[Q] KNOX 0x1 worth? - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi Guys,
I am currently on NeatRom 2.5.3 with KNOX 0x0 and i am considering to trigger my KNOX to flash a custom recovery, kernel, Rom (especially the Android Lollipop build)
But is it all worth?
- Are there some really nice roms which provide nice battery life (i am currently getting 4h 30min onscreen time and wanna get more actually)
- Worth losing your warranty forever?

I think it is, because you can't use your full smartphone without. It's like buying a supercar and not using it because it might be more valuable in future if it's new.

I think it's worth it, then you flash what you want, how you want, that for me is worth it.
As for screen time, there are no guarantees of it being a whole lot better but the fun is in the trying.
And for Warranty I have insurance so it is 200.00 to replace and no question asked
.
SM-G900W8, 0x1

Of course its worth it done it from day one and have never regretted it

Tripped mine to fix an issue where I needed custom recovery. I was holding off as it's a new phone but was considering it anyhoo.
Happy now as I can now back up roms etc. Feel like I'm in control and warranty isn't an issue unless the software is the cause of a fault.

I say wait for your warranty to finish and then install custom recovery.. you never know what can happen.. this is what I am doing... 1 year warranty.. going to flash custom recovery after the 1 year.

[Q] What am I missing out by not flashing custom recovery / kernel (keepin knox 0x0)?

Please list what I am missing out on so hopefully that will tip me over so I finally flash a proper kernel .. =)
What cool new features do the custom kernels currently available offer? (apart from selinux permissive and getting rid of all the knox and selinux bull****)
No (easy) nandroid backup/restore and no zip flashing through a custom recovery also sucks =/...
Man Samsung why did you have to put us through this decision? One lil word that knox (warranty) can be restored / is still honored with knox 0x1 and this thing is flashed in 10 seconds....

Keeping KNOX 0x0 prevents you from flashing other ROMs, and some of the ones here on XDA beat the crap out of OEM stock ROMs. A custom recovery makes it easy to backup, change the ROM, flash ZIPs, etc. I had TWRP with Multiboot, on my Nexus 7, so I could test and play with other stuff like Ubuntu without messing with my main CM system. As for kernels, I didn't see any available last time I checked, not for this device at least, but I'm sure we'll see them soon enough.
This may not apply to you, but I asked my Sprint Store directly, will rooting affect my Total Equipment Protectjon, and not only did they say it is OK, the guy actively encouraged me to root (though that part was probably the guys personal opinion). As for Samsung, i don't know, but I'm keeping it as long as i can tolerate (end or December I'll probably crack). Hope this helps.
Why I choose custom ROMS and ROOT is because I get free hands on changing the appearance! I really hate the stock appearance of every phone (I think it's because it feels like I'm forced to use it) and I love to change every single thing of it. Of course there are a lot of different things you can do as well, I have for example installed AdAway (no more crappy advertisement all over your phone) and ES File Explorer with ROOT so I can change every file I want wherever I want.
Sorry for the cheeky reply but one would google "advantages of root" or something like it to get some answers.
Without root you are going to miss out on a huge variety of things, but if you don't use those features, will you miss them?
Food for thought.

Yeah... think knox make me think of this is my last Samsung phone... haha... happy with root device but I don't want to lose warranty too.

Hmm either I didnt explain myself correctly, or you guys didnt understand me fully:
I got my phone rooted with root de la vega (obviously - if there was no way around it I would just trip the knox flag - but with RDLV I can do most of the root things..)
I know what a custom recovery can do and this one is pretty big for me already since I like to mess around with system alot and would love to have easy nandroid backup.. but so far that was not enough for me to actually trip knox for having that.
So I was asking what other things some of the custom kernels and/or recoveries do offer at this point? I see there is OC/UV already with Faux kernel? And sound improvement? Guess it's time to trip that knox.. but man if tomorrow or next week someone finds a way to circumvent the knox tripping somehow, I would bite myself in the ass lol..
Just a big FU at samsung for forcing this crap on people...

Should I update or not

I am worried that the samsung knox will ruin my device. So should I update or not. What if I got bored of touchwiz and wanted to flash a new rom
Does updating mean I will lose the ability to root and flash forever?
If you search the forum you will see someone already posted a rom with the knox striped. Wait a bit longer and I am sure more versions will be coming.

also it seems across a lot of Samsung devices 4.3 drains the battery faster, correct me if this is crap

as far as i did understand that, it is a question of the new bootloader, where a knox flag shows your flashing orgies, which cannot be resetted at the time (no triangle away can help us so far)...so if you try to get away from the original firmware, you raise the counter and void your warranty...well, if you had one
anyway, if you have no warranty, you can show your backside to knox. nothing will happen, but a flash counter shows what you were doing...
please be careful, of course you can brick your phone with flashing, as always, but this will not have anything to do with knox!
EDIT: the only thing is, there is no possibility to downgrade the bootloader by now! so, you cannot simply go back to 4.1! but you can of course flash 4.3 custom roms...
I still don't get why Samsung has this Knox thing. As far as I know, here in the EU, rooting and flashing ROMs does not void the warranty unless it is proven that the malfunction came from the owner messing with the software. So, having Knox raising a counter or flag the device or whatever, is pretty useless, at least here in the EU. We already have the flash counter. The only advantage may be that with Knox, there is no way to conceal the precious flashes and that we can claim the warranty when we DID messed up the phone somehow, because if we didn't, the warranty is still active.

Not sure about n2 but with n3 physical damage, in the form of a broken efuse, is actually the result of tripping knox. So even under eu regulations, the warranty is void once knox is tripped.

What a cheap trick they made. Since modifying software does not void warranty, they make a little piece of hardware get damaged so the warranty gets void even though that the so called e-fuse is non-essential (I think) for the smartphone correct functioning . Wow, that is even worst that what I was thinking. Samsung really messed up this time, what's the point of having an Android then? So, after all, we people from the EU, can't get away with our flashes and customizations...
Thanks for the info, btw.
Stick to 4.1.2 and enjoy mindless flashing of custom roms.
Let't go!!!

Knox has been deleted at the DN3 Rom.
Anyways AFAIK you flash DN3 Rom from Stock 4.1.2 the Bootloader will be still the old one and you have to use the wifi fix.

yeah agree totally on this,. they make sure you only have 1 way go to up in version of rom without able to go back down to older rom by locking it with knox,. it is very cheap method samsung is using this time, kind of what's else is the point of not able to flashing all fancy custom rom ?
Ditto Note 3 is awesome. They just released v3 and works great. I was on 4.1.2 for the longest time then updated to 4.3 official release but Knox was so annoying I have decided to go for custom rom and I am very happy so far.

1. Yes Flashback should be possible.
2+3. In any case do a backup of your imei, there are various possibilties but you need root.
After several days of sheer frustration with 4.3 constantly rebooting, freezing my phone, causing the "black screen of death", numerous force closes, broken apps and producing many permission related errors which can be seen in logcat, I downgraded to 4.1.2 this morning and haven't had a single issue in 12 hours. I have no good reason to ever change my firmware from 4.1.2. It's solid as a rock and trouble-free. Maybe if stability improves on 4.3, I may try it out again in six months.

I am not eager to flash, but because I have a gear now, I updated to open Asia mj5 4.3.
Rock solid until now, gear works 100%.
The only worry I have is future updates, because mj5 is a "leak".
But, mj5 is stable for me, although it seems a bit slower at times as the 4.1.2
Never rooted, standard all the way.

Guys, I don't think KNOX e-fuse is there to void the warranty or for Samsung to know if you flashed your device or not. KNOX e-fuse is there so that you know if the phone has been messed up with if you actualy use KNOX. This is for the COMPANIES that need enhanced security etc. And for this security there must be a way to tell if the device has been messed with. For most people that don't use company phone (and for majority of those who do) KNOX is not interesting because they don't need it. But I understand why banks and other institutions that demand security would need it.
So it is no cheap trick by Samsung to get to void ordinary user's warranty, it is a security measure which only some companies will use.

[Q] New S5 owner, suggested modifications?

I just got an S5, because screw not being able to get at the battery in the S6, and I'm looking at getting custom roms and such. Any recommendations from the community? I'm on a Canadian device, so the model is G900W8. Also, anything you would recommend I don't do?
Thanks!

Welcome to the club ! I'm also a new S5 owner for 2 weeks and the first thing I would mention is that you should read around about KNOX and decide if you can have it tripped or not. If you are alright with KNOX tripped to 0x1 (like me) then your possibilities are endless! You can start with updating to stock lollipop (if not already) and flash a custom kernel like ktoonsez and enjoy better battery life, d2w and a bunch of other features. After that you're free to do pretty much anything you like, if something screws up you can just Odin back to stock 4.4 or 5.0.
If you cannot have KNOX tripped then your customizations are very limited, I think rooting is fine, but other than that not sure....

Yep, I have no problem with KNOX being tripped. The way I see it, the phone's waterproof, dust proof, and I have it in an Otterbox case. If I manage to break it somehow, that's all on me lol. I rooted already, and I'm looking at some custom roms right now like Omega. I'll check out that kernel you mentioned as well. Thanks.
The most important thing is to install Greenify in order to improve your battery life. I personally prefer AOSP ROMs like CM12, because Vanilla Android rocks

Should I install a custom recovery?

I have done this on other phones before and I know the advantages like custom kernel, recovery and backups. But I haven't had a samsung before and I heard that this can trip knox. if I trip knox, what will happen?
Also does anyone know if rooting/custom recovery/custom kernel/ custom rom stops the finger print sensor or other features?
Thanks
Hey man,
on my g928f (MM) is the custom recovery, audax rom and the SkyHigh kernel installed. It will trip knox.
My fingerprint works fine.
Most of the Advantages you can read at the thread made from the Dev's.
Maybe the SamsungPay app won't work with tripped knox, but i m not sure 'cause it's not released in Europe. :/
Hope i was able to help you a little bit!

What's the battery life like with the recovery & kernel?
Stock MM sucks the life out of my device like Drakula.
So the deepsleep bug is fixed with the kernel. Today I've used my phone a lot (apps like Whatapp, Facebook, Snapchat, Music) and it's still on 29%.
It mostly depends on the brightness of the display and how you use it.
For me it's nearly the same as with lollipop.
But if you won't trip knox.. i think the best thing you can do is to wait till Samsung fixes the bug if they haven't done it already.

What to do tomorrow when I get my S7E?

Hi guys, after overthinking it *way* too much I decided to order a new S7E through my provider (T-mobile) in Holland.
I was afraid to get one because i'm clumsy as hell and drop my phones hundreds of time. Till now i've always been extremely lucky (S1, S3, G3) but the S7 is very shatter prone to say the least...
After reading countless threads and videos about screenprotectors (liquid, TG, plastic, cases) I still don't know what to choose
Anyway, I'm getting it tomorrow and I read that knox get tripped as soon as you root.
Does anyone in Holland have experience with warranty being rejected because knox was tripped?
I think I really want to root (Titanium backup, xposed mods, several apps that work better with root) but maybe I'll have to hold off until I know for sure that the hardware is working fine?
So IF I decide to go for it and root with CF-Root, is it true that when using Flashfire you basically don't need TWRP anymore as you can flash zipfiles and create/restore backups with it?
And when you root, do you immediately lose automatic OTA? Or do you lose that when flashing a customized rom?
Thanks for any tips
if you install customized rom so need TRWP !
get new s7 phone
- no install new system update
- odin flash CF auto root - http://forum.xda-developers.com/s7-edge/development/sm-g935-exynos-cf-auto-root-t3337354
- odin flash TRWP
after
- TRWP install Phoenix ROM
- TRWP install Protheus Kernel
- enjoy your Life and great phone
Dont go for the glass protector try to get a solution based screen protector And if you care for warranty dont root, until rooting without tripping knox possible .
Flashing custom rom will loose the ability to OTA. But, most custom roms support their own OTA
I am not on the only root thing, it is always better to have a custom recovery when you are in to modding.

I will certainly look into optimized stock roms as soon as I have rooted, the question still is, to root or not to root
I'm curious to know how warranty reparations in Holland end up when you've rooted your device.

I've normally not been really worried about warranty, but i've read many warnings from people here that your screen might go bad after a month or two, so I guess I want knox to be untripped :|
And you're right, when using custom roms it might be safer to have TWRP to come to the rescue when needed.

Actually for Samsung it doesn't matter , get Smart Switch> Download mode > brand new OS > (Except) Knox tripped . But, Smart Switch take ages to download .. to me no matter how fast my connection is. you know OEM server's are always slow
