Hey everyone, I'm fairly new here but I have a Samsung S4 SGH-I337 running kitkat 4.4.4 from AT&T.
I recently rooted my s4 with towelroot and everything went okay, but now I'm trying to find a way to turn SELinux from enforcing to permissive. I've tried the SElinux mode changer and wanam xposed but both of them weren't able to switch SElinux to permissive. Most of the threads I read said I should find a new kernel with the SELinux set to permissive but all the kernels I've found so far are for kitkat 4.4.2 or jellybean 4.3
Also liked I said, I'm pretty new to this thing and I wanted to know would the kernels for the t-mobile sprint and global s4 work on my AT&T model? I looked them up and it does seem they have different model numbers so I don't want to try flashing it just to end up bricking my phone.
I'm trying to get my phone to mirror with my AppRadio3 through chromecast. I've gotten it to mirror and everything works except for touch, which I'm thinking is due to SElinux being set to enforcing. If anybody could help I would greatly appreciate it!

The 4.4.4 nj4 kernel is not able to be rooted and also does not work with selinux changers.

Ah I didn't know the kernel couldn't be rooted. I followed the instructions from droidviews to root my phone but if I can't do anything with the kernel then it looks like I'm out of luck
Is there any way to downgrade my s4 from kitkat 4.4.4 to something else like kitkat 4.3 or jellybean 4.2? I've seen some tutorials on how to downgrade from 4.4.2 to jellybean, but I haven't been able to find a tutorial on how to downgrade from 4.4.4

Yes check the general thread regarding Odin to stock. I downgraded to nb1 but some people care about tethering. Not sure which one allows tethering.

Oh okay, I'll go read up on that before trying to downgrade my phone. I used odin in one of the steps to root my phone but its probably a whole different process to downgrade it. Also thanks for your fast replies, you've been really helpful I really appreciate it!

sorry for n00b question guys... i receently updated to 4.3 on my I9500 S4 with out any problems everything is booted up and smooth
but why does the selinux state enforcing? what does it mean? should i be worried? or just ignore it?
Thanks!
Nope
There's no point in worrying now - you can't go back! There currently is no way of downgrading from firmware 4.3 as Samsung have locked the bootloader with that update. If you're happy with that and don't miss any of the 4.2.2 features, then it won't be a problem for you.

im not bothered about that but what if there is a new 4.3 update with more changes i can always update that yea? and will it always be on 'ENFORCING' now?
so all 4.3 updates are set to enforcing?
Would also really like to know. Read over in other forums you can change it back to permissive and I'm guessing you need root for this and a little more so a bit out of my comfort zone with beyond root, so is it gonna be a problem down the line?
Hey guys, I've done a lot of searching in this forum and found a lot of conflicting answers, so decided to start a fresh thread. I've been on 4.2.2/MF3 for a while now running Safetrap. I'm looking to take the OTA from AT&T and upgrade to 4.3.
I havent seen any root methods for 4.3 yet, but the question is, can I upgrade to 4.3 and retain root if I am running the latest version of SuperSU Pro with survival mode enabled?
A custom recovery with the option for installing ROMs is not needed, especially since I havent been able to do that since I updated to MF3. All I need is to keep root under 4.3 and I'll be more than happy, thanks!

This is my exact question. I just need some concrete answer as to yes or no... but as you said way too many conflicting answers!
YES.
I used "Survival mode" and it worked for me.

Hi so there is a way to update stock to 4.3 and continue using safestrap to run 4.2.2 roms????I would doubt that with what Ive read so far.

I too can confirm this works using Survival Mode from SuperSU Pro (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.supersu.pro&hl=en).
Now, that being said, being a very big noob myself (switching over from heavily tweaked jailbroken iPhone 5), I did this, all was well, I thought I had some issues with some apps and thought 'hmm... maybe I'll just downgrade to MF3 and see if the problem is fixed'. Yeah, attempting to do that with Odin has left me soft-bricked, but for all intents and purposes (that I can tell) it's actually hard-bricked 'cause Kies did nothing, Odin does nothing, if I understand things correctly the only thing that could possibly help is if we had the MD5's available to us for MK2, which, my searching is coming up empty. So, point is according to what I can tell, if you go MK2, there is NO going back to 4.2.2, so use caution.
So just an important safety tip there (unless someone wants to correct my noobness).
Yes. I can confirm that enabling "survival mode" in SuperSU and updating will keep your root; i did this on my pphone coming from MF3.
However, with that being said, i quickly unrooted from there because i had issues with MMS/messaging and phone calls not being recieved, and i did not want to reset my phone. If you run into similar issues as i am not the only one reporting those issues you can so a reset on your data (your root will not be affected, you will be rooted after the reset) or an unroot will work.
happy updating

First with Safestrap you CAN flash Roms. It is just limited to about 10 or so Roms that will work as they need to be 4.2.2 based.
Now with that said for those that ONLY want root on MK2 then someone in the Verizon thread has a WORKING ROOT available for MK2 4.3 firmware here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2565758 and it DOESN'T come with the maliscious code that Kango and VRoot does. This DOES NOT give you recovery but it does give root. So thank the OP in that thread for helping out the community. I did and I HOPE I will never need to use it!!!
Good luck and Happy Rooting...

Hey guys. I recently started a thread in the general android Q&A but was given the helpful idea to check these parts...
I used to have an apk for towelroot that would root the S4 (i337 or i537) without requiring an internet connection OR a reboot to work! I thought I got it from the towelroot website but I have tried all 3 official versions from there with no luck and am now wondering if anyone here had the same APK I was using.
I lost my copy and miss it
Thanks!
What build are you on?
I337 stock NI1, rooted, unlocked
Sm-T537A NE1stock, rooted

I have towelroot v3
let me know if you still need it
I believe v3 is still the current version on the towelroot website. For me it requires internet, but no reboot
I bought a new/ used S5 (to replace my rooted S3) and had hoped to root it as well. Towel root made rooting very easy back then (for my S3) and now as I read the threads with people having the same S5 config as mine, there seems to be no way to root......not even by downgrading to 4.4. Is this correct ?
Being new to this, I am a bit confused about the other custom ROMs being discussed. Does my S5 need to be rooted to install a custom ROM ?
Thanks much

Correct, it's been said over and over in this forum. If you are on BOG5 you cannot root or downgrade. And yes, you must be rooted to run a custom ROM.

You need to flash the NI2 kernel forest, then reboot. This should get you into SS. Look for NI2flasher.apk
You will also need to flash your build kernel (OG5) BEFORE you exit SS.
Hi,
I'm using AT&T S4 running 4.4.4 have nj4 bootloader and currently rooted. My Question is if I downgrade to stock i.e. MDB will I be able to install Custom ROM like Cynagenmod ? Please reply
I'm going back to stock using this Guide
Thanks
I assume you want to downgrade from a locked bootloader to an unlocked bootloader. Based on everything I have read, this cannot be done.

If you could downgrade to stock unlocked bootloader, you could be able to install Custom rom like cyanogenmod (CM). So far, we do not have solution to downgrade to unlocked bootloader from the locked bootloader. The lowest you can go without tripping the knox counter is NB1.
If you want to install the CM, there is a safestrap version availible on xda. You can find it here.

Thanks for the link will check it. I have another problem with nj4 kernel
I wanted to change android mode from enforcing to permissive so I downloaded an app called se mod changer but the problem is that when I select permissive it just revert back to enforcing without any error. I also tried to change mod using terminal but that also revert back to enforcing.
I tried this app on moto x and s3 and it worked fine.
If I downgrade to nb1 will I be ablw.to change mod ?
Thanks

What I understand about SELinux Mode changer is it depends on the kernel that you are using. The kernel has to be complied such a way that SELinux mode can be changeable.. When I was on kit-kat, I was using GE roms. The cooker included a safestrap flashable modified AT&T kernel so we could change the SElinux mode and to be able to use the xPose module.
