Disabled Facebook Messenger, can still chat in FB app - Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I thought Messenger was mandatory but I can still chat through the FB app. Is this a custom app from Samsung or was I just out of the loop and used Messenger to drain my battery for no reason?

Interesting, I have no updates from Play Store requesting me to update Facebook... I guess I may be using the latest version? I do recall on my HTC device that it automatically opens Messenger. Currently have it disabled though - I feel it drains too much battery (does not even get tracked on power usage).

Thanks to this thread, I decided to see if my disabling the Messenger app - if I'd be able to do messages from within the Facebook app, which I had updated just a couple of days ago to the latest version - and it worked! =)

Guess Yes, my one is 3.5, currently ver = 21.0.0.4.12
you can remove your current fb and messenger
and then re-install the ver 3.5, and also disable auto update in play store =)

Does messenger drain the battery too much? I rarely use it anyway. Also when you disable it, do you still get notification for a message?
Overall I do like the floaty heads thing and would keep it if it doesn't really drain the battery.

When you disable messenger, no chat heads at all.
It does not drain battery when rarely in use however a lot of my friends text me with it and it becomes bothersome lol

But who said it takes more battery than the regular Facebook app? The regular app also receives push notifications, so I don't understand why you think messenger consumes more battery.

Let's assume both receive notifications, double the notifications, double the listeners for an app that is redundant to another.

Maybe you are right. But its also possible that they designed both apps not to listen simultaneously. That would also prevent double notifications.

Facebook app update

Just downloaded update and seems lot closer now to look like the iPhone one. I don't use Facebook app much so anybody notice any major differences since last one?
yep.. it auto updated this morning for me.. and its much nicer feel to it.. also like the little photo slider at the bottom.
wish they would implement facebook chat though
Much better, only thing I miss is to see who liked smth, option to slide to next picture when viewing pictures(it is so stupid to me to touch next and previous button) and chat

FB chat through the AIM client seems to work fine for me. But yes, it would be nice if we didn't have to run another app alongside the proper FB one.
Has anyone tried syncing contacts through Facebook rather than Facebook for HTC Sense? Since this update I have two Facebook accounts in the Accounts and Sync settings. If I try to use the new one it doesn't seem to work. It offers a new contact link but doesn't have pictures or anything attached to it.

while we wait for them to put chat on the app in the mean time download go chat the ui is good it looks like google talk
I can't believe items in the notification menu still take you to the mobile version of the site in your browser and don't stay within the app.
Apart from that, I like it.
Partial Wake usage withe the new 1.3 client
Check the "Partial Wake Usage" (*#*#4636#*#*): with Facebook client 1.3, no contact sync and autoupdate on "never" i have 100% usage (on facebook app)
A definite improvement... wish they'd change the horrible icon though.

Yep, I've just uninstalled the update.
Would this be because of the 'new notification implementation'? I did, for the first time ever, actually receive a notification whilst I had it installed!
It's using way to much of the cpu, too bad since I really liked the update but I need to uninstall it aswell Battery is more important!
Do people think a fix will come out for this? Surely this is an error, it uses way too much battery!

It has to be some sort of unforeseen thing. I would hope to see an update to fix this soon.
Mind you, I'm not overly impressed with the new features- was expected something far bigger and better.
I just wished, they can have a widget like the one on iphone where it displays the notifications on a corner.

Thank god I now know why my phone as gone from 100% to 0% in the space of 6 hrs.
Thought it was the Froyo update but can see now it looks like it's this new update.
Has anybody emailed them yet to inform them of the excessive battery increase?
Yes I have already mailed the developer

is there any fix for the battery-usage-of-death issue ?

Facebook update, no push notifications?

Facebook update 1.5 just rolled out, and added chat and push notifcations. However, mine do not seem to be working.
If I heard correctly, froyo isn't supported, since its only 2.2+ that has cloud APK support. Not 100% sure though.
I am currently running CM6.1 on my Dinc, which is based on 2.2.1, so I'm wondering why this isn't working.

1. not working.
2. If its REAL PUSH, why do we see Time Interval settings ?

Other people have said that it is working for things like comments and messages, and I've even seen a few people with push working on evo and inc, so I'm confused why it seems so hit or miss with people's updates.
EDIT: Ok, yeah, push is working for chat. Hrumph. If that's all they added, this is pretty stupid.

Well, then it's looking like maybe its a CM6.1 specific thing, huh.. lame. :/
My Dinc, stock 2.2, is receiving some things via instant push and other things at the interval update. It's stupid because if it would just push everything, I could turn the email updates off but I can't figure out what is consistently pushing yet.

Nope. I'm running Redemptive Rev. 2.1.3 and all i'm getting for push noti's is chat. And one message, but ive had MANY facebook notifications since updating, and none of them have pushed to my phone. The dev's for FB for android need to redo that entire app, imo. Compared to iphone's fb app, its a joke.

I was getting notifications for everything: comments, messages, wall posts, chat, etc...that is until I rooted.
Same. On Cyan nightly 184. I'll get no notifications pushed, sign on via pc, and see 3 IM comversations. Irritating.
No notifications here either. It seems like chat rapes my battery too.
Facebook is wrecking my battery. There was no issue before I actually launched the application, but ever since, it's been keeping my phone awake.
My phone's been unplugged for 6 hours, running 36.1% of that, with the screen on for 6.4% of that. That's about 2 hours awake, and almost a half hour of screen time. According to spare parts, facebook has kept the phjone awake like 6 times as long as the next offender, Android system. The rest of the apps on the list are little slivers.
This is with Facebook Notifications turned off in settings, and I'm like 75% sure I had signed out of chat.
I hadn't changed the default number of backups in Titanium, so I only have one backup of Facebook, which is from like the day after the update came out. Can I just uninstall it? Or will **** hit the fan?
Actually anybody know where I can find an APK for the last update of facebook? That worked fine. If I uninstall updates and then install that APK over the version that came on my phone it should be fine. I froze it for now in Titanium.
EDIT: I was able to downgrade back to facebook 1.4. Go either the Market or Application Settings, go to facebook, and uninstall the updates. Then install this over the version taht came with your phone: http://www.freewarelovers.com/android/download/temp/1288808520_Facebook_for_Android_1.4.0.apk
I've been having the same problem. some days my battery is fine and other time Facebook suck it dry. if I'm signed out of chat too.. i dont get it

[Q] Does the Facebook App Drain Your Battery?

I've been getting great battery life but then recently noticed that I hit 50% by lunch (when usually, I hit 50% by 10-11pm, after unplugging in the morning like everyone else).
Then, I noticed that FB was showing me notifications after installing it a few days ago. I tried to find a way to disable notifications in FB, but there is no such option, so is it basically running all the time in the background? Makes ya wonder what Zuckerberg is tracking in the background?
I'm uninstalling FB tonight and see if I can get back the awesome 1.5-2 day battery life I'm used to.
It does drain battery terribly but I don't think its because of notifications. I think the chat refusing to close is causing a partial wake issue. Download spare parts and Facebook is always running. Probably best to just use the site.
I never have any problems with the facebook app. You can disable notifications in the settings.
I cant really speak to the chat problem. I have been signed out of chat since that feature was added.
So if you are having issues, try disabling notifications and signing out of chat. See if that makes any difference.

Cool, I'll put FB back on after a few days and try those suggestions. I wanna make sure that it was the culprit in my poor battery life.
I just left a comment for them about this in the Market. I'm also going to install it back again and uninstall it from the Market and mark it as Defective, so they get a second hint.

It's for sure the chat....just make sure you stay signed out of it and you wont have the drain issues.
I dropped the FB sync settings down to once or twice a day and that was a huge help on battery life. I don't use the widget, so instant status updates have no value to me and this allows the profile pics to stay relatively up to date.
I noticed the widget causing the most battery drain.
I think i will stick to the site.
New version of the Facebook app just came out. Version 1.5.1 if i recall. Might help those of you having battery drain issues.

Uninstalling Facebook app saves up to 20% of Android battery life

This is more of a just letting people know just kind of post. I, personally, uninstalled Facebook from my devices in 2012, and haven't been happier. but, many people still use the Facebook app. and for those that use it, here is some info about it that many of us already know, but many others do not http://www.theguardian.com/technolo...ok-app-saves-up-to-20-of-android-battery-life

That sounds a little strange, since chrome mobile allows FB notifications. Regardless, maybe allowing FB notifications in chrome is at least a possible temporary work-around.

They could possibly not be using the chrome api, and instead using a simple webview. If they were to bring chrome to their app for their webview then it would work.

57% battery, have been opened the facebook app a few times... 2% drain from facebook.
If you haven't had the facebook app on your phone since 2012.... You may not be the right person to comment on it?

I had Facebook on my both my nexii at the time, tablet and phone. on my tablet, it was never ever opened. on my phone, it used between 15-25% most he time, with very little use. on my tablet, for months it used 15-40% battery, again never ever opened nor set up. and I have family and friends that have Facebook installed, people who refuse to remove it. so I see how Facebook goes, first hand. I'm more than happy using their website.

Agree. My most rececent charge lasted 36 hours to get down to 5%.
- 3:45 SOT
- 2:19 calls
- Facebook only used 5% over that period. Held the phone awake for a total of 9 seconds.

notifications are a big part of it, but even just having it installed has made my devices run like a gimped weasel....it's a severe resource hog, and removing the app immediately clears things up. There is no way to deny it's the root of the problem when you see this happen on device after device, over the course of 5 years as an android user....sorry, but you are never going to convince me the app isn't the ultimate source of many many issues on peoples' devices.
Try metal for Facebook

You are very right. FB and Messenger are both on the top of the worst coded android apps and it is well known that they drain battery like mad. Lucky for me other then my kids no one I know even uses FB anymore.
Always has been a bad battery drainer. No idea why but one would think they would have had it rewritten by now. I despise FB and been far happier since leaving them anyway.
Hm... Removing Facebook app saves 20% of Android battery life but the REAL battery saver to do is delete facebook all together & get back 90% of your life. Think how much battery you'll save not staring at your phone for 6+hrs.
I don't have battery issues with the Facebook app, but I stopped its background sync, and I also don't have messenger installed. In general, social media apps are the worst battery abusers as they typically sync in the background a lot by default.
Sent from my DROID Turbo 2
It looks to be true. I uninstalled the Facebook app and from the day 1 my SOT has exceeded 5 hours on daily bases. Before, with the FB app installed I would usually get something like 3 to 3 and a half hours of SOT.
Now I just use FB on Chrome and it looks good.
Oh and yeah, the N6 rooks
If you look at a logcat with FB installed it will show you the drain. It is one of the worst coded apps available
