Friends--
If you're like me, you've found the native 'ok google' prompt to be a much faster / more elegant solution on lollipop than the moto middleman.
We can disable the moto software and enable the google implementation, however we are never given the option for it to work while the screen is off (and unplugged). We know that the hardware is there, so I am assuming that there is a flag somewhere that we need to change.
I'm going to start exploring on my own, but anyone else who can help look / has ideas on where to look, i figured this thread could be a group development project on this.
Looking forward to this!

After disabling Moto Voice, go to the Google Settings app -> Search & Now -> Voice -> "Ok Google" Detection.
There you can set "Ok Google" to respond then the device is locked.

It's terrible and unfair! Motorola says they are giving the "Pure" Android Experience, no bloatware, just adding "Value Added" Software. Thank you Motorola, but give me a CHOICE! If you are FORCING your software on me, you are no better than Verizon!
This phone HAS the Instant On Hardware, and Lollipop Fully supports it. Again, thank you Motorola for your enhancements to Google Now (for those that like them). BUT for those of us that that don't, crippling Android Functionality is NOT the answer!!!

I look forward to your findings. Being able to use Ok Google from the screen off state -while- unplugged would be nice to have. I'd bet dollar to doughnuts that moto disabled the necessary flag in order to allow their Voice middleware to function properly - without giving it the ability to set it back when Voice is disabled.
I think I've read something somewhere about flag 199? It's likely I'm mistaken though.

I realize that it does have the hardware....that is proprietary to Motorola. I was suggesting that you find a different phone that suits your needs.

So, back to being helpful. Have you tried tasker at all? I know there is a way with xposed and tasker, but we don't have xposed as of yet...

The hardware in the Moto X 2014 was designed to work with Motorola's implementation of screen-off voice recognition. Unfortunately the phone came out just a little too early to have the "standard" Google implementation since phones supporting that did not start coming out until ~1 month later.
It's not that easy
The X8 processing core in this device comes with a Natural Language Computing Processor NLCP core built in, which is a proprietary low power implementation. Therefore, the software portion that handles the output from the core is custom made by Motorola, and is not something that you find in the Android source tree, because a low power LCP core like the X8 never existed before. Similarly, the 'Ok Google' implementation is Google's proprietary implementation, part of the Google Suite of Applications, only to be installed as add-ons on devices that are compatible with 'Android Compatibility Definition Document'. The apps provided by Google usually do not undergo any OEM customizations.
To conclude, it's not as easy as enabling/ disabling a flag in the Android source to link to proprietary implementations from different vendors together.
P.S - Google's 'Ok Google' may work from from all the screens including a secure lock screen, but it cannot leverage the low power LCP core. This will impact your battery life !!!

Yeah got it to work yesterday (with the screen off) for about 2 hours. Then it started not to work at all. Went back to Moto native app and its hit and miss with the app. hopefully it get fix cause its pretty annoying that the reason why i got this phone is because of this feature.
Not only the response is slower and unstable but it is limited to a single person..
Native ok google never fails... Its quicker.. And allows my girlfriend to give commands to the phone on the car along with me...

Its the exact same chip. We should be able to have that feature working on ours as well. We'd have a better chance if we reach out to Motorola to make it possible. Just like switching on the ambient display, they should let us chose between google now or moto voice!

Same as before; roll-out is staggered so not everyone will auto-download it on day-1. Could try calling *#*#checkin#*#* & see if that kicks it in... didn't for me though. Hence the hope someone posts the file so it can be manually installed

disagree. This will allow users to share contact info directly from phone to phone. it will also allow you to write to NFC tags which can be very cool. So for example, I have a watch I wear that is a NFC tag with 4k of memory. With the new release I can write change the content of what is on that tag. Right now I keep it as my contact info.
Who said major bugs won't be fixed? Clearly google decided to showcase 2.3.3 because of the NFC thing. Fixed bugs has never been showcased in change logs by google. So there is still hope!!!
I once had the idea of using NFC as input for password, like an electronic key. This will allow greater convenience once device level encryption is supported. I hope this can be realized some day.

The hardware supports it. NFC with a secure element provides a new level of security. Just needs to be implemented in items. they already have house locks and car door locks that use this type of system. Just need PCs to adopt it too.

My understanding is that technology uses RFID not NFC.

Is it possible to create a setup that will allow me to feed all my questions into Google search without touch? I want to imitate the new feature from the moto X phone where I can say a hotword at anytime and I will be able to search Google now. I.e: OK Google Now: "who founded Google?" To which it would feed that as a Google search command and return the result as i had normally used Google voice search

Just be patience and wait a few weeks.
I´m sure some developers (and Google itself) will port this feature to the nexus 4
If they even Google make this feature for the Nexus devices, I prolly won't use it because it'll prolly eat too much battery. It has to be on all the time trying to listen to your voice. Plus if you don't use Google now search feature often this feature won't benefit you.

yes you can do it combining 2 apps , tasker and autovoice.
Hopefully the ROM is ported since the dual moto x is optimized significantly better than the wasteland software Google put in this thing. The optimization is so ridiculous that the dual krait outperforms the quad S600. Yes the moto x is faster cause the moto engineers don't just push device into the market free fall style. /morning rant

But you still need some kind of trigger.
The "magic" of the moto X is the "always on" microphone with a special DSP which is capable to do the voice recognition while consuming next to nothing of energy. While current phones would be forced to do this via general CPU and would kill a battery in a pinch.
Depending on the implementation this even could be a win for privacy, since the processing is taking place locally in the phone and not somewhere "in the cloud". I would be very uncomfortable with a phone which constantly listens to me and relays it to the el goog, microsoft, apple or somebody else.

Its an updated Google now...I received the update this morning then when you open up Google now there is a slide informing you to say OK Google now and some sample questions. Even before the update all you need to do is say Google and you can speak to it.

He didn't ask if it will consume more battery on a nexus4, the same as i didn't ask why the hell would anyone want to put his nexus4 in an "always listening" mode, he wanted to know if it was possible to implement
And you don't need a trigger with the combination i mentioned, voice commands work even with screen off.

And you're basing that performance from a crappy benchmark that couldn't even see the device had a dual core chip.

Hmm, I have heard that one before. Remember when Google Now first came out? There will all sorts of rumors that it could only run on certain phones and so forth. Do we have any evidence to point otherwise in this case?

This is probably the closest we have to Touchless Controls as of now.
As a proud Nexus 4 owner, running the Nexus 5's Google Experience Launcher, and unrooted, I can categorically declare that the Nexus 5's touchless control with the always on "ok google" hotword detection works flawlessly on the Nexus 4.
You need to make sure you have the GEL apk file installed, and the latest play store update of Google Search.
You need to make sure your voice search settings are set to US English (just like on the N5).
Admittedly, if you, like me, installed the packages from the N5 system dump, you would have found that the hotword worked, but the search would crash.
However that seems to be fixed and working perfectly in the latest Play Store Google Search update, which incorporates the GEL in its code.
So you just need those three requirements I've listed above, and the touchless control ought to work perfectly on the Nexus 4.

I see, my bad, I've seen similar things posted about the N5 as well... People saying the N5's version of touchless control being hardware dependent, and not available on the N4.
Just got over excited about getting it to work on my N4, hah!

Some MotoX feature is still possible. If you used the latest AOKP nightly (for 4.3) they developed their own ActiveDisplay feature.
Since the G2 has a S800 processor, which includes an "always listening" feature, I was wondering if it would be possible to port Motorola's Touchless Control feature to the device.
Also since the X8 processor the Moto X has includes the "always listening" core from the S800 I thought perhaps it wouldn't be too hard to achieve this.

I would assume that this app could be at least linked in place of voice mate. While wet might not be able to wake her up with a phrase from sleep the results would be much better.

Would that be easy to achieve?
Because I figured since the Moto X's X8 chip contain the S800's "always listening" core perhaps it would be possible to port it to the G2 and other S800 phones.
Here's instructions on porting moto active notifications with code I think. I'm not knowledgable in this area, but would be a GR8 addition to a G2 rom.... anyone wanna give it a shot?

Isn't active notifications different than the the voice controls?
But this would be a cool addition to the G2 if it's done well.

looks like you'd need a custom kernel that activated active listening on the g2
I would definitely love to use it as well... Have you thought about starting a bounty thread for this one? I suppose a lot of ppl would like to donate it...

not sure if this has been discussed yet (could not find much in net either) but some say that the ok google voice commands is not available on the htc one m8. i got mine yesterday through telstra (australia) and have everything stock. today by pure accident i discovered that if you hold the home button down an option to swipe up to google appears. also when in lock screen there is a arrow below the lock symbol that does the same thing. it doesnt seem to be always active like other phones but at least it is there and it works.
ps. absolutely love this phone. upgraded from htc one xl (australian 4g one x) and have to say what a massively huge improvement.

So I take it the search widget doesn't work like the Nexus 5 homescreen? The S5 does...
Maybe, I did see someone demonstrate it very quickly but its not a widget I use and did feel inconsistant!
It won't wake up the device as we see on the Moto X at least.
Theres an app called open mic in the app store that lets you wake up pretty much any phone on jb+ via voice command to google search ill text people by talking to my pocket if i put the sensitivity to max but it wakes up to alot no matter what your wakeup phrase is "you can change it.".
You'll be able to activate it from your homescreen if you were to install the GEL launcher. If, however, you wish to keep Sense then you'll either need to do without it or use one of the apps like Open Mic (mentioned above) to do so

Correct, but the M7 with its less buttons used to have a few options, this time around you get what you are given

not sure if this has been discussed yet (could not find much in net either) but some say that the ok google voice commands is not available on the htc one m8. i got mine yesterday through telstra (australia) and have everything stock. today by pure accident i discovered that if you hold the home button down an option to swipe up to google appears. also when in lock screen there is a arrow below the lock symbol that does the same thing. it doesnt seem to be always active like other phones but at least it is there and it works.
ps. absolutely love this phone. upgraded from htc one xl (australian 4g one x) and have to say what a massively huge improvement.

Can'you add the Google now widget to the home screen? I like that feature. I don't have the m8 (yet)... Just curious.

Widgets are still avaliable.
What is different is with the M7 with physical buttons, you could swipe up from the home button, or long press depending on your settings.
With the M8 with virtual buttons you just swipe up from the home button just like you do on the nexus devices.
Basically the buttons and google now behave like they do on a nexus.

I found this by accident too. I was happy about it.
You can also install the google now launcher if you want it to always be active. The search widget doesn't listen unless yo tap the mike icon.
So how can the S5 have hotword detection active on the touchwiz launcher ? Can that functionality be brought to Sense?

It's up to the OEM to include that. Samsung decided to make that part of the SOC active for listening while HTC did not, probably out of battery concerns.

But it works with the GEL launcher. In the M8. I wonder if it's something a Dev could implement
HTC one Google edition has this if u want that feature buy the Google edition ppl ***** about everything

Everyone know it was only $50 more at the time and also everyone know only the Google edition will have that feature if they were reading correctly
