Interesting board name in-joke/reference - Droid Ultra General

So this just dawned on me while reading something totally unrelated to phones or geeky stuff in general:
The board/development name for the 2013 Moto X is "ghost". The board name for the 2013 DROID line is "obake". Obake is a Japanese word that is frequently directly translated to "ghost", but more accurately, it means "related to ghosts". Since the 2013 DROIDs are, for all intents and purposes, rebadged and repackaged Moto Xs, the name is sort of a funny easter egg. The 2K13 DROIDs literally are "related to (a) ghost".
I'll return to my basement now, I just thought it was a little interesting engineer humor.

Not sure how it is engineering related?
My wife who is Japanese says it means ghost or monster.

[Q] What do you guys think of the naming of the "One"

When i heard of the name of the HTC One, I was rather confused. I knew it was the new HTC Phone, that it was better than any other phone in the series of One devices and was their flagship phone for 2013 at least until the One+. But giving it the name "One" was weird to me. It makes it SOUND like it was before the other One devices. I'm sure you can argue that it is the "One" phone to have but if i was an average smartphone user and didn't know much about smartphones, I would pick something like the One X over something named to One if i had no idea what the specs were. It just seems odd to me.
I don't know if I'm the only one who found it weird but what do you guys think?
Definitely my thoughts. Stupid htc.
Sent from my HTC One X using Tapatalk 2
Stupid name, especially when trying to find accessories liek screen protectors etc, you type HTC one and one x, one s, one x+, one sv a range of one devices come up. the should have stuck to HTC M7 imo sounds much better and easier to distinguish.
The One name is great for puns though i.e it is the 'ONE' for me.
It is weird... but only because the naming conventions are unusual.
Personally, I would have liked it better if they called it the "2013" One X. Or the One Xi, One Xii, One Xii+. etc.
If you ask me I think the name HTC One is far superior than those of One X, One S, One V etc.
Why?
It sound like as if One X, S, V are prototypes Usually when you make prototypes on products you add some sort of unique sub name to distinguish version types and then trim it down when it's already for production.
Or it's as if it is the grandest of all One series.
I'd call it pure laziness
Slithered from my HTC One X+
Since HTC always came up with crazy nicknames they may have ran out of names. At least it isn't xperia (insert letter here)

HTC did it backwards I think. Last year should have been the HTC one, this year the HTC One X ( I think One x sounds bad ass, it would have been a great name as a successor)

Of course, I haven't slept once since they've announced it because the name of it causes just so much distress. xD No, just curious on how others think about HTC's wonky naming system.
speaking of wonky naming system reminds me of sony
Took a page from Apples book. They did the same with the iPad. Personally I actually like the name One.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
I think it is great. They wanted to keep with the one naming and they did. I also think they did it to hopefully keep people less confused with the different variations and will just stick with the "one" as their flagship phone across all carriers. The x, s, v just confused a bunch of people and totally went away from their marketing of the "one". Just as Samsung has their galaxy s, htc from here forward will have the one.
Sent from my HTC One XL using xda app-developers app
I like it too.
I really don't like really fragmented product naming systems that have no relevance to eachother.
Assuming that this is "a new start" in terms of naming, hopefully they stick with it and we can write off their frankly ridiculous naming of the past.
What I mean is that say from now on HTC makes 8 phones a year, they could be named One through to Eight with one being the flagship, and the name reused each year after that for the successor (much like how cars are named).
I know it won't happen that way, but that makes sense to me and when you tell people you have the HTC One, they would KNOW you have the best one.
Simply awesome
Evidence: everybody been asking about the HTC "One"
remember the name is actually an HTC trademark!
The first person I mentioned it to replied back telling me they already released the One...I had to spend some time convincing them otherwise. In that sense it's silly but 99% of the population barely know about HTC, I think they are going with a whole new strategy here despite recycling the name. It indicates a 'rebirth' to me.
I'd like to see them imitate Apple and Sammy's naming convention...HTC One 2...HTC One 3 :silly:
I am already tired of googling for htc one -x -"x+" -s -v -xl -sv
It sounds great, and htc have confirmed that will only be making this one single phone a year (no smaller or '+' the or click version) ; so the problem is what will they call next year's version.
I've just worked it out, it can only be called the Two.?
Actually that doesn't seem so bad then
I like the name.
Random person - "What phone have you got there?"
Me - "Oh, it's the ONE"
Random (now impressed person) - "OMG that sounds awesome! I think I'll go buy one"
After all the Hobbits were a lot more concerned about "The One ring" than "The 2013 One X ring".
i also think the name is kind of awkward...
by now it is already hard to find accessoires etc. online (amazon etc.) for my one x+ (the main problem is the + but also that there is the one S, V, X, ...)
then how will it be with the one? i think then the results of all one X/S/V/XL/X+ will be displayed and this is really a disadvantage.
in my opinion it's just confusing and the name m7 would've been better, both for recgnization and because of the name itself..

Lenovo buying Motorola Mobility

News reports today state that Lenovo is buying Motorola Mobility from Google for about $3B. Any thoughts on this?

Sad
Another great American firm gets broken apart and sold to a foreign company.
Very concerned about what the future holds for the firm, and all the recently-hired guys in the US...
My initial reaction is not positive. I've been a fan of moto for a long time, and have owned many moto devices.
They're selling it at a huge loss, but they are retaining the patents, and licensing them to Lenovo, so its WORTH a whole lot less too.
I have been admiring the Moto X, but my HD Maxx is good enough that I can't justify replacing it. So I've been somewhat planning on picking up whatever its successor would be. We'll see now.
Lenovo to Acquire Motorola Mobility from Google
I think, as a Motorola phone owner, that our upgrade propspects not being a part of Google anymore have been vastly reduced, sadly. :crying: Here´s the pertinent part of the announcement press release:
Lenovo to Acquire Motorola Mobility from Google
Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, and Mountain View, California – January 29, 2014: Lenovo (HKSE: 992) (ADR: LNVGY) and Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) today have entered into a definitive agreement under which Lenovo plans to acquire the Motorola Mobility smartphone business. With a strong PC business and a fast-growing smartphone business, this agreement will significantly strengthen Lenovo’s position in the smartphone market. In addition, Lenovo will gain a strong market presence in North America and Latin America, as well as a foothold in Western Europe, to complement its strong, fast-growing smartphone business in emerging markets around the world.
The purchase price is approximately US$2.91 billion (subject to certain adjustments), including US$1.41 billion paid at close, comprised of US$660 million in cash and US$750 million in Lenovo ordinary shares (subject to a share cap/floor). The remaining US$1.5 billion will be paid in the form of a three-year promissory note.
Lenovo, which in 2005 acquired IBM’s PC business and its legendary PC brand, will now acquire world-renowned Motorola Mobility, including the MOTOROLA brand and Motorola Mobility's portfolio of innovative smartphones like the Moto X and Moto G and the DROID™ Ultra series. In addition to current products, Lenovo will take ownership of the future Motorola Mobility product roadmap.
Google will maintain ownership of the vast majority of the Motorola Mobility patent portfolio, including current patent applications and invention disclosures. As part of its ongoing relationship with Google, Lenovo will receive a license to this rich portfolio of patents and other intellectual property. Additionally Lenovo will receive over 2,000 patent assets, as well as the Motorola Mobility brand and trademark portfolio.
Motorola Mobility enjoys outstanding brand awareness around the world, and is currently the #3 Android smartphone manufacturer in the U.S. and #3 manufacturer overall in Latin America.
“The acquisition of such an iconic brand, innovative product portfolio and incredibly talented global team will immediately make Lenovo a strong global competitor in smartphones. We will immediately have the opportunity to become a strong global player in the fast-growing mobile space,” said Yang Yuanqing, chairman and CEO of Lenovo. “We are confident that we can bring together the best of both companies to deliver products customers will love and a strong, growing business. Lenovo has a proven track record of successfully embracing and strengthening great brands – as we did with IBM’s Think brand – and smoothly and efficiently integrating companies around-the-world. I am confident we will be successful with this process, and that our companies will not only maintain our current momentum in the market, but also build a strong foundation for the future.”
“Lenovo has the expertise and track record to scale Motorola Mobility into a major player within the Android ecosystem. This move will enable Google to devote our energy to driving innovation across the Android ecosystem, for the benefit of smartphone users everywhere,” said Larry Page, CEO, Google.
“As part of Lenovo, Motorola Mobility will have a rapid path to achieving our goal of reaching the next 100 million people with the mobile Internet. With the recent launches of Moto X and Moto G, we have tremendous momentum right now and Lenovo’s hardware expertise and global reach will only help to accelerate this,” said Dennis Woodside, CEO, Motorola Mobility.
The transaction is subject to the satisfaction of regulatory requirements, customary closing conditions and any other needed approvals.

It was Google's excuse for not being able to release many devices. Samsung releases tons of devices for every segment and they keep them updated, maybe not lightning fast updates but fast enough for everyone. I personally waited for a quadcore FHD screen beast from motorola, all they could offer was Moto X. Funny part was that they tried to sell it within the same price range with quads, full hd phones.
My greatest concern about this sale is that with the Moto X and Moto G coming out and source being released for it, we'd (RAZR HD) eventually see a 3.4 kernel and native 4.4 support based on this source and maybe I'm being naive but that seems further and further away now with this news.
Motorola Canada page says my phone is getting KK officially but I haven't seen anything so far nor found any source.

You clearly have never used a Moto X. Its smoother than some quad core phones out there. In fact, I'm going to go as far as saying that Motorola proved specs aren't everything in an Android phone, as long as you can optimize the software right. I'm not going to argue about screen size because for me I don't notice a difference in resolution unless its a tablet or something, but the screen on the X (and my Maxx HD, for that matter) is better quality than my girl's S4. So while you let hype build up inside you and let you down hard when they released the X, people who knew to take leaks with a grain of salt were ecstatic the phone performed the way it did and had the ability to customize colors and software options as well.

Don't need an argument over this. Just chill down, it's just a phone. You don't need to defend just because you got one. Everybody have their own opinion. So, you can be happy with your Moto X. I never thought of buying one because it was overpriced compared to other brand flagships being a dualcore/hd device. Moto X is a great phone it does what it does but it's just not in the same league with other Quad / FHD solutions with its mediocre dual/hd setup. No matter how good it was optimised by google, it never has to carry the weight of Full HD pixels with its weaker dualcore cpu. I got my first dualcore from motorola back in 2011 Atrix 4G(a true milestone device), then XT910 which was also dualcore. So i just kept waiting for a quadcore from new motorola-google. And yet they didn't release a phone which is better or faster than competing companies. It's 2014 and i hope Lenovo will bring motorola to a new competing athmosphere to catch up with the tech race.
and if we are to consume as consumers,i want to consume the best and Moto X wasn't the best :good:
i hope some we see Motorola same before
i ♥ motorola forever

No sd card is really debatable with the advent of usb-otg.
Lenovo bought Motorola is a good sign for great marketing than the tricky Google. We should see sdcard, quadcore (no more dualcore krait),FullHD screen, great camera software in a Motorola phone soon. My friend has just bought a Lenovo P780. It's a great device with great build quality, vivid screen and a monster battery (4000 mah).

as long as they dump a kernel for 4.4.2 on the xt926 dev, well see better custom ROMs.
we just need to wait for qualcomm to update the drivers/binaries/blobs of the MSM8960; its not just the RAZR's but the SGS3, Xperia T/V too that use this chipset, and qualcomm is slow to update, competition is good!

Mr Woodside is a very nice and ambitious guy. try watching his presentations in youtube. he is the brains behind our great moto G. If he is leaving the company means there must be some thing between lenovo management and him. its mostly likely to be incompatibility of ideologies of lenovo and woodside. I think this is doom for motorola. :crying:
Yes he was a awesome ceo.....but I think its becoming a trend for Big Ceo's to leave companies for smaller ones
Maybe Next think we hear Tim Cook (apple guy) leaving it to become CEO of flappy Birds
ok, lets be objective about this. In two years the 'apparent' profitability of Motorola has fallen through the floor. Google has gouged the relevant patents and then sold on the bones to Lenovo at a massive cut price.
Either the CEO's job was the present the façade of a successful company ready for resale while it was looted, or he kinda failed if he was 'really' trying to bring moto mobile back to its former glory. It doesn't surprise me he is leaving.
The MOTO G and the MOTO X, imo are great phones, however they do not mean Motorola is a success. If it really was, google would have kept it, or sold as a profit, not a massssssive loss.
Lenovo were buying the brand, nothing more. It is totally expected that half the leadership team would leave...
I'm sure someone will come forward stating that Google actually made a profit, or mitigated their losses through acquiring patents etc. This is my point exactly. Either the CEO was just giving the appearance of success while asset stripping, OR there was still more value in Motorola and google should have kept it. Google made a loss in the hundreds of millions, if not billions even taking into account the patents etc with motorola. These may net out in the future because of additional asset streams from the patents, but this is speculation. In addition, Google press release on the sale is of course extremely well loaded with positive spin. This is no different from any other companies actions. They will always promote the upside to ensure share price growth/stability. What company in their right mind would make noise about increased liabilities from an acquisition, or suggest a business arm was failing just before it is sold!
Imagine I was about to sell a car, you think I would tell everyone I was stripping out all the best bits and selling on the crap BEFORE the sale.
Imagine I was buying a factory, you think I would tell my investors it was a big risk and might be overpriced, or you think I would tell them it's a great deal.... think about it...

And Dennis ofcourse did not slingshot the company back in profit....you can't do that in such a short time but he made the brand value 'sellable' again
Moto x can be called the best phone of 2013 for some!
and some of Moto X's r & d made its way to Moto G which is Definately the best middle range/budget phone of 2013
I would call that a success!!

And what of Google’s supposed $10bn loss? It’s a misreported myth calculated by subtracting Motorola’s $2.91bn sale price from its $12.5bn purchase. What it misses are the $3.2bn Motorola had in cash, $2.4bn saved in deferred tax assets and two separate Motorola unit sales totalling $2.5bn in 2013. Factor in Lenovo’s purchase against roughly $2bn of Motorola losses during Google’s ownership and Google has still only paid $3bn for what it retained: $5.5bn worth of Motorola patents and the company’s cutting edge research lab.
Google aren't fools you know.

Moto X - General Chit-Chat

Yeah, its general chit-chat thread for the Moto X. there are some talks, question which don't' deserve dedicated threads so decided to put a common thread for such talks.
Here is fist query from my side:
Here is promotional video of the MotoX. I want to know which audio track is this? Maybe this is Motorola's own track which may not be available as commercial but I am in love with the track, especially the track gets interesting at the ending. Want to know what genre is this or any other closest audio track which resembles with this. Here is the video, please listen:
thank you

Great great review!
10/10 will buy just need release already
Seems like the 17th is the rumor
Can we expect this kind of durability form the new Moto X ?? I don't think so. Bigger the phone grows, more fragile it. And the new model seems like has turned into more delicate device after adding that bigger display and thing metallic bezel.
I also seen similar tests for Samsung Galazy (S5 or similar) and LG G3 and all of them failed the tests.

No doubt he have had important role during Motorola's recovery days so this is definitely a loss. But here is another important thing that Motorola could fight back because of one magic combination : Google+Motorola.
Now Google doesn't seem to be interested in manufacturing thus they sold Motorola to Lenovo after doing bit of successful experiments and keeping few Motorola patents with them. We have seen how good the three models launched by Motorola under Google's ownership have turned out.
Future success and reputation of Motorola will depend on how Lenovo operates the company. They bought ThinkPad unit from IBM and carried the character of those laptops. But they didn't buy the whole brand so obviously they didn't use the IBM brand name with those laptops. Here they have bought the whole company along with brand name so I just hope that they let the Motorola keep going in it's own way, they don't mix Moto phones with their own phones and sell the mobile phones with Motorola brand name. Motorola has got it's own fan following which has just increased in the past one year because of distinct image their phones .have built up in recent time. Lenovo should respect expectations of those fans.
I am hoping for good but smelling mixed kind of probabilities.

Based on the way they treated the thinkpad branding, I think there is a good chance they will make Motorola/Moto a line of the Lenovo brand. Lenovo are very good at driving down supply-chain cost. I think Motorola actually has a chance to increase global market share with them as a lower-price alternative to Samsung built with decent product design and quality. I'm not sure that is what I would want, but it would keep Motorola relevant.

Based on the way they treated the thinkpad branding, I think there is a good chance they will make Motorola/Moto a line of the Lenovo brand. Lenovo are very good at driving down supply-chain cost. Lenovo shouldn't touch Motorola's product design and stuff. The only thing they should touch is the marketing side of it all. Maybe some of the camera stuff and battery also, but Moto is onto something with their Moto X lineup, and it'll only get better

i have the phone in my hands. so far, MUCH better than my Nexus 4. the speed is there. the audio for the music is a tad bit better. the back of the phone is nice, it feels smooth but not slippery. i need to test battery now, so i will post that in the other thread

Cool. I'm upgrading from nexus 4 as well. Mines coming in tomorrow! My nexus 4 was still perfectly smooth though.

My Nexus 4 was dying in the battery department and it would always heat up. Moto X seems like the best mix of a Nexus and a consumer focused phone. I say consumer focused because Nexus phones have been targeted toward devs

I did say what the back of the phone is like earlier. What else do you want to know about the plastic? It's smooth but not too slippery. I don't think it's soft touch

On the fence..
I cant decide if I want to get this. I loved the original Moto X but now I have the M8, which is great - no complaints, but I must confess I'm a phone junky (aren't we all?). I've looked at so many reviews and the only thing that still bothers me is the camera, and battery life compared to the M8. But then there's the next to pure android experience and motomaker....so tough.

Motorola personnel, honesty and promptness..

Since 1989, some 26 years, purchasing at least two devices per year, sometimes, up to five devices per year, that's at least 52 devices, exclusively, Motorola's devices, as far back as devices like the "bag phone" and something called the "mobile phone" magnetically hung on a post, in the center, tunnel, floorboard of my 1989 FORD Ranger..soon, will be holding, using as my daily driver "cell phone"..something other than a Motorola device..I have MANY personal reasons for this change, hint, hint, its not the device quality and design, but its company personnel, company procedures, not backing the product with honesty and promptness..and the list is longer, but will stop there..
This change will happen, VERY SOON..lol

Cool story.
And they lose another motorolan, poor motorola never knew how to keep their loyal customers. Get the hint from my signature after another 50 motorola devices.

That was.... incoherent.
Clif notes:
OP is not happy with current perceived quality of moto and despite being a long time loyal customer, he is thinking of moving on due to aforementioned perceived quality issues.

Thank you, cause i honestly couldn't understand what he was saying. Is he speaking english?
Although OP apparently just bought another Moto X.
I reordered the Moto X 2014 again because I was fed up with the OPO crap signal, this time I was a bit sad that it's no longer assembled in US.
