We all knew it was coming, but it looks like Motorola has finally officially changed hands from Google to Lenovo. I went to their site this morning and got a new flash animation site entry trailer that said Motorola a Lenovo Company. The 2014 X was certainly a product of the Google era, it will be interesting to see which way it goes now.
As long as they don't screw with quick updates and the performance of these phones, I don't care.
Well i ordered my moto x yesterday through motomaker. It already has been assembled and is now shipping from shenzen. I have to say i am living in Germany

Shouldn't really change much for these devices, Google is still in the works with Motorola due to the Nexus 6. So in terms of "3rd parties" outside of Google, Moto should be getting the updates for L out the quickest (helped by their stock approach as well).
It's still A "Motorola" phone. Parent company changing doesn't suddenly change that.

You must be joking right ?
Motorola - An iconic brand with it's own character.
What I want and expect is it remains Motorola forever. I bought my last Moto when company was dying, it was an Atrix 2 which is still my primary and only phone I have been using since more than 2.5 years. That time I though it may turn out my last Moto. But I am feeling so glad and lucky that company bounced back so strongly and today I have few great choices as my upgrade options. :good:
Though would have liked to see ownership of the company would have remained in the hands of Motorola itself or atleast in hands of Google.

I don't think HTC will, remember they gave away 5000 evos to developers months before the official launch. Lets why the EVO was rooted as soon as it was launched.

Actually I believe there is another motorola phone out there that uses similar technology. That one has been out for some time now and it still hasn't been rooted.

Milestone, same encrypted bootloader, no self destruct.
They have root, but no bootloader access. So they are now running custom bootloader that runs inside android, boot twice to get into custom rom

The efuse "self destruct" chip is in all omap3 phones INCLUDING the droid and milestone. The droid has a hacked bootloader and didn't go kaboom. Apparently this chip exists in all these phones but motorola does not actually utilize it (but they could hypothetically).
Now that being said, the milestone and droidx do have locked and encrypted bootloaders. I think they have a lot better chance of getting cracked now cuz there will be a lot more dev attention for the droidx than the milestone.
So no, the droidx will not go BOOM, you got sucked into the hype machine (don't feel bad I did too initially). Still glad I got an evo.
Edit: I will edit myself here with the caveat that motorola might have put a new, more sinister efuse into the droidx. Noone knows for sure until pictures of a bricked phone show up, and not even the most dedicated dev wants to brick his brand new phone on the first day lol.
I really haven't cared for Motorola's Android devices anyways. The Cliq (Dext) was clunky and didn't even go past the Cupcake update. The Droid (Milestone) just didn't feel right in my hands, and I didn't care for the four row physical keyboard rather than the five like on the G1. And now this on the Droid X? I'll be sticking with HTC for a while. They may be slow to update, what with Sense and all, but at least they're not doing crap like this.
I would like to see now those who returned the EVO a got the DroidX...
Issue No. 16992 in the Android Open Source Project has to do with Exchange support on the Xoom after the Android 3.1 update -- namely how it's not working.
Comment No. 28 on the issue, apparently made by a Googler, seems to address this, saying:
"There should be a 3.2 update coming within days, and that should help those of you with the Xoom."

You are not alone. I take pleasure in knowing that none of my money will be spent on Motorola products again. I am happy that the margin of error on their part is so blatantly large that there will be tons of people who walk away from this experiance unwilling to ever buy a product from Motorola again on principle.
I like common sense of it all.
Let me rephrase that for you.

I thought I learnt my lesson with the Moto Atrix, but no, I had to go and get the MZ601 (EU) tab on Optus and its still sitting on 3.0 - probably never to see the light of 3.1 or 3.2...
Motorola really need to get their Fcuking asses into gear and demand carriers release FW on time and within a set period of the SDK being available.... Until they do this, they'll never be a top 3 manufacturer ever
From what I just read on the Moto forum, it seems the firmware approval process goes :
Carrier -> Moto -> Google
I honestly think it's Google holding up the approval process and moto is getting kicked in the teeth for it, same way they did with microSD.
I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt for now.

i can't imagine they will think twice about non us updates. If they ignored us for 3.1 then 3.2 will probably be the same. I dont really understand this but how can they ignor the rest of the world ??
The US is the larger market, also Motorola is a American company.
Just like Japanese companys release updates and products in Japan before anywhere else.
did you see the pie chart for android versions?
3.1 has 0.5% and 3.0 had 0.4% or something
'most' people have 3.1 now - so maybe they just imagine that most people have a US Xoom (or one of the other many models that have the 3.1 updates..)
Moto might think they are catering for a minority?
i thought it was interesting most 3.x were 3.1 though
You know that our wonderful developers will be making it possible for all of us to get the latest updates ASAP.

Pretty much my thoughts too. I pretty much knew right when I saw the Nexus 5 that Moto X and droids would be about a month or so behind in the update cycle.
What I'm actually excited to see is if 4.4 actually gives Verizon phones the ability to use Google Wallet or whatever payment system/NFC trickery

The Google/Verizon plans for 2014 are probably LTE tablets. Maybe- just maybe- we'll see a Google phone that is VoLTE-only, but I find it hard to believe that Verizon and Google would willingly partner on that. It doesn't seem like Verizon's style.

Agreed. There's nothing that I've thrown at this phone that it hasn't been able to handle. At one point there is going to be diminishing returns when it comes to computing power and phone software. That time seems to be about now. Until more hardcore GPU driven software starts to come out I don't feel I need to upgrade anytime soon.

It was actually July 1.
Soak test was in June, but OTA started July 1.
Back in March, Motorola insiders leaked info that the Droid Turbo would get Lollipop in July. We thought that was a joke, but it was the sad truth.
I stand corrected...
I still think our huge delay had more to do with problems with lollipop itself then Motorola. I'm going with 6.0 before the end of 2015.

Lol that's the price we pay for having an Android phone.
If you think it's bad on Android, you'll laugh at how often the Windows phones get updated (never).
No, it was not that bad with my old nexus.
I have to admit one thing: my moto x 2014 is by far from a pure hardware point of view the best smartphone I ever had.
But from a pure software point of view I'm overly deceived. Moto has made a lot of publicity of themselves arguing they are the best at providing updates in a small timeframe, but they never respected their own claims.
If in future I have to choose between an OK smartphone with stellar software support and a stellar smartphone with no guarantee of software updates ( especially monthly security updates ) I will for sure choose the first one.
But yes, other than that Moto X Force looks good
