 (Same as MX1) can be powered from either the dedicated USB power jack, or the MicroUSB (OTG) connector.
So to build something like this, here is what I would do:
1. Obtain a USB hub I was willing to modify (destroy, as far as any other use is concerned)
2. Disassemble it.
3. Remove the input (Host) cable or connector.
4. Attach a short cable with a MicroUSB plug. Connect all 4 wires correctly.
5. Find "The diode" - Buy "The diode" I mean the one that that allows USB power to flow from the host to the peripherals when used in non-powered mode, but prevents power from flowing upstream to the host when an external power supply is used. (see referenced link).
6. Remove this diode, and replace it with a wire, jumper, or solder bridge.
7. Ensure all power circuity in the hub can handle 2 amps. Add solder to traces, or add jumper wire if needed to beef up current capability.
8. Reassemble, and clearly mark so that this hub is never used with anything else.
If the HDMI stick were powered via a coaxial connection, but is still powered by 5 Volts, I'd add a lead and coaxial plug off of the +5 in the hub. you'll have 2 wires, but it will still work. (Watch polarity.)

Thank you for the informatiom, but its a bit too technical for what i want... but i appreciate you efforts in writing this.
my stick can also power via both usb ports (mini) i have connected the cable from the stick to the hub which has been powered to the mains and it works, but the problem i have is when i put another usb device in the hub, it doesnt detect it e.g. keyboard wireless and i don't think the device has enough power to run my usb 2.0 portable harddrive (not main powered) - how can i get this to work? i have tried connecting this directly to the stick, but it just makes a beep sound. im guessing its lack of power... and i was hoping a hub would help.
my hub is powered 3.5 or 4 watts i believe...

This is very strange. On my MK802III I connect the powered USB hub (4 ports) to the full USB port.
I connect my bluetooth keyboard, 1 TB HDD and USB ethernet to the hub.
I power my Android stick using the 4rth port in the USB hub.
If I want USB audio, I replace the Ethernet/HDD with a USB audio peripheral.
All my peripherals work right out of the box. The only thing I am considering now is to have a separate power supply to the Android stick so that I can use all 4 ports on my hub.
It seems your device is not supporting the peripherals? Are the working when you connect directly?

I'm also trying to use a powered 4 port usb hub with my android stick, but it doesnot recognises the hub. Do i need to have any usb host drivers or change any setting to get it work? My stick is on Android ICS.. Thanks in advance

[Q] things to buy

I have my NP coming next week! Now I need to know what I should order to go with it. Should I get a USB hub for it? Can I use the Logitech k400 if I wanted? Can I plug a 1TB HDD in somehow to play my movies? My computer recently died so my plex server is down :/

Get an adapter cable from micro USB to USB female. Then get a powered USB hub - the passive ones probably won't be able to drive your HDD.
With Kodi, you won't need the PC-based server!
Lots of choices for a Bluetooth keyboard/mouse. I use my Logitech diNovo Mini.

I would recommend the Inateck HB4003 Gigabit Ethernet & 3 Port USB 3.0 Hub. It has the micro usb adapter built into it as well as an ethernet port & a hub. If you want to use your TV remote instead of the nexus player, I would recommend getting a FLIRC usb adapter as well.

Thanks for the ideas! I'm really pumped lol.. Kodi sounds like a perfect fit for me. Are there any restrictions on hard drive size that can be connected?

One thing I noticed with the HB4003 it looks like a regular USB end not a micro and the cable doesn't detach. Where you saying get that and the micro USB to USB female adapter? Thanks!

My mistake, you are right. Its has been so long ago since I put together my setup. I forgot that I also have a HooToo (HT-CT01) Micro USB OTG + 4 port charging hub as part of my setup (used to charge my cell phone, tablet, & game controllers). You will need a micro usb OTG cable if you go with the HB4003.
Regardless of which OTG cable you go with, make sure that it is a straight cable for OTG. If the otg device is a right/left angle cable or a short adapter, it won't work because of how scrunched the cables are.

I've been thinking about this, and in this case it's better to get a powered usb hub, and plug a usb-ethernet adapter into that hub.

For me, it hasn't been an issue that the HB4003 is not powered. Then again, all I have connected is a FLIRC adapter, mini usb receiver for my Lenovo N9502 keyboard/mouse, & a thumb drive.

I chose the adapter to reduce clutter & reduce my millions of wire behind my TV. The way I see it, having one less USB connected device is one less thing to diagnose (I am always flashing roms & plugging & unplugging devices to the USB hub.

Yeah, but now having a ssd to increase userdata space is a valid method, it changes a limitation of the NP. For me personally I'll just hide away the clutter.

This is what I have. Click here for my review on XDA. However, there is only 1 USB port that is connected to the OTG. The remaining 4 ports are for charging purposes only. If you need more than 1 USB port fort OTG purposes & possibly an ethernet port, I would get the HooToo and the Inateck.
The way mine is wired is:
Nexus player ---> Micro USB Cable (provided) ---> USB extension cable (OTG cable is short and wanted to hide the hub) ---> HooToo Hub (back HooToo USB OTG port) ---> Inateck Hub (Front of HooToo Hub)

Hehe...that's your setup? How is that reducing clutter?
If anything, removing the HooToo hub is reducing clutter, unless you need more than the OTG ports on the Inateck hub.

So micro to USB female > inateck hub with Ethernet is probably the best choice then.. I just wish I know it'd push a 1TB HDD and a Logitech K400.. Thats all I'd hook up to it.

Most probably not as the 1TB hdd will require a powered usb hub.
Unless it's one of those that has it's own power source.

There is a method to my madness! It makes more sense when you see my setup.
My setup:
1x Harmony Smart Hub (USB Powered)
1x Winegard LNA-200 Boost XT Digital HDTV Preamplifier (USB Powered)
2x Micro USB Cables (Charging Tablet & Phone)
The Hootoo hub allows me to charge/power all 4 devices using 1 power brick instead of 4 individual power bricks. Having a functioning OTG was icing on the cake.

Yes, that sounds right (make sure it says OTG). Is your 1TB HDD self-powered or is it powered through the USB port? If it is self-powered, it should work. I just plugged up my spare 1TB Fantom Self-Powered (power brick) HDD to see if it works and it seems to be okay. If it is not self-powered, it may be ymmv.

I have two HDDs actually. Both 1TB but one was in my desktop and I'd just order a powered enclosure for and the other is a western digital mobile drive without power.
So I'm pretty sure I'll go micro otg > inateck> powered HDD and Logitech K400.. That's really all I can see I'd use really. My TV is on the other side of the room. So not like I'll be walking over there much.

Why not plug the hdd into your router? It'll be accessible everywhere, easier to add/delete files on it.

My router is an older N 300 Cisco.. Sadly I've got no USB support for something like that atm. I'm looking into a router upgrade though. But the one I have has worked well for about 2 years now.

My router is an older N 300 Cisco.. Sadly I've got no USB support for something like that atm. I'm looking into a router upgrade though. But the one I have has worked well for about 2 years now.

Certainly something to consider.
But seriously, if all you're going to put on that hdd is media, plugging it into your PC and sharing it works the same as plugging it into a router (only bad point is that your PC needs to be switched on for the hdd to be accessible). If you're going to be plugging/unplugging your hdd from your Nexus Player just to add files, it gets old pretty fast.
