With Knox crippling root (for now at least, hopefully something will come out later) leaving you open to carrier OTA imposed updates and pretty much not control over your phone, I wonder, is this going to hurt Samsung sales in the future? I can tell you this, last night when I became aware I could not root without tripping Knox I was not really happy. This crippled me from using Titanium Backup to restore my apps with their data and moving my ringtones to the system folder where they should be (I had problems on the Note 1 when I had them in the sd card). Now, last night I take an undesired OTA upgrade followed by all my apps updating as well. Not being able to stop the upgrade really did pissed me off, is my phone, not AT&T... I had to restore one app to the previous version and I have no idea what else needs to be rolled back...
Man, I was pissed and having got the phone on Saturday I am really considering return it but I had preorder the spigen screen protector and a new case even before buying the Note 3 and they are installed. I bet if I return it someone will come with a fix next day...:silly::silly: and I would have lost the screen protector.... If this is going to be the norm for Samsung, as much as I hate it, I will not get getting that Note 4 upgrade I was thinking on getting or any of their phones. I think there are other phone manufacturers as good (LG comes to mind)...
What do you guys think?
I HATE KNOX My Warranty Bit already 1 maybe that is silly KNOX WTF. KNOX Mess my GT-I9200 ( Snap Dragon )
Hope samsung will not put KNOX on Exynoss. Hope KNOX will Close the factory. USELESS KNOX
@ Fernandq I think you are better off with Samsung. Lg doesn't update their phones!

Let me explain in very simple words - AT&T has had locked bootloaders for some time, and that has not hurt their sales in any relevant way - you are still their customer, and while we are all *****ing and moaning about the lack of freedom people are still feeding AT&T possibly thousands of US$/year.
So it boils down not so much to "freedom" but to having actual choice and having the consumers vote with their wallet. My current Note 3 can probably last me 2-3 years from now, but when that comes close to an end I will most certainly try to not buy a Samsung + Knox phone if I have a choice! (by that time I will be hoping in something like the Ubuntu phone dual-booting Ubuntu 64 and Android 64).
Lol. Knox doesn't stop root, it only kills warranty. Why should Samsung the warranty if you've modified the device?

Knox don't prevent root in itself, I understand that but it does indirecly since it would void the warranty. If I brick my phone I do agree Samsung should not have to fix it but in the past Samsung has declined fixing hardware issues because the software in the device haw been modified even if that modification has nothing to do with the software.

All the manufacturers will do that if they find you have rooted. The only difference is that both Samsung and HTC have a reliable way of tracking it.

I would like to have an idea of the dev support the phone will get. The s4 was a let down for me development wise, so it would be great to know which devs and how many will own the device. Wanam and AndreiLux won't get the s5 The M8 already got a good support.

Yeh I hope this phone has good support, the GS2 was incredible and still being played with on the forums, I've had an i777 past few years and it had ridiculous support and still does (pry would have stuck with it for now and see what happens over the next year but I dropped it in ocean other day and rice sure as heck didn't save it lol). Have an early S4 too that wife has and it was rooted and rom'd, then all the firmware and updates happened and that's when Dev support almost died on that phone. I actually thought of getting an S4 for my upgrade instead but since it'd be from AT&T it would be on the current bang your head through a wall firmware/baseband.
I seriously hope the S5 is able to root and have rom support, and not the cluster f' the S4 is now but I doubt it considering Sammy made Knox etc even more complicated now.
Yea with Knox and all I just don't see much support, the s4 is just dead especially on the kernels side , I already preordered mine but now I'm not sure if I wanna keep it or cancel. The m8 is just a boring sexy phone (if you read the forums everyone is so scared they already put it in cases) so there's no other alternative atm

That's my problem, need a phone now as my i777 took a swim after being so careful with it for 2 1/2 years. But there's like nothing out there, I can get a refurbed S4 through AT&T for free on my upgrade but it'll have the current baseband/firmware so screwed there, I can get an M8 which is unlockable but has a crap camera (looks fine on phone, not so when you upload pics or use on desktop), or the S5 where your just perma screwed being locked and knox. There's nothing else, and can't wait as need a phone now. Sucks, so much for the days of Android being open. I'm seriously considering going back to Apple as much as I dread that as at least you can still jailbreak and not deal with all the headaches of rooting and flashing now (thats if you can), not like the i777 days where it was a breeze.

Dead? ROMs: Omega, Wanam, Echoe, Bobcat...
Kernels: KT, Adam, Faux, Alucard, Talexop...
I guess you're one more who doesn't have an idea of what Knox is, and then talks BS.

I don't think he meant dead as in "dead" you can still play around just a huge headache, i got lucky and have an early model S4 for wife, I think he meant Dev work and support/updates once they started changing firmware/baseband that made it too much of a hassle for Devs to deal with. With the S5 being even more strict and encrypted from whats said so far of updated Knox, at least with U.S. Carriers, makes me feel like there will be very little support. Some known Devs have already said their not going to bother with the S5 or at least U.S. variants

Well, there's a world outside the US.
Just don't buy the international version (or more specifically third-world international version) if you're worried about this. The S4 was relatively lucky that I single-handedly did everything from scratch kernel side, else you'd be more disappointed.
Still don't see why anybody from the S4 gen would warrant buying the S5 or M8 when they'll be bashed by the end of summer.
I wouldn't have bothered with the S5 if it wasn't for the deal I got from O2.

I also hope for great dev support. Although I have tried to learn how to build ROMS many times and still haven't got an idea how to really. I will be more than willing to help any dev.
Getting the S5 on release date hopefully!

I know what Knox is and I was talking about the exynos variant, as Wanam left for the snapdragon version then he said the next phone is htc m8. I could care less about warranty I have been using smartphones since the beginning and I have never used the warranty. So yeah, if we end up with 3 devs that's "dead support to me"
Andreilux I know that by q3 more powerful phones will be on the market but my s4 is driving me crazy with sudden battery drains and wifi wakelocks, I just wanna get rid of if. And yes I'm thankful for your work since I used it on s3 n2 and s4

I'm thinking of creating ROMs (at last!). I'm certainly buying the S5 and dev'ing for it.
The S5 won't see a massive amount of non-stock roms, and certainly less than the Snapdragon S4. But there will be some with the architecture being open source unlike Somsung's Exynos. Also, there will be a lot of roms based on stock.
To be honest, I'm probably going to be happy sticking with stock anyway as certain features will be lost as soon as Samsung's framework is taken out of the equation (fingerprint recognition being the main one).
What I would really love to see more than anything else is an exploit-based root solution that doesn't trip the knox flag. But I believe the Note 3 4.4.2 roms still haven't had that so I'm not holding my breath for the S5. I'm still deciding if I should leave my phone unrooted when I get it on Friday or just bite the bullet and trip the flag the CF Auto Root. The idea of not being able to use Viper4Android isn't one that appeals.

I agree, Touchwhiz has gotten a lot better, and I just use GoLauncher Prime and DiCikonZ icon package so I can put up with no roms, but really want to see a solution to root w/o tripping knox. I hate bloat that comes on Sammy/AT&T phones. And I want my damn Tibu back that I paid for.

Im in agreement with you on both points. I don't necessarily care about a custom ROM as much as I care about gaining root and getting rid of the bloatware. I am new to the Galaxy S world of things (my S5 arrives today!) so I am glad to know there is a potential early option although a non-preferable one that trips a no warranty flag. However as mentioned in someone elses reply I have never used a warranty option with a phone, but the one time I count on that I may be jinxing myself.
Looking forward to getting my hands on this phone today, and hopefully root not too far behind.
I'm not into Roms that's I emphasize on kernel devs, that's how you unlock the phones potential

Hi all you Verizon Note 4 owners,
I noticed there wasn't an off topic thread for you guys & gals to talk about non-Note 4 related things, so I've created this place to do just that. This will be the only place off-topic discussions are allowed.
Of course, not anything goes, stick to the rules and keep it civil. Report any questionable post(s) & don't let things get out of hand or it'll be closed.
Thanks & Enjoy!
So anyone read theres speculation that Lollipop isnt coming to the Note 4 till may. Im not too worried about it myself cause my DE is perfect, however my wife is disappointed (she has retail version) as some of her friends got it on their phones (S5, and some other brands) and she cant understand what's taking so long, after I explained things to her shes not convinced and feels lile we are being screwed. Ahh the joys life.

I miss one thing about apple, camera+ app. The best photo editing app in existence and the developer "tap tap tap" doesn't want to come to android. Just being an a$$.
Other than that apple is like a bad history for me. lol
I learned a shocking feature on iPhones the other day, if you go into the privacy settings there is a feature in there that tracks your address the time you spent there where you travel to everything you do in plain English and very easily accessible. Does android have a feature like that built in? I hope not lol not that I go any place bad it just seemed a little intrusive. I do know they have GPS and all that but that was really precise.

I don't know, but we do have a file in the system called "mobile tracker" that is, I think, used to track your phone just in case you lose it. Not sure, but I usually freeze/delete it with titanium back up. Also, if you're rooted, you can always install xprivacy module that prevents anything you suspect.
What's the longest you guys ever went without rooting your devices? I would say a month, I've just gotten my first Android phone (ZTE Warp) and the bootloader wasn't unlocked yet, I checked the forums every day until I seen the almighty *HOW TO ROOT ZTE WARP* boy was I excited. Ever since then I've never owned a android if I couldn't root it but this might be my first time, I'm looking to purchase the note 4 this April or May I only have the option of getting the att&t or Verizon variant (just my luck, lol) most likely I'll chose which ever gets rooted first. I'm sure by either April or May it should be rooted.

I had my Verizon HTC One M7 for a couple months before it was rooted, and even then you had to send your phone away and pay $25. I think a month or two after that beaups and someone else came up with a method that worked pretty well on linux and that was it. Then I had the M8 for a couple of months until there was a way but it also cost $25 and ran directly on the phone. I'm not so much concerned about root, really. I just want ****ing lollipop.

You know I wasn't so bothered at first by the lack of lollipop, in my past I was changing roms several times a week or day to get things going however thats changed now since I got my DE. What bothers me now now about the delay and the S6 and other things do I want to stay with Samsung anymore after this breaks or I want a new phone. Is it really time to say that Samsung is just isnt what it could should be?

I don't know. I have always enjoyed their product. But the delays can be frustrating. I agree. This is the one thing lacking for me. Yet I still continue to purchase their phones, because in the end they still do make the best phone. Just my opinion of course.
My wife has a retail note 4 and while she doesn't understand all the issues tied with lollipop right now she feels dumped. I dont see the big deal myself as im happy the way my phone is however for roms things have been VERY slow going... but then again im not really sure what other roms are going to bring that I cant do myself. Which I think most of us DE owners can do. I think if root was found and oprn bootloader things might be alot different but whats bothering me is Samsung's direction right now. If this is signs of the Note 5 and 6 etc. I just might go elsewhere. Some videos were released today showing the note 4 against the S6 and only slight speed differences in actual use and even camera loading. So over all for now Im happy to have a removable battery and SD card and a unlocked bootloader.
I can imagine how overloaded this section will be the minute root has been achieved, 404 errors and everything, lol. Anyway being that this is a off topic thread, I would like to say that the snow here in NY is annoying -__- .
How about the release of Sprints SM-N910P Lolipop.. Two questions who wants to see what they can do with it and see what works (of course it will lack advanced calling version X. Then comes the question will this influence Verizon to release it.

And yes root and an open bootloader would be nice. Look what happened with the S3 though. But I truly feel that the release and things like the locked bootloaders are not so much the manufacturer but the carrier. I may be wrong but I beleieve that pressure from the carrier is the main reason they do this.
What are the chances of me swapping a one month old Note 4 for a Nexus 6? Good or slim to none
Did you use a regular 2 year upgrade or edge to get the note 4?
Your best bet would be calling customer service. But even that is entirely dependent on how nice of a rep you get. If one says no politely hang up and call back. They make notes on your account when you call so don't call a bunch in 1 day. I work at an authorized retailer and most stores can't do anything after the 14 days.

Hello All..
Can you believe 2016 is here..
My Note 4 running the Rapture ROM is ( and will continue to be.. ) Heaven On Earth for me as far as, my needs in a Cellular Device are concerned..
But.. what about you? does the S7 with it's possible return to having a Micro-SD Card slot and the incredible Snapdragon 820 CPU Engine give you justification to invest another $700.00 - $800.00 into the Latest & Greatest?
Have Mid-Level devices reached a point that , they have enough horsepower to suit your needs?
For You.. Has your Galaxy Note 4 run it's course?

I'm good with my note 3 and 4 atm, note 3 on darth stalker and note 4 on kyubi rom dx heavy debloat. I used to go years in between devices before the note line became popular, now with the note 6s sure return to sdcard I'll most likely support it when it releases.

honestly yes I enjoy my note 4 and the DOK2 firmware has made my T3 feel much better than DOG did. I am planning to keep it until dev stops for it. I am starting to worry about my tablet Z though it is getting real slow after its update to 5.1.1
as far as the S7 goes no.. TBH and I cant believe I am saying this but until companies like Sammy and Sony and HTC provide updates for devices as long as that A company it will be hard for me to justify spending that much on a device.
Thankfully the devs keep many devices alive but still manufactures should in a sense stand behind there products and make people want to say YES my next device will be from X I have had great experience with them. My original T got the 5.0.1 update and it turned into a turd. That made me very concerned for the future of our phone, thankfully DOK2 which should have been here sooner did improve things for everyone on T and T3 from what I have gathered so far
No I hate android but I hate OS X more. I wish I would have taken more coding classes when I was younger so I could develop Windows Phone Apps. I LOVE the WP system and just how they designed everything.
If I didnt have a side job that required me to use Android or OS X I wold be rockin the WP.
No no no. This piece of garbage is last Samsung bloat ware I will own. Vanilla Android is the answer for me from now on. I know I know, root, de bloat and custom rom and it's great. No it isn't. Stop fooling yourselves. Samsung is as bad as Apple. Give me my pure Android please.
Yes
If there is no microSD in the next Note, which there probably won't be, then I'll be moving on to a larger screen phone. Huawei has been showing off their 6" Mate 8 which should be announced at CES in a couple of weeks, and it looks good. They seem to making an effort to try and get their products into the US, and their recent products have been well designed.

I will be going back to nexus. Got the note 4 on a whim, its a good phone for normal people. But I regret getting it. I hate how Samsung makes 8 versions of the same phone. Development it always so fragmented.

The only thing more boring than vanilla android is iOS. Like watching paint dry.

I agree with this 100%. I personally dont think it should take an act of god to flash international or unlocked firmwares/roms. I would love to turn my carrier note 4 into an unlocked and get the international update from Sammy not one that goes threw T-mobile

You see, I was once young and foolish. just kidding. To each their own I guess and you and your kind are probably why these manufacturers keep pumping bloat ware ridden phones every other month. I don't look for an operating system to excite me. Give me an OS that runs smoothly, conserves power, and is easily upgradeable, let me be in charge of excitement. I will make it exciting.
Im good on stock 5.0.1 COG2 rooted and debloated running good and no issues. Wanted to try DOK2 but seems like to many issues and root is not up to par in my opinion..Happy New Year
Yeah I plan on staying with my note 4. I like my IR blaster for 1. Also the time are cool my 128 gb sd. And basically I'm not that impressed with the new devices out there . I also see so many new cases out there to tally change the look of my device. . So all I'm getting is the gear S that's al I need .
Yep until note 6 comes out with sd card slot. If not i am going elsewhere.

I am for two reasons: 1. Lack of better options, and 2. I just got a warranty replacement this past week and being more selective about the apps I install, running a new ROM, a fresh battery and my trusty 128 GB micro SD have increased my overall opinion of the device.
It is a bit disappointing that there's still no competition for the N4 with a micro SD and removable battery (well, arguably the LG V10 I suppose) at this point, but I'm pretty happy with the refurb N4 that I just received.
The Note 5 failure was helpful to my perspective. Last month, my wife took over my Note 4 and I could have bought anything I wanted- I looked hard and long, and bought another Note 4.
I think we've hit a wall. I don't see another smartphone on the horizon worth diving into my wallet for. The only thing that will perk my interest is a screen over 6 inches on a unit with a removable battery and SD options.
Still loving my Note 4, and still nothing that entices me to upgrade. There's a rumor of a 6 inch variant of the S7. If that happens, I think the Note 6 would also be 6". That would be nice, but I'm not sure it's enough to make me want to upgrade. These phones are expensive, so an upgrade has to have substantial improvements. My Note 4 still has a long life ahead of it I think.
Right now I'm running [DOK2] TEKXodus HYBRID N4 URv5 12/03 NOTE5/EDGE/S6/N4 LOLLIPOP 5.1.1 > TEKHDway! Rom and I'm loving it. Best Rom for the Note 4 910t I would say (In My Opinion).

The S7 and S7 edge has a locked bootloader for US versions, and conceivably the same for the upcoming Note 6. S6, S6 edge, note 5 have no removable storage/batteries.
Awesome development on the Note 4 here, and if we possibly get Android N, I can't see myself leaving the Note 4 for a long time.
Btw, seems like LG G5 has an unlockable bootloader but it's not possible to load a custom recovery. Not good. Seems like preventing customization is becoming a trend with the newer US phones. Of course there's still the Nexus but the hardware is only ok IMHO
I'm actively looking for a dual OS phone, contract ends Cyber Monday so I got some time. so far the only decent one I've seen is the Meizu Pro 5 n can't remember exactly why but something about it kept me looking elsewhere lol
I'm keeping both of my note 4's until i know for sure if the N6 bootloader is locked or not. I plan to stay on the N4 and continuing making roms as long as I can and until I have to upgrade my phone due to it being too outdated.
The Note 4, the last great phone Samsung ever made.

Yeay!! Thanks for giving us hope tx.
I have no desire to switch phones anytime soon. I love my note 4. It does everything I need it to do and when the battery dies I'll get a new one and the phone will be new again.
This is the best phone ever! Its Limitless!

i have been pondering this question since first getting the note 4 . I love everything about it, but after lollipop caused touch screen issues and battery discharge, i thought i might have to go all in for something else- tried the G4 which was def a beast but it cant stand up to this powerhouse and with marsh 6.0 falling from the heavens... everything has been fixed, including the lack of response in the screen(entire top/left corner). if i have to i will buy note 4 replacements until the software starts falling short
I have a good idea. For those of us who want to stick with the N4 due to the locked bootloaders on the new devices, just put insurance on your line and keep using the N4. By the time your N4 finally dies or if you lose or break it, you can get a insurance replacement and most likely will be given a N5 or whichever device is comparable and available at the time. Most likely there won't be anymore refurbished N4's by then. The deductable is still cheaper than the 2-year new contract prices of new high-end smartphones and cheaper than paying out installments for those who do that. So it will all work out for the better if you just wait it out and see how devices & bootloaders turn out.
My wife just got a new Note 5 for a broken Note 3!

So my wife's note 4 died and our insurance gave her a note 5. She admits she is non-techie and only uses basic functions and yet she still misses the note 4 functions and hardware (custom rom, IR). Long live the Note 4 and roms from tx_dbs_tx!!
You guys are lucky my note 4 stopped working and they replaced my phone with another note 4 . It took 3 days to come to the sprint store it was refurbished too

A replaceable batter is a must! On heavy use days I have to swap out batteries by mid-afternoon. Not to mention the fact that by the end of year one your original battery doesn't last as long as it used to. I've always had to get a new battery or two before needing a new phone.

I agree with you, a few months ago I upgraded from my Note 2 to the Note 4 and other than missing the dual modem (LTE while using calls), this is the best Android phone I have had. I plan to stick with it until theres no life left as I cant stand the stock OS's (other than the ones you touch) so I cant see myself ever using a stock phone.
If they begin to lock the bootloaders everywhere, this will royally suck for Android. The best thing about Android is the freedom so I hope these asshole manufacturers and carriers listen to their customers before they are no longer customers.
The bootloaders can be unlocked with a little time and effort. However, there is only a very small number of people with the skills to to it. My advice would be to research these talented people and support their efforts in advance

I think I am either getting a developer edition of whatever phone is available at the time or move to the Nexus and use vanilla AOSP.

Interesting read, I personally didn't know the EXTSDCARD changes and sealed the battery. Dumb dumb dumb, hopefully Samsung figures out in time for my upgrade or I'm buying a Nexus.

Long story short, I updated my old note 4 from OB7 five weeks ago to marshmallow, and hated it. My replacement note 4 from Sprint had marshmallow on it, so went to 5.1.1 OG5, due to that being all I could downgrade to, and hated it as well.
After 5 weeks of being miserable, I finally made it back to OB7 via a custom rom and OB7 modem, but still on OG5 bootloader.
So, due to me not liking either 5.1.1 or 6.0.1, I will keep my note 4 until I am forced off of it, due to network changes. I will then migrate to Apple.
I didn't like the last two versions of android, so I have zero faith in Android N and being able to root a sprint note 6.

Why go to Apple? That's the worst thing you could do. You couldn't pay me to use those overpriced pieces of trash.
