[Q] SMS Messaging? - Galaxy Tab 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, Group:
This is a question for the Devs out there...
My wife has an ORIGINAL 3G Tab 7.0....it came with SMS messaging as Samsung/Sprint Stock. (No, *REALLY*)
We just purchased a SM-T237 (4G LTE) to replace it...only to find out that apparently, her Original device was the *only* Tablet model in the world that natively included Messaging (I've gotten several "what an Idiot you are" type-replies when I asked about this elsewhere.)
NOTE: This device was assigned a unique Phone number by Sprint when it was purchased (just like her Original Tab.)
(Now, before y'all start...she does *NOT* have an Android Phone...she's a bit of a Luddite, and has a Palm 755 that she *adores*...so that whole "Send SMS Messages through your Android Phone" app thing won't work. I have also tried installing a couple of those Apps on the new Tab, and manually inputting the Tab's phone #...that doesn't work either.)
So, here is my question: Is there *ANY* (I assume hardware-related) reason why (with the right .apks installed) SMS messaging would not work directly from the Tab?
Ass-u-me-ing the answer to the above is "sure, it should work", this is my Second Question: If I Rooted this device, could I import the SMS .apks from another (phone) device and have them work?
And does anyone have a suggestion as to which Device to import them from (and which .apks i'd need)?
Thanks in advance!
(A suggestion to the Devs....if it works, it could be included in a Custom ROM for this device (or, for that matter...an OEM ROM...although I know *that* isn't likely )

i dont know what it is, but she must be a bit of Luddite. maybe its linked with the imei.

There's an app in the play store called "mighty text" you can use on any tablet or your computer if you use Chrome browser. But you have to install it on your smartphone for it to work.

Send SMS From Contact List

Is there a hack or application that anyone knows that will allow me the option of sending a text to a contact from the Contacts list (instead of having to open the contact, scroll down the numbers etc etc)
So I would be able to press the Menu key and it appear in this list as Send SMS...
Many thanks
It is already there...
I'm using the AKU 2.3 Rom but I can't remember it not being there even in the 1.8 Rom that mine shipped with.
Vijay has a nice tool to do this here:
http://www.vijay555.com/?Releases:VJPhoneTools
If that's not what you're after you can always add a line in the Notes section of a contact like this
smsnnn)[email protected]<recipient'sCarrierDoman>
(Carrier Domain example: @mymobile.cingular.com)
with a space and/or line return after it (but no spaces within), and it will show up as a selectable link. When you tap it the SMS app will open with the number you're wanting to text to in the appropriate place.

Thanks for that but neither of those is really what I was hoping for.
I use sms more than phone calls and find it kind of couter intuitive that I can see the contact and dial it from the contacts list, but in order to send a text I have to find the contact open it, scroll down to the SMS number then send the text. What I was really looking for was a way to put an extra entry in the menu list allowing me to "Send SMS to contact" seems a bit silly that I have the option to send a media message but not an sms (given the relative ratios of SMS to MMS that the mobile operators handle) unless it is an attempt by Vodafone to get me to send more non bundled MMS instead of the huge number of bundled SMS that I have.
Whilst I love the functionality of my new handset I really do miss the more object orientated funtionality of my old Sony Ericsson

Missed this post, sorry.
That would be really useful, but I am a bit of a woose and don't want to wreck my phone and Vodafone haven't released the 2.3 ROM (from what I can tell).
I will do a search through the forums and figure out what I have to do to upgrade the ROM and then I'll have to take a gamble on whether I am brave enough to proceed.
Thanks
I s'pose I'm more of the old school, as I use my phone more for calls than text messaging. And in that regard I've been pleasantly surprised to learn how easy it is to do so.
I hope you find a solution, especially given the cost of the device!
I mainly go to inbox, Text Messages, type a few letters of the persons name, and their number pops right in. Am I missing something?

I'm thinking that this option was always there for me. Maybe Vodafone removes it from the list intentionally?
You can always try doing a hard reset (or clear storage) and then stop the vodafone customizations from installing by soft reseting when it says "installing customizations in 3 seconds".

Will give this a try when I have a quiet moment (and have made an inventory of everything that I will need to reload).

Hide / Archive Old Texts to save memory

I'm going crazy, after i get a texts it takes up to a minute to load the new message to my conversation. I know this is because i have over 300 texts with this person, but i don't see why i should be required to delete the texts. Iphone had the simple solution of only showing recent texts, and you have to press 'show older messages' to load them.
Anyone aware of a way to do that?
And im just gonna assume the lag while doing anything else on the phone, when you're about to receive a text is just normal. =/
please search some more as your problem has been discussed many many times.
i will help you now but you are expected (under the rules of this site) to search and let us know what/how much you searched before starting a new thread...capish?
first, lets restate the question:
1. your messaging application becomes slow, and you are correct to conclude that it is because of the number of messages in a given thread. any way to speed this up?
2. is there an alternative messaging application that is leaps and bounds better in terms of performance and functionality?
right off the bat, let me just clarify that the bad ass lag you experience when the device is about to receive a message is "normal", in the sense that all people using HTC messaging experience it and have gotten used to it. but that lag certainly doesn't occur on a whole bunch of other windows mobile devices/products.
so...you've asked question 1, and your assumption to archive old messages is a meaningful way out. so to answer question 1, you can use applications like "pimbackup" to periodically archive your old messages.
but the more powerful question is question 2. and the answer is...stop using HTC's ****ty messaging client, and disable that *****! the stock windows mobile messaging client is functionally equivalent and doesn't suffer from the lag issues. this means you won't have to even think about archiving your messages to gain performance.
so, to answer question 2, find a ROM that neatly keeps the HTC messaging disabled (NRGZ's "Energy" ROM series does this). or search for a thread started by me ("ASCIIker") in the HD2 general section for a guide on how to disable the HTC messaging client on stock ROM.
finally, some new versions of the HTC messaging client have appeared that significantly reduces the lag issues. if you read my guide, you might be able to choose better whether you want to stick to HTC messaging (or some newer version of it) or if you would rather be better off with the stock windows mobile messaging client.
good luck! and remember to search search search!

Check with another phone carier, I have same problem on one carrier it works, on another not. For tests use another phone number, it is not required that SIM card be in WP7 phone. If carier "support" this feature you will get SMS from microsoft, if not you are unlucky.
I guess microsoft (from live.com) use some global SMS carier and some carriers in different countries have not configured their gateways to accept this messages.
Well, one thing I noticed is if I am on WiFi or with data on, I tend to find my phone. Microsoft uses three different methods, I believe, to find your phone. One is using the location caching sent from your phone regularly if you have that on in the setting. The other is sending an SMS to force your phone to send a location, in which case your carrier needs to support global SMS I believe, and lastly, they send an email to do the same thing the SMS intended to do.
So first thing you should do is to check whether both boxes are checked in find my phone in settings. Secondly, be patient, if Microsoft can't locate it right away, they will send you an email when they do find it.

I don't think Whatsapp has been designed with Tablets in mind though I was hoping to use it when I get mine. Firstly are you sure you have got it set up correctly, I can't remember when I first set mine up on my phone but I think once I installed I had to put in the phone number I was using and then got a text message from Whatsapp on that number.
Again not sure on this next part but the Tab 10.1V doesn't have text message functionality does it? If not then I don't think it is set up correctly.
Anyway, lets assume that it is. The second issue is that Whatsapp syncs with your contacts from the phone book and the tablet doesn't have phone functionalities so won't have a phonebook.
I have a feeling that the phone version of Android 2.3 and below may store contact information in a different location to where Android 3.0 and above stores it so the app won't be able to find any of your contacts.
This is purely just guessing, you might want to shoot Whatsapp a quick message and see if that is the case or maybe do a Google search. They've had between 5-10million installs already so I'm sure there must be someone that has tried it on a Honeycomb Tab already
Thanks for your Help
I will look in to it and let you know something
Best regards

Look over at the whatsapp thread under the Xoom forum. I managed to get it working, but it won't run on the same account for 2 different devices at the same time (as Skype does), so I'm not using it.
How did you managed to do it?
I had no problems installing Whatsapp from official site, not the market, on my 10.1v after installing TB Galaxy 1.0.3 rom. I received sms validation, but never managed to add any contacts. Any hints?
Easy as a piece of cake!
Guys, actually it's very simple. I tried it myself and works.
Here's how:
Use the SIM card (mobile number) and insert into Tab 10.1 that you want your contact to see if you are online. This is also the number that you will be using to send/receive Whatsapp.
Download the latest Whatsapp here and install it on your Tab
Run Whatsapp and key in the SIM card mobile number and wait for it to verify
Wala... now you have a running Whatsapp!
Every mobile broadband card there is a number associated. If you do not know what is the number of the sim card, then take out the SIM card and plug it into a working phone, create a sms and send it to yourself and you will see a number popping up. That is the number you should key in Whatsapp.
NOTE: Because the number you are using in Whatsapp will determine who will see or will not see you online, therefore, I recommend either you inform your contacts that you have two Whatsapp running. One is on Tab while the other is on your phone. You cannot run both together using one number, but you can also circumvent if you intend to use it on your Tab rather than your phone, just use the SIM number that you are using for calls and insert into Tab to verify then take out the SIM and put back to your phone. It will still work.
It's easy and someone made it complicated. I thought so too initially!
PS: you won't be able to see your contact list as usual.
whatsapp is working correctly, BUT the contacts will only show up as numbers. and yes, im only running one instance of whatsapp.
as im reading this, do you mean that all your contacts needs to be on the SIM card and not using google contacts?
Whatsapp support mail
This is what official support answered me: "Sorry, tablets are not supported at this time and we have no plans to support them."
May be you will find something usefull here:

not working for me.
Try Viber, similar to whatsapp but can see all contacts. However, Viber can't seems to allow attachment of pic and clips. Anyone has ideas?
i found a way to use whatsapp with contacts, in a way.
Note my screen shot on the top half with names listed icons. (1st screenshot)
You can set whatsapp as default messaging and by pressing the friend icon, goes straight to a whatsapp conversation.
(2nd screenshot)
Note this.
You will need to keep all conversations and never delete them, otherwise you will need to get your friend to initiate a new conversation. But no big deal.
I tried everything else and this is the only way.
Hope that helped someone.
now the contacts accept whatsapp.
just set the default messaging service to what'sapp on the friend icon.
once your in contacts and press the contacts name, it shows the what's app icon as seen in the screenshot.
Works perfectly.
Update.
saving the contacts under device only makes what's app possible and only then will the icon appear under the contact.
Also. Now the contacts list can access whatsapp like it should.
Always get your friend to initiate the conversation and save it from there.
Transferring old account from the adroid phone trick does not work so this is the best way.
to bad this isent with wifi only ,
is there a way like imessage, or ping to use on tablets?

[Q] No Text Compose In Google Voice App

I have installed the APK for GV on my mom's Fire.
Although it connects to her Google account and displays received text messages, there is no way to compose and send or even reply to text messages.
I Do not want to install a secondary text messaging app because those give you a new phone number, and her contacts would not know who was texting them. (I have however, installed and removed one of these apps to confirm that sending texts from the fire is possible).
I have seen other's post that GV is working for sending and receiving, so I assume it is possible.
1. What should I check?
2. Is there a special version of GV that I need to install? (I installed build number 0.4.2.38 from my HTC EVO).
I helped someone fix this for their REzound on IRC the other day.
Get a new phone # and resetup your account, it fixed his issues.
Not sure what the problem is.
I just installed Google Voice from the GAPPS package and logged in. I had no problems at all seeing voice messages, and when I used it to send a text it worked fine.
I just can make a phone call with it, but I can use it for SMS both sending and receiving without any issues.
The exact issue the other guy had was, he had the # a really long time, and his account was not setup correctly for some reason, so he couldn't send anything at all through the app since it didn't detect his account basically.

Ah! I've heard about this GAPPS package, but haven't looked into it yet. Maybe it contains a version of GV that is somehow different than the one I used?
Can anyone provide a link, or tell me what forum to search for it? (I'll do a search myself, but am asking just in case I fail to find it).
should I un-install the other google apps I already loaded or will they just get over written?
Thanks, btw!
Edit: As expected, I had poor luck performing a search. Could not find GAPPS on XDA. I did find links on http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com, but there are several, and the post states you need to download the correct version for your device. Which one are people having sucess with on KF?
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Gapps#Google_Apps
Use the one for CyanogenMod 7
Thanks krelvinaz. Don't mean to be a pita, but googlevoice.apk was not in with the other apk's in that zip, unless it's named something else. Looks like it contains only the basic, necessary Google apk's required for most Google services (inc. contact sync, btw, which will be a big help!).
If I ever find the correct zip, do I flash with adb, or install each apk separately?
Will send you a PM.
So I got Gapps zip, extracted the apk's, and copied them to the Fire. Several Google core apk's won't install however: GoogleBackupTransport, GoogleCalanderSyncAdaptor, GoogleContactsSyncAdaptor.
I assume I need that last one to get contacts synced with the Gmail account.
In Google Voice, the button for writing a text now appears, but when I click it, I get a force close. Must need some other core app I guess.
Does Gapps require Root? I've been going round and round with GV on the Fire. Mostly, can't get contacts to show. I was accessing GV through Opera browser. As well as Gmail. I noticed after the last Fire update they included their own mail app and that wiped out my gmail app that I side loaded and worked fine (but now can't run at all) So hoping that Gapps works without root. It is my daughters and I would hate to break it. But I'm trying to get it set up for her as much as possible without rooting, to use Google products as they were intended. As of now, a LOT of pecking from place to place, just to do simple tasks.
A little work around. I'll try to remember how I did it. Has to be done on the stock browser. Google search for Google Voice. One of the results will get you a page that shows a few large cell phones and a blue button that says "send to your phone" or something similar. And it is sending m.google.com/voice as an SMS to your phone. I selected and put in my Google Voice number. Open browser and go to Google voice. This will take you to the crippled version. (where contacts don't show up and voice seems hard to use) it will also come to the notifications bar. Go to that SMS message and click on the link in it. Here's where I can't remember what I did. But you either go to the bottom of the page and switch to "desktop" Version or "more Google products" which will give a long list of icons and respected Google services. Once I opened that link to GV, it opened the normal desktop version. It showed only one contact, me from some earlier attempts. I found a link to "all contacts" and they all showed up. I went to GV settings, (the gear) and set up preferences. In general, always use GV to place calls. Set up your number you want to use for incoming calls. I deselect voice prompt when answering and chose the other option. Sorry that it is so vague. I stayed up late to figure it out. Didn't think to keep track of my steps. I think you need to go to your pc to put contacts in. Anyway, you can use this as a phonebook that you just hit "call" and it will ring your phone and auto dial your contact. Or you can use it to text the contact. I did both without any problems. The first thing I did was bookmark the page. I also copied the link and pasted it into Opera browser. I also bookmarked that one as well.
I will try to paste the link from the kindle when my daughter is done playing games. That might work too.

I am still struggling with this GV app issue on the KF.
I continue to suspect the app is not fully functional because I cannot get one or two google apk's to install in the system/apps folder: GoogleBackupTransport, GoogleCalanderSyncAdaptor, GoogleContactsSyncAdaptor.
I have installed root explorer and believe I have set the folder to RW, but when I try to run the apk's I get an error message, or a "did not install" message (I am not with the Kindle Fire right now, so I'm going from memory).
I believe this should work because several others have posted its working on theirs.
