"HD Voice" seems like a gimmick to me - Verizon Motorola Droid Turbo General

I have both features enabled on eligible devices, confirmed my call was on lte, and it sounded the same as the 20 year old codec we still use. Anyone else have a difference experience?

Yes.
I was in a weak area though so sometimes there were voice drops.
The quality was loud and quite good. Regular VoLTE sucks for quality though.
How did you verify it was an HD call?

Its 1st gen VoIP all over again, LOL. I think the "update" will be more HD calling rollouts.

Verizon is following a good standard right now with HD calling too. They should be able to connect up with ATT soon.

HD Voice in and of itself isn't a gimmick, the dynamic and frequency range are noticeably better..
On my wired VOIP office phone that is....
I have a couple of customers that I can tell instantly they have a HD polycom VOIP phone, it's like going from ****ty earbuds to a real set of
cans. I talk to people for a living, five days a week, for the last decade. Cell phones all suck for voice call quality. Period. Fin.
I hang up on people that call me on a cell with ****ty reception/quality, and that's 3/4 of them.
It amazes me that after all these years, it still sucks so often.
The cell HD stuff? Wouldn't hold my breath...

I only see HD connections if both are polycoms.

Far as I can tell yes. Lot of smallish businesses are getting service from RingCentral or one of those guys now.
Haven't tried to see if HD works on the VOIP phone apps from the service provider or not.
It'd be nice if they can work this crap out for regular cell calls. For all our advances it's mighty frustrating
in 2014 to still have such ****ty call quality.

I tried Resco Recorder, simply put, does not work.
I tried Vito Audio Notes, its also not working.
Any news on this? I am desperately in need of this to record argue converstation with gf because she likes to turn things around.
No possibility of recording calls on HTC devices simply because of legal issues they wanted to restrict it by making the drivers route the calls not through the OS and that's the main reason for not able to have an auto-answering machine software also.
I love Symbian for this reason alone.

Get a new g/f dude but if you really think a recorder will solve the problem,it may be time to get a new you...lol. just kidding dude and good luck
I loved being able to record convos on my Treo 755p. I would be going back to it but I like GPS on the mogul too much.
Sounds like you need a saner girlfriend and not spy software
I need this for everytime sprint says "Sure are our service is the best".

Don’t worry as soon as we understand any female SHE WILL MORPH AGAIN !!
4th and 20 from your own 5........PUNT!!!
I don't think it is a legal issue as someone posted. Many states allow you to record calls as long as at least 1 member of the party is aware, some states require more than 1.
I know my last PPCPE the wizard allowed me to record calls. Recording calls is not only for spying. I used mine alot when someone was giving me a phone number and I didn't want to go through the whole crap of opening the notepad, selecting free text etc.
It just seems the Mogul overall has been a dissapointment with me. I was HTC's biggest fan when the produced the first XDA for T-Mo with a 3.5" screen
RANT...
Talking about 3.5" screens what happened to them. I've literally stopped using all office mobile apps ever since they shrunk the screen down to 2.4 Excel Mobile is a pain. Pwoerpoint is manageable and Word...Well word mobil is only realistic with a device with a keyboard. I loved using transcriber but there is so little room to write on the 2.4" screen.
Are there any rumours of any 3.5" PPCPE in the works?

The only reason yu think the 3.5" were big is because you've become accustomed to the 2.4".
After the death of the handheld PC in the late '90's and bisth of the PPC. People couldn't belive that PPC's could be as small with their 4" screens. Then the 3.5" came and we were like wow, they shrunk it even more.
I personally think the reason HTC ditched the 3.5" was because PPC's had been regarded as business computers and in order to gain or expand their market niche they brought them down to the siz of cell phones.
Apple has brought the 'BIG' screen back with the iPhone. Since they seem to set fashion trends I'm hopefull.

GrandCentral
One way is to use GrandCentral. You press 4 during the call. May not work well for an angry gf though because it announces that it is being recorded. You'll also have a new phone number. I have my grandcentral line forwarded to my mogul. Lots of features. I know this probably won't work for you but it is the only think I know of for recording that works well.

Thanks for all the "trying" to help guys. I really need this because gf keep changing her mind and story. I need something to show her that.."this is what you said 5 mins ago".....I am going nuts with this. And you know that girls also like to turn story around and make it as if it is your fault. Well need to record those too to study the psychology behind it.
I really like my mogul (had it about 2 weeks now) but the fact of the matter is I can barely read the screen! I put it on largest text size, and that works for some things, but not for many others. Everyone is not 21 years old! Time for designers to realize that.

No Data and Voice simultaneously

Is this a deal breaker for anyone?
http://androidcommunity.com/sprint-evo-4g-wont-do-simultaneous-voice-data-20100329/
I think it's only a big deal in Iphone commercials
Well I guess 4g data and 3g talk is a go not sure how to change the thread title. PM me if you know how.
if this holds up it is not cool. Ive been drooling over this phone for 2 weeks, but with this question in the back of my mind the whole time. ive been an AT&T customer for 5+ years and didnt even know this was an issue untill AT&T came out with the commercials a while back. I was like "what, not everyone can do this??"
I read online that this is not a hardware limitation and could be fixed with a future OTA update.
http://www.androidcentral.com/sprint-clarifies-voice-data-evo-4g
Voice + Wifi = Yes.
Voice + 3G = No.
Voice + 4G = TBD, testing.
I actually never realized I couldn't use data while talking until those commercials ... and I've been using Sprint pda-phones since 2001.
Sprint tweeted that it's still testing so it's possible by the time the phone is released we will be able to do both. But frankly 4g is in so few areas that I doubt it's going to make much of a diff to most ppl. It will be good for the hotspot feature.
can someone name a use for using data while on a call?
I've use Voice and Data at the same time all the time on my G1. I'm either talking to my wife and she needs directions or a phone number and I look it up using Google Maps. Really easy and fast.
Yea AT&T isn't the only one that can do it. I do it on T-Mobile all the time with my Nexus, used to do it with my G1. I'm on a phone call and I get a text. I'm on the phone and I can just launch my browser or Google Maps or Gmail right away and do whatever I want, pretty cool.
Actually Sprint and Verizon can do SMS and voice at the same time too. It's voice and data that they can't handle.
I guess it helps working in the tech industry, if I ever get a call I'm usually around a computer which is faster for looking stuff up anyways...

REALLY? many uses but here is one: my phone is tethered to my laptop. a phone call comes in i am in the middle of sending out emails to clients i can talk and do that at the same time but on sprint you cant. basically tons of reason when im on the phone with someone and a topic comes up i may Google it while we are talking. What do you use your phone for?
You must be a very busy person. Emailing while talking to people at the same time, also that the email must go out immediately during the call instead of after. Must be like a CEO of some company or something =P
I guess I must be getting old, I use my phone for talking on the phone, and when I'm not talking I'm doing the other stuff on it... I'm sorry if that was surprising to hear I was questioning what others are doing while they're talking.
I somewhat laughed at the att&t commercial when a person popped out and downloaded monopoly while talking to someone... are people so uninteresting that you must entertain yourself while you talk to them? And why didn't he just download it before... I don't know, it just seems like a gimmick to me, I can honestly say I've never wished I had that functionality. I guess that's why I asked.
its not a deal breaker for me but honestly if I'm in the car I tend to turn gps on just because I'm a nerd and like looking at new places or not having to find a way looking at traffic and such. and when I'm going to new places I tend to GPS it and not being able to make or take a call when I'm on the road with a chance of losing my barrings is well, bad.
I just realized, idk if other phones use data and voice for video calling but with it being a front facing camera for video calling, I would think they will def offer the data+voice.

yes i do run two companies and i am on the phone for an hour at a time during conference calls that can get boring.
Not even a bother for me and has never been in my 11 yrs on Sprint.
I have a Verizon Blackberry as my company phone and AT&T as a personal phone. The only time not being able to use data and voice at the same time is waiting for an email to send or recieve. It has never been a big issue for me. Annoying sometimes.

Anyone that likes to do 3 things at once, like myself, would really like this feature!!! I assume Sprint will realize that this is important to people and enable it on 4G only. Technically / theoretically no barrier exists and the hardware and software could be designed to support this feature going forward... I guess we need to wait to see what Sprint decides to do. Please don't be penny wise & pound foolish Sprint, yeah I know... wishful thinking!!!!
It's a big difference between GSM and CDMA, GSM can do voice + data, but CDMA can not

I don't need for my phone to be able to do both at the same time but, heck, I joined this forum to make my phone do things it wasn't originally supposed to be able to do.
Since it was mentioned that this is a software issue, it would only be a matter of time before someone could get it to work.

Exactly, only purpose i could see (before DLNA was confirmed anyway) would have been the ability to share your videos via HDMI, so if you went to a friends/family members house and wanted to show your camcorder videos you could via HDMI, it would be as simply as a connection to the TV via the HDMI cable.
But now that mirroring has been unveiled by LG on there Optimus line of phones, Optimus 2X and Revolution, it might be a cool and all to see your games and UI on a big screen tv, but not really necessary since theres DLNA on board and most TV's anymore that are flatscreen or HD have it built in especially with the rise of internet capable tv's like my Samsung 52"
DLNA works great on the new sense and i love how its two way where you can control the content via the phone to the TV or from the PC to the phone and vice versa.
to the TV you can use the phone as the remote, control the playback, pause it turn the volume up and down and all that, just like a boxee minus the TV controls anyway lol
i can't wait till this phone launches, i love the new sense and its ability to have skins and the other features like Locations and Navigation by TomTom (it was confirmed after it launched on the Desire HD that TomTom was the maps/navigation provider)
if you look at all the options we have on this handset, it might not be a dual core phone but its definitely worth an upgrade from the Incredible, which reminds me
if Verizon does it the way i think they are, and launch after the 22nd, all the Original launch day Incredible owners would be eligible to upgrade to the ThunderBolt (assuming they got a 1 year contract, which i always get so i don't get burned when a new handset arrives the year after).
but it kinda makes sense,
launch the successor to a phone like the Incredible right after the time they become eligible to upgrade during there 1 year agreement, if i recall, they did this with the launch of the Droid X for the OGD owners, so timing really is everything.

True. I had a BB Curve, and being on the phone trying to pull up the Browser/Google Maps to get directions or anything was slower than hell...much easier just to look up and call back, you are correct there!
I am 42 yrs so for me a bigger screen without the cumbersome height of a droid x is worth considering. New sense is truly awesome too (now that I have played on the Z/HD ports) and the extra features are welcome. However, currently the Incredible is a truly open platform to us and we have no idea what HTC will do or be forced to do on the thunderbolt's bootloader. What if they go the motorola way?
As you can see from my sig I am a rom slut/whore/whatever is the male equivalent. I worry that HTC will make it harder for us to root the thunderbolt and that alone will be enough for me to rule out that phone. So I will seriously consider it only if I find out that it can be nand unlocked. Until then, no point switching from the inc to a phone that cant be modded and to be locked down into whatever the carrier allows me to do. That would be a bad trade. Plus LTE towers will only slowly be percolating across the country. I do not believe LTE will be widely available everywhere we are immediately. Why not wait a bit before paying for LTE service? Believe me, it will cost you more.
I also did not like the small battery. What if the energy utilization efficiencies are only marginal? That would not be good. The included 32gb micro sdhc card is worth some $ but think about this - why did they think they had to throw a free 32gb card in?
Another thing that concerns me is that while this phone might have better specs than the inc, it is not dual core (seems six months on every phone will be dual core) so is this a significant upgrade to the inc? I dont know. Early adopters may have a better toy only for a short period of time. The initial tech curve is always very steep.
My 2 cents

Airwave2

I had the original airwave and now I have the new one but it has intimittant call waiting failure....anyone else get this. Can't decide if more trouble than worth....(have multiple locations and phones on account) right now the new one is unplugged.Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA Premium App
im aware of the call waiting problem. personally, i dont mind. its great for data. the first AIRAVE does not. fair trade off to me.
I personally love the Airave 2 that I have, it consistently gives me 5/6 - 6/6 bars of cellular signal, and strong 3G inside my home (I'm not in a 4G area).
Been sporting the old one for almost 3 years now...never had any issues with it. Love it. I thought about getting the new one but wifi works fine for me.
There is actually a known issue with compatibility of the Airave and the Samsung Epic 4G. It is due to be addressed in the next MR
I upgraded to the new one, my only issue is how much more annoying it is when it beeps 3 times every time I make a call vs how the old one would only do it once so you knew it was connecting. Wish i could change that.

I have the new AirRave and its so absolutely crappy. I mean, I love it most of the time, but then it will randomly go a week where I am unable to call a landline through it without it immediately giving me a busy signal. I can call other mobiles, but not a landline. And then it will sometimes just decide to stop working for an hour or so and fix itself. This happens several times a week. Its great technology, but I don't think its ready for primetime yet. It feels VERY beta. If I was paying for it I would have sent it back within a week.

There is actually a known issue with compatibility of the Airave and the Samsung Epic 4G. It is due to be addressed in the next MR

The old one does two beeps.
Methinks I will hold on to the Airave 1 a little while longer... who cares about 3G when I have wifi.
It does 3g and can connect more then 3 devices but generally speaking most ppl don't really need to upgrade for that reaso

Can you talk and surf?

I am wondering if talk and surf is back in S7. I could not believe they dropped in in S6. Thank you.
If you mean advanced calling yes it does have it.

Thank you for replying. I remember reading people were having a lot of problems with S6 with advanced calling with calls dropping and other things. How is it on S7? Thank you.
No problem, I love it. It really is a nice phone. I came from a z3v and waited over a year for Verizon to give us advanced calling. This phone is is a little worse on battery but with actual quick charge, fills up faster than I could have imagined. I had advanced calling through a leaked version of lollipop on z3v and never dropped a call. That is just my experience though.

I can't remember the last time I dropped a call with Verizon period. Love it or hate it, they have great service.

But advanced calling costs extra from Verizon, right?

No extra cost associated with it.
I'll definitely check that out. Thanks Jayno20!
Whenever I've tried advanced calling it sounds bad, but that's me personally. I've tried on the Z3v, V10 and this S7. Maybe I'll try it more but from my few experiences I'm not happy with the quality.
That's the first I've ever heard that. Everyone that hears it has nothing but good things to say.

Typically for me, when I had it on I rarely got anyone else with HD calling enabled on their phone. The only person I really try it with is my girlfriend, but maybe she's just awful at using her phone. The experiences I had were it sounded clear, but it would randomly get really quiet for no reason at all. Like I said, I'll try it out again and see how it goes with other people. I noticed with Hangouts calling it sounded crisp, like I was in the same room with the person but at the same time if my data connection were to fluctuate or change, it gave a weird electrical tone. Like, their voice would drop into a strange static, which I've experienced with HD calling.

As can I, S7 on VZW..
It is not enabled when I Talk and Surf on data...
I would recommend tethering the phone to your person so if you fall off the board it will be fine. It is water resistant so you should be fine.
