Can I use Nexus 5 charger with Nexus 4? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Can I use the charger of a Nexus 5 with Nexus 4? what does it matter most output or amperage?
Safety is my primary concern.
Thanks.

If the connector it's the same then yes, of course you can. The connector is a standart so they have the same on every device. If you wanna concern those stuffs then just use the original ones, not the cheapest and fake ones, use original chargers

Yea you can. The phone limits the rate to what it needs.

[Q] Using Gnex charger with my Nex7 (and vice versa)

Hi,
I just bought a Nexus 7 and noticed that it has a different charger than the Android smartphones I have, e.g. Nexus S and Galaxy Nexus. However, the connection is still the same.
My question is, is it safe to use a smartphone charger with my Nexus 7, just to have less stuff lying around? Is it safe to use the 7's charger with my smartphone? Will I break my devices if I do it?
Thanks!
Perfectly safe. The Nexus charger puts out slightly more current than most phones, worst case it will charge them slightly faster, just as a phone charger will be a little shower with the tablet.

You won't break your devices, but it would take an extraordinarily long time to charge your N7 with the phone's charger. Conversely, the phone is not going to charge exponentially faster using the tab's charger. So, all in all, wile it's not ideal, you won't be hurting anything.

So I can just keep my Nexus 7 charger and use it for every other gadget, and put the other chargers into a drawer? That's nice to know, thanks guys.

The phone won't charge any faster using the N7 charger, but the tablet on the phone charger would be significantly slower- to the point that even moderate use while plugged in would result in still draining the battery. Assuming no use while charging, the tablet would require several hours more than normal for a full charge.

I disagree, my galaxy prevail charges twice as fast on my n7 charger than with a standard phone/car charger. However my n7 does take forever on the phone/car charger. Literally like 8hrs+ to reach 100%.

Check the 'mA' or 'A' rating on the charger.. The higher it is, the faster it will charge.
the charger I got bundled with Nexus 7 is outputing 2A (2000mA to be exact), which is quite higher than most phone chargers
(I've got chargers with standard 500mA & with 800mA).
I've been using the Nexus 7 charger for charging my ZTE Blade and nothing seems wrong using it..
A phone's charging circuit will automatically restrict the current to the specs needed by the phone.
PS: 'A' stands for 'Amperes' & 'mA' stands for 'milli Amperes ', both are units of measuring current.

[Q] HELP! Using Nexus 7 Wall Charger on Nexus 4?

Hi, there. Can someone help me on this issue please, I am new here.
I have a Nexus 7 Wall charger at 5V 2AMPS and I want to use it on my Nexus 4 5V 1.2A. Would it be okay to do so, without damaging the battery? Does the kernels control how much current goes to the Nexus 4?
I have no choice but use the Nexus 7 Wall charger because the one that came with Nexus 4 was defected. I called Google but they said I would have to return the whole thing, but I don't want to since, who knows, the Next one may have a bad phone instead.
Google Play told me using other phone adapter would be fine, but they didn't know about Nexus 7 Wall Charger.
It would be great if someone could give me some advice, Thank You!

It will work, most phones would limit the power draw from the source to make sure battery charge at the proper rate. If you use a custom kernel with fast charge enabled, you will degrade the battery quicker.
I've used about 6 different chargers on this, gnex, and others including the nexus 7. They all work fine, but slower ones just charge slower.

Looking for an additional 1.2 amp charger.

I tried calling Google Play device support. They said they don't replace chargers, and I should just use a standard micro USB cable and wall charger. The problem is, I have not been able to find a 1.2 Amp charger of any kind. Anything lower will charge the phone more slowly, and from what I understand, unless it's properly shorted out (I think), anything higher will not necessarily work properly with certain devices.
Can somebody please help me find a good replacement charger that won't charge the phone more slowly than the one the phone came with?
I believe Ipad chargers do 2amps, or try a 1amp charger since i haven't seen more than 880ma from my battery widget when charging it.
What about this? http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0073FCPSK/
USB Port 1 (Designed for Apple products) Compatibility
iPad @ 2 Ampere Max.
iPhone / iPod Touch @ 1 Ampere Max.
Others phones / GPS / Tablet etc. @ 0.5 to 1 Ampere Max. (May not support charging of some devices)
USB Port 2 (port close to LED, designed for non apple products) Compatibility
iPad @ NOT Compatible
iPhone / iPod Touch @ 0.5 Ampere Max.
Others phones / GPS / Tablet etc. @ 1 to 2 Ampere Max.
Would the non-Apple port work?
Somebody mentioned this to me on another forum: you gotta be careful with those dual chargers. sometimes the higher current port is limited to apple devices (i think they have a couple pins in the cable shorted)
What exactly does that mean? The product I linked to, does it have this problem?
Disregard, forgot what section I was in!
Just do what was suggested at LL.
that was not helpful at all. I made a topic here for a reason, LL was being completely unhelpful
I just got the blackberry 1.8 amp micro USB charger and it works great.

Anybody know about that PowerGen Dual USB charger I linked to? I just remembered I actually already have one of those. It'd be nice to just use that one.
I'll be honest. I don't like that Blackberry charger because you can't remove the USB cable from it.
Get the amazonbasics wall charger is 1.2 amps.

That's the sole reason I got it for. I don't need to remove it because this charger stays at work.

No it's not gonna hurt the battery. The phone (or better a battery controller) controls the current that reaches the battery. So no matter how powerful a charger would be it will not charge above a certain current.

I know best buy has those exact amp chargers. I work in the PC department and I see them all the time. By rocketfish. They should be in with the Stylus's. Which are always with the iPad or iPad mini cases.

I am also looking for charger, to have 1 in home and 1 at work. Is there chance to get LG 1.2 amp Europe standart (not UK)?
1.2 amp vs 1.8
Hey guys just out of curiosity... I was wondering how much better a 1.8 amp charger is then a 1.2 amp... I have a nexus 5 my dad has a g2 he didn't even take out the g2's charger so I decided to rob His LOL and trade with him... How many minutes would be saved...

The phone is only going to pull as much current as it can and needs so a larger charger isn't going to make any difference

Nokia AC-10x is 1.2A, it's a good quality charger.

Lost my charger. Which one to buy?

Self explanatory really. I realise any micro USB charger will fit, but I've read that of the voltage / amperage doesn't match, it can fry the phone. How true that is I don't know, but I don't want to risk it. I asked LG, and they directed me to their spares and accessories website. Initially it looked promising, but it turned out the website was terrible, was no info about anything.
I've had a look to find other 5V 1.2a (the specs of the charger that comes with the phone) micro USB chargers, but not had much luck. Any chance anyone could send me a link to a charger that matches the nexus charger? That would be very much appreciated.

I read something that said if you use a charger with a higher amp, that won't cause any problems at all. Is that true? So I could use a 5V 2a charger with the nexus 4 (the original charger was 5v 1.2a)?
The reason I'm so concerned is that when I use my HTC Desire charger (5v 1a), the screen stops working properly. I used it all the time when I first got my phone and the battery in the phone died, and I had to get it replaced. I don't want that to happen again, so I don't want to use a charger with different amp output.

Yes, that's true. The phone will only draw the current that it needs. A 2A charger won't "push" the whole 2A to the phone, the phone will just "pull" the 0.8A or so that it needs.

Order the Nexus 4 Wireless Charging Orb - Comes with Wall Charger & USB Cable (probably way Google doesn't just sell the Charger/Cable - to push the Orb)

Exactly. The amperage rating is what the charger can output based on demand of its load.

N7 Charger on N4

I think i know the answer but i am just after a bit of reassurance.
Is it ok to charge my Nexus 4 using the Nexus 7 charger given the extra current involved?
My understanding is the Nexus 4 will just ignore the extra output but i would feel much better if this could be verified and backed up.
Yes it's fine because it's the phone that decides how much current to draw from the charger.

Cheers, thats what i thought but best to be safe, thanks
