Hi, there. Can someone help me on this issue please, I am new here.
I have a Nexus 7 Wall charger at 5V 2AMPS and I want to use it on my Nexus 4 5V 1.2A. Would it be okay to do so, without damaging the battery? Does the kernels control how much current goes to the Nexus 4?
I have no choice but use the Nexus 7 Wall charger because the one that came with Nexus 4 was defected. I called Google but they said I would have to return the whole thing, but I don't want to since, who knows, the Next one may have a bad phone instead.
Google Play told me using other phone adapter would be fine, but they didn't know about Nexus 7 Wall Charger.
It would be great if someone could give me some advice, Thank You!

It will work, most phones would limit the power draw from the source to make sure battery charge at the proper rate. If you use a custom kernel with fast charge enabled, you will degrade the battery quicker.
I've used about 6 different chargers on this, gnex, and others including the nexus 7. They all work fine, but slower ones just charge slower.

Unfortunately I left my Nexus 7 charger in a hotel room a month ago and it has not yet been handed in. Consequently I have had to buy an off the shelf charger. One I tried stated that it was rated at 2 AMPS, and it does work, but at about 1.5-2x the charging time as the stock charger. I also noted that when using that charger the Nexus system did not say it was charging, although it obviously was.
I just obtained another charger rated at 2.5 AMPS and it performs exactly as the stock charger. Has anyone else noted this - that if the charger outputs less than 2 AMPS the Nexus 7 does not notify the use that it is charging and does so at a much slower rate?

My understanding - the charger has to let the device know it supports high current mode. Otherwise the Nexus limits it to 500 ma, which is correct for a cable plugged into a computer.

This is true; the same method applies to samsung chargers. There has to be 5v on one of the data lines as well to let the device now it should change to high-power mode.
Search for a tutorial on what to solder together inside of the charger or buy an official samsung charger of at least 1A (I believe Galaxy S2 chargers have that output).

I just bought a Nexus 7 and noticed that it has a different charger than the Android smartphones I have, e.g. Nexus S and Galaxy Nexus. However, the connection is still the same.
My question is, is it safe to use a smartphone charger with my Nexus 7, just to have less stuff lying around? Is it safe to use the 7's charger with my smartphone? Will I break my devices if I do it?

Perfectly safe. The Nexus charger puts out slightly more current than most phones, worst case it will charge them slightly faster, just as a phone charger will be a little shower with the tablet.

You won't break your devices, but it would take an extraordinarily long time to charge your N7 with the phone's charger. Conversely, the phone is not going to charge exponentially faster using the tab's charger. So, all in all, wile it's not ideal, you won't be hurting anything.

So I can just keep my Nexus 7 charger and use it for every other gadget, and put the other chargers into a drawer? That's nice to know, thanks guys.

The phone won't charge any faster using the N7 charger, but the tablet on the phone charger would be significantly slower- to the point that even moderate use while plugged in would result in still draining the battery. Assuming no use while charging, the tablet would require several hours more than normal for a full charge.

I disagree, my galaxy prevail charges twice as fast on my n7 charger than with a standard phone/car charger. However my n7 does take forever on the phone/car charger. Literally like 8hrs+ to reach 100%.

Check the 'mA' or 'A' rating on the charger.. The higher it is, the faster it will charge.
the charger I got bundled with Nexus 7 is outputing 2A (2000mA to be exact), which is quite higher than most phone chargers
(I've got chargers with standard 500mA & with 800mA).
I've been using the Nexus 7 charger for charging my ZTE Blade and nothing seems wrong using it..
A phone's charging circuit will automatically restrict the current to the specs needed by the phone.
PS: 'A' stands for 'Amperes' & 'mA' stands for 'milli Amperes ', both are units of measuring current.
I really need the stock charger I lost mine :'( ......any body know where to get one????
I got mine from buychina. Search for nexus 4 chargers and there will be 3 that look like the ones out of the box (2 prong if you're in the US). One of them is the 1.2mAh charger

You can also use a different charger.
I'm using an original Samsung charger.
Better for me cuz the stock charger makes a strange noise

You really don't need to buy an OEM charger. In fact, 1.2A is quite low for a good USB charger nowadays, you can use a 2A charger. It may not improve charging time though, only a little perhaps.

Is it ok to charge my Nexus 4 using the Nexus 7 charger given the extra current involved?
My understanding is the Nexus 4 will just ignore the extra output but i would feel much better if this could be verified and backed up.
Yes it's fine because it's the phone that decides how much current to draw from the charger.

Hi I recently bought a Nexus 4 16GB from Google Play in the UK. It's been working fine but in the last few days when I connect my phone with the official charger (the one that came in the box) the touchscreen begins to act weird and buggy. More specifically it becomes less sensitive and doesn't function properly. I can scroll down on the app drawer with no problem but scrolling up is extremely slow- its like its scrolling through syrup, same on homescreen. Thinking this was an app or kernel problem I removed an app I thought was causing the issue and reverted kernel back to normal but the problem persists. I now think it may have something to do with the charger being faulty as I am now charging my Nexus 4 with the charger that came with my Nexus 7 and no problems with touchscreen responsiveness or interaction.
Has anyone else had issues with this? as I've seen people have trouble with non standard chargers but I'm using the official one.
Would Google be able to exchange just the charger and not the whole phone package? And is it okay to use my Nexus 7 charger for my Nexus 4?

Yes you can use the Nexus 7 charger. In fact, you can use any Micro usb charger cable to charge your phone. The phone will take in the amount of power it needs. It shouldn't be an issue.
Anyone know what could be causing the touch screen issues when charging. That's what confuses me the most. Could it have something to do with the charger heating up or being faulty?

I know that with some of my older phones, when charging from an inverter that did not stabilize it's output voltage, my touchscreen would do the described. Maybe the charger fluctuates in voltage slightly... This was on my old iPhone 3GS, I can't remember if my Atrix did it... It might not do that on the Nexus

It would probably be something with the charger output then. Maybe it has to do with amperage output rather then voltage, I know that some people had issues with the stock charger outputing less amperage sometimes making the phone drop to USB mode. IMO the stock charger kinda sucks and its better to just buy another charger and keep the stock one for backup or something
