Yeah, since it went through the FCC, I'm hoping for a simultaneous release. Unfortunately, none of the 'leaked' advertisements have so much as hinted at a WiFi version, so I doubt it's going to be so soon.
I'm undecided on whether thats a good thing or not. As early adopters we're taking the risk that this thing is not rootable. If its not I for one will be really disappointed.
What I'm saying is letting the 3G guys take the risk could be decent for those looking forward to WiFi.

Most, if not all, Motorola phones have a locked bootloader. I don't know what this means exactly, since I've never had a Moto phone, but it can't be good for development. I'll bet the Xoom's bootloader is also locked.

I can't remember a device that was a "Google Experience" that was locked.
was the milestone considered a Google experience?
I figure if it's the wifi only model there should be no carrier requirements for moto.

I don't think there is anything that explicitly says what standard a Google experience device needs to adhere to, other than straight vanilla android goodness... I guess I need to refine my statement from earlier.
The way the Xoom is being marketed, it seems like it is being pushed similarly to the Nexus S. With Google working specifically with the Moto Xoom as a showcase for their new 3.0 platform I would be hard pressed to think it would be locked down.
as a caveat to my previous statement, Motorola is the only manufacturer that has successfully locked down any major portion of the OS from modders, so it is kind of scary to think of such a sweet device getting overlooked by the development community here at XDA.
I have the Droid X, and while you can root it... you can't mess with the dang kernel. Take a look at the type of ROMs for the Nexus line of phones.. and then compare them to the type of ROMs for the Droid X. I love my Rubix and ApeX ROMs tho, so don't think I'm ungrateful... we have a great community I just hope the Xoom doesn't share the same fate.
I just hope it's within the 30 day return window that we find out if it's locked or not.

Thats where I'm worried. Marketing is inherently deceptive as is Verizon in my limited experience.

It varies, depends on how difficult the device was to root. Sometimes a device is rooted before it's even released, and sometimes it can take months.
usually someone would have rooted the device by now lol... The incredible was rooted before it was available, and so was the EVO.
I'm sure root will be achieved, but kernel access is another story entirely. Since most who do initial rooting on devices know where to find the possible roadblocks, it shouldn't be too far off from launch when we find out if the device is encrypted or not. I give it 2 days after release max and we'll know if it has an encrypted bootloader.

Its true, lol... I got my evo the day it released. Had it less than 20 minutes and was already going thru the rooting process. I think the OG root method was put a week or so before the phone actually came out. No idea how the hell they do it but im glad they do.
Why have things been so quiet on the dev front lately?
There was an initial flurry of activity, and most of the big ticket items were taken care of like rooting, sideloading, enabling tethering, webtop hacks, HDMI mirroring, etc. Thanks to DG and the other devs for that!
However, afaik we've only got 2 ROMs so far. I was hoping to join in the dev community when I get the time, but there doesn't seem to be much of one anymore.
Other moto devices with locked bootloaders do have significantly more activity. I'm tempted to jump ship to the Verizon Thunderbolt now... pity because I really like the Atrix despite it's locked bootloader.
(I don't mean to disparage the work done so far... I realize that one of the reasons activity has slowed down is because the big ticket items have been taken care of
Like I've stated in another post in a different thread. Without an unlocked bootloader, you're going to be hearing crickets in these forums soon, as peoples 30 day trial periods are soon coming up. Sure not everyone is returning it but no dev support means a dead device for those of us that want custom roms. There is nothing more to say. If for some off chance the bootloader becomes unlocked you can always buy it again if you still want to support motorola. But don't keep this device based on hope. Accept that moto screwed you and return it while you still can. I am 7 days to go...
No, I'm not keeping it based on hope. I want to keep it because I really like the form factor of the phone as well as its resolution and battery life. I also wanted a phone with HDMI out.
You don't need a custom kernel to have a ROM - sure that imposes limitations on what you can do. In fact, the GingerBlur ROM proved that you can get some enhancements of newer Android releases without changing the kernel.
I can understand though that fewer DEVs would be motivated to work on a phone with a locked/signed bootloader. However, the Droid X forums seem to be pretty active...
i too am a little disappointed at the shrinking dev base - i've seen some leave. however of AT&T android phones, regardless of the software this one appeals to me the most for its form factor/size (i wanted 4" over 4.3"), front-camera and color (all black). the HDMI out (+enabled webtop) is nice too, along with the screen resolution.
'Tis a shame. From what I've been hearing, the Atrix was a sales flop. So much wasted potential.
Well, I'm sticking with it regardless. I got it on launch day and I plan to enjoy it to the fullest.
The tegra 2 game that I want isn't even out yet.

Maybe this'll be a lesson for Motorola and they might decide to unlock the bootloader after all. I'm this close to jumping ship to the HTC Thunderbolt... I'll probably be grandfathered into their unlimited plan for the foreseeable future.
I tried to get ATT to give me an additional GB by threatening to switch to Verizon, but all they gave me was crappy $25 credit. **** Motorola and **** ATT!!

Did just that and never looked back. LTE Blows at&t out the water where I live and even tough single core...it feels just as fast.

It does suck we have one person creating roms. Ken is doing an amazing job but only one man can only do so much. I feel that if more devs were here creating roms people would stick around. I plan on keeping mine for awhile since I bought it outright...I'm due for an upgrade soon so well see.

It's not the devs fault that Moto screwed them, most folks got it on the hint that moto had changed for the better and was going to make the bootloader open.
I can't blame the folks for taking them back.
Hell I have a Captivate, Hardware outstanding ( just like the Atrix, ok minus the GPS ) Software flat out sucks, at least the devs could do something with the Captivate with the open bootloader. It makes it a pretty damn good phone.
Just imagine what could done with the Atrix if the devs could actually do something with it, Kens isn't real happy either as I'm sure his considerable talent is being stifled by Moto, that burns his ass a lot more than folks returning it because moto rammed it home hard.
I'm sitting on couple of upgrades right now and would get the Atrix in a heartbeat IF Moto and ATT would allow it to be open for the devs. In the meantime I'll wait and may switch to Sprint ( even though I've been Orange for over ten years ) for the Evo3d ( think I read somewhere it has Wimax and LTE radios in it ), that thing is looking real nice and about as future proof as it get's in this industry.
Atrix is a bust Motorola really blew it with the locked bootloader. They underestimated the developer communities influence and it's coming back to bite them in their fat greedy ass.

It's not like everyone is saying that. But the ones saying that are really being vocal about it. I don't get all the hate. Phone has not even one month and mostly I see people complaining about the locked bootloader. Eventually, that will get cracked.

i don't believe this statement for a second. I really don't think this phone is being returned in droves by average users.
in the Eyes of Motorola reliability for 90% of users > support of 10% who want to hack. and a locked down phone is much better for reliability.

Given the specs of this phone and the capabilities I think that the development community represents a higher percentage in the overall buyers base for this phone. Rooting and custom ROMs are becoming more "fashionable" to average users. I'm not saying that there will be an immediate impact within the lifespan of this phone but if Moto continues these methods it will turn around to bite them
look at the other dual core tegra phone(optimus 2x). the devs and the the people there seems to be really happy with their phone now that clockwordmod is available and some custom kernels are already taking into place(optimus 2x is not yet release here in US and some part of europe)
so i think the locked bootloader is one of the major culprit why most devs are leaving atrix and so are some people who wants custom roms for their phone. its a big disppointment really, moto and at&t are [insert word here]
its a good phone but motorola is acting like apple.
I am going to begin a bounty to all of our devs of $100 to whomever can get a working unlocked bootloader for the Verizon 4GLTE P605V Samsung Galaxy 10.1 2014 edition. It's complete nonsense that going as far back as far as April (the first post I found searching for this) that there isn't a solution.... If you own this tablet variant as well, please jump on board.
Most devs for the 10.1 2014 have moved to the pro version. So this may be really hard to get. if you look at the unlocked versions there is little to no support for them right now as well.

All the Verizon/Samsung locked bootloaders have been unlockable to date as well as the AT&T varieties. Check the S4, Note 3 and S5 threads.

I don't really care about the S4, my Note 3 is already unlocked, and could care less about the S5 as well. What I AM concerned with is getting my 10.1 2014 Verizon edition unlocked so I can actually get TWRP on it an put on custom ROM's. For a forum filled with lots of experts and geniuses, no one seems to want to take any time or make any effort. I am literally begging! Using any version of Odin has failed trying to get TWRP on my tablet. All the ROMs I have looked at say to install that as a prerequisite. So what is a guy to do? Should I just put a round from my .45 through it and call it a day? I am outside the 14 day return window now with Verizon, so unless someone can give me a clue as to what I am doing wrong, then I am royally screwed..........

You are missing the point. Bootloaders are not a simple security hack. They are the proprietary coding that allows the device to boot. There is NO decompiling, sorting through code, figuring out the lock and then unlocking it. There needs to be an exploit to get in and change it. Which means there is a 99% chance the wrong exploit attempt will brick the device...an not the "brick" all these people talk about mistakenly on this site...a REAL brick...dead paperweight. Think that it is an issue with this sites "geniuses" not wanting to do it? Maybe you would understand better if you blindfolded yourself and tried to assemble a 5000 piece jigsaw puzzle....only you get an electric shock with every wrong piece you play.
I mentioned the other devices not to see if you "care"...it is to let you know the same method is employed to lock those as your tablet and they are just as popular with the "geniuses" that genuinely want to unlock the bootloader. AND have large bounties on them.
As to what are you supposed to do? Research next time. I would have to say that in reading text, it is generally hard to understand the tone of the text. While I wasn't throwing a tantrum, the tone of your reply is pretty unmistakable. When someone comes here genuinely looking for help and assistance with a device, is it a general practice to publicly belittle and berate them? As to my bounty, I started off low to see if others would jump on board or not. As to my carrier, I have been with Verizon from day one, get a rather large corporate discount from them on devices and accessories, and have 6 lines through them, so why just to get this tablet to do what I want it to, would I change carriers? Every device that I have had in the 'smart'phone era has been Verizon, and someone has found a way to unlock them. So I apologize if I came of looking like a prick, as that was not at all my intention. I would gladly personally pay up to $100.00 if someone could help. It is very frustrating to only be able to do half of what I want to achieve with my tablet. I'm as far as I personally can go on it. If anyone was offended by my wording, again, I am sorry for that. Your phrase that asks if you should put a bullet into your tablet certainly sounded like a bit of a tantrum. Sorry if I somehow misconstrued that. Then also sounding like you were belittling XDA developers because they did not unlock the bootloader yet.. Sounded a bit entitled. There are devices years old that have never been unlocked. I have done my best to explain why there should never be a time limit or expectations of the bootloader ever being unlocked yet you also shot that down as selfishly exclaiming you did not care about those examples and were only concerned about what matters to you. Did I leave anything out? Sorry if I somehow misinterpreted any of that. Sounds like you need to start making a decision as to what is more important to you, your corporate discount or an unlocked bootloader. Have your bounty but I already explained older Verizon devices with the same locked bootloaders has stumped the security geniuses so far.

The devs were never really all that involved with this tablet. It is highly unlikely they will unlock the Verizon version unless they figure out the other Samsung products. Even if they would unlock the tablet you my not get any devs that are willing to port their Roms over to the Verizon version.

OK, I have a SM-P605v with a broken LCD (not the screen itself, but the display is discolored and not displaying correctly). It was previously Rooted and I have gotten screen emulators working when hooked up to my laptop. I would be willing to donate this to any Dev willing to work on the exploit. If there is a risk of bricking the device, then rest assured it's no biggie since the screen is bad on it. Please PM me if you are interested.

I just got a SM-P605 that is unlocked. Once I figure out where the kernal came from perhaps I can be of help here. I really want to get this thing rooted and connected with my carrier. I had had a SM-P600, but it was smashed and could not be repaired. That's why I bought this tablet. Otherwise this P605 is totally stock and runs like a very well behaved powerhouse should.

No you don't need unlocked bootloader to root. I think I used towel root years ago to root this tablet.

You know I really loved my SM-P600, but it was badly damaged and I don't know how or where to order in the left speaker, on/off switch from. So got really frustrated advanced ordered an SM-P605v instead and was able to get one that has an unlocked boatloader. I've not rooted it yet, or mounted TWRP on it. I may not root it though I'd like to. Even so, I'm looking into it and while, though I'm extremely happy with it,I may eventually root it.
I've explored a lot of options so far and none of them, so far, work for an SM-P605v running Android 5.1.1.
I'll get back with you about a week from now.
By the way, this tablet, and the SGN Pro are still much more powerful and capable than the Surface Pro or IPad Pro. This, even though they are getting a little older.
By the way,I spoke to a friend of mine who owns the large IPad Pro today. Apple hasn't optimised the Home screen yet, even after all these months. You'd think they'd have done better by their consumer base by now.
Even so, I'm so pleased with the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1(2014), both with the SM-P600, and the SM-P605. Unless Samsung releases a Tab A that has an S Pen and 32 gigs memory, or releases a substantial upgrade to the SM-P600,SM-P605, and SM-P607, or puts out a new SGN in the series with 64 our 128gigs internal, I'm not open to trading my tablet in. It'll be over my cold, dead body.

This device isn't even 3 months old Goddamn... very mad with LG. Regrets to leave HTC. And BTW where is written which one is newer & which one is older? How are we supposed to know that?? This is cheating....
Not cheating friend. They never promised to unlock your phone when you bought it. Believe me, I know it sucks...I'm right there with you waiting for an unlock myself. This doesn't surprise me one bit, honestly. I'm willing to bet that none of the LG phones sold by carriers will be unlocked by LG in the future either.

Yea I've already told everyone this 3 weeks ago.
I need to decide if I want to buy the G4 in exactly a month from now.
If it won't be unlocked until then, I would sadly wait for the Note 5.
Well that'll pretty much cement my decision to go back to HTC. I don't hate this phone, honestly. It's pretty good and I've had no real issues with it. But (and I'm not interested in arguing WHY I want BL unlock and root. I just do. It's my phone) if there isn't mfg support for the unlock, screw 'em.
Came to the G4 because the M9 camera sucked. I suspect HTC will fix that in their next release at which point I'll go back to a phone that I can unlock and root within 15 minutes of opening the box. Nothing against the G4 itself. It's a solid phone. But I won't be locked down, and while I respect the devs working on this and the work they do, I don't have the patience to wait long term for each LG phone I get. Thought I'd maybe move away from HTC entirely, but...guess not. Oh well.

Came to the G4 because the M9 camera sucked. I suspect HTC will fix that in their next release at which point I'll go back to a phone that I can unlock and root within 15 minutes of opening the box. Nothing against the G4 itself. It's a solid phone. But I won't be locked down, and while I respect the devs working on this and the work they do, I don't have the patience to wait long term for each LG phone I get. Thought I'd maybe move away from HTC entirely, but...guess not. Oh well.

I ALMOST got the M9...just couldn't get past the camera deficiency it has. It's not even a good camera by 2014 standards...and doesn't come close to the best of 2015. I'm willing to even say it isn't as good as the M8's (and possibly even M8. Problem with it is that this year's camera lacks both OIS (which M7 had) and the second camera for depth or imaging chip (which M8 had), leaving it with just a huge MP count and no hardware help to assist the sensor. Sure, software can do some adjustment, but it'll never be like having the actual proper hardware for the job. So while they will likely update the camera...many times, it is still limited by it's unfortunate lack of hardware assistance and isn't likely to ever match any of the other 2015 devices. Best hope from HTC is the "Hero device" they're talking about for this fall.
Either way, I'm gonna stick with LG till next year's flagship round comes out. Sure it sucks to wait for unlock and root, but I'd rather have the top end camera hardware. I use my phone as my primary camera, so I'd rather have bootloader issues than camera deficiency.

Same here, my phone is my primary camera, especially for vacations. And for the record my wife still has her m8 and my son the m7 and you're correct, BOTH of them take better pictures than the M9 does. We'll see about that hero device. I'm up for another JUMP upgrade in November (I'm grandfathered on the twice a year upgrade plan) so it's possible I could jump ship around then. Just have to see. Absolute worst case I pay this thing off and buy something outright. Dunno yet.
Back on topic though (sorry 'bout that ), my main issue is one of patience. It's probably my fatal flaw...as I said I KNOW it takes time to find and package (for money or free) a stable root exploit. Even longer to find a bootloader unlock exploit usually. This isn't the devs fault by any stretch. I'm just used to being able to quickly unlock and root my device...it's been a REAL long time since I've had to wait for root and finding that LG isn't planning to support an unlock is majorly disappointing to me.
I don't know why anyone would buy a carrier phone, and expect a factory unlock. That's what we have XDA for. Anyway, since we know the phone can be rooted, I'm hopeful that we will see a bootloader unlock, or work around as well. The phone hasn't been out that long, so you just have to have a little patience.

'Expect' no. 'Hope' yes. Plus remember I'm coming from HTC where they're unlockable out of the box. Didn't occur to me that LG would flatly refuse to do it. My own fault, but what can you do?
Don't blame LG but your stupid USA cell providers. Which pay a lot of money to let you enjoy their spam.

Well typically I'd agree with you, however this one's LG's decision. TMO doesn't have any issues with unlocked bootloaders. If it was Verizon or AT&T I might agree with you.

Ugh, HTC. I agree with you about their cameras. I started out with the M8 last year, but that camera sucked hard. My wife already had the G3, and when I saw that the devs were confident about rooting/unlocking, I got rid of the M8, bought a G3, and rode it out until it came to fruition.
Is there anyone here who work with LG? I need them to 'deliver' a message..
Here's the thing.. I started with LG G3.. it was a great device and I really love it.. specially the camera.. very nice quality.. and I absolutely loove the root on this thing.. I can switch ROM that I like and add other customization with root ability of course (xposed, adblock, etc..)
And there's the new LG G4.. basicaly an upgrade to LG G3 wich I found very significant upgrade from previous device, LG G3.. without hesitation I upgrade it right away (seeing my lovely expericence with LG G3 before).. But here's the thing.. altough is a wonderful device, I'm very.. very.. very.. very dissapointed they not releasing the root for my device (H818P).. If I known this sooner, I will NOT buy LG G4 and stick to my LG G3..
Soo my 'message' to LG is very clear.. release the unlock, or this is my LAST experience with their phone.. PERIOD.. I heard they are now preparing the LG G4 Pro next year.. well, if they still not releasing the unlock for LG G4, they can forget about it.. well at least from me.. I'm soo done with LG

Yep. Motorola had a couple, and I believe the G2 (I could be wrong on that one though).

I had both, so I was willing to stake my bet that both took better pics (though admittedly I've never had the M9).
I'm right there with ya on waiting sucks.....probably why I've never bought a device this early in it's "life". I usually get it after it's been out for a few months and has at least root.. I was in the unfortunate situation of my Note 4 becoming so unstable on 5.0 that it was hardly functional....would have to reboot 3-5 times a day average. Got the G4 because I couldn't take the idea of having an apple-looking device in my hand LOL

I'm not saying they don't care about you, but lets face it...they don't care about you. If you don't buy another LG, that's what....1 device per year? Maybe two. Consider this...we have what appears to a few hundred users on the G4 thread. We're probably not 1% of the total sales of the G4....and probably never will be. LG is going to look at "the masses" (aka people who don't xda, have no idea what root is, and wouldn't know what to do with unlock), which is like 99% of the users. They'd rather focus on the next update to the G4 or the next model they release, as if they can make it better than Apple or Samsung's next iteration of the smartphone, they can gain thousands of unit sales. Not to mention, this more than likely is a CARRIER driven situation than an LG driven one. Carriers don't really want us being able to remove their ads and other bloat....they worked hard to fatten our phones up!
I think it's a crazy situation that a carrier can decide that YOUR payed device is locked because of advertising bloatware.

It's not because of carrier bloatware. It's largely because of warranty and support. 98% of the people out there aren't going to unlock the phone even if it's able to unlock.Frankly the carriers don't really care about those of us who want to unlock it...we're not a big enough amount of their revenue to matter. Which is why the carriers (well Sprint and TMO anyhow) will usually let you unlock. Like I said, this one isn't because of the carriers (aside from AT&T and Verizon probably). This is about LG not wanting to provide the unlock.
I'm guessing the chances of bootloader unlock are pretty slim. Chances for root maybe decent, but hard to say at this point in time.
The Verizon S6 was a little bit sad with the locked bootloader, but at least PingPong gave us root. Does anyone here know about PingPong and whether or not the creators of it will attempt to address root on the S7?
Maybe all the S5 owners that held out when the S6 released will have interest in the S7 and maybe we could get a bounty started for bootloader unlock. Or is the security so sound that it's not worth the effort because it's too hard to crack?
I already ordered the Verizon S7 Edge anyway, so I guess my fate is sealed.

It seems like it gets worse with each device Samsung releases. I do care about root, and custom roms are nice, but I like the Samsung hardware a lot, so I'm torn. If I had extra money, I'd get a Nexus 6P, but as it is, I got an S7 Edge for $192 spread out over 2 years if I so choose. That sexy hardware combined with a free $300 smart watch (Gear S2) for $8/mo versus Nexus 6P that I'd have to buy outright = tough choice, so I went with Samsung and am hoping it gets rooted. Until it gets root, I won't be able to use Tasker which affects my daily life, so I need to figure out an alternative to Tasker for what I'm using it for now. On the other hand, at least Samsung Pay will still work...quite a small and meaningless consolation.
The fact is, S6 got root which gives me hope that the S7 will, but I am okay without it....I guess. Man, I despise Samsung and Apple for this crap, but their hardware is so nice.
It's really not Samsung's fault, Verizon asked them too. It's usually not like that on T-mobile

This. If it weren't for Samsung pay, I would consider other phones. Samsung pay is seriously the killer feature in the US though.
Lets hope for the best, but I am guessing root only.
I can almost guarantee you that the S7 and Edge won't get even root. Many people don't care anymore as much as they used to because phones these days don't require root as much as they did before.
Honestly the only reason I would need it is to force uninstall all of the bloat, but we have Package Disabler for that which does almost the same thing except it doesn't free up the storage space.

Sorry to burst your bubble but the past 2 generations of Verizon Samsung phones have yet to receive root. It is not going to happen with the implementations put in by Google to verify the system upon booting. The note 5 never saw root, the s6 only shortly saw root on early shipping firmware, and the Note 4 never saw root after KitKat. Just letting you know so that you don't get your hopes up.
You will have to have an unlocked bootloader from here on out unless something huge happens.

Past 2? I am sorry but my Galaxy S6 Edge has root..
I've rooted every phone I had until the DT2 and now my s7e. since I can now disable bloat and it not show up any longer I don't really miss root. And with the SD card storage isn't a problem.

Sorry, forgot to mention that one when I mentioned the S6. They both got root on the shipped firmware, but after it was patched no phone after that has gotten root. The note 5, or the edge plus. I'm not trying to be negative, I'm just really upset about the situation of the root possibilities of all the new locked down phones. I really wanted a Note 5 but it was also said to be basically impossible by the community so it saved me time and money. I was just trying to do the same for others.

It is not impossible, just many people don't want to spend the time to root the Verizon or AT&T, why would they if they can easily root and mod the ones with unlocked bootloaders.
Look at Apple, for example, they try really hard to make their phones hard to jailbreak, but yet people find ways to do it.

Ya there doesn't seem to be much effort put into Samsung + Verizon devices anymore. I can see why, like you mentioned about locked bootloaders, but there are large swaths of users in the US that really don't have the option to get unlocked Samsungs. Like in my entire state, we have to get Verizon unless we want sub-par coverage, and then it's AT&T with locked bootloader, too.
I'll just keep my fingers crossed but am doing okay without root so far (about 14 hours in with my S7Edge).

The quick connect is removable from the notifcations, you just have to press the arrow and then edit to turn it off.

Two ways to remove it, dropdown your notifications and edit the quick toggles. The option to turn off is at the bottom.
You can also disable the quickconnect app as well.
