Larger Battery (without larger back plate)

Hi Guys
My friend has a touch HD and recently bought a larger battery from ebay (an 1800mah) but its not one of the larger ones which requires a new expanded back plate for the phone. I was wondering if anything like this was available for the Jade, probably around the 15-1600 mah mark?
Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I can't imagine the one I'm looking for being over 1800mah or so, due to size. What I'm really after is a more powerful battery but at the same dimensions as the current one.
Anyone else shed any light? To make it more difficult, ideally located in the UK

That is impossible. To get more power the battery needs to be bigger.

Larger Battery
Let us know when you find a source closer to Europe. I am interested too for a Touch Cruise!

I've bought one off of ebay for about £7 with free delivery from hong kong, with free delivery! not too shabby I'll let u know how it performs once its arrived.

Says in the review on that link that it doesnt last as well as the standard one

It was only cheap so I guess we'll see. The sheer fact that its higher capacity would suggest it will last longer.
I'm expecting delivery hopefully this week but probably mid next week.

I bough some 2500 mAh NiMh batteries off ebay, my charger measured the best ones at 500 mAh, some where only 350 mAh. With batteries, stick to known brands if you want the best performance.
As nicodbgh said, its impossible. The chemistry in a Li-Ion battery requires a certain amount of volume per Ah, this is not going to be improved on, not significantly anyway. New chemistry may come along that is better, but it won't be Li-Ion.

Battery arrived on saturday and I've put it in the phone. The battery looks identical to the standard HTC one (even has the same "HTC Innovation" text on the front) except that its 1300mah (opposed to the original 1100mah)
It took longer to charge (abut 6 hours) but its only the first cycle. I'll use it this week and see if I notice any jump in battery life.

And the verdict is:
Absolutely rubbish! It takes much longer to charge than the standard battery and so far I haven't had more than 1.5 days of use out of it, thats maybe 10 minutes of calls and 5-10 texts, few mins of internet. I have push mail and data connection constantly turned on and usually get around 3 days out of the standard 1100mah.
Bit of a dissapointment as I would have liked extra life (an extra day) but it was only cheap and at least now we all know. I speak on behalf of the larger batteries with the extended back plate but my advice is stick with the original battery over the 1300mah one.

This is the problem with "no name" batteries. Perhaps it gets better after a few charging cycles.

LG is an Idiot.

Our phones are not inefficient. No not at all. If you think about it, on a 3000 mah battery we get good battery life compared to other phones with the same or bigger battery. But here is my gripe, and it pisses me the hell off. The G2 had a 5.2 inch 1080p display with a 3000 mah battery. Now how the heck can LG be dumb enough to not upgrade the battery when they stretched the screen size by .3 inches and more than doubled the resolution? Thats literally the dumbest thing ive seen come from lg. Albiet everything else is top notch on this phone, and the battery life is still pretty darn good. Its just a stupid move by lg that makes no sense whatsoever. Its like giving a mustang a gas tank the size of a 4 cylinder prius. [emoji57]

Because the battery in the G2 was not removable. It is removable in the G3. That's why.

It is still a stupid move they could not anticipate that allot of people would not want to remove the battery all the time.
Simple concept: Increase the battery capacity with every generation to accommodate the more juice needed. Look at samsung. Their batteries always increased.

I really think its about choosing the right phone for you.
I had my LG for my first day today at work (day 3) and after 14hrs I still have 68% left. OK admittedly its been a very light day in terms of usage but today I am a happy user because I have an awesome display with a great phone with all the features that I was looking for and it was able to get through my day with a great deal of battery life left.
The question you need to ask yourself is have you bought the right phone for your needs?

Lag and stutter? Ohh you mean thw decreased frame rates to save battery life. Yeah you do know that stems from the battery issue correct?
And i dont notice any lag or stutter. Everyonce in a while. But hey its a stock rom. Pretty much expected. The Gs5 is worse...

Their batteries also are always removable. I'm not saying they shouldn't have tried to go with a 3,200 removable. However so many people complained about the sealed in battery, they thought they were giving the people what they wanted. Their battery size technically did increase. The Korean G2 with a removable battery was 2,600 mah and now the international g3 with the removable battery is 3,000 mah. If they would have kept it embedded I'm sure the battery would have been around 3,500 mah.

Decreased frame rates when your playing a game is a problem. Its annoying and ruins the game.

Personally i'm liking the phone so far. The battery life isn't all that bad unless the screen is on most of the time. I'm actually quite surprised that the battery life is that good. My phone usually lasts me a full day even if I leave my house without it fully charged (80% or so).
But of course I have a spare battery with me just in case. Doesn't hurt to be prepared

Yes I love my G3 and i chose it over the m8 and GS5. It's just this one thought that grinds my gears a bit. It is a logical step and it seemed they cheaped out on it.

I was thinking more like a 3500 mah in this phone. It would help allot. Yet they didnt think that they would kill 2 birds with one stone if they increased capacity and added the removable function.

I mean I would have loved more juice too, I'm just going to give them benefit of the doubt and assume, they couldnt keep the bezels as slim as they are and making the battery removable and adding microsd card slot while increasing the removable battery size more than from 2,600 to 3,000.
But i agree 3,500 would probably have been the sweet spot.

Do you guys think a battery manufacturer might be able to produce a 3500mah battery the same size as the stock one? Its okay if it a tighter fit.

Life is about compromises for most people and sadly the same is true about our choice of phone ......

Are you not understanding the fact that it's easier and much more possible for a manufacturer to include a higher capacity battery by making it non-removable? The battery is as good as it's going to get with the current form factory and removability. And LG makes great batteries, so don't expect some eBay store to beat them. You can buy a second battery, get a portable charger, or get a new phone.

A guy on G+ in the G3 community bought a 3500mAh battery on I think Ebay. Yes it's the same size but I think when he took videos it locked or something. Personally I would never buy a cheap battery or a non LG battery for a $600 phone. That's one reason why they catch on fire.
I've owned the G2, Flex and now the G3. I think LG is doing great with the battery life, camera, and design. The Flex had great battery life with the 3,500mAh battery but is noticeable bigger then the G3.

I can deal with the battery....what's unacceptable is the lag.
Its almost putting me on the verge of never buying an LG ever again.
The HTC M7 was blazing fast compared to this and made the phone a enjoyable experience.....optimize the software you F*ckwits.
I hate lag, I hate it I hate it........the saving grace which is starting to wear thin is that its so pretty to look at, that is untill I turn the thing on and the lag infuriates me again.

No problems here with battery life with my kind of use, 2 days of normal use till charge

Lag, lag lag...All these posts about lag. As a former Nexus 5 owner, these lag complaints are what infuriate me. Change your animations to .5, switch to ART. Install nova or another 3rd party launcher. Personally, I have the 3/32 on Sprint and I don't see the lag. Again, I'm coming from N5 so you'd think I'd notice, right? Well, I don't. I switched to nova for about a week and then I switched back to stock. With animations at .5, I think stock is just as fast. Seriously people, if the phone disgusts you that much, return it. There are plenty of others, like me, even professional phone reviewers, who think this is currently the best android device available. Also, I know you're all entitled to your opinions as am I, not trying to start a flame war here. :end rant:

Life expectancy?

How long can one expect a device such as the note 3 to last. Let's say the device in question never is dropped or mishandled. Now with heavy use on a daily basis would you expect all internals and externals to perform flawless for 5+ years. What would the max be. Looking for answers from people who know not guessing please. I'm just curious as many probably are as well. Thank you for all the views and responses.

I am not sure. I am on my second note 3 now since they seen to have an use with the sandisk ultra micro sd card. The phone cooked itself while charging. I can't speak to the actual internals, qa process in the factory and expected life expectancy resulting from those either being robust our weak.

I would not expect this device to last 5 years. I've used this device heavily - every day - for almost a year now. So far the plastic chrome overlay around the outside has cracked near the volume button - and it was not dropped and it was in a case yet the plastic chrome cracked. I used superglue to patch that crack. Apparently, the silver plastic chrome cracking is not abnormal - especially near the S-Pen (though I never use mine so it didn't happen for me there). I've sat on my phone in bed once (I usually carry it in my back jeans pocket) and it showed no signs of problems - I'm a 5'11 220 pound male so I'm not small. The screen is holding up VERY well - no obvious scratches even though now I go case free (and have for months now).
Of all the phones I use (HTC MyTouch, Motorola Droid 1, HTC Thunderbolt, iPhone 4s, iPhone 5, Note 3) - I give the Note 3 very high ratings for durability. It is extremely light - and the big screen allows me to do what I want without hinderance.
Will it last 5 years? I doubt it mostly because of software reasons (most Android phones stop getting updates around 5 years out). Will it last 2 years? I'm betting on it - not planning to upgrade till 2016. Happily running Alliance Rom Build 1 - impatiently waiting for Build 2.
I'm running an Anker (stock sized) battery from Amazon - and for the price - will get a new one next year to keep the thing "fresh"

Thanks for the responses so far. Very good posts. I have had mine half a year it's still in mint condition. I use a neo hybrid case with no screen protector use to use one but I take care of my devices. If I was a dropper I'd have a glass screen protector and otter case lol. I was running alliance now trying jasmine 2.4 waiting super impatiently for a port of the note 4. Yes my last device Droid 4 lasted 3 or 4 years then it went haywire. Hoping my phone lasts awhile interested to see what the note line has to offer for the next few years to come.

No one "knows" relative to the Note3, it's only been out a year!
However....it is just another electronic product. It appears well built, depending on how often it's charged....over 5 years you may need one or two new batteries but they're user-replaceable.
AMOLED displays should last 8 to 10 years and flash memory should last for about 200,000 write operations.
In other words....it should easily last 8 to 10 years....the "life" of its least reliable, non-user replaceable component.
That presumes the cellular service providers still support the current protocols.

Mine's less than a year old and it just died. Picked up to use it and it's dead. Can't wake it up and it only sits there and gets hot while charging. I baby all of my stuff-this sucks. Only communication I have.

I'd say you have a dead (shorted) battery. Pull the battery and plug into charger....will it start now? If nothing else...unless you got it the day it came out, it should still be under warranty.

Wasn't the battery. Got it replaced by Verizon. Something seriously went wrong with the device. All good now!

Pmfji, but I have had a similar experience. Set up my Note 3 to charge one night, went to sleep, woke up and I could fry a virtual egg on it. The temp was some ridiculous number I can't recall. Totally freaked, thought the thing might explode. Mind went into overload, gotta figure this out, before it burns out!
Kept repeating the mantra, "this is just a computer", over and over. In a former life I used to be a 'Wintel' power user or so I used to think.
Racing through all the possible scenarios, what could be the issue? I checked my tools, not only was the temp outrageous, but the CPU frequency was through the roof as well! Noting the super high temp over a long period—a few HOURS; finally, I thought to pull the battery.
For those who know, not an easy effort given a Zerolemon case (think Outterbox) and humongous, heavy battery amidst visions of seared flesh! ?
Battery out, I could think more clearly. Letting the thing sit and cool for a half hour or so. I sat hoping, whatever the issue, the battery pull killed it. While I struggled to put my foggy brain into overdrive. Not the way to start the day, before breakfast and before my first cup of coffee! Imagine, wake up, grab the phone, cut the alarm, then ? wtf!
Thinking on it, I figured it had to be a problem with some very recent software installed on my—Rooted, Xposed, and otherwise stock Note 3. Could it be one of the Xposed modules??
I had, a couple of days before, after a short stint with 3c's "Battery Manager", swaped it for 3c's "Toolbox Pro" (which among MANY, MANY, MANY tools includes the Battery Manager Pro).
Daunting, comprehensive apps both, of which my primary focus was, at the time, facilitating the Battery Manager so it would provide relatively useful and accurate readings of the Zerolemon's 10,000 mAh battery level at any given time. An effort which was driving this tinkerer absolutely batty! ???
So, after several courses of, pull the battery, think a little, place the battery, watch, feel the temps rise, and pull the battery, the damned thing just would not stop! Finally, I used Toolbox Pro's "CPU Manager" and "Task Manager" to determine which app was monopolizing the CPU percentage use/time; and, concurrently causing the insane CPU frequency, and ultimately frying my phone. Needless to say, the device was not only super hot, but irritatingly sluggish which made this a tediously slow process.
Anyway, culprit found,Titanium Backup and that app was history. Actually, that may have been my first use of Toolbox Pro's "App Manager". One or the other….
Which app was it? Unfortunately, I do not recall, maybe a record is in the logs. How high did the temps go? Again, can't recall, I can vouch it was higher than any temp I had experienced on a Note or any computing device. How's my Note 3? Well it was, well—fine! Showed no consequences, nothing.
That is til I screwed the sound/volume (Wanam and another Xposed module poorly coincide when both utilize the volume button to trigger different functions), but that's another story.
For the record, I am on my FOURTH Note 3!! My present and last Note 3 is suffering the same sound/volume issue, a tinkerer's fortune. Though my first ROM flash should correct that issue.
Hmmm, now how do I flash?? Odin (isn't that a Norse g_d?), TWERP (isn't that some sort of butt humping??), SafeStrap (isn't that a sexual device hung from a ceiling beam??), duhhhh another confused newb….

You said it yourself you left it on the charger all night and woke up and it was hot. You can't leave a phone on a charger all night sleep for 8 plus hours that would fry it and it would be hot overcharging is really bad.

I leave my phone plugged up overnight, every night. I have had a replacement phone because the proximity sensor failed, but I've had this one for ~6 months and it's never overheated or done anything like above. Battery life is still great.

+1. Never had a problem with any device charging overnight, be it phone, tablet or laptop.

I leave my Note 3 plugged up All Night, EVERY Night. Anywhere from 5-12hrs depending on the day of the week & how many beers I drank the night before. I've NEVER had anything close to that happening. I do have a Great Battery app, Battery Doctor but I don't think it would stop that from happening if it happens so easily/frequently by charging them to long.as you suggest. There was definitely something funky going on with this guys Note 3. My Note 3 got REALLY Hot one time, while I was at work & it was Off the charge. I actually got a System Temperature Notification that it was over heating. I clicked on my Battery app & it had already found the culprit. I had turned Off Google+ Auto Backup Pic/Vids feature about 2 months prior to this. That morning when I got to work I turned it back on. Google+ started backing everything up at one time, >10gb. & started to Heat it up. The app now will Not backup everything at once unless you click the backup at once option. That was fixed in one of its updates.

We have now read many articles, blogs and forums on the S6 ... I was just interested in what your thoughts were thus far, and it really boils down to these poll choices.

My wife and I both own S3's and in the morning on more than a few times we have forgotten to charge one phone and just quickly traded to one of our extra OEM batteries that are charged and off we went. We are busy all day with work and such and we don't have the luxury of having a desk at work to be charging our phones to last all day. That is really what disappointed me. We are both ready to upgrade, but are not even sure what to get now since we both really like using the S3.

But would you forget to charge your phone if all you had to do it set it down on a plate?
Also, you really, really can't compare the battery life of an S3 to current gen phones.

Agree that it'd be hard to forget to charge the phone when just dropping it on a plate but am I willing to pay more for said plate just for convience? The phones will already command a premium price and the wireless charging plate doesn't come in the box.

I am not comparing S3 battery with new phones... its not what i typed...
All im saying is that i enjoy just simply popping the battery in the back in 5 seconds and being on my way. That is my preference. If the wireless charger comes included and isnt finicky on placement then yea. In any case i have nothing more to contribute. I really like the way the S6 looks though.

Taking out the battery has saved my rear end many times. Also, unless it comes with a 128gb of useable storage I would need a SD slot. I hope that they wouldn't do the same to Note5.

I get what you're saying, I really do, but the battery life on newer devices are just in a different league, and keep in mind you're 3 generations behind. Assuming the S6 has similar battery performance to that of the S5, you will be able to use your phone twice to almost 3 times as long as your current S3.
Also remember, with Quick Charge 2.0, you go from flat to 50% in 30 ish minutes. If you notice you've forgotten to charge your phone when you wake up, plug it in and by the time you head out the door it'll have quite a bit of juice. Again, given the stamina of these new phones, at 50% you're still looking at what you would consider a days worth of usage. The Note 4 comes with a QC2.0 charger, I'm assuming the S6 will as well, so there's no extra charge for this.
It's not perfect, just want to point out that it's not like how it was just even a few short years ago. For example, between I've been running a Z2 and Z3 for the last year or so and with the stamina these devices have, I've never ever gone flat before a day is over. This is including those days where I've had to take a red-eye flight, used the phone the whole flight to listen to music and wasn't around a wall plug the next day. Not a full 48, but a solid 36hrs of moderate to heavy usage.

No due to all of the below:
1. No SD card - I am not paying threefold for internal storage
2. No removable battery - I keep my phones for a long time so I like to have an option to replace battery that won't hold charge anymore
3. Exynos CPU - no more Cyanogenmod means at best I'm stuck with touchwiz, thanks but no, I don't like that bloat on my phones

I need to get away from Sony. I love the phone, but their mobil division is unstable, and I want to switch to a company that is more secure. Samsung S6 won it over for me above the M9 and any other phone

no to all of the above.. even if I was to agree on losing the up until now standard Galaxy features of the battery and SD I would rather get a Nexus

Here's one way to get a new battery

My Moto X (2013) is out of warranty and has battery that is weaker and weaker. I checked with a local battery shop (well-known US chain, often located in shopping centers and strip malls). They ordered a replacement battery overnight and replaced the "unreplaceable" battery. Pretty tricky work, I think -- check the iFixit videos and you'll see. Only problem now is a hairline crack the guy made in the back of the phone along the edge. I decided not to worry about it. The guy felt bad, so and waived his labor charge. I felt bad for him, actually.
I suspect when Moto does a factory repair, it just pulls these backs and replaces them.
Anyway, it's great to have a new battery. I prefer my Moto X to any of the current phones, which are all too plasticky or too big, not to mention too expensive.

I've depleted it and am now recharging it from zero. I'll post some results after I do a couple of checks.

I don't think u should have depleted it to zero. New batteries like to be recharged alot. If you deplete the battery to less than 10% it goes bad alot quicker. Keep that in mind.

Ugh. I didn't know that. I just wanted to get a clean reading. Oh, well.

How much did it cost approximately?

The original price was $79 (USD) parts and labor, plus $10 overnight shipping. The guy knocked it down to $39 total because of the hairline crack. A lot for a phone battery, I know, but I wasn't willing to take on the job myself.

I don't think that really matters nowadays anymore. They are all lithium ion accumulators now and there it really doesnt matter if you charge it full or not etc.

not sure what your phone's status is (rooted, ROM version, carrier, etc) - but my battery life was fine on 4.4.2 until I unlocked the bootloader and installed the OTA 4.4.4. Then it started going downhill. After trying several custom ROMs (including LP), I was beginning to believe that my battery was dead too. But then after installing 5.1 LP, battery life is back to normal again!
So, it might help to indicate what your phone's status was prior to getting a new battery so that others can reference from there.

My phone's a Moto X 1053 GSM Developer's Edition bought in November 2013. My carrier is TMobile in the USA. I'm running 4.4.4, which I installed as soon as it was released (in Sept. 2014?). Serious battery weakness didn't show up until 3-4 months ago, so that was already some months after the 4.4.4 upgrade.
My phone is unlocked and rooted. I don't play video clips as a rule, nor do I use location services. I haven't been using the battery saver feature, though.
With my new battery, I'm seeing improvement, but I still haven't run the numbers yet. I will do that as soon as I can manage it.

O.K., here are some measurements. "Old battery" refers to my original Moto X battery after 19 months of steady use. "New battery" refers to the OEM battery installed by a technician at a battery store (see above):
In battery saver mode:
OLD BATTERY: 9-10 hours
NEW BATTERY: 18 hours
In normal mode (but still without location or bluetooth):
OLD BATTERY: 6-8 hours
NEW BATTERY: 12-13 hours
I haven't run tests with location or bluetooth on, as I almost never use those.

Any info on the specific battery model?

Actually mlodykaras is right. Modern day lithium ion battery doesn't like to be drained and preferred to be top up well in advance. On the other hand the old NaCD batteries from the 90's have a memory effect and should not be topped up until it's running low.
