Hello, I want to know how many USB-Devices you can use, assuming you use a normal USB-OTG cable and a cheap USB hub (without external power supply). How many devices can Android theoretically recognize? Is it possible to use a keyboard, mouse and USB stick/HDD? Would be cool if someone could try this....
Thanks in advance!

Android can recognize as many devices as there are USB hub ports, check out this video (I know it's for the Galaxy S3 but the idea is the same) specifically 2:50 seconds on using a USB hub with mouse, keyboard, and other accessories.

Thanks, but I think the hub used in the video has an external power supply. At 3:50 you can see the black round cable...

It should work the same with a non powered USB except that power will be drawn from the tablets battery power instead of an external power supply.

I tried to use multiple usb flash drives but they were not compatible with the aosp roms otg storage implementations. It recognized the first and after adding the second it didnt recognize it, but the first onewas still tdhere
I think in this case its simply not implemented
I will try flash drive + mouse/keyboard and give feedback when i have time

I tried for a couple of days to tweak the implementation in my kernel mod so that multiple usb drives could be mounted, i took pointers from my s3, but it seems samsung have further mods, probably to vold in their own brand devices and i couldnt for the life of me get it to recognise more than one device on the n10.

I think a powered hub is the way to go if you're using multiple devices as I'm sure there's a limit as to how much power the USB port can supply to your devices. You may find that several flash drives work fine together with a powered hub and I would try to get one with a 5v 2a adaptor if possible to give you flexibility to plug virtually anything in you wish simultaneously
Sent from my XT910 using xda premium
Without a powered hub the deciding factor for how many devices you can use is going to be how much power each device draws... And that will vary from device to device.
I, personally, have had a keyboard, wireless mouse, flash drive and Xbox controller all connected at the same time with an unpowered hub.
Yeah, multiple flash drives and especially external USB spinners tend to draw a lot more power. Input devices (keyboards, mice, joypads) use very little power but a combination of several may be enough to give you intermittent operation and a few issues.
Usually when people start connecting keyboards and suchlike, they're going to be at a desk so should have access to a wall socket anyway; powered hubs tend to make multiple devices work better as it's a stable power supply available.

do you think the n10 provides less poser on its usb bus than a pc or laptop? i think its able to provide the same power as my pc and 3 usb sticks + wireless keyboard/mouse work perfectly with a non powered hub...
btw. i just tried the hub with 1 flash + mouse+ keyboard, works perfectly (aosp rom 2nd dec version i think)

I'm pretty certain that it does provide less; I have a 2.5" WD Passport HDD that is bus powered. My XOOM used to power it, my PC and laptops power it, but my Nexus 10 doesn't. The N10 certainly isn't pushing 500mA in host mode cause the drive can't even spin up on the power its receiving. It's a real shame cause I had hoped to power the HDD directly.
What I need now is a nice small powered hub that I can power from an emergency phone charger battery, like my Mili Power brick.

ehm..
ehm..
usb key and mouse,
usb key and an external hdd
2 external hdd
mouse and external hdd
2 usb pen
an external dvd that need 2 usb
included hub need 2 usb
and i think many many many others uses
You get a free USB hub with Ethernet !!
Included in the package is a USB hub with 3 ports, AND an ETHERNET port !
Nice... I really do like my device

really ? why would they put a usb hub that does not work with the shift... seems weird !
everybody here is using the usb hub without any issue I believe.. because they would have complained earlier
The (much bigger) MacBook AIR also has only one USB port... and Apple doesn't include an 3port-USB-Hub with embedded ethernet port - the shift does.
But there are of course also technical reasons (besides space): Power! An additional USB Port would require additinal power (up to 0,5A at 5V) - thus, the internal power system must be bigger sized for this (and an "oversized" internal power system means: Inefficent under normal operating conditions).
And remember: Most USB Disks draw more than 0,5A from the USB port, especially at spinup time...

when i'm in office or at home i use an external power cable directly connected to the htc hub. but is not comfortable.
and when i'm out or in others places i can't use external power cable.
in my opinion not comfortable anymore.
Isn't the small USB port at the back of the Hub just power in? I didn't try yet, but it is obviously a IN port.

These usb options are great but I think you missing the point of the shift.
The shift is supposed to be a portable device, are you really going to bring all those wired devices with you? Do you really want to be connecting all that up each time you get to work or your desk at home? everyday?
Why not use bluetooth devices?
keyboard and mouse -bluetooth for sure.
Same goes for the pens, portable scanners and printers almost all of them can be found with a bluetooth options.
Hell I even use bluetooth devices for the serial connections on the routers and switches I work with.
Now your external dvd and hardrive to replace those you have to get creative -
For home and work I always map a drive from a desktop machine.
On the road you have a couple of options with flash drives at 16gb for $50-70 bucks do really need that old external harddrive that uses two ports?
32GB flash drives are now as low as $150. Quite few dvd's you can fit on that!
If you really want to be free of carrying stuff around sign up for sugarsync or some other online service and never carry your data again.
I almost never use the external usb hub that came with the shift. It is a last resort item for me, destined for the bottom of the laptop bag. Wifi, 3g and no cables will always be prefered over that thing.
You may like sticking with usb cable/dongle devices but consider switching a few out for more wireless solutions and I think you will like your shift a whole lot better. That rats nest of cables in your laptop bag will shink as well!
I am not knocking you question or the advise others have given just offering an alternative.
My dream is for somebody to find a way to charge the battery on my shift without a cable connected then I will die a happy man.

yes is a power in port. if shift had 2 ports i can be able to use it whitout a power connector at wall (sorry for the expression) i don't know how to say it in english.
however shift have one only usb port. and it is not comfortable.

yeah charging batteries without power cord maybe the century revelation. i hope will be a reality...
i return to my argument ( always sorry for my english)
online storage are not very fast.. or capable for the gigabites that i need to carry with me.
every day i need to put on my pc's, shift included, customers files, personal files, try many new programs. and these actions (you well know on microsoft may destroy very fast a system configuration). an you know that vista business and ultimate have an usefull utility of backup. i need to backup and restore many times in a week or in a day my sistem. so, i need to carry with me many hdd or 8gb pen drive..
and this is my problem..

if you put your mobile phone power cord in the htc hub will be feeded up.
now when hub is feeded you can put more hdd or an external dvd. but if you unput power cord the dvd or the hdds not work yet...
Did you plug a power supply in the mini usb plug on the back? This is a powered USB hub.
i think htc could of added more usb ports but the biggest problem was the space. more usb ports could of made it bigger. never disassembled or looked at the disassembly pics close but im guessing there is no more room really.

else use the usb hub and bluetooth mouse/keyboard
Hi, im wondering if i can use a USB hub with my acer so i can have a keyboard and mouse hooked up before i buy one.
Yes it does.

Sweet! Thanks for the info
Yes but limited to power Requirements
As stated above it will Support a hub ..
But with limitations on devices.. you will not be able to say use a full size usb hard drive while connected to a keyboard and mouse at the same time. I belive this will be to much power . look at the amps and the devices are pulling and compare them with with the Hub says its needs are.. But this is common on any usb hub. they make some that you can use with or without power cord.. I have one that works will i think its a cheaper belkin brand..... very tiny and have 4 ports..

You are correct because they require 12 v.. I use a 1.2 tb laptop drive in a enclosure on mine... it works without power but when powered its much faster.guess there is some type of throttle software.. mine has sata connector . that i also use on my laptop on the esata port .. there its awesome fast.. I have linux windows 8 and a diag version of dos installed on with a nice multi boot loader of course..
For those into games.. my sons Saitek x45 flight controller works on the a500. but MUST Be connected to a usb Powered hub . not sure what he plays with it other then the racing game.. from gameloft. So glad he is off to school now so i get my tablet to myself again...
Hello.
I decided to try and make a DIY OTG usb cable for my atrix, followed one of the many guides on the web.
How ever, Nothing seem to happen when I plug something to the phone.
I tried keyboards, mice, pen tablets, thumb drives, but nothing happens.
Also when I connect the phone to my laptop with the same cable, nothing happens either. (From reading around I think that should be expected)
Using another cable the laptop recognize the phone and all is well so I didn't fry the port.
Something else that might be worth mentioning, I use a male micro usb to male regular usb and a converter to female at the end of that one.
I tried it with both latest CM7 nightly and Jokers 0.6.9.1 CM9, both on their stock kernels.
So am I forgetting / missing something or should I take apart the cable again and check what's wrong?
Edit:
Toke apart the cable, removed the connection between pin4 and pin5 and the cable worked as a normal cable again.
Can't think of a reason why this isn't working.
normal OTG cables don't work with atrix,
I have read somewhere that you need to power the otg cable with external power source, you can mod a powered usb hub for example
Thank you.
I don't have a powered hub, nor a regular hub...
So I'll try to make a usb y cable that will power the mouse/keyboard and see if that will work.
Edit:
That did the trick.
Made a Y cable that connects the data between the phone (with OTG cable between) and device and an extension that connects both to power only (currently from laptop usb).
At first it didn't work at all but after a few tries it started to charge the phone, allowed me to connect a DOK and a mouse.
However didn't want to work for a 250HDD or a pen tablet.
I ordered a usb hub and hopefully it will allow me to connect several devices at once.
Thanks again.
I've messed around with this quite a bit. Unfortunately, it seems Faux kernels don't work great with a variety of devices, but work fine for mouse/keyboard. Don't even work very well for USB flash drives and such. I don't even know where to go to report such issues.
This also means on Joker's CM9 it doesn't work great even if it should. Don't forget that CM9 port is still using a Froyo (!) kernel.
It's honestly not even worth building your own cable. You can get hubs that work for this for $5 such as this one:
http://www.dealextreme.com/p/cable-style-dual-power-1000ma-usb-2-0-4-port-hub-13526
Which is the one I currently have.
I'm currently using latest CM7 with the stock kernel and have no issues with USB flash drives.
It usually brings a notification of "preparing SD card" and mounts it under /mnt/usbdisk_1.0
I tried making 4 partitions on a flash drive, EXT2, EXT4 , FAT32 and NTFS .
Thought it only mounted one of them on /mnt/usbdisk_1.0 , it was easy to mount the others /dev/block/sda<1,2,3,4> onto /mnt/usbdisk_1.<1,2,3,4> thus having simultaneous access to all 4 partitions.
How ever the NTFS one only had read permissions since android and NTFS don't go together too well.
The hub you linked to is just a hub, I needed an OTG cable and ordered a 0.99$ usb hub that I will modify for power. so pretty much all set now.
As to reporting such issues, you could ask on the forums if other people have the same issues and how they get around them.
I got these:
http://www.dealextreme.com/p/micro-usb-on-the-go-host-otg-adapter-pair-50774
I tried all sorts of devices, not least of which was a 360 controller. The kernels are very spotty at recognizing new devices being attached.
this is on CM9 of course
I haven't tried to replicate that on CM7 because, frankly, CM7 isn't supposed to support 360 controllers.
The hub I linked is very convenient. It already has a USB power lead as well as a lead for the OTG adapter.

can you give me direction how you did that.. how u provide power without usb hub??
I was writing some dodgy instructions from memory when I found this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1828032
Hope it helps.
so picture it you're using the tablet for video or music running from a memory stick via OTG and you want to be able to power/charge the device at the same time without having to remove the pen drive is there any way of achieving this?
some kind of pass through device perhaps or a usb hub of sorts?
How to power with usb-otg
I can't confirm whether this will work for the Nexus 7 but it has worked on my Triumph and Photon 4G. Go to meritline.com and look for a PisenĀ® Multi Purpose USB Hub, White (sorry can't post links yet.) Plug your otg into the white port and the red into any available usb power supply (be it a laptop or charger) you may want to have an extension available depending on your set-up. For me this has provided power to keep device charged as well as interface thumb drives, card readers, etc, has even powered a bus-powered external hdd with no problems.
I bought an unbranded OTG connector for my Z1. I connected a few common devices i.e. USB flash drive, mouse, wireless gamepad,
All worked. But then I tried all my mobile hard drivess, both USB 2.0 and 3.0. Didnt work at all. My z1 couldn't even get to recognize the device connected. The LED of the HD lights up so its getting power. I'm not sure if its getting enough power.
The OTG connector I bought was the long one. The cable is about 2 inches long. I'm not sure
if you call that the long OTG connector.
Any advice how i could I make the Z1 work with my mobile hard drives?
TIA!

What if you test with a drive that have ac adaptor?
I think you pretend too much from a phone device. I am sure there is not enough power to make it run with the Z1. The solution is to use double usb, first to Z1 the second to the charger or another USB, to power up the HDD. Also like @RHBH said if you use a HDD with the AC adapter and it's working that will clarified all.
Oh sorry I tried it W/O the AC adaptors types hard drives. The small WD passports ones.
Shouldn't it be working since the lights are on and the mobile seems to be running?

Enough to power up the light but not enough to do his job. The reasons can be many but if any HDD with AC charger working and all type of storage, the answer is just one.
The OTG specs of the z1 and xz are the same, I can tell you that if you use a powered usb hub between the disk and the phone it will work just fine.
The power delivered to the disk is simply not enough.
I know the power output can actually be tweaked, but you run a serious risk of destroying your phones usb port.
Or maybe his HDD is not formatted in FAT.....
Well that is odd if I try to format it a 1TB hard drive to FAT. Isnt FAT already phase out in terms of drives over 40GB?
And about the power requirement, OTG + mobile hard drive works on other smartphones.
I bought my C903 online btw. Also, I have gone to Sony a awhile ago and tried to attach my mobile hard drives. None worked.
So I think that confirms it.

I know you are disappointed but try to power up the HDD and see if working. This is not the solution but you get the reason why this happening.
I got 2 mobile HDD and I will test them on my Z1 and I will post the results, when I get the phone from Sony Center, but even if mine will not work I can expect that because is too much but I will be happy too if will work. I let you know.
BTW, can be even the OTG Cable, try different one, I got very heavy problems when I bought one really cheap.
You got a Clamp multimeter buddy? I don't know but I would like to assume there's not enough power to run your mobile HDD. If you do have some way of checking the amperes or wattage output of the OTG of Xperia Z1 and compare it against the required input of your mobile HDD maybe that would point out your issue. Having a non compatible filesystem format would still prompt your phone about a corrupt drive and would ask you to reformat it so it shouldn't be the issue. And as far as I know Xperia Z1 already supports exfat am I right? Or maybe you could at least just format the HDD to fat32 is you still want to check it out since fat32 is supported by default by android.
Depends in the size and usb 3 is not supported unless it had external power and as for format it has to be fat32 or exfat or it won't read out of all my android devices my Asus transformer where the only ones that supported all formats and sizes of hard drives because the docks have tons of extra power.
