Hide / Archive Old Texts to save memory - HD2 General

I'm going crazy, after i get a texts it takes up to a minute to load the new message to my conversation. I know this is because i have over 300 texts with this person, but i don't see why i should be required to delete the texts. Iphone had the simple solution of only showing recent texts, and you have to press 'show older messages' to load them.
Anyone aware of a way to do that?
And im just gonna assume the lag while doing anything else on the phone, when you're about to receive a text is just normal. =/

please search some more as your problem has been discussed many many times.
i will help you now but you are expected (under the rules of this site) to search and let us know what/how much you searched before starting a new thread...capish?
first, lets restate the question:
1. your messaging application becomes slow, and you are correct to conclude that it is because of the number of messages in a given thread. any way to speed this up?
2. is there an alternative messaging application that is leaps and bounds better in terms of performance and functionality?
right off the bat, let me just clarify that the bad ass lag you experience when the device is about to receive a message is "normal", in the sense that all people using HTC messaging experience it and have gotten used to it. but that lag certainly doesn't occur on a whole bunch of other windows mobile devices/products.
so...you've asked question 1, and your assumption to archive old messages is a meaningful way out. so to answer question 1, you can use applications like "pimbackup" to periodically archive your old messages.
but the more powerful question is question 2. and the answer is...stop using HTC's ****ty messaging client, and disable that *****! the stock windows mobile messaging client is functionally equivalent and doesn't suffer from the lag issues. this means you won't have to even think about archiving your messages to gain performance.
so, to answer question 2, find a ROM that neatly keeps the HTC messaging disabled (NRGZ's "Energy" ROM series does this). or search for a thread started by me ("ASCIIker") in the HD2 general section for a guide on how to disable the HTC messaging client on stock ROM.
finally, some new versions of the HTC messaging client have appeared that significantly reduces the lag issues. if you read my guide, you might be able to choose better whether you want to stick to HTC messaging (or some newer version of it) or if you would rather be better off with the stock windows mobile messaging client.
good luck! and remember to search search search!

Replying SMS lag.. (Slow loading of text messages)

Hi all,
I've just got my HD2 this morning. I'm having a problem when trying to create an SMS by replying from the text messages tab.
This particular contact has around 500 messages and pressing 'reply' takes more than 20 seconds before even the onscreen keyboard to load for me to type the reply. I've tried other contacts with less messages, whilst it is quick, there is still a noticeable lag to load all of the previous messages.
Is anyone else having this problem?
Yes. The contacts/text messaging app seems to suffer from a lot of slowdown. I also have the feeling it's linked to the number of messages for each contact.
Saving a contact after editing can be slow as well.
I did a bit of a search...looks like this is a problem with the HTC messaging app in Manila 2.5 ..... sigh........ such a fundamental problem!
Too many people complain about SMS issues. SMS functionality should be one of the very first tests you do to a modern mobile device during Q.A.
At least its still good to know that I'll be able to speak with it.
Same here. Too slow..
Here the same problem. Can somebody make a fix for it please?
Delete all the SMS history with the contact who is taking long for the keyboard to load up.
The reason for this slowdown is that it is loading all your SMS messages with that contact, both sent and received. Hence it takes ages to load up.
1. Go to the SMS screen for your slow-loading contact, wait for it to load
2. Press 'Menu'
3. Press 'Delete Messages'
4. Press 'Menu'
5. Press 'Select All'
6. Press 'Done'
Where is the snapdragon?
man I need to get this Phone, but this seems to be the first real let down ,I use lots of SMS and to me deleting is not an option.
Must be found a work around.
HTC definately rushed this ROM.
The calendar bug, the spelling mistake in the connections settings, apparently the speed is slower than the test ROMs, and now this.
Well the only thing that lags with Touch HD on wm6.5 with Manila 2.5 is the HTC SMS.. That what made be believe I should upgrade my device to HD2. Now that I see that the device is also lagging with a dozen of SMSs... Thanks but I will not buy it unless a solution is found. I have more than 2500 work SMS all business related and I CANT FIND A REASON TO DELETE IT.
DIDNT THEY TRY THE DEVICE BEFORE SELLING IT??
EVEN A NOKIA 3310 CAN STORE 500+ SMS !!
Yes a nokia can store that many text, but they arent in a chat type session, thats why it takes so long because it loads all of them in one hit.

Even with Thread mode off and normal SMS display, it is very slow. Try restoring 200 SMS, it will takes 10 mins. Re-access your SMS menu, you will still lag as hell.
Cannot forgive them for making such a mistake.
was going to get it today
My non HTC device loaded with + 250 messages opens the SMS app.in 2 sec. Replying and bringing up the keyboard is almost from instantaneous to 1 sec,but I need to get a WM phone.
Just one question though:
Will this lag still happen if you Disable the HTC Sence UI and went with the WM 6.5 interface?
I've found a workaround for now..
Use the HTC Messaging app in traditional mode. From there, you could reply SMSes using the non-threaded mode. Once it loads, it's pretty quick to open again.
Still..the major lag is still there when you open a contact with many text messages....this is very dissapointing and could even be a dealbreaker for a few people.
Even my TD1 with Manila 2.1 doesn't have this problem.

NO! the problem it's just in senseUI
In the meantime, let your providers and htc know (mail). htc need to release a proper fix for this.
Manila 2.1 on my TP2 did`t have this problem at all.
To be honest .... 2.5 Manila messaging is crap!
I know this isn't an ideal solution, but it'll do for me (for now), and I'm sure some others will be happy enough with it as a temporary fix.
Use Microsoft MyPhone to get all your texts uploaded and then archive them using the web interface. You can then delete as many as you like off the phone and still be happy that you've got a backup online.
Not a solution, but a reasonable workround for now.
Edit: I can confirm that this works. I went to the MyPhone web interface and archived all my text messages. Then I synched from my mobile and it deleted all the local texts that I had archived (in this case, all of them). I can now edit and select contacts with only a slight lag. It's still a crap amount of lag for such a fast phone, but it's a lot better.
They should do like on the iPhone: when you chat with a contact, you get the last 10-15 messages of the thread. If you want to read older messages you press a button on top of the thread that will then show all the others.
+1!! I do think too that it's the obvious solution!!!! Why the hello do HTC's SMS apps display the full thread of SMS's on their app, it's pretty much useless, and causes lags!!! The last 10 sms's like in Outlokk or on the iPhone is enough!
I don't know what the hell HTC's devs are thinking sometimes....

List of all problems with HTC messaging on Leo - please add any of your own

Dear all
bought my HD2 sim-free and have been using it for 1-2 days now.
it is manila 2.5.19211619.0 & rom 1.48.405.2 (71294)WWE
while we wait for HTC to allow us to use our GBP500 handsets to send SMS reliably, I thought I'd compile a list of other problems with the new HTC messaging interface - perhaps if anybody from HTC is reading, they could use it as a sort of wish-list. Feel free to add your own woes.
also, if anybody knows any fixes for the behaviour i am reporting here - please let me know!!
1. It sometimes doesn't send SMS (well-known issue, sure - texting myself seems to do the trick so far but hardly ideal to have to check outbox every half hour)
2. It cannot mark received/read SMS as unread (if i'm wrong here, please let me know)
3. it is difficult to select a whole bunch of messages - you ought to be able to hold down and drag to select, say, adjacent 5 messages in the "all msgs" view, in order to then action them (eg. retry send ! )
4. in all messages view, the side-scrolling bar does not enlarge itself after a short tap, unlike in eg. file explorer.
5. when you are composing a new SMS, as you start typing letters of somebody's name, some of the contact suggestions are associated with that person's mobile number (as expected) whereas other contacts are suggested with their *email address* (even when you have the mobile number for that contact) so that it tries to send the SMS to that person's email address. Not very clever. if anybody knows how to fix this please let me know.
6. if you use PIM backup to restore eg. 500 SMS, you may mysteriously find the following day that many of them have disappeared. spooky.
7. it (HTC messaging) is so arrogant that it provides no easy way for the user to revert to WM SMS program. not very "make it mine" is it HTC?
8. (thanks to DavrosMackenzie below for reminding me) what a WEIRD bug - when you attempt to put a ! or ? at the end of your cursor when composing SMS, the cursor reverts to a random point in the message and your punctuation mark is in the middle of some random word.
UPDATE: I have sent the above 8 items to HTC support via email on their website.
9. there is no "SMS sent" notification as there was in eg. WM5.0
Largely speaking I only see 7) as the issue. If the Windows messaging app were easily available then you'd simply be able to choose between a flawless functional app versus stylish but primitive.
However personally I still haven't found a way to revert the the Windows messenger app, all the methods I've found here on the forum fail to work fully. So then I guess I'm stuck too with the other points mentioned. It's all ostly minor to me except 1) of course. If I need to any more complicated message organizing I just do it through the MS My Phone web interface and sync.
Also 4) is a feature not a bug The expanding scroll bars are only for the default native controls which need to be dragged themselves, hence the expanding button for easy finger usage. The HTC scrollbar doesn't need that as the whole screen reacts to a sliding finger for scrolling the view.
The inconsistency is a bit odd I suppose but that's what happens when your on an evolved platform rather than a new one.
thanks for the LIST, have you send it to HTC yet?
I have been bugging them about the SMS stuck in outbox issue every 2nd day ...
you also missed out the SLOW loading SMS while there are more than 20 sms-s in coversation view.~
hmm...for me its the no. 4 which is a bit irritating but i can live with it...since in my case it shows both the number as well the email for the same name...
btw...i know this works for some people and for some dont, but messaging problem seems to go away if you select
1. GSM in messaging
2. put the local mesaging centre number...
havent faceda any sms problem till now...
Instead of using pim backup you should use the sync application microsoft my phone....
Lag when opening messages, we all know about that though.
This one i've only seen one other person mention and thats when i come to put a ! or ? at the end the cursor jumps to some random point in the message, basically means i have proof read every damn message and its starting to really annoy me.
I've an un-branded Vodaphone device thanks to mobiles.co.uk and have upgraded the ROM from the 1.43 through to 1.61 and this nagging little bug has been present in all.
The predictive text has become alot better, to the point now where i can write txts much quicker but the other problems make txtsing a nightmare compared to the iPhone.
I was so pissed off with the iPhone by the end of my run with it but it could text like a dream compared with this, i miss my apps sure but if the texting would work on the HD2 i wouldn't be considering moving back!
Not giving up yet though, will wait for a few more ROMS to come out and maybe HardSPL.

the slow sms loading buggs me. i have alot of text messages with my girl and It's annoying to everytime wait a minnit or so. also if you push the soft key menu and wait a second It's loads alot faster.
you may aspect from htc with a phone that costs a fortune it would be near perfect. but this one is nearly done. and dont come with the excuse that no phone is good out of the box, i know that but after al the tweaking i have done to this phone im getting the hang of it. but there are more bugs that anoy me.
1 slow downs in the sense interface.
2. the jittering of the keyboard.
3. the ghost typed key issue
4. and all the minor things what are to many to name.
well htc thank-you for this wonderfull phone. now make it mine.....
btw, could someone tell me where i can find the outbox for the sms utility?

To view your outbox, you need to have SMS in traditional mode.
Go to: All mesages > Menu > Settings > Traditional Mode.
Has anyone found a fix for this fundamental function of any phone. And we all know this is not a problem with WM6.5 as alot of us have been using 6.5 for some time (myself on my polaris, using Kostas ROM), so therefore HTC really F#@K this up.
I have another one, the sms notification sound almost never gets activated... I am on 1.43 O2.
Most of the time I have to click "compose new text" when in converstional mode at least 10 times before it actually lets my type! It doesn't matter how many messages I have with that contact so isn't a lag thing!

I got GSM in messaging, and +xxx in the messaging number.
But I still get SMS stuck in outbox every couple of days ...
HTC Messaging is not working with MMS to email. The pictures doesn't have a last name (extension), and will not be reconiced as an .jpg, and therefore not show in correctly.
Larsen
When I create an SMS and enter the first few letters of a contacts name, all available phone numbers for that person are listed. However, the icons indicating the type of contact number (work, mobile, home, etc.) are incorrect. All are displayed as mobile so I do not know which is the actual mobile number and which are the others. Is this the same for everyone else? I've reflashed to 1.48 and installed the SMS patch from HTC.

Woes of Migrating FROM a WM phone (without HTC Sense) TO HD2 and the damned SMS lag

greetings all!
i am a 2 years Tytn2 (HTC Kaiser) user. i just got a shiny new HD2 two days ago. after doing several weeks of reading and research, i knew what to expect. the essence of it was that the HD2 rocks, but the SMS lag issue and dodgy battery life can be crippling to the experience.
i am writing this as a guide for others like myself that have the following requirements/goals with their new HD2s:
1. want to migrate all the SMS messages from previous phone, using either PIMBackup or MS MyPhone.
2. are comfortable with disabling HTC Sense Messaging and reverting back to the native WM6.5 messaging (threaded or classic).
3. want to have an HD2 that plays well with PIMBackup and MS MyPhone so that further backups can be made on the HD2 in case a hard reset is needed, or to flash another ROM, or to migrate to still another Windows Phone.
with the above goals and my numerous different attempts and approaches, i also observed the following "bugs" in addition to the known lagging issues when more than a few SMS messages are present:
1. on a fresh HD2, the obvious approach of restoring with PIMBackup prevents Sense from correctly building its threads. the sorting of the final threads after restoring 6000 messages when viewed in HTC messaging was extremely jumbled up. opening a particular thread took ages (as expected) but it did open correctly and properly sorted. just the main thread list was wacky.
2. on a fresh HD2, MS MyPhone was able to restore in a manner friendly to HTC messaging. HTC messaging showed the main threads list correctly and each thread was well formed. the catch? it took ages! it took almost 8 hours for 6000 messages!
3. either way, NEW SMS messages after completing either of the above restore methods would create a different thread! on closer inspection, i noticed that contacts that were present in my phone ONLY were unaffected by this "bug". however, contacts that were present in BOTH my phone AND my SIM caused HTC messaging to create new threads for SMS messages arriving from such contacts. this means that my restored data was in another thread and the new data received on the new HD2 was in a new thread. WTF?!?
thus, my conclusion was that this is ****! not only does it lag, but it is also not friendly with PIMBackup or MyPhone. on top of it all, once you have your migrated data, newer messages are not added on to existing threads for contacts present in both the phone and the SIM.
what follows is my final idiot-proof tutorial for SMS bliss on the HD2 while maintaining migrated data as well as maintaining the ability to safely migrate it further to another Windows Phone device.
1. first, you have to be willing to sacrifice any new SMS messages on your HD2 that was captured and threaded by HTC messaging. see my note below for more details.
2. go here and get "Zenyee Disable HTC Messaging 1.2.CAB". this wonderful cab is already known to a lot of HD2 users apparently.
3. install the cab and let it soft reset.
4. after the auto soft reset, disable Sense on the home screen.
5. now disable windows mobile's native threaded SMS support by toggling from 0 to 1 the following registry:
Code:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Inbox\Settings\OEM\SMSInboxThreadingDisabled
6. soft reset!
7. now keep your PIM backup handy from your previous device. in my case, this was taken on my Tytn2 where no horrible HTC messaging exists to mess up the data (see my note below)
8. fire up pimbackup and select the archive for restoration. remember to enable "delete all previous messages" (see my note below)
9. let pimbackup perform the restore! with the Sense home screen disabled and no HTC messaging service running thanks to the cab in step 2, you will notice the true speed of the snapdragon processor! my 6000 messages were restored in less than 10 minutes!
10. if you like windows mobile threaded SMS view, go ahead and undo the change made in step 5 and soft reset!
11. after the soft reset, you will again notice the speed of the snapdragon processor. the threads were built in less than 15 minutes!
12. now you can enable the Sense home screen and enjoy the SMS bliss!
catches! there are always catches! the cab mentioned above and my tutorial works perfectly fine on my stock ROM. however, when trying to open SMS messages from the messaging tab within Sense, the device will try to load HTC messaging but no thread will be visible. also, trying to send a message from the call history invoked from the dialer will also not work (because the call history is also part of Sense). similarly, tapping the notification area to reach a new SMS will also bring you to a blank list of threads within HTC messaging.
but the lock screen will take you to the native SMS view just fine! SMS alert tones work just fine! the "new SMS" icon on the notification area appears just fine (but reaching the SMS from the notification area is no longer possible)!
all in all, shame on HTC for showing so much promise with so little testing. it looks nice and professional but its nothing but fluff and eye candy when theres a lot of data. the native implementation by MS is much much better and efficient and almost equally usable because of the HD2's huge screen size.
NOTE: i have noticed that HTC messaging seems to use the SAME database as the native messaging. however, it seems to build its threads within a DIFFERENT "folder" in the native messaging database. this folder is called "Conversations" and will be visible once you activate the native view using the above tutorial. of course, pimbackup will have nuked the contents of this folder if you enabled the option as suggested in step 8. it MIGHT be possible to move messages out of this custom "Conversations" folder back into the native inbox folder. so the only opportunity to try to move the contents of the "Conversations" folder is before step 8. but i strongly suspect that this will confuse the native messaging's ability to build its threads after you migrate archived data on top of new data. i also suspect that creating a pimbackup file on such data will keep the conversations folder in the backup file, thus bloating the backup file. similarly, MyPhone MIGHT also upload the conversations folder redundantly. for me, i only had to sacrifice 1.5 days of new messages but i gained a lot more as described in the requirements earlier! so i recommend letting pimbackup nuke the contents of the folder...then you can nuke the folder itself after you complete my tutorial.

Threaded SMS + Swype + Over 200 Total Messages = WTF

1) Why is there a relationship between number stored text messages and delay time between when phone first lights up until I am unable to unlock the phone and read my message? It seems sometimes when I have even 200+ messages stored, my phone will light up indicating a text is being received, but will "freeze" until it has (what seems to be) re-loaded every text stored. Only then, allowing me to access my new text message. So fukcing frustrating...it has to be Sense related.
- No, turning off Sense does not fix the problem either. I'm stock ROM (2nd to latest ROM upgraded)
2) Why does Swype, in threaded mode, insist on having every message load prior to being able to use it? Again, if a contact has 200+ messages in their thread, the phone is useless until all messages have loaded...
I enjoy using the threaded view, because I'm often referring back to previous text messages in my conversations. I can avert the Swype loading by using traditional mode. As of right now, it's either Swype + traditional or no Swype + threaded. I shouldn't feel I should have to choose, am I right?
I realize I can just delete my messages every 200+ that occur, but I reach that in a couple of days. Deleting takes too long too and going through SMS Backup is a too much of a pain if it's not for 1000+ texts.
I know this is cache/memory related. I wish there was a way to transfer the texts from phone storage to SD storage. I'm running a Class 6 too, so I don't think I can attribute slow processing speeds to the card either.
Thanks in advance. I realize this is MOST likely a repeated question. But I feel I haven't been able to arrive to a just answer from searching.
yep, its an ooold problem with no specific fix other than don't save more than 100 or so txts.
tried the latest rom?
I find that using a custom ROM has pretty much fixed the problem of HTC messageing freezing like that for me. I constantly have 1000+ texts in 3-4 threads, and have minimal wait times for messageing to open and let me reply.
Try using the latest TMO USA stock ROM. This ROM seems to have completely eliminated any problems with the HTC messaging app.
I have twitter send tweets from certain users as txt messages to my phone. The thread for twitter has reached over 1000 messages on a couple of occasions with this new ROM without causing significant lag like the previous stock ROM used to
swype is crap I notice that was the problem why my sms app would slow app...I use the regular keyboard and I have over 300 messages with one contact and its still not slowing up, and on top of that I notice I type faster with the regular keyboard....first time I used the keyboard since i got the phone back in june
I recommend a rom without HTC messaging. HTC messaging is still slow wether its stock rom or custom. Why they decided to uber up WinMo SMS I will never know.

[Q] App to Trim Very Long SMS Thread?

I've currently got about 18,000 texts on my phone going back about 5 years.
This is intentional as I like to occasionally search old texts for specific information, but there is one very long thread (to my girlfriend!) that must have several thousand messages on it alone.
I've read that Android doesn't like massive amounts of SMS's and this can cause the phone to massively slow down, which it has more & more over the past month or so, to the point that there may be a delay of several seconds before I can type on my girlfriend's thread (but the other threads seem ok).
I've got a complete backup of all my SMS's on my PC (via My Backup Pro) so I'm looking for a decent app that can help me trim my text history by date, e.g. I'd like to delete any text older than 1 year etc..
Any ideas or apps to suggest?
Someone must have an idea or know of an app to help me?
