not sure if this is a common problem. my s5 has been turning the display off on me whenever I bump the phone. seems to be doing this when the phone is hit on the top back of the phone. the lcd just goes off. when I hit the home button or press the power button, the lights on the menu and back of the lcd light up, but the lcd stays dark. then after about 20-30 seconds I can get the screen to go back on.
the phone is not restarting, its just...turning the lcd off.
anyone else duplicating this issue?
Exactly same problem I faced with my 2 Galaxy S5 (Black&White) variants..
Both times I've to take it to Samsung Care centre..

I asked them, what was actual problem?
For 1st phone, they said it was a software problem. And they return it to me within 3 days..
But for 2nd phone, they said it was a hardware problem. And they return it to me after 12 days..
From what I can tell its a loose connection to the display connector.
I havnt taken it apart to look at it exactly but if you pull the battery and gently press the screen and back cover with your fingers up and down the case on the sides, then replace the battery, it will most likely come back on.
Just a guess as I have seen a couple of friends with this issue. Take it to your local Samsung Service Centre.

Yesterday for no reason my screen has stopped working. At first when I tried to press pause on WMP the screen flickered and moved to the far right. Whenever I put pressure on the screen it flickered and shifted. I did a soft reset and everything went fine. An hour later it started again but much more pronounced.
I tried slightly flexing the unit and the screen came back on but it was no longer responding to the stylus. As it is now the screen is blank and does not come back on.
Anyone had similar problems?
I think a cable has come loose inside for some reason.... has anyone opened their unit? can this be the case?
The unit is under waranty and I have suscribed a special insurance to cover all problems but if the unit is easy to open and I just need to plug a cable back I would prefer to do this rather than wait for a repair....
Help please!!!!!

If you have a warranty and special insurance DO NOT open your unit. It will void everything. Send it in and let them take care of it.

T-Mobile fixed my unit allright.... Just a pity they can't seem to ship it back to me....
I have a serious problem. I noticed a bug in the Desire alphas where sometimes when the backlight went off during a call it would not come back on when the i took the phone away from my face. It always came back on eventually.
Ok now yesterday I flash alpha 8 and it worked fine. Now all of a sudden I reboot my phone bc the battery dies and the backlight won't come on at all! I know the phone is on because the haptic feedback and cap buttons are on and if I leave it on I can tell it's getting notifications.
How am I supposed to fix this?! I can't even see anything to get into recovery! My phone is unusable.

Load into bootloader
Press power button once and wait about 20 seconds
press volume down once then hit power button once
Wait about a minute and move the trackball down slowly 3 time and press it
Scroll it down once and press it four times

Unless your screen is broken you can always boot into recovery.
Take out the battery, then put it back in.
Hold the trackball down as you power on, this will boot you into fast boot.
Select bootloader, then select recovery. and bam your in recovery and can reflash.
I can get my phone into recovery. When I adb in i can push the phone into recovery, then when i hit adb devices it shows my phone and says recovery.
the problem is the backlight is not on even when i am in recovery. i would say the screen broke, but it seemed like a software problem, because it was just slow to come back on. It still always came back on. then I left it in my car chargine and it never came on again. The phone seems to be working fine though.
Kind of off topic, but did your call screen do this before flashing to Desire at all? Did you recently install a screen protector? I had problems with the PhantomSkinz screen protector making the proximity sensor less sensitive and behaved exactly how you're describing...as soon as I took it off it started working again. I'm now using a dcmugen88 screen protector and it works great.
interesting. i have one of those bodyglove or whatever protectors. best buy glued it onto my lcd. i suppose it could have started around that time. but would the proximity sensor still be deactivating the lcd even when its booting up or in recovery?
Oh, I must have overlooked that. The screen protector wouldn't cause any issues on startup or in recovery... guess it must be the rom then.
well, figured it out.
warning to n1 users: watch that lcd screen under the glass. its not nearly as sturdy as the glass cover.
the lcd/digitizer screen under my glass got cracked and stopped working. no drop, no warning, no funny colors. htc does not cover this in the warranty no matter how good the actual phones condition is.
i almost didnt get another n1, a phone thats inherantly weak (i found dozens of similar reports over the web) is not exactly a good case for a system with no insurance, no store to walk into, and very unhelpful support. they try to be very nice, but the rep i talked to couldnt even tell me whats covered and not. he just said let us charge 500 bucks to your card and we will ship a replacement, then decide if we think you have to buy it once we get your old phone. i demanded to talk to someone who did know. his manager denied hearing about lcd screen problems... after the original rep said he and htc knew this was a common problem. google didnt even return my email when i first contacted them saying my backlight was broken.
so again, be careful and get a good case.

I had an exam and removed the battery for my phone for the duration. When I put it back in, the bottom half of my screen stopped responding to touch. The screen itself is unharmed and uncracked. The S Pen still works flawlessly. However, the bottom half of the screen ("above" about 890 pixels on the Y axis) simply does not respond to normal touch. In addition, the volume buttons no longer change my notification volume. They still work for music volume, just not touch volume. When I long-press the power button, the power menu sits at the very top of the screen and has black covering the whole bottom of the screen for some reason. When I receive calls, the buttons are right at the top. Because of this, this seems to be some sort of software issue, but I have no idea what would cause it. Has anyone with more experience with Samsung devices seen this before? Multiple restarts and battery pulls have done nothing.
EDIT: In case anyone else encounters this, it had something to do with my case. I think my phone thought it was a smart cover for some reason. I enabled and disabled smart cover and then removed and replaced the case. It's working fine now.
EDIT: Never mind, that was a coincidence. The issue is DEFINITELY that the phone thinks it has a smart cover on it, but it has nothing to do with my own case.

I've had much the same problem. While the S-Pen was able to make selections that the touchscreen wouldn't, other S-Pen functions such as Air Command and being able to start an Action Memo wouldn't work. Waiting for an extended period of time (like 24 hours) and all of a sudden it started working again. However, while I was waiting, rebooting - even performing a factory reset - didn't' fix it! I just now rebooted it and it's not working again, and it's not in a case.
Where do you find the option to enable and disable Smart Cover? On the Note 2, it was (apparently) under Security / Device Administrators, but I don't find it there. The only option I could find was in Accessories / S View Cover / Automatic Unlock but changing this setting (including rebooting between settings) hasn't solved it.

Sadly, it was just coincidence that it randomly stopped happening when I enabled and disabled the auto-unlock feature with Smart Cover. My phone started doing it again and I've been unable to repair it. I went to Verizon and they wiped my phone before telling me I'll just have to get it replaced with a refurbished one. Very frustrated. Shame there aren't any AOSP based ROMs yet (like CyanogenMod)-- they'd probably fix it since the cover thing wouldn't be a feature.
Bump.
Anyone know of the APK which would handle S View Cover behavior? If we were to disable that I imagine the problem would go away. I'm still not totally sure of the origin of the issue, but it seems to come from a combination of hardware and software problems. The hardware sensor thinks I have the case on, so the software changes things around. When I call people, I get the S View Cover style call screen. If I change the toggle in accessory settings to automatically unlock the phone when opening the cover, hitting the lock button automatically unlocks the phone as though I had no lockscreen. However, when this is disabled, the lock screen is NOT in the S View Cover form-- it looks stock. This confuses me.
Any ideas from anyone else getting the issue?
Same experience
Just to add my experience as I go. This afternoon I received an error that my SMS data could not be downloaded. Upon sliding down the notifications I was unable to control much. I ripped the majority of my hair out over this.... My pen works flawlessly everywhere though. I eventually discovered it works fine on the bottom half as you described. I have to run to some appointments, but I'll touch back after I try a few things.

Maybe it was caused by the battery insertion or backplate replacement. Perhaps too much pressure or an uneven pressure damaged the circuitry, which is now loose and causing the intermittent error.
Or perhaps it was a static discharge from the battery.
Both cases seem to me to be warrenty items.

I thought the only thing necessary to unroot is to flash the stock ROM. The download is linked from the de la Vega post.

I have the same issue. I ve been trying to understand why this happened but no luck. I tried everything from updating to reseting. I first noticed it when i took the battery out as well. but the problem kinda fixed it self so i thought the phone has a spaz or something. but when i removed the battery again it happened again.
I took it to the people i bought it from and all they can say is cause there were a couple of scratches on the side of the case that it may not fall under warranty...
i was pretty angry cause its only two months old and the warranty is for a year. and the problem started happening while i was overseas so its been like that for almost a month. hopefully the sales guy is just talk cause its not up to him its just his "opinion" as he put it.
Did they explain to you why this happened? or if this is a common issue?
Hope your new phone is ok
I have this problem intermittently also. Exactly as described above.

I have the solution!
Please. Let me know it worked for you, so people that doesn´t like to post and only read can solve this problem.
The Problem:
The half bottom screen is not working. Including the back button, the option button and the home buttom. they only work if you use the S Pen. Except for the home button. The volumes button do not work either. So the Solution is this..
take off the battery while the phone is on. YES, do not turn off the telephone and the take off the battery. Just take off the battery while the phone is on. It should work. I hope this is the solution.
One more thing. Do not allow your phone to dried up the battery completly so this wont happen again. It is better to turn it off before it dries up.!
Please let me know if it worked for you! I will let you know if this problems start again and if was only an coincidence.Hopes it not!
This tough me a good lesson! never buy a Phone from not trusted retailer, it is better to pay the full price a good store. The people that sold me the phone has a crappy warrraty like if the screen it cellphone is complete off they wont allow me to use the warranty and my phone had faulty battery conecction so it was off. then I paid 100 dollars to be repaired then this problem.
Ok, guys please let us know if it worked so people start saving their phone
Just happened to mine as well
Hard reset didn't work, on the phone with support trying to request a replacement now.
Finally Solved!
Hi
I had same problem
I did everything u said like:
mega wipe and changing rom
custom roms
taking out battery when it's on ( I Did this but I don't know It had any effects on my phone or not!)
taking out external card
But I still Had the Problem
Solution:
But I had a flip cover and I separated that from phone and thanks God,surprisingly It's Fixed and it works like a charm!!! after that I used my original cover and there is no problem till now.
Good Luck
Had the same problem of touch not working.
I tried everything as suggested by the members but my Note 3 is still not working right.Touch not responding all of a sudden in the bottom part of screen after i removed the battery for sim change. Please suggest something.

I haven't gone back to refresh my memory but it seems to me that all these occurrances were caused by removing the back cover. Try removing it and the battery and firmly press on every spot with your thumb. First place the device face down on table padded with a single layer of a blanket. Remove the SIM and SD card and firmly reinsert. Press the back cover on and try it, then return it for warranty if it is still bad.

I also was faced with this issue today at the start of my morning BUT I FOUND A SOLUTION
I have a Sprint Galaxy Note 3 N900P Stock ROM/ no root, no mods/custom kernels/boots etc...
My device side effects were
The bottom half of my screen was not responding to my fingers,
When you press the Power Button, The options appeared on the top section of the screen instead of being the center
When I press the volume up/down keys, The volume would raise and lower, But the screen that pops up and shows you the volume had increased or decreased didnt show up
Only way to use device was with S Pen
Basically all the issues everyone listed, I had them.
Now my solution; if the issue is a hardware issue.
After dissembling my phone to see what each hardware part of the phone controls, I've come to the conclusion that there was an issue with my USB Dock Connector section of the phone. I uploaded a image pointing which connector controls it. I tried to just wipe and clean it up a bit because mines had some residue on the underneath of it. Then I plugged it back in and it started back to work %100. After I tried restarting it a few times and shaking the device up, it still works; Although I am still going to order a replacement USB Charging Port with flex cable just in case.
fixed.
This is the definitely the hardware problem.
most likely happen if u ever dropped ur phone to the ground ----------- and reboot ur phone some what later time. (can be days or months).
Temp Solution to this problem is...
face down your phone to the flat floor or a table, gently hit the back, strong enough to shock the devide, but not that strong to crack your screen.
one other simple way is to drop your phone to the floor, screen is facing down, from about 30 cm high from the floor.
"simply, hit your device like you used to fix your ur old TV. "
that is just a temp. GL.
My Galaxy S4 turned off randomly. I attempted turning it back on via the power button and it would not respond. Then I tried taking out the battery and replacing it, the device vibrates with the Galaxy S4 logo showing up for about a couple seconds, then the screen goes blank again. I even tried placing a battery from a different S4 - still doesn't work. I tried opening the devise verifying the power button and it seems to be fine (but not sure). I tried hitting the power button on a flat surface a couple of times which in fact fixed the problem but then the issue proceeded to re-occur again.
I am stuck and need help ASAP. The phone has not warranty and I have 8 months of contract to go. Please assist. I would really appreciate it.
Phone model: SGH-I337M
Anybody know what's wrong with my device?
The power button has begun to fail. Whacking it on a flat surface temporarily fixed the issue, but the only permanent fixes are to either replace the button, which is exceedingly difficult without precision tools, or to replace the motherboard.
Even though your S4 is no longer under warranty, I still would bring it to a service center to have it looked at. They can determine exactly what the problem is and also tell you how much it will cost.
i had nearly same problem. ( my issue was boot screen kept coming back without opening the phone.. my power button was stuck..)
i solved my problem by hitting power button to a hard surface for a day or two..
then it happened again..
i solved my problem with a pressured liquid used for cleaning electronic cards " contact cleaner"
while applying this be generous. (do not sprey into camera it will find a way in).
make your phone 90 degrees and spary contact cleaner into your power button..
( mine got cleaned and now i use it for 3 months without any problems.)
also after all contact cleaner dries away. ( contact cleaner smells weird you dont want to smell it be precautious . and also your phone will smell for 4 5weeks more .. i used some drops of cologne on my board to reduce smell of cleaner )
refer to videos while opening your phone. you can find good resources ..
That's actually sound advice, though just to play it safe I would disassemble the S4 and remove the motherboard. The contact cleaner could damage the screen, the polycarbonate, or both.
I just found this post after having the exact same problem, the whacking worked a treat...let's see how long it lasts!
Hey guys
Just bought my moto x play. And on the same day it screwed on me. So after i got the phone i updated to Marshmallow, And left it in my room to charge. On my way back I realized my phone was not turning on. I turned it off and turned it back on but nothing happened. I only felt the vibration of the phone and seeing the screen light up black pixels (no idea what the proper term is)?
I can still use the camera with the twist gesture and i can still hear the phone taking photos when i click the volume rocker. But the screen is black and i cannot ue touchscreen to take phtos. I also noticed that the LCD lights up black again if i lift my phone up. Just like moto display would do with notifications. I also hear notifications on my phone but nothing else. I have serached for a fix but nothing anyone else have this porblem?

Most likely it's a hardware issue. Are you able boot into bootloader mode with screen working?
boot into recovery and factory wipe it.

I faced similar issue with my previous droid maxx, phone was on but only the screen's backlight came up. It happened all of the sudden when I was watching youtube. I thought the LCD ribbon connection was loose so I disassembled the whole phone and put it back on but no success. I ended up leaving it on the desk and one day the screen woke up on its own. The battery was at 1%, not sure if that triggered anything that fixed the problem. Maybe you could leave the phone until it drains out the battery and see if it could work for you.
Another way is to get into fastboot or recovery and do a factory reset
Maybe the flex cable is loose or disconnected
Assuming you haven't unlocked the bootloader, ask for replacement.

Yea I am. I have to wait until Monday for a reply
Hi Danny_Cai. I'm currently experiencing the same issue with my Moto Z play smartphone. So I wanted to ask, did you just replaced the phone in the store? And what was an actual cause of this problem?
Possible solution Motorola X-Play Back light Problem
Hi Danny,
I had a similar problem with my phone. Not under warranty so took the back cover off using a T3 star bit.
Radio Shack probably has it also.

At the bottom of my phone, there are two spring contacts. One was sitting loose and must have been causing some kind of problem. It fell out, and I did not reattach it. Haven't had a problem since.

It may be something as small as that. Not sure what it was for but haven't noticed any difference in the phone.
Hope you find your solution.
