Rooting without tripping Knox? - Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I am stuck, I have google authenticator which I can not move from rooted note2 to the note4 (unrooted)
The only concern is voiding warranty, as with the note2 I could simply reflash an official samsung ROM.
My question is, should I wait a few weeks to see what the geniuses here can do? I saw another device was able to get rooted without tripping knox, is this plausible for this to occur on Note 4?
Thanks in advance

geohots root towelroot - This was a root for Note3 that doesnt trip Knox, I hope this dev is on a note 4...

Don't hold your breath waiting for an workaround.
An efuse gets tripped when rooting that sets off knox and its impossible to reverse.
I don't think the note 3 was dealing with an efuse.

I have to second this^
I think we will be waiting a long while. Maybe a BIG bounty for the Dev who cracks this will help but yes if E-fuse gets tripped then there is no going back so very curious what work-a-round will come... If any. I personally don't care if knox tripped.. Not always but often.. If phone under warranty and the hardware defect was NOT caused by rooring/tweaking.. Sammy will fix or replace anyways.. At least in GTA location.
For me, bottom line- I want FULL control of my phone and to have it setup and functioning the way I want so Root is a non question.. Warranty goes, then so be it. Sucks but is the way it is now.. Damn manufacturers

In the meantime, I am trying to maintain a thread about non-root solutions. Check it out!

@DEVS: ROOT vs UNKNOX (wait for new bootloader expolit or wait for knox 0x0 reset)

Hello!
I would like to hear yours and our DEVS opinion on the subject.
There are lot of ppl got MJ7 or later with OTA or even bought phones with MJ7 or later already.
So, what do you think - which is most likely to happen:
a) DEVS will find new exploit so we can have root with >=MJ7 with knox 0x0?
b) DEVS will find a way to reset all counters including knox to 0x0 so we can UNROOT and UNKNOX (new term (c) me :silly before warranty repair?

Unknox has been used since they started working with KNOX and trying to zero it.
Of course we're waiting for both, I have rooted my phone since I have a perfect device. If I ever need to replace something I'll do it myself (mostly hardware since there are a lot of replacement units out there). What will happen first is developers will get a way to not trigger the KNOX counter before finding a way to zero it.
Interested as well.

Rooting Note 3 Advice

Hi,
I just recieved my Note 3 this morning , but have a few questions about rooting on it...
Not sure what information is required, but my phone is on Android 4.3 and its a SM-N9005.
I don't really have any plans about installing custom roms as such, but I do want it to be rooted and I want to stick to official samsung firmware. (At least for now, it may change in the long term future). I'm wanting to update to KitKat too (When its available in the UK anyway, doesn't seem to be out here yet anyway)
I'm pretty scared about this Knox flag I'm hearing about too... Not so sure about it, but I hear its essentially makes your warranty void, which I don't want this early in.
Anyone have any advice for me based on this?
Thanks

Ah thanks for that. Was reading up on it but couldn't see something as detailed as this.
I'm guessing its saying I can't root without tripping the Knox yet... which is a bummer...
My Baseband ends in MJ7
My build number ends in MK2
Does this mean I can't root at all without tripping the knox yet?
If so is there any sort of...development in this area?

No and no.
If you are worried about knox, then don't root, yet.
But as far as I know, under European laws, Samsung cannot refute warranty even if your knox is tripped.
Read around. Or ask other people from Europe about this. @radicalisto

Fraid not, only way you can root is by tripping KNOX. Now the way Europe handles KNOX warranty is a massive grey area, if you encounter Hardware issues it'll probably get fixed, but don't take that as solid.
My advice, stick with stock for 2-4 weeks, see if you have any HW issues, if not go ahead and trip it only if you want root and/or custom ROMs.
Do a ton of reading in the couple of weeks while you're waiting and look at the issues and risks

[Q] What happen after knox trigger

I have been searching for this answer for sometime.
Not sure where else I can look for, but I really want to know what happen (besides warranty issue) after knox trigger.
Is there anything that will happen to the phone beside the 0x0 and 0x1?
Can I still use VPN?
Can I still encrypt my sdcard and internal storage?
Basically, I need to know what is the difference between a triggered Note 3 and a non triggered Note 3.
Sorry if there is another post on this out there cause I really can't find it.
Thank you all in advance.

im not an expert but as far as i know you wont get ota updates or be able to use knox
i recently trigged knox and truth be told ... im having way too much fun with my note 3 n9005 and its getting way better ....
u can do more things if u installed a custom recovery and a kernel ... just read more threads about note 3 kernels and what they can do
note : flashing custom recovery or kernel will trip knox

I still own a S2 and I used to heavily mod it. I understand the feeling of rooting and not able to root.
I just want to know what is the difference between triggered and non triggered Note 3.
I am not sure why everyone is so worried about the warranty and how to fix the triggered flag.
I actually don't give a beep about the warranty and how to fix the flag.
As long as it doesn't affect the STOCK ANDROID functions (eg. VPN, sdcard encryption, internal storage encryption), I will be pretty fine with it.
The problem is, I am not able to find detailed explanation on what will happen to the phone after knox triggered.
Only affect is that you won't be able to use knox container anymore. Knox is a seperate enviroment to run your knox enabled apps. You still be able to get F/OTA updates and it DOES NOT void your device warranty.
NOTHING!! Despite Samdungs insistence that your warranty is void, your phone will be liberated!!
To me, this is a **** up by Samdung by alienating a large number of customers who, like myself, will NOT be buying another samsung after being a loyal customer for years!!
All manufacturers seem to be throwing some kind of spanner in the works for us who enjoy using our phones to their full potential.
Thank you guys so much for explaining.

To root or to not root your Note 4!

Hi All,
I have been a samsung user for a long time and use to flash f*** it all the time and root the phone.
I need root to remove all unused bloatwate.
Since there is no way knox warranty bit can be reset upon root, i was wondering whether note 4 can be rooted without tripping the knox warranty.
Also, will the warranty be void if the knox bit is tripped? Cant we get it serviced even for a hardware issue? Although i have never faced any hardware issues within an year.
Thanks in advance.
Hi lycan_codex, based from what I've read the knox bit is hardware connected so once tripped it can't be reversed unless you replace the chip itself.
I would have also wanted to root my new Note 4 but it carries with it a 2 year warranty.
If yo
u want to delete bloatware you have to be rooted or wait for a rom that does not have the bloat. Yes root will be needed. If your phone malfunctions and you tripped KNOX you can still get it repaired just make sure you unroot flash a stock firmware before getting it repaired. Or you can hope someone makes a no KNOX trip which last I heard Towelroot did not last to long
Thankfully with canadian phones you can disable 90% of the apps

since about 90% of bloat can be desactived....personally I"m gonna wait to see if there's a root without tripping knox who could go out soon....on the note 3 guy where able to root without tripping knox...so
To puss or not puss.... just root it.
Have been rooting every Samsung from galaxy s1 to s4 then note 3 to note 4. Cannot live without a rooted phone. From restoring my apps data with titanium, navbar customisations, root just makes it so much easier to use the handset. Have never ran into any problems like phone breaking down due to root so for me root is essential.
Seems you plan to do serious damage with your rooted phone that you need to keep knox intact but you say you've been flashing awhile so what are you really afraid of
I've been also rooting my samsung phone since s2, s3 and s4 but its been only in s4 where i had problem with the knox bit. Now I'm not sure if i still want to root my note 4 since its already butter smooth. Unlike my s3 and s4
I was a bit afraid of rooting the phone and the samsung service center guys refusing to service the phone as the knox warranty is tripped.
Anyways, F*** it, i just rooted my phone. Thanks for your inputs anyways.
samsung service center returned my note3 once they found out it had been rooted and tripped knox so i smashed the screen on and claimed on my house insurance
Im going to wait a bit longer before i root , its a bit early yet for custom roms

Congrats and relax!
I recommend getting 'abp' ad block since you're now rooted. It will block all anoying ads from aps and browsers. Also the blocked ads make chrome run even faster. SDMAID is a must also.
No risk No Reward [emoji3]
The manual states if you change anything eg root there is no warranty.

LOL I had to do that first but you should have returned to stock firmware before taking it in but it seems you turned lemons into lemonade. Depending on your carrier roms will be up in no time

Welcome to the darkside I m sure you ll enjoy your phone now that your bloatware is gone.
And roms are becoming available at a fast pace now
I'm planning on upgrading, but I was told the Note 4 *isn't* rootable or flashable, only the dev version is? (Verizon version)
I always root my phone since i joined xda with Galaxy S1, S3, Note 2, and now Note 4. But now on 5.1.1 Note 4, I'm satisfied with the phone's performance without root. Rooting my Note 4 on 5.1.1 breaks the Screen Mirroring functionality. I'm always using Screen Mirroring to my Samsung TV. At present I can't be satisfied without it.

Have you tried adding wlan.wfd.hdcp=disable to your build.prop? It should get Screen Mirroring working with root.

Can you tell me how you rooted it? What firmware version are you running?
Thanks
definitely root it if you don't care for your warranty, i rooted my F 5.1.1, with stock rootable kernel, and i didnt even disable everything i can, and i'm getting literally 2 days of batery, with 4h screen on time, i know it's not much, but my not rooted one lasted only 2-2:30.. Cheerz
1. Is the Note 4 still rootable if it's on the latest Lollipop?
2. What if it's a Tmobile phone?
3. What if it's a Verizon phone?

[Q] Root without tripping Knox?

Is still CFAutoRoot still the only way to root our devices? Note 3 and S5 could root with TowelRoot and not void their warranty, we still cant Are any of the devs working on a workaround for this?

Currently CFAutoRoot is the only way to root your Note 4 at the moment, so this means you will lose your warranty if you rooted your Note 4. However many people are saying that tripping KNOX doesn't mean Samsung will not fix your phone if you have a hardware issue unless they can proof that the hardware issue is caused by the software you installed or rooting it.
I think developers are currently working on it, but I guess you just need to be patient. Hope I solved your question.
There is no workaround for knox.
Knox is a physical fuse (that meets DoD security standards), if you tamper with the secure knox box or root your device the fuse blows.
Therefore, by rooting your device you have physically damaged your phone and your warranty is void.
Here in the UK, we are under the false impression that by rooting we have not physically damaged the device, but in fact we have. Thus, if Samsung so chooses not to repair devices under warranty, we have no recourse.

You didn't do any physical change. Samsung did, nobody else.
I guess we need to be patient; developers will concentrate on Lollipop - doesn't make much sense breaking your brains for rooting a firmware which will be more or less obsolete in a just few days.

I guess you are right, i mean i thought that Lollipop would be out like a month ago, probably devs too, but i hope they start working on a workaround as soon lollipop is out, and that should be any day now, even official lollipop user manual is up on samsungs web
