Oily Screen - Xperia Z3 Compact General

Anyone else noticing that the Z3C is super hard to clean? The screen seems resistive to cotton cloths more than previous phones I've used. Know of a better way to extract all the oil from the screen?

Using a screen protector doesn't help remove oil off the screen, it only helps prohibit it.

I found this to be very annoying with my z1 compact, so when I got my z3 compact from clove I thought I would give Crystalusion a go.
I can't be happier with this decision. It goes on easy, I put it on and left it overnight, didn't touch the phone until 12 hrs later.
The phone feels insane, like the smoothest surface I have ever felt! Finger prints and oil are reduced by what I would say to be 90% and what little marks do remain, they come off with just a quick and light wipe over.
I have now ordered 3 double packs to coat all the phone screens that my family own and save the remainder for future applications on my z3 compact.
One cloth of crystalusion is good to cover the front and back of the z3 compact, plus the screen of a tablet or another 2 phone screens.
3 weeks so far and also no micro scratches that plagued my z1 compact.

I would love to hear from you if the phone is more slippery then before you applied the Crystalusion? The Z3 is slippery as it is and i would not want to make it even more slippery.

I use 3M microfibre cloth (High performance cloth) and a little diluted dish washing liquid (10:1 mix of water to dish washing liquid).
The key is to spray a little on one corner of the cloth, wipe the screen with the wet portion, then follow through with a dry side of the cloth to clean up.
Same formulation and parts I use for cameras lens and general LCD cleaning.

I findone very easy to clean, easier than my iPhone, however much more slippy also

@ OP I find it strange. I am much happier with this screen compared to my XC1. The anti shatter film on that really irritated me and am much happier without it. I find this one stays clean by itself the whole time.
I find a lot of threads here unnecessarily negative about this phone. Best I have ever owned.

I would say that it feels more sleek, clean, stealth and sexy.
Slippery with phones is just a figment of people's imagination!
Phones are designed to be grasped on the outer edge, drawing the inner edge into the palm. The edges of the z3 are rubber with (compared to the screen) a very slight texture, you'll only do the phone (and any phone) if you're just careless!
Around the home I keep my z3 compact naked, it's just too awesome not to.
When I go out, there is greater risk in being out in a harsher environment so I slip on my clear Ringke fusion case so I can place my phone on the desk at work, the dashboard of the car etc but am rest assured that I have the extra protection for the numerous times and ways that I use the phone when I'm out.
By the way, my wife just got an iPhone 6, which I was considering however I am super glad I got the z3 compact. It's nicer and better in every way.
The best phone I've ever seen or used! Any issues that plagued the z1 contact are gone and improved in every way ☺

Thanks for the replies, I'll have to take a look into some of these solutions.

ZAGG's invisibleSHIELD + X10 + review

Hi!
I got my hands on ZAGG's invisibleSHIELD for X10, it's on the way thru delivery.
I saw their videos, and it's seem hype.
Anyone have personal experience with this product?
Also, right now, I have a rubber-not-so-tight-fit casing for the X10, but I want to get one that has tight-fit, real tight fit rubber casing to put on after the invisible shield? Recommendations?
Something in the lines that matches with iSkin, that the have for the "not so hype" iPhone...
If you go up a level to the Sony Xperia X10 menu page and have a look in the accessories subsection there is a lot of info on cases and screen protectors etc which might be helpful to you.
I bought Zagg's full body invisible shield before for my SE Satio. They were difficult to apply. Also, the screen responsivenss was better on the stock screen protector. You dont really need to replace it if yours came with one. The Zagg screen protector feels sticky to the touch. Not so good on a capacitive screen
Zagg's invisibleshield is horrible. My buddy got one for his x10, and I applied it. Every piece was not cut precise except the back cover. The front screen protector wasn't even cut straight. The left and right borders were tapered in the middle leaving about 2mm of space, on each side, between the border and the screen protector.
From my own experience with the product on my x1, the full body shield turns yellow and traps tons of dirt at the edges. It just looks cheap over time.
Backcover? People actually _like_ having slippery backs? Imo the stock coating is optimal since it's very grippable, it's rugged and it doesn't gather any fingerprints.

Well, I was just stating a fact that it does come with a back shield, and it's the best cut piece of the set. While I do like the bare back feel of the x10, the option is there for people to use it or not use it.
I got myself a Martin Fields screen protector. Applied it today. So far really loving it. Will review it soon.
InvisibleSHIELD is also supposed to be real good, but a pain to apply correctly.

I had the same experience with my Zagg sheild. Tappered sides and what not. Anyway I am not a fan. What I would like to know is if there is similiar screen shields to the ones for the iphone?? They have almost the texture of a sheet of paper, never streak and seem to provide excellent responsiveness. Im not sure of the different types of protectors but if someone knows of one like this let me know!
Also the Zagg shield on the back of the X10 is actually pretty sweet......its not slippery. In fact its the exact opposite. You can set the thing down on the dash of the car while charging and it will not slide around at all. But hey, if thats worth $20 then have at it.
Not bad...
I have the invisibleSHIELD for my X10 and it's not to shab... but not too good...
As with one of the posts above, the front screen protector was not cut to fit properly; there is a gap on my screen about 1/4" on the right side, however the left side is flush. I emailed Zagg about it and they have sent me a new one and apologized that the case was damaged during shipping (although it was very clearly NOT damaged during shipping, it was just cut that way).
The rest of the case fits snug, but it does get dirty/sticky on the edges. I will be getting another case to put over it; likely the FlexiShield.
I personally like the feel of the screen protector more than the stock protector. I have both of them on right now and have no issues with the touchscreen whatsoever. The Zagg shield never fingerprints, but it would with the stock protector.
Overall, I would give the invisibleSHIELD a 7 out of 10. If I was rating the screen protector alone I would give it 8 out of 10 (points dinged for the improper fit, hopefully the replacement sits flush).
If you are like me and want a mint looking phone you might get a little frustrated by the scummy edges, however the material is strong and you will definitely not scratch anything. I recommend doing away with the full body case and just getting the screen cover in combination with another case!
Cheers!
Update: Received the replacement but the screen protector is even more tapered on the edges than my original. I've scrapped the shield and went with a plastic fitted case. Too bad, I really like the quality of the material. I'm going to try and get a refund.
Wow! Judging by the reviews, I am not glad that I went for MF instead of ZAGG.
I got protech which is essentially the same thing and I have to say its pretty good. I've used invisible sheiks in the past on a g1 and found it was easier to apply to the x10. You have to be really patient though if you leave the smallest air bubble on the edge as previously mentioned dirt and dust gets trapped underneath and starts to peel.

I have full body Zagg ... it sux.
The size of the front part is not right so i have about 2mm on edges which are not covered.
The top, bottom and side parts are already gone.
The back part is still there ... for now.
I have a gadget shieldz full body.
I'll try it in about 2 weeks when the zagg will be gone.
Zagg lasted about 3 months.
I have the Martin Fields one bought from Mobile Fun. It is the biggest fingerprint magnet in the history of phones. I bought the double pack thinking I'd have a spare as back up. The actual screen applies beautifully but it has lifted in the top right hand corner near the proximity sensor. I managed to reapply it without taking it off totally but its still not perfect.
I want the same shield we bought for hubby's Iphone. Its a matt anti reflective one and shows no finger marks. I spend my life cleaning smudgy prints off mine.
To clear out what others said and my experience with zagg shield,
It all comes to how accurate are you when attaching it.
But if you want some advice, just put the back part only. The stock screen protector is much better, the side parts are too hard to put on.
and take care They are very stretchable. ..
Sent from my X10i using XDA App
I agree, the Zagg screen protector makes the screen slightly sticky or something. Makes it hard to drag things across the screen like when moving cards in Solitaire etc. I'm on the lookout for a good screen protector now, wish i never removed the stock one!
I actually like the feel and look of the back protector and yes, the side and bottom protectors are a bit too finicky and strechy for clumsy people like me to put on properly!
Painfull Installation - Happy Though!
Hey!
So, I finally had time over the weekend to apply the invisibleShield to my X10, the full-body, "maximum protection" version.
Just let me tell you:
(1) Painfull process - took nearly 2 hours from start to finish, minus break / re-doing time because i wasn't completely satisfied.
(2) Not enough solution - the spray bottle they gave is enough for 1 time installation only! No room for mistakes. Found out the solution was Johnson's brand baby shampoo & distilled water (I didn't have any distilled water, instead, used a new bottle water from Nestle brand) ... worked like a charm
(3) sizing - oh man! the sizing of the invisible shield is not perfect, except for the back piece ... front has gaps, 1/2mm or less on either side.
(4) Applying ... it took me about 3 times to get it right, fitted accordingly. That's how I ran out of the solutions.
(5) Squeeze is not good on small pieces, better to use a q-tip to slide thru the solutions off.
Overrall, it's a different feeling. Getting used to it.
Only thing I would ask ZAGG to do is: PROVIDE A BOTTLE WATER size of solution!!!! & correct sizing of the pieces.
- Just 1 or 2 mini bubbles seen just by me, otherwise, it's a charm!
Still, I got my hands on a iPhone 4 32GB as well, kit for that is coming soon. Should be easier ...
I wish they had Otter Box style casing for X10.

Clarity is ok.
Fingerprints ... way better than the original but still not good enough ...
Just don't drop sun protection lotion on your phone
You will need another invisible shield ...
Fingerprint is not there, or atleast, very much of it is reduced. I am a clean freak, so, I clean it everyday before putting it to charge for the night.
Senstivity was something to get used to, little bit off in the beginning, but after the curing process of the invisibleshield, it works like a charm.
Anyways, I contacted ZAGG, they are sending me another full kit for the X10, since I complained about the sizing & not enough solutions ...
I have to wait for approx 1.5 weeks to receive, remove the old/existing one, and do it correct the 2nd time around.
Of course, i need to send back the one I have right now when I receive the other one...
I'll post a message on how my 2nd attempt went, (with extra bottle of solution, yeah! that's right! I demanded to the agent on the email for 2nd bottle of solution)...either way, baby shampoo & distilled water is good enough too.
Screen Clarity - 100% or 99.99% , unless you angle the phone differently in the light or reflection , you dont see it.
I had the full body but took it off.
I bought the white X10 in dubai, like everyone else said fitted poorly and bleeds the colours from your case, I had to take it off as everyone was saying how battered the phone looked after a month.
It is pretty bullet-proof though, sure it must look better on the black phone!

Edges of the phone get scratched very easily...

I am not having any glass cracking problems so far. The only negative in the build quality of z3c for me are the plastic edges, especially the narrow line between the glass and translucent edges. The lines got scratched even from putting a case on the phone. After 1 month of using a hard plastic case I got the edges of the phone pretty damaged. However I have found a simple solution to make the edges smooth again. Used a very soft steel wool to make it look like new again. However you have to be really careful and cover your screen doing this...
Agreed - I would also say that the back picks up scratches pretty easily but as someone who likes to use their phone naked (apart from and back glass screen protectors) this is my main build quality gripe.
Many thanks for the soft steel wool tip, I've just ordered some! Also got a bumper case on the way - I'd have preferred to not use one but the plastic they've used for the z3c seems to be softer than that used in the z1c. I did have some dings on the side of that phone but they were the result of harder impacts.

steel wool
Where did you buy the steel wool and can it also fix my scrathed metal edge on my sony z3
Unfortunetely, Im an expert in this case as well... I scratched mine walking out of the shop, where I bought this phone, yes the same day just a few minutes after takin it. I picked up the white one Z3C and after falling some black dots stayed. I was so unhappy, because all of my phones looks brilliant, like a brand new phones after a year of using (S Z Z1 Z2). This time was different. As I said, it had been driving me crazy so I sold that phone and bought a new one, white again. This time I ordered the gel case first, and I recommend you guys do the same before buying. Just a little smart tip for you, I might be saving your life right now
But yes... the place you described scratches easily. Confirmed.

Dust magnet?

I am about to buy a new unlocked phone to replace my Z1 Compact. I would like to buy a Z5 Compact, but I really hate that I had to wrap my Z1 in plastic, front and back, just to make it functional. 5 minutes naked and the thing is covered in dust. You lucky folks who already have a Z5 ... can you tell me if there's been any improvement to the phone that eliminates the static cling the Z1 suffered from, along with a real issue with finger prints? My son, his wife, and my daughter all have an iPhone. All 3 use their phones without a case or screen protector. No static dust issue and no real finger print issue. I'm not a fan of Apple and own a lot of Android software that I really like, so I'd have to be really upset with Android to switch. All opinions appreciated!
Backside glass is matte finish so the fingerprints aren't visible except youre searching for them at an angled view. This also stand for the side which is polycarbonate. The front however is a fingerprint magnet if you have the black version, i think the white one i much better for hiding the prints. But i use tempered glass for protection purposes and don't care at all how it looks like.
Thanks for your reply. More questions... Do you have anything on the matte back to protect it? If not, any visible scratches? What's your opinion of the scratch resistance both front and back?
The glasses are a bit pulled inside the whole housing so there is less chance for scratches. But i have a silicon case over the back and sides so theres no chance it'll scratch.

Completely Naked?

Is anyone using this phone completely naked? No case, no screen protector, no back protection? I asked this another way a little earlier; only one response. Very curious. I'm looking at the Z5 Compact and the Samsung S6 Edge. I prefer the specs and size of the Z5, but I know 2 people who use their Edge without any protection. After several months, they still look good.
All opinions appreciated.
Thanks.
Not very old but I use mine with a tempered glass screen protector that you'd never know was there anyhow... Phone doesn't have a mark or look worn
Any protection on the back?

Well, it is glass at the back, it's just frosted.
I have screen protectors both sides. Usually backside gets more hits
I just put a tempered glass screen protector on mine and am debating getting a $3 aluminum bumper from eBay until the Devilcase is released. I like the look of the phone naked and have had it that way for a few weeks, but I already have a few tiny nicks on the poly carbonate ridge along the backside. They're hardly noticeable, but the phone hasn't taken any hard drops. I'm thinking the PC won't hold up long term without getting damaged.
I've been using the phone without case since one day.
I'm just worried about the camera glass. I'd put a ring a bumpon or something to lift up that area a bit.

Completely naked here. I am worried of dropping the phone, cause its damn slippery...

i never used any kind of protection for any phone i owned.
why should i make it ugly to save it from getting ugly by time?

It's kind of matt glass. Very good for me, no visible finger prints
Running mine naked but have only had it for a day. It's the smallest phone I've used in awhile and I've almost dropped it a bunch of times. I have a tpu case coming today to help with the grip.

I've only owned two smart phones in my life. The very first one, I got a silicone case and a SGP (plastic) screen protector. I've scratched the screen protector maybe twice, not sure if it would have scratched glass. I owned it for 2 years
For my second phone, I saw some videos about how silicon cases and bumpers don't really protect against drops because of how thin they are. I decided I didn't need the case but still got the protector since it has no affect on clarity, feel, thickness. I've had it for three years. Scratched the screen protector three times. I don't know how it happened but I did get a tiny crack in the bezel. Since it's black its barely noticeable.
I've dropped my phone plenty of times. Usually not from far, like 2-3ft onto carpet.
I just ordered the Z5 Compact. I decided to try the tempered glass protector. And I also ordered the Orzly Fusion bumper case. I figure the hard back might actually protect something. I figure the slippery body and sharp corners make it more susceptible to damage. Also, I'm paying full price for this phone so I'm more inclined to protect it.
I read about people that use their phones naked all the time. Maybe it really isn't needed but I don't want to take the chance with my own phone.
One other alternative I can think of is to buy insurance for your phone. Something with a low deductible.

How weak is the back panel of yhe z5

We will have small accidents for sure and this issue the remaining gripe before buying this phone. Any thoughts or experiences?

I use tempered glass front and back protectors, from devilcase.
Together with the grey devilcase aluminum bumper which is rock-solid.
The tempered glass protectors won't scratch as fast as foils; i use them for almost a year now and no single scratch even when looking thru a magnifier.
The aluminum bumper will prevent bending in pocket when something heavy lands on my phone in my pocket.
They are quite expensive (for a case) but in my opinion definitely worth it.
Google it, devilcase

Did all your devices, with or without any cases, survive drops?
i have dropped my z5 a load of times by this point and i have yet to notice any damage on anywhere but the metal band around the edge of the device
also i use my phone without a case so i have to say the z5 is way more stronger than my z2
Mine fell 2 times on my hardwood floor from 1-1.5 m, not even a scratch. Then I bought and used this spigen hybrid case, never dropped since.

hi fellow pinoy hehe
yeah get the z5, i have it for 3 months already and dropped it several times and thankfully no scratches or whatever. It looks so nice I sometimes just look at it and hold it for a whole minute haha
I use a case though, just in case (pun heavily intended hahaha)
I wish I had the same experiences everyone else here did. The day after I got my z5, my phone slid off a very very slightly tilted work surface (the back of the phone is extremely slippery) and it fell about 3 feet onto a linoleum flooring. The back is now all cracked. Found out afterwards that lots of people recommend tempered glass front and back for the z5. I have them on now haha
I think back panel is not that much weak the problem is camera lens side of back panel. it straches very easily as Sony used very poor material at this part

indeed, it's stupid considering that plastic scratches that easily and is that vulnerable ( /me squinting at the LG V30 with its reinforced glass lens)
