Right now I am running a AT&T Galaxy S4 rooted with towel root 4.4.2, and I have to send in my phone for repair because the screen is messed up. I think it is running the NC1 bootloader, as under Setting->About Device-> Baseband version and it is i337UCUFNC1. I have looked over the ODIN back to stock guides and do not see a stock rom for the NC1. Was wondering if its alright to use the NB1 update or should I be looking for something else. The build number is KOT49H.I337UCUFNC1. Thank you for any help.

There is no full firmware for NC1. We only have an update over NB1.
You can safely flash NB1 using Odin.
Gotcha, thank you for the clarification .
So I can grab any NB1 stock file? Also is there any reason why not to grab the file from Sam Mobile?

Sammobile for some reason doesnt have the newer firmwares, has only MDB and MDL.

Use Odin and flash either the MK2 or NB1 update, and then follow http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2680868 to get to rooted 4.4.

Thanks for the reply!
Where can I find the MK2 or NB1 Update? Is there one safer to update to than the other (as I see different instructions for each) ?
Thanks again!
MK2 is a little easier, since you won't have to downgrade. You can find links to both in the OP of the All things MK2 and NB1 thread under "return to stock".

MK2 is the last firmware version with an exploitable kernel that allows for a direct rooting method, e.g. saferoot. You can flash the MK2 Odin .tar in Odin's PDA slot(AP in Odin v3.09+): http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23501681358541050
From there you can obtain stock, rooted, NC1(latest 4.4.2 firmware) by following this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=52167774&postcount=3
Hello,
I am on 4.4.2 NB1. Is there any benefit to go from NB1 modem to NC1 modem? Is there any + side? Would I be able to go back to NB1 in case world turned upside down?
Thanks,
Unlike NB1, you can root NC1 with Towelroot, and yes, you can go back to NB1 if you need/want to.
My S4 came with NB1 out of the box. I took the NC1 OTA, rooted, debloated, installed xposed, etc.
No regrets at all.

I am on NB1 rooted (using rootable NB1 odin file). My concern was modem wise! Will it make any difference to go to NC1 ?

If you're not having any issues most likely the new modem won't any difference

I missed the part in your original post wherein you specified that you were on NB1 rooted, and assumed you were misapplying the term "modem," given that anyone who's capable of flashing only the modem would hopefully already know that if they're able to flash one, they're able to flash another, even if it's their previous one.
Apparently I gave you too much credit.

I was worried it would break/lock something that might prevent going backwards! (Like what happens to bootloaders...I know bootloader is different than modem, but I thik it is better to ask beforehand).
Helping out a friend with an S4 with on NB1. Phone has been sitting for a while. He wants me to set it up with a custom rom or at least root it. Have dabbled with the Verizon S4 but never with the AT&T version.
Can the bootloader be unlocked on NB1?
If not, an you go back to an older release to unlock the bootloader?
Is there a prefered root method for NB1?
Is there any benefit in staying with Nb1 vs taking the OTA?
Thanks
BB

The bootloader stlll cannot be unlocked on ATT S4. We still have a working recovery "safestrap". Safestrap doesnt replace existing stock recovery but is available during normal boot mode through a splash screen on bootup. Use safestrap version 3.72 or 3.75 and flash into stock slot itself. In case of issues, the phone can be recovered by Odin flashing the full NB1 firmware.
NB1 is not rootable. The next version NC1 is rootable with "towelroot". The latest NI1 is not directly rootable but can be rooted by Odin flashing the NC1 kernel.
You can manually update to NC1 and root.
There are a large number of ROMS that can be flashed on I337 including google play edition ones. AOSP/AOKP roms dont work though.

So the easiest would be to Odin to a stock NC1 and you towelroot.
Any links to the stock NC1?
Thanks

We do not have odin file for both NC1 and NI1. There is an update file that can be used with "adb sideload" to update your phone. How to update to NC1 is there in the link I provided.

I tried towelroot to see if it works. It worked without a hitch. So I guesss the newest version works with NB1.
Thanks
i root my gs4 with odin, everything went fine but I wanted to get my gs faster so i downloaded kernel for gs4 and flashed it. mistake here. i didnt check if it supports 4.4.4. it only support devices under 4.3 so.. no wifi. that was the problem i had other than that, all was good. than I downloaded some OTA file for my gs4 and when i tried to flash it with safestrap, it kept said fail. so i thought it's maybe because i already have OS installed... so i wiped system, data and i tried to flash that OTA file, fail again. now im screwd. there is no OS on my gs4. when i trun it on, it vibrates, than reboots and than goes into Odinmode and say something like "nornal boot not possible" in red.
so i spent couple days searching how to get my phone work again but everything i tried didnt work. and for galaxy s4 sgh i337 nj4 version 4.4.4 it even made me think it was made just for me.
i tried kies, failed it told me to do emergency recovery but my phone does not show on list.
can anyone please help me.. Im new to Samsung Galaxy..
im thinking about following this guide since there are no options
http://www.androidrootz.com/2014/03/how-to-unrootunbrick-at-galaxy-s4-sgh.html
is this okay?

You'll have to use the ODIN file from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2674223
Flash that in ODIN, use the rootable version if you want to root it using towelroot.
Besides that, you can't flash any custom kernels on the S4 unless you're on the 4.2.2 MDL bootloader, and there's no way to get back to that from 4.4.

The recent updates are:
NJ4 -> NJ5 KitKat
OC3 -> OC4 Lollipop
So you got the KitKat update since you had NJ4.
Download the original OC3 update, install it, and then try the OTA update again to get OC4.
For reference, see this.
Took phone to Samsung at Best Buy and they flashed OC3 in phone for me for Free. AT&T store cold do nothing.
