I was rooted on my SPG511 with locked bootloader, having used TowelRoot12.2. I was using the paid version of SuperSU and had enabled Survival Mode.
I just took the OTA to 4.4.4 and much to my surprise I still had root after the upgrade! So that's good news... Let me know if you have any questions....

Do you still have rw access to /system?
ES Explorer says I have r/w access to /system but I'm not sure how to test this
Gonna give the same thing a shot and see what it does to me...

Simply test it with any app need root, e.g. Titanium Backup, Lucky Patcher or etc, to see if these app still works.

Interesting! What version were you on exactly and what did you update to? In the update to 17.1.2.A.0.314 I lost root even though I had the paid version of SuperSu and survival mode enabled. I currently have the update to 23.0.1.A.430 pending and I fear losing root with no means to get it again without unlocking my bootloader.
i also had the paid and lost root, i just found a prerooted flashable and i'm going to use that
I just updated from .314 to .167 and I didn't lose root. Tb and all other root apps still working fine. I have PRO version of SuperSU.
Edit:I didin't even have PRO version of SuperSU.. Root still working

You will have to flash back to 2.3.2 then root with gingerbreak...
But here is a whole thread on how to unlock bootloader/root - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1043630
Here is how you unlock your boot loader - http://unlockbootloader.sonyericsson.com/instructions

An unlocked bootloader allows you to issue fastboot commands to your device. It has nothing to do with root. Although it can be used to attain root easer

Right download the .184 firmware here:
http://www.multiupload.com/MDS10FFGTT
And download Flashtool from here:
http://www.multiupload.com/7H4JT35B6G
Unpack the .tft file and place it in the firmware folder of the extracted flashtool application.
Install the gordons gate flash drivers that come with flashtool.
run flashtool, click on flash, choose the .184 .tft file. And follow the onscreen instructions.

Since you are rooted. Get Adfree from the market. It will block adverts on free games, browsing the web etc. Very useful app to have.
If you uninstall apps you cannot use ota again to upgrade to 2.3.4 when its out and still keep root (since all the bloatware needs to be still on the phone for an ota update to work)
I personally freeze the apps i dont want. It stops them from running and frees up ram (making the phone bootup faster, better battery life, all the perks that uninstalling them would give you) but it will not free up internal memory since you are not unistalling the app its still on your phone it just will not run while it is frozen. You would then just unfreeze them to use ota.
If you uninstall them you will either have to reflash again (to get back what you uninstalled, it will also wipe your phone clean again) then root again to use ota and keep root.
Anyways i use Bloat Freezer (which you have to pay for only £0.60 tho) or if you just want to uninstall apps the best to use would be Titanium Backup the free version allows you to uninstall apps. You can also use Titanium Backup to freeze apps but thats only in the paid version.
See here for the thread on what is safe to uninstall or freeze.
i flashed R800i 4.0.A.2.368 UK (newest firmware with xLoud etc) using flashtool and simply used flashtool to root it aswell, worked a treat

I did some searching of the forums, but didn't find what I was looking for. I have an AT&T S4, currently on the MDL firmware and rooted with TWRP. So that puts me two updates behind now and I'd really like to update.
So the question is, what would be the best way to go about updating to the latest official firmware, while retaining root? I can do without recovery if necessary, but I really want to keep root. I'd prefer to do this in a way where I avoid having to do a clean install and back up everything, then restore. I'd like to update in a way that keeps settings and applications as they are, as an official OTA update would do.
Is this possible?
Stay where you are and run a custom firmware!

I thought about it, but I actually like the Touchwiz ROMs, as odd as it may sound.
Why you flash a custom touch wiz rom? Trust me, only being able to root in a still sketchy/kinda legimate way is not worth it

I want the official Samsung update, just with root capability. So that I can still use programs which require root (such as TitaniumBackup, Avast's Anti-Theft, AdAway, GameKiller, etc.). I've seen on the forums that people have proceeded to the latest update while retaining their root, but I haven't found how yet.

Just wait, run StockUp, or a 4.3 rom for the international version. If you want Touchwiz, you can get one of those and if you really want the OTA wait until someone creates a version that doesn't update your bootloader so you can still have the option to change. If you really do want it, then flash the stock firmware and go through the updates, making sure you root after you get MF3 and then use SuperSU survival before updating to MK2.

Is there now a way to retain root when updating from MDL to MF3 via OTA? Becuase I already am stock, I just need to unfreeze the files that allow for OTA updating.
Yes there is a way.use Supersu pro and enable Survival mode and it will retain root .we would all move the world to go back to MDL is why people are trying to persuade you to use a rom. (ENVY)

Updates usualy remove root, you could try enabling the survival mode in the superSU app if you have the paid superSU Pro. This should keep your phone rooted after an update.

You can easily run easy root and root it via towel root.

So you mean, from now on installing SuperSU manually by downloading it on http://download.chainfire.eu/396/SuperSU/ and just going on Google Play and installing SuperSU from there are the same thing? I remember there was some issues between these two methods.
And another question; going on towelroot.com and installing tr.apk manually has the same effect with using Easy Root Tool?
Thank you.

Hello,
So to clarify a little bit this method.
You have to install the SuperSu from Google Play Market and that's it, you can have ROOT on your Xperia Z2?
And if I don't want anymore to have ROOT on my Z2, simply remove the apk and you are without ROOT?
Thank you in advance!
Problem with Super SU
Hi everybody,
I did the following:
Downloaded tr.apk from towelroot.com
Installed and started it
Got "you got root" message
Went to Play-store and installed SuperSU
Started it and got error-message: "Could not install SU-file"
Updated with apk from chainfire
Stated SuperSU again and still got the error again
What am I doing wrong?
Thanks in advance
Georg

I just rooted my z2 similar to how you describe using easyroot v8 however as you said because tr was updated it no longer worked, couldnt recognise it.
i found this link in another thread http://www.mediafire.com/download/hath2562jyxipo3/tr.apk. once downloaded, put this tr apk in the files directory of the extracted easyroot, click on the install.bat file, follow the prompts etc and you'll fine it will work (well it did for me), then of course install supersu etc

This has been asked and answered (a lot of times) before. So almost any forum search would have answered your questions.
Updates usually break root. So that is expected behaviour. If you value root, you should probably be blocking the OTA updater app. Ironically enough, the update your chose also blocks the Towel root exploit. You can use Odin to reinstall a pre June 3rd build of the correct stock firmware which remains amenable to Towel root.

No. And I don't see a rationale for thinking that might be viable. A factory data reset wipes the /data partition i.e. user settings /apps. Whereas root is configured in the system files.

I have the update available but I didn't flash yet because I want to keep root.
Is an unlocked bootloader required to use Mobil Odin Pro to flash the Latest update?
I have a VZW SM-G900V, Rooted, Stock OS, Locked Bootloader and no Custom Recovery installed.
Update Edit:
Please disregard this question: Mobil Odin Pro does not support the SM-G900V yet.
Ep://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1347899[/url]
Also it should be noted that Mobil Odin Pro will not launch at all if the device is running with ART Runtime System enabled. It will only force crash with every attempt. It will launch with DALVIK Runtime System enabled however it will only post a message of incompatibility with only the option of creating a system dump file for the developer!
