[Q] 5.0 - Lack of free space - cannot install Busybox - Nexus 10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
did you notice the lack of free space on N10 after upgrading to 5.0? (I used factory images, if that makes any difference). I have 148K free after rooting on /system. That's a disaster, can't even install BusyBox (around 1 meg), not mentioning Xposed once it's available.
Any ideas how to solve this, yet keep the device accepting future OTA updates?
Thx,
Aleq

I have the exact same problem. Something that I didn't face on my n5. Also fully wiped while installing the factory image.
Btw mate, you won't be able to install xposed anyways since it's not yet compatible with the new runtime

Yes, that's why I wrote "...once it's available".
Anyway the best solution so far is to backup the Stock with CWM (or TWRP), remove the data archive (to save space) and then remove unnecessary apps from /system like Korean input method etc. When OTA comes, restore the system only and apply it. A little bit cumbersome, but I'm not aware of any better solution at this moment. Or perhaps flash system.img via fastboot before OTA.

Could you get busybox to install that way? Or it's not just a problem of space left?
178kb left tho can't be...meant, can it?
PS: sorry, my bad about xposed, I thought you meant to say install xposed once that (busybox) becomes available
PPS: what do you mean with the data archive?

I flashed factory images. Rooted with cf auto. Flashed TWRP recovery and used filemanager to manually remove apps from /system/app folder like gmail maps etc. If needed get them from play store and they will get installed in /data partition instead.

But @Aleq suggestion of making a backup of /system before starting to modify it isn't a bad one, atm you have basically no way to be able to install OTAs as they will be released @Johan1976 , not even sideloading them.

I guess I can just flash the system.img from factory images if needed in the future.

Use an app called System app remover (ROOT) found in the playstore. It has a feature which allows you to restore apps if you need them from a trash folder in your user space. I've used it successfully with KitKat and just saw in an XDA post that it works with Lollipop for this exact purpose.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jumobile.manager.systemapp&hl=en
I liked it enough to purchase the pro version just to support the developer. It even rates what is safe to remove.

You can also ship busybox into your kernel ramdisk. But I think for now the simplest remains like others said to remove unnecessary apps from /system partition
However, good news, cm12 takes only ~ 500 mb of space, will make it public when it is a bit more stable.

I'm having the same problem. All busybox apps showing 0.0 system space even after cleaning out 70mb of apps. Can't install busybox at all, tried jrummy, steiricson and busybox X. With the exception of the latter they failed. Suspicious of the legitimacy of busybox X because it said it succeeded when it didn't. I need busybox!!!

Thanks guys, I was able to install busybox after removing unnecessary system apps

Solved removing unnecessary apps with TB
I've uninstalled Korean and Japanese input apps, Cloud print app and stock Live Wallpapers using Titanium Bakchup (about 19 Mb free in System folder). Then Busybox install went OK.

I was finally able to install busybox and get init.d running, thank you.
On a side note, anyone know where lmk went? It's not in the usual /sys/module/lowmemorykiller/ location.

Undeletable file

Hello anyone,
after powering up the device for the first time and doing all the first time stuff I did the mistake of happily downloading the advertised Ice Age film (for free in Germany). Later on I tested all kinds of things. For example I created an additional user which I deleted again. Now I need the Space the *#@% Video is sitting on. But the $?#@%¿ File won't let me delete itself. Here's what I tried so far:
- deleting the file in Google Play Movies
- deleting the file with ES file explorer in /sdcard/Android/Data/com.google.android.videos/files/Movies/...
- clearing the cache of the Google Video thing in the nexus 10 settings
- clearing the cache of the Google Video thing with Titanium Backup
- deactivating the App and repeating all the abovementioned steps
- uninstalling update of Google Play Movies and repeating all the abovementioned steps
- trying to change permissions of the files with ES file explorer and others to no avail
- I even tried to rm -r the file via adb shell (with and without su) under different paths (see above and another including shell)
- and most of all: I did not only search for a solution but actually pleaded Google and the XDA search and the lot but to no avail
- By the way - I would very much prefer not to wipe the Tablet
Does any of you pros have an Idea?
Edit1: Of course I tried several different ways of changing the properties of the file (-rw-rw-r--) to 666 or something but it won't let me

Have you tried to unpin it from the Google movies app? I had a few magazines that I unpinned yesterday and it appeared to delete them afterwards. I assume the other app works the same way.

I would root the device then use a su manager that supports multi-users and grab a file manager that utilizes root. Try to delete the file then. Don't know why a file would be protected unless another app is trying to access it maybe?
That's exactly what I suspect. I've pinned - downloaded - the movie before I added and deleted the additional User. Therefore somehow the main user got to be a different one albeit it seems to be the same. And this different user isn't allowed to delete the movie. And I don't know how to restore the original 'main' user without wiping the device. If I unpin the Video in the App the App claims to delete the Video but it isn't. As a SU manager I have Chainfires SuperSU. The only other I know of is ChainsDDs Superuser Elite. And this doesn't seem to have multi user support either. Please correct me if I'm wrong or if there's more SU managers. For root utilizing file managers I have said ES file explorer, Solid Explorer and even tried Root Explorer.
Do you by any chance know of a way to restore the original main user?

The implementation of multple users is annoying and I stopped using it.
Superuser 3.3 supports multiple users for root. Might give that a shot. From Craigacgomez post:
http://d-h.st/oOo
But at this point it might just be easier for a clean install of you current Rom or at least a good excuse to try out another Rom.
Sent from my EVO using xda app-developers app
You're right of course. A fresh install is probably the best solution. Actually I'm starting to prepare for it. But it nags on me. Setting up everything from scratch (not sure whether TB will install the apps correctly with this multi-user thing) and as always forgetting something to backup and therefore loosing it.
But most of all - as long as I don't understand why this happened in the first place I don't know what will be best: Completely ignore the multi-user capabilities and hope for the best never to need it or as an initial step setting up a user and deleting it to be sure not to loose control over data owned by a 'first main user'.
Thank you for the 3.3 Superuser. I suspect I'm just too stupid but I didn't get it to run properly. In SuperSU I did a clean up for another SU manager and installed the Superuser.apk. Then tried to let it install the binaries without success. Hitting the 'Tap here to check...' just didn't do anything. It just said the binary was SuperSU 0.99. So I installed Superuser from Play and tried to get rid of SuperSU and then again installing Version 3.3 - didn't help. I even copied the binary myself which at least made Superuser see a 3.3 binary. Sadly it didn't really work with any app.
So far as a summary: If you plan to make use of the multi-user-functionality just don't do anything before setting up some users.

[Q] Lollipop, /system partition almost full

Hi all,
I updated my Nexus 7 to lollipop using the factory image (just to have a fresh start ..), but I noticed the available free space on /system partition is just a few Mb's.
After rooting (just superSu, no busybox) available space is 1.7 Mb and after editing the hosts file it is just 700 kb. I deleted the ringer tones (quite useless on a wifi only tablet) and that gave me 2.5 Mb of extra room. Any other tip to increase the /system free space ? The partition is typically read-only, but is it dangerous to be so low on free space ?
I'm afraid that could pose an issue on future upgrade, do you think google might consider re-partitioning the internal flash ?
thanks
bye
The above are reasonable questions.
Not being an expert, I wonder how much file system manipulation may be accomplished with an "in place" update.
I don't think the lack of file system headroom is a problem.
For upgrades down the road, cross that bridge when and if you get there. This device is not likely to receive another major update such as this.
I too deleted all my ringtone files save one. Also, I froze certain Google apps I'm unlikely to use. No ill effects that I can see.
With only 670 Mb of /system partition google has to decide what is in and what is out: as an example the launcher is still the old basic one because it has a smaller footprint. My Nexus 5 has googleNow launcher by default because its /system partition is 1 GB (and only 40Mb free). There will be a moment when the system files will not fit in 670 Mb and the nexus 7 will be abandoned ...
Sure the tablet is 2 years old and lollipop is very likely the last update, but I hope it will still be eligible for a 5.1 update (if any).
bye
Enrico
maybe something related with
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-4/general/how-to-fix-internal-storage-16gb-8gb-t2033692
No, that is a different issue (which I also had and fixed with a factory reset). The /system partition is 670 Mb by google design and it is filled with system files.
For Google, 3 Mb of free space is more than enough, but if you have to root and/or do other changes, that might be a problem.
bye
i deleted all the programs in system that could be installed from the play store. even launcher since i installed the Now launcher.
Freed up a lot of system space and seems to have stopped most of the system lag.
I deleted the Maps and Chrome APKs, it looks like the updated versions of those google apps went into /data anyway so it wasn't needed in /system
I deleted some gapps with titanium (chrome, documents, "edicola" i don't know english name) but at reboot I have a lot of system UI error, so I return back to 4.4.4.
How I have to use for delete unwanted system apps?
Thanks!
When it comes to perceived or measured performance, it is inconsequential for a read-only filesystem to be nearly full. And /system is designed to be mounted read only - so there are no processes trying to write things there anyway.
It only matters to folks who might want to add additional content to the /system partition - and even then only at the moment of that operation; even if they fill it to 100% capacity, that will not cause a single performance issue.
Move along folks - nothing to see here.
Performed a full clean install last night, there was some lag. I rebooted a few times left it idle for a while but no difference. I'm doing this as I want to install Phantom kernel and move to F2FS which apparently needs a little more space free. So I moved some apps out of system to data and the difference was instant and noticeable.

That is exactly my feelings, I do not care if currently I have left only few Mb AFTER rooting and other tweaks, the partition is read-only and nobody is writing there during normal operation. After the initial adjustments, the tablet is smooth and runs fine even if the partition is nearly full.
I'm worried about future upgrades (if any): if an OTA fails because there is not enough space to update the /system partition (due to customised extra files) and/or after the OTA upgrade there is no room to add the superSu app to root ... then we are in trouble.

If the current OTA update is how future OTA updates will be installed (and there's no reason to suggest it's not) then any change you make to System will cause the OTA to fail, even if you change back everything. Meaning it will fail, not because it ran out of space because of the customized files you mentioned, but because it was tinkered with even the slightest bit.
So if the OTA behavior is like the current one, then do whatever you want to System, delete stuff, fill it up to the brim, doesn't matter because come next OTA time you'll have to flash the stock system image file anyway, if you wanna keep your data, or flash the then new stock firmware entirely, like you did this time.

Actually I started with a rooted 4.4.4 and sideloaded the 5.0 OTA: it worked and the the update was applied successfully. My problem was that /system was really full to the brim, with 0 bytes left and that is way I applied the factory image. With current grouper 5.0 official image there is simply not enough space to root, install busybox and change the hosts file, we need to make some room to get all three tweak's.
I'm surprised future OTA's will not work simply because we tinkered with system files; until now I always applied new OTA's over rooted system files and they always worked (from 4.3 all the way up to 4.4.4).

Kind of conflicting statements there...
Anyway here's what I understood about Lollipop OTAs: http://www.androidpolice.com/2014/1...e-means-update-will-fail-system-modified-way/
So in conclusion I'm just gonna do whatever to system and flash stock system when next OTA comes around.

the OTA + root process left me with a /system partition full and there was no way to free space (I do not know why) so I had to restore the factory image.
The new OTA policy, as for my experience, does not apply to the our Nexus 7: the android 5.0 OTA applied to my rooted nexus7 flawlessly; if it wasn't for the rooting process filling up the /system partition, I would have kept it as it was.

i think same Problems in my moto g 5.0.2 LP stock 20mb free space in /Sys.
Someone should make a deodexed stock ROM, so there'd be more free space? I'd do it myself but my PC isn't powerful enough to run the deodex tool and my upload speed is 350kb/s so I wouldn't be able to upload it anywhere (400-500MB)
Inviato dal mio XT1032 utilizzando Tapatalk
It's all the apps that the ROM flashed into the system partition. I found myself with 1MB free. I needed that space for root apps so I installed Titanium Backup and uninstalled several apps that you can grab from the Play Store. I got to 103MB free in /system.
I wasn't sure if uninstalling the foreign language keyboards would cause problems, so I left those alone. If anyone know if they can be safely removed please let me know.
Anywho, I'll list what I removed.
Chrome
YouTube
Drive
Maps
Street View
Google+
Wallet
Play Music
Sound Search
Don't forget to reboot after uninstalling. Then install from the Play Store.

The foreign languade keyboards (as well as the ASUS keyboard) are among the things I've uninstalled to free up some space in the system partition. I've seen no ill effects. My system partition has about 65 MB free. Here's what I've uninstalled:
ASUS Keyboard
Docs
Google Hindi Input
Google Korean keyboard
Google Pinyin Input
Google Play Games
Hangouts
Sheets
Slides
Talkback
I confirm that, also, N7 3G is smoother than before with lollipop 5.0.2 with more space in system partition

[Z3][5.0.2][LB][Lollipop][stock] Steps for working Xposed video proof

First i'm not responsible whatever happens to your device.
Maybe working and other devices. never tested.
i saw a lot of people here missed their Xposed after update to Lollipop LB.
i found a way and i want to share it .
Edit: Now recovery works http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=59879026&postcount=3837 thanks to @zxz0O0 and @[NUT].
Before start make a nandroid backup via recovery and start from step 4.
Edit
video proof https://youtu.be/HKz1t8WKtQE of working Xposed
at Z3 D6603 LOCKED bootloader stock Lollipop .690
I tested 3 xposed modules
1.Greenify WORKS perfect
2.20mp superiorauto works
3.xprivacy i get bootloop and start all over again.
4. Gravity box WORKS
Edit: my Z3: prerooted .690 5.0.2 lollipop (baltic) D6603 if this helps
Now i have only Greenify module and after 50 reboots never had bootloop
maybe there are many module for 5.0.2 but never tested
What you see below is what i have done with my Z3 5.0.2 Lollipop LOCKED Bootloader
Steps for a working Xposed without bootloops at Z3 5.0.2 Lollipop
make backup via titanium backup or whatever
1. Downgrade .93 4.4.4 fresh ftf install with full wipes
2. root and install Z3-lockeddualrecovery2.8.3-RELEASE.installer
3. boot recovery, factory reset and install prerooted .690 5.0.2 lollipop zip (baltic)
4. not reboot. install xposed-arm-20150308.zip file via recovery
5. not reboot. install UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.46.zip
6. wipe dalvik/cache
7. boot system enable usb debugging, allow mock locations, disable verify apps .EDIT i don't know if that helps
8. install titanium backup
9. remove useless system apps via titanium backup (especially everything small apps even framework-small-apps) here i had force close reboot.
if not continue to 10. otherwise boot and continue to 10.
10. clean dalvik cache via titanium backup
11. reboot system
12. install clear cache app or other and clear dalvik cache (real clear). or boot recovery and clean dalvik cache
13. reboot wait art do the job
14. install XposedInstaller_3.0-alpha2.apk
15. reboot
16. install Greenify(2.6.1) module
17. reboot
18. done
Edit: if not work try install XposedInstaller_3.0-alpha2.apk before wipes and remove useless apss(step 9.). Not reboot before clean dalvik cache via titanium backup. and install Greenify(2.6.1) or Gravity box module at the end. not before.
The easy way maybe is the hard way
Greenify is supposed to work without xposed. Could you try gravity box?
Maybe ? much luck, oddly enough did that process and then I installed the apk Xposed and reset the machine gave bootloop
do you try Gravity Box ? , Greenify can work without Xposed
Bootlop
Gravity box WORKS
did you try with downgrade and full wipes ?
and try install xposed apk before wipes and remove useless apss(step 9.)
remove useless system apps via titanium backup (especially everything small apps even framework-small-apps) how many small apps you find and unistall it ?
some days before i tried with different steps and not worked.
and what about 20MP SuperiorAuto module ?? is it working ??

[share] "remove gapps completely"

[FLASHABLE ZIP]
The zip provided below can be used to remove whole gapps package that is included in some custom Roms ,so that u can flash u r own desired gapps again [switch gapps] or if u want to use custom Roms without gapps.
Remove GApps in ROM: now support Marshmallow
Script in first post very discounted and therefore deleting not all files.
Here's updated version. Script automatically mounts /system, you don't need do it by yourself.
Script compatible with Android 2.3...6.0
Guaranteed delete will be only on CyanogenMod rom's and Nexus firmware due of possible other file naming in manufacturer stock firmware.
Probably some small bits of files can left on device (like WebView), but almost all other will be removed.
Note: script removes apps from /system partition.
Probably some of them was updated and additionally stored in internal memory.
So you need manually delete a bit of remainders by usual way.
IMPORTANT!
– Maybe some stuff or whole ROM will broken after applying this ZIP
– Script removes stock Google / CM keyboard, install 3rd party before applying!
– Script removes Google Experience Launcher, so make sure you use 3rd-party app or device will not boot!
– Script removes Hangouts, so make sure you use 3rd-party SMS app or you may unable use SMS!
– ..and may other
– Apps with embedded Google Maps such as Foursquare, Instagram and many other can't be launched / installed by any way because of lack of framework for it
– A lot of apps requests installed Google Play Store and Google Play Services which will be removed
– Network location can be disabled because it's part of gapps
– Recommended to wipe dalvik/ART-cache to rid out of unused cache files

Lol,its possible only if rom boots

I try to delete bloat system apps but they keep coming back

I installed this rom:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/axon-7/development/rom-slm-version-t3704143
(I wanted an android 7 stock rom - not MIFavor - but incredibly I couldn't find it)
after that, I tried to remove with Titanium Backup many system apps that I didn't want, like Mi Assistant, Es file explorer, Z-backup, an app with russian characters which I have no idea what it does, an app with chinese characters which I have no idea what it does, etc.), but the problem is that they keep coming back even after removing them with Titanium Backup :| this has never happened to me before, and I have no idea how to solve this.
Try this zip. Backup before flash.

thanks for the suggestion, but it didn't work: first I tried with this method, then I installed the zip you provided, but again it didn't work.
As before, if I uninstall system apps via Titanium Backup, and then reboot the device, the apps are still there.

In TWRP's terminal do
Code:
reboot disemmcwp
If that doesn't work do it from your computer with
Code:
adb reboot disemmcwp
I tried exactly as you said, but again it didn't work. I unistalled apps with titanium backup, they disappear, then I reboot and the apps are again there :'(
Apart from that the phone works perfectly (the root remains, xposed works, etc.) so I have no idea why this is happening
Oh I have a a2017g and I dont' have Magisk, if that changes anything.
just a quick update, I have already installed busybox 1.21.1, and if i try to update it to 1.27.2 with busybox app from play store, nothing happens/changes.
edit2: I even try to install the "dm-verity and forced encryption disabler zip" listed here, but again it didn't work.

Try Magisk. AFAIK with Magisk you can make changes to system without actually modifying system, so it might work.

Could you explain this? You were looking for LineageOS maybe?
To be able to delete apps you should get a computer with ADB, connect your phone, then from the computer issue "adb reboot disemmcwp". Doing this from TWRP or a terminal emulator doesn't work

Don't use Titanium to remove the apps.if you have run the above command to disable write protection, download mxplorer or any root explorer and go into the folder and delete them. For some reason Titanium doesn't delete them properly
I was having the same problem with with all the b13 roms. The b13 bootstack it the problem for me. What phone model are you using? If you are on the U model trying installing the b32 bootstack by drakenfx. That's how I solved that problem. I am not sure on the g model though.
thanks again for your help! in the end since I couldn't figure it out, I decided to factory reset everything and start from scratch with Magisk and LineageOS. With them I succesfully managed to delete system apps with titanium backup. now i have only a small issue with adblocker, but i will create a new topic as the problem is different from the one i talked about here.

yeah I wasn't really clear. I was looking for an android vanilla experience, and then add gravity box to personalize it. however i am quite happy with lineageos, so i just may stick with it. only issue is that i couldn't find dark theme for drawer/settings, but i will look into it.

i think you're using the stock system, a.k.a. MiFavor. LineageOS is the vanilla android experience you wanted, that's why I mentioned it.
I'm attaching a few screenshots
