I bought a new/ used S5 (to replace my rooted S3) and had hoped to root it as well. Towel root made rooting very easy back then (for my S3) and now as I read the threads with people having the same S5 config as mine, there seems to be no way to root......not even by downgrading to 4.4. Is this correct ?
Being new to this, I am a bit confused about the other custom ROMs being discussed. Does my S5 need to be rooted to install a custom ROM ?
Thanks much

Correct, it's been said over and over in this forum. If you are on BOG5 you cannot root or downgrade. And yes, you must be rooted to run a custom ROM.

You need to flash the NI2 kernel forest, then reboot. This should get you into SS. Look for NI2flasher.apk
You will also need to flash your build kernel (OG5) BEFORE you exit SS.

Download towel root app and install. You are now rooted. Install safe strap 3.75 from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2517610
Now you have custom recovery. You can now install custom TW rooms from the VZ android development thread.
^^^^this but if you have NC4 out the box Jasmine Rom is the only one that supports NC4 kernel. You can odin the NC2 kernel and flash any TouchWiz rom.
You can do it I did no problems, easy as it can get. Also install Super SU and busybox, don't forget to run them.

After you run towel root and you're rooted you then install busy box then safe strap. Most custom roms have busy box installed already.
Greetings people on this forum, I just wanted to find out how to check the Bootloader status on my Note 3.
I bought this phone yesterday, and I thought I bought the Exynos version but apparently I got the Snapdragon 800 version signed to Verizon. Though I have my suspicions about my seller because they sold it to me in the spanish text box, stating it had the Exynos octacore chip inside. But I'm happy that it's not that version because the Snapdragon is better lol
It's the 32gb variant and I've been looking through the forums and saw the device has Cyanogenmod 11, but requires the Developer edition of the phone. Now I have absolutely no idea how to check bootloader status, which is why I'm posting here.
As you know, the model number is the SM N900V.
Any other information could be provided.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated

behind the battery it will say developer version or something like that while running you can use an app called Cpu-z to tell you much of the information you need to know and if you could tell us what version of android is running on it now we can tell you how screwed you are.
it should say something like this under baseband.
N900VVRUCNC4
If it says N900VVRUCNK1 and your android version is 4.4.4 your boned no root no roms.
nc4 has a slim glimmer of hope in that they forgot to blacklist the nc2 kernel and thus we have a way in with roms but as of yet there is no way to root NK1

I surmise that you want to know if your bootloader is locked or unlocked, correct?
Developer Edition phones have an unlocked bootloader. If you have a developer edition I would think you would have been so aware upon purchase. A seller would have made such a selling point.
If you have a Developer Edition, you will be able to use TWRP "recovery" to flash Cyanogen MOD. Of course, your phone will need to be rooted. Note, you will be limited to ROMs made exclusively for the Developer Edition.
Re Cyanogen Mod, if you have a Developer Edition you will be able to flash CM. If you do not then you will be somewhat limited
Cyanogen MOD for Dev Ed:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2600883
Jfyi, Verizon phones have a locked bootloader.
Fortunately, a forum member has provided a work-around recovery: Safestrap; which can be used to flash ROMs. Of course, your phone must be rooted. Though, because the bootloader is locked you will be limited in the (non-Dev Ed) roms and kernals available for use.

You do not have a dev version so cm 11 or 12 is a far off dream you won't get. Your bootloader is locked there is no unlock.
You are in luck nc4 is root able using towel root then safe strap and the unified firmware. You will need odin and a pc for flashing a few things the NK1 modem towel root and the unified firmware. Pick a rom from the development thread i suggest jasmine 1.x or eclipse.

No. It probably means you have upgraded your phone to a point where root is not attainable. Go into About Phone and see what version of the Android OS you are running. If it is 4.4.4, their is no root available for that.
Root and Bootloader are two different things. Bootloader is locked on our device as well.

Cannot save or install ROMs - Rooted, SafeStrap installed, Knox OK
Howdy, folks!
My Verizon Note 3 details: SM-N900V / Android 4.4.2 / Kernel 3.4.0-1487472 / build version NC4 / bootloader NC4 / Knox = 0x0.
Device is rooted (via TowelRoot and confirmed with Titanium Backup). SafeStrap 3.75 is "Installed". BusyBox 1.232 is installed.
As I understand it, in order to save or install ROMs I *must* use SafeStrap.
When I run SafeStrap the screen shows "State: Installed" and "Safe System: Not Active".
Tapping "Reboot to Recovery" does reboot the phone but I do NOT get any options to save or install any ROMs. The phone just reboots.
I thought I read somewhere I may need to (somehow) roll back to NC2...
Any ideas, folks?
Thanks!

You must have busybox installed for the safestrap install to truly work. So...install busybox, reboot, re-install safestrap, reboot and should now be able to reboot into safestrap recovery.

FIXED!
Instead of removing SafeStrap to do clean reinstalls I just installed SafeStrap over itself.
Okay so I've been browsing through the forums and been reading up on this phone (even contacted Samsung about info on unlocking the bootloader, no go on that. Had to try though)
Basically I want to know what's the proper procedure for installing custom roms on an NC4 device 4.4.2
Things I know:
Bootloader is unlockable at the moment (hoping for some good news in the future)
Towelroot for rooting
Safestrap for recovery
(Both just download and install the apk)
Things I don't know:
Kernel?
Somebody said I had to flash the NC2 kernel via Odin?
Knox?
What is this? What trips it?
I did see the list of guides and I did read and watch all the necessary ones, but the date on those are from 2 years ago and I just need confirmation on if I'm going about this right.
Any help is appreciated. I thank you in advance for taking the time to read this.
Please excuse my lack of knowledge, this is my first Samsung device.
Also, what would happen if somebody were to flash the DE stock files via Odin to a Retail N3?
If you upgraded to NC4 or NK1, you're stuck until Samsung unlocks the bootloader or Verizon stops lying to their customers. There is no root available after upgrade at this moment in time.

My opinion: If you're doing a custom kernel, make sure it works with whatever ROM you're flashing. I suggest sticking with the stock kernel* until you get the hang of things OR do a little research and learn a bit before you attempt anything. There's a lot of forums with details and help here. I've installed kernels before and after installing ROMs with little or zero problems, but I'm more of a dabbler than a professional.
I would suggest backing up your current setup in case you need to reflash. That's a definite.

It really depends on the ROM, there is no set guide for all ROMs.
Did you install busybox? I like using busybox on rails. Just download the app and click install.
Download the safestrap apk (3.75 B04) and install that, open it and install recovery.
I'm currently running Clean ROM. I am on NC4. I downloaded the rom, and moved it to my SD card. I rebooted to safestrap, wiped data, cache and dalvik then installed the ROM to the stock slot. Then, following the instructions for Clean ROM, I rebooted to download mode from recovery and flashed the NC2 Kernel with odin.
The main thing is to read the installation instructions for the particular ROM you want to flash.
Don't forget to use Titanium backup to freeze SDM app (I think that's what its called) so your phone will stop trying to update.

Thanks man, I was supposed to update this thread saying that I got through with the proper procedure for installing Jasmine Rom
Although I was running Eclipse before, and I wanted to try going back to stock but it just got stuck on the Verizon splash screen
I'm thinking it's because I had the NC2 kernel active when I should have gone back to the NC4 kernel
I looked for a NC4 kernel to flash but I only saw the modems and tar files, so not knowing if those were the same as kernels I decided to just try Jasmine. So far, I like it.
I have crazy battery drain though. I think it's because I'm running it in Slot 1

I'd be happy to answer your questions
If you have an NC4 device that's running 4.4.2, you are able to gain root access and install safestrap recovery on your device. However, if the android version is 4.4.4, you cannot root or install safestrap.
NC4 is just our last build number, but there are two versions I think, the 4.4.2 and the 4.4.4. In the 4.4.4, they blacklisted every single compatible kernel that could work on the device. They forgot to do it in the 4.4.2 version, that's why we're able to gain root.
On our NC4 4.4.2 Verizon Note 3, we can root, install safestrap recovery and install a very limited amount of roms from the non developer edition selection on the XDA forums.
Rooting via towelroot, to my knowledge, does not trip knox. However, installing safestrap recovery does. But if you're worried about your warranty being voided, I wouldn't panic too much because with our bootloader being locked, it is very easy to flash the original Stock Verizon files through Odin to go straight back to factory settings so it looks like if you just pulled it out the box. The knox code would be reset and you would have a device that looked like if it has never been rooted or modified.

It will say custom, but that isn't tripping knox. Custom can be removed with the triangle away app. Custom just gets flagged like you were saying by changing the recovery , but it doesn't trip the knox counter.

Then I must be confused about what knox really is.
What is "Knox" then?
Hi. Using a CID11 device w/ KINGROOT/SAFESTRAP
I know the bootloader is locked and all, but will I still be able to use CyanogenMod 13 ?
http://download.cyanogenmod.org/?device=kltevzw
I know this is a noob question as the S5 is pretty locked down now 'geocold' is helping the enemy, but is it still at all possible to use CM13 with this safe strap option on a CID11 device.
also is there any other ROMs I could use that are similar with any kind of custom kernel that helps preserve battery life like in the past or is that a no now since the bootloader is locked.
lastly will I loose root if I can do any of the above.
....
very new to the S5 please bare with me lol

You shouldn't lose any data but a backup is always wise
According to the thread you have to be on rooted PB1 firmware and use safestrap
The guide is specific so follow his guide exactly
I would do a back up in Samsung Smart Switch or Samsung kies 3 before you use or use safestrap backup whatever you prefer

Oh ok, yeah since I'm on OK3 will I need to do the whole KingRoot method again? or if I flash to PB1 from ODIN will I still keep root/safestrap/bb not sure how this all works just started using the S5 today.
Also once that is all done, and I'm on a rooted PB1 ... I'll be able to flash threw safestrap to a MM 6.0.1 ROM ? but when I do this wont I loose root? and I thought root not able to be obtained on MM 6.0.1 with CID11 devices? this is where it gets to be confusing for me, sorry for all the questions

You will lose root if you go up to cm13 using this method
If you need root then the linked method above may not be for you

Yes I can not use android with out root lol, but thanks for showing me all this anyways its progress I guess, not sure if this handset was worth the money now knowing all this, but I'll stick with it.
I see no point in even bothering to run CM13 or any custom rom really with out the use of root. ehhhh anyway. Backing up my apk/data using a snazzy lil app called MyBackup Pro. for the migration.
Thanks for the help. Looks like I'll be staying on the 5.0 OK3 rom then since at least I have it rooted, and some kind of recovery even tho the whole safestrap touchwiz thing is not pleasing its better than nothing.
I have a Verizon Galaxy S5 (G900V) that I rooted a couple of years ago and never updated any further. It's currently running 4.4.4 / NK2 and I've been looking at upgrading to a Lollipop build. I have the Toshiba 11x eMMC so it doesn't sound like Marshmallow is an option if I want to keep root. I've spent significant time rooting through the forums and I can't seem to find a method to update my phone from KitKat to Lollipop (while keeping root) that is current, has the necessary files available to download, and works. Using FlashFire and G900V_OE1_Stock_Rooted_ROM.zip followed by Odin and an OD5 bootloader is failing on my phone for whatever reason. The other methods, including muniz_ri's, don't seem to have current files available for download.
I've fried my brain searching with no success. If anyone could point me to current directions/files to upgrade from KitKat to a solid Lollipop build while maintaining my root access, it would be GREATLY appreciated.
Thank you.
I would Odin this file https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=24438995911970571
That will take you to stock PB1 then follow this guide to get root https://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-galaxy-s5/general/root-method-og5-ok3-t3290370
Then I would use flash fire or LP safe strap to flash a ROM I recommended
https://forum.xda-developers.com/ve...ang5litre-edition-5-0-pb1-devnon-dev-t3381850 or https://forum.xda-developers.com/ve...enix-rom-9-0-ported-g900v-ported-rom-t3188443

So if I'm reading that correctly, I can skip to step #9 of the "Directions For Users With CID 11' Toshiba eMMC" section and then use the EMMC_11_PB1_5_0_1_LL_Firmware_Bootloader.zip and VZW_BPB1_ODEX_DEODEX_V9.zip files. Is that correct?

Yes. You must have safestrap and use it to flash EMMC_11_PB1_5_0_1_LL_Firmware_Bootloader.zip and rom

Success! Now on 5.0 and PB1 with no significant issues during or after the upgrade.
Many thanks!

Let me add a caveat to that success story. I do notice that I don't have the Safestrap recovery option during the boot up process and it looks like this is expected behavior for Lollipop. The "Reboot to Recovery" option with the app is also not active or functional. What's the best way to get back the full Safestrap functionality? I found the below thread of yours but I'm not sure if the files and instructions are current. Thoughts?

I think I see where I went wrong with Safestrap but it's going to be a little while before I can investigate further. Don't want to brick my phone at work and not be able to phone home.
I'll update after I do some more troubleshooting.
Thanks again.
