Streaming the picture of Xperia Play - Xperia Play General

The Xperia Play has Bluetooth. Has anyone ever made a successful attempt of wirelessly streaming the picture from the Xperia Play to a device with a bigger screen? For example, a TV or a tablet. It would be nice to play games on a bigger screen sometimes.
Anyone think that this is possible? Are there any apps out there?

Wifi is about 50mb/s for most people some people have 100mbs and a few have 175 if u you have fiber op. Video that is not buffered is choppy on 50mb/s and play video would have to be a live stream to play games so wifi would have to be around 100mb/s. Bluetooth transmits around 7mb/s so you do the math.
You could look some more but I HIGHLY doubt it I believe this was explored a while ago. I forget the prohect name but it was laggy which is a damn shame. Bluetooth at the moment is really only good for audio and small file transfer. Unless you want it to take an hour. Ive transfered movies via bluetooth around 700mb takes quite a while. Check google play for apps.

3.1 update - flash streaming now works ok?

Hi guys
I had a xoom but sold it (long story). Seeing that 3.1 seems to fix so many of the issue i'm considering jumping back but would have a short question.
Does viewing / streaming flash movies in 720 now work or is it still extremely choppy? I do not mean in the youtube app, but in the browser from sites such as e.g. project free tv online. This (and the frequent fcs in the browser and market) was the main reason i got rid of my xoom, because i would like to use it (also) to stream tv shows while exercising on the indoor bike :-b
Otherwise great device!
Thanks, and happy xooming

I haven't had any FC's yet, second day on 3.1, I must say I'm very pleased.
Sry, I have no idea about flash playback.
Pirated high profile video will still be just as choppy on any tegra 2 device.

forgive my naivity, but what do you mean with pirated? i did not know that projct free tv is illegal (seriously).
then let's talk about other sites, such as e.g. ted.com or the media libraries of our official tv channels (sf.tv, ard.de, 3sat.de etc.), they all were not watchable at all, so choppy :-(

I was being tounge-in-cheek as I don't care if its pirated... but most people complain about 720p videos not working when they have torrented it as most pirated TV shows and movies use high profile.
High profile playback is a hardware issue. Overall flash video is much better.

Video seems to work OK. Flash playback is pretty good. Movies on the other hand are hit or miss. 720p seems to need an overclock to play nice on my xoom.

I've yet to receive the 3.1 update, still on 3.0.1, but I can assure you 720p videos work just fine, you just have to play nice with your encodes.
I'm on 3.1, I was able to watch some 720p videos on you tube in the browser. Depending on the amount of motion or what have you they sometimes lagged out but generally it was fine. I watched the "big buck" demo and it was pretty smooth.

[Q] Q)Can Nexus 10 Play 1080p Blu-Ray MKV Rip via USB-OTG

Really thinking about buying a Nexus 10, but i'm not sure if it could play from a OTG cable. So here's the process i'm thinking for example.
* Load MakeMKV and take a bluray I own.
* Rip it to MKV without DTS audio
* Copy it to a NTFS formatted Flash Drive
* Mount via Stickmount
* Load from MXPlayer
i'm thinking it should work with a H.264 rip, but i'm not sure about VC-1.
If someone could try this please post results, thanks.
Yes it can with no problems. I have a 500 gig slim portable harddrive that gets power off of N10 with no issues playing my mkvs 1080p movies. Something I couldn't do when I had my Infinity. If the native player isnt playing your movie try Dice player or MX player. Also I use Nexus Media importer to detect my hard drive.

i'm assuming your MKVs are rips from an original source without encoding. Does it also handle VC-1 MKVs? Thanks for posting your results.
Jingle bells jingle bells jingle all the way
no problemo here
but why use MKVs?
just copy the m2ts file to the harddrive and play it
i use BS player since it has the fastest hardware decoding from the players i have tried.
BS player is also the ONLY player that can play the 2560P Timescape video without framedrops (with hardware decoding)
yes i have tested a bunch of other players and all others cant keep a steady framerate in that video.

Hi all
Thinking of getting this tablet next month over the Transformer Infinity. My main concern was its ability to play mkv files. I've read some mixed reviews about some being able to play it and others that can't. Those that could seemed to have ripped it themselves.
Would I need to re-encode all my mkv's that I currently have? Or will they play natively with BS or Dice player?

all MKV movies i have plays most of the part with HW decoding in BS player.
as long as they uses HW decoding they play as they should without framedrops.
some MKV files uses SW (software) decoding and that one is slower so it can be some framedrops with those.
but all MKV/M2TS//TS/MPEG/MP4 you name it plays with BS player and thats great.
they also plays with sound from DTS HD
as i said no problemo
just buy one N10
you are going to be amazed with the details this screen shows even at lower res movies like 1080p
you can never get those details with an FULL HD TV at 47" or 50"
the res and the pixeldensity is just to bad
you can call 1080p movies that you watch on the N10 as "Beyond HD"
thats how it looks

How do you find the 16gb? I'm hunting for a 32gb in South Africa. I'm worried my full hd movies (+-14gb) wont be able to 'stream' quickly enough and i wont have space to copy it across.
Do you experience any problems like this?
NTFS and custom roms
Is anyone else having an issue with ntfs devices and custom roms? Using the cm10 2012-12-23 nightly (and each previous), stock kernel, stickmount, and ntfs-3g in /sdcard/ I have been unable to successfully mount ntfs drives. FAT and FAT32 drives work fine, stickmount throws no error with ntfs drives, but the /sdcard/usbstorage/sda1/ shows up empty. When I disconnect the drive, even after stickmount unmount, android shows the unexpected removal warning.

I have ripped my copy of the dark knight rises using makemkv and I transferred the resulting 37Gb mkv file to a 1Tb USB HD (does not use external power). When I try and play it, it takes forever, plays a couple of seconds, freezes and so on. Audio is ropey at best.
I have then tried using DVDfab to rip the Blu Ray to the HD and try and play those files. Same result.
I then converted it into a 12Gb mkv using handbrake and this is still not much better.
I have tried BSPlayer (BS.... I should say. If I try and chnage the audio track, it crashes. Try and do anything and it crashes).
Works ever so slightly better in MX player, but not much. How did you get smoot playback?
Would it be the Hard disc asit is does not use ext power (It's a samsung 2.5" USB3 thingy) or do I need to encode it?
Thanks.

Wel seems if I plug it into a powered hub (on my monitor), then it works fine. What a bummer. Looks like I will not be able to take my Blu Ray collection with me.

dcnice had some problems to play movies from a USB powered portable harddrive.
You don't have those problem?
Is the battery draining fast when playing from portable harddrive?
Since I primarily will use the portable harddrive for movies when in my car (kids wathcing movies) I assume the best option for me would be to get a harddrive that can be powered from USB but has the option to get additional power from another USB jack. Then I can hook the extra power cable to the USB charger in my car.
Thankful for any recommendations.
Edit:
If I use a USB hub like this and connect the male to my USB Host cable from my Nexus 10 and one female to my car USB charger and another female to my portable harddrive. Will this work?
I am not familiar how you can "add" power to a USB connection. This might even charge my Nexus 10??

Hi from what I am reading the nx10 HDMI out is only mirror image that will not fill the HDTV format. Is this a hardware issue on nexus 10 end or can it be corrected in a software update..? I would actually buy and rent movies with Google play if I can watch them full screen on my TV.
If Google fixes this issue I see more people utilizing their movie service.
Till then I am using Microsoft Xbox.
Thanks...joe
When I connect my N10 to my plasma TV it reports 1080p which is the maximum this TV supports so I think it's device dependent based on the max of either the TV or tablet but given the resolution of the N10 the TV is likely to be the limit.

If you watch movies it does automatically fill the entire screen. It also switches to a slightly different mirroring mode where it doesn't technically mirror.
Games etc. don't fill the entire screen though. Neither does the launcher etc.
1080p
Also confirmed 1080p output to TV from my nexus 10, with a HDMI cable that is a few years old from when I picked up a droid charge a couple of years ago.

I am not sure why I dont get full screenI use a a cable that supports 1080P AND I have to use a hdmi switch because my tv only has 3 inputs and I needed a 4th. When I play the movie trailer in play store it does not widen the screen. I still have black bands on sides like I do when nexus mirrors image. My tv supports 1080p. Is a sony xbr2 40". A little old but if my bluray player is fine why not nexus.

On my LG Full HD 1080p 37" TV, the mirrored display from my Nexus 10 to the TV is always coming out with black edges roung the screen ie not being displayed in full screen. The only options in terms of aspect ratio for the TV are 4:3 or 16:9 when connected to the tablet. The Zoom1 and Zoom 2 options can only be accessed when viewing normal TV or DVDs. Is there a way I can fill up the black edges on the TV with what's being displayed from the tablet? The only way i get full screen is when i watch videos from Google Play Movies. I would live to stream videos from XBMC in full screen mode if possible. Thanks. The info displayed when the OK button on my TV's remote is being pressed shows 1920*1080 @60Hz when Tablet is connected to TV via HDMI

[Q] Can OUYA work as a full-feature mediacenter?

I am interesting in OUYA because it has a slim body. I dont want to play video game on it. The only thing I want to do is to play movie. I have a lot of movies stored in my laptop. The current way that I use is to connect my laptop to HDTV by HDMI. Can OUYA replace my current method? I can play 720P movie(MKV or RMVB) on my cellphone(Galaxy note 2). Ouya has the same equipment(Tegra3 with 1.7G). So I think it can play 720P movie smoothly like my cellphone. Did anyone here try playing moive on OUYA?
Yes the ouya plays 720p movies well. I use xbmc at the time. I was thinking about the ouya or the raspberry pi and I am glad I bought the ouya. The ouya, for my use and purposes, is an awesome media center. The internal storage is small but it has a usb port. Xbmc has support for a network attached storage (nas) which is what I use. The ouya also has the added benefit of games. For only $99.99, I recommend the ouya for your current situation. It also has low power usage and it is highly portable.

if you want to use your ouya exclusively as mediacenter you can start xbmc with a autorun-app, don't know what it's called tho.
only culprit is that the button layout isnt quite optimal when using ouya controller but i'm using my cellphone with yatse installed and as a media-solution this couldn't be any better.
not only 720p but even 1080P movies (shared from my nas) are being played like a charm and if you*'e into 3D the ouya should be able to handle most formats, too...but didn't try that, since my tv doens't support it

i didn't have any issues with fullhd-mkvs yet. for all i know there are some culprits with surround sound, but didn't notice anything major up to now.
you can without any problem plug your sd card reader/usb-harddrive/etc to your ouya. the device will be mounted to /media/usb
if you want you could even use a dvd-drive for your ouya, as long as you are willing to compile the needed module for your kernel.
didn't try it yet, but atrix with tegra 2 was able to do this, so ouya with tegra 3 should be able, too

Short answer: Better get an raspberry pi with Openelec.
Longer Answer:
yes, i do have 2 and did use one as mediaplayer using mostly XBMC (connected to a linux fileserver) at my home and using it with VLC when beeing at my girlfriends place with an 2TB HD.
Unluckily i really cant recommend it atm because the XBMC version for android/ouya is still lacking CEC support, means you cant use your TVs remote for controlling it and it cant do AC3 audio passthrough over HDMI (if i remember correctly). The XBMC for android still cant play a lot of movie files my Raspberry PI does play without problems. Therefore it makes a much better media player if its ok for one to not use the most fancy XBMC Skins. (I recommend Bello Skin)
In addition to this the Ouya lacks support for direct flashing and a lot of poeple find the companies politics highly questionable. The not acceptance of the last TOS locked my Ouya Console completely and not just the market. Its softbricked now. It has been sold as an "open" project but turns out to be as closed as "a nuns arse". Therefore its unluckily unlikely that we will see an Openelec port for the Ouya. Someone did port Debian to Ouya so there might be a solution using Debian and XBMC but AFAIK there are not all drivers and libs working atm.
ยจ
cheers,
Tycho
Dont mean to be rude but i dont think you are objektive here.
I dont know what files you are unable to play but i am using mine a lot for Multimedia and didnt have any issues with audio at all. I know that some special dts Formats are incompatible for now.
Surly there are some things about ouya that many of us don't like but that's not the point here. Some are codec support and cec which are still under construction and might always be, but seriously: raspberry?
I really wouldn't want to have such a laggy interface and long folder loading times.
If you really want sth fully compatible with all major Codecs and cec and so on get a finished product like little black box or sth similar. Else be happy to have sth. to tinker with.

Losing faith if I'm honest. I have been giving this project my backing because it seemed to have an enthusiastic following.
I'm not sure there is the focus on the issues that matter to ME, I'm not sure how many people wanted this little box specifically for XBMC but I suspect it was a few. I know the DTS/AC3 issue is an XBMC problem and nothing to do with OUYA but the several other little niggles that affect it are not being addressed.
I think I am going to sell it, I am done waiting for it.. the time multi audio is comming if it even is comming the ouya will be old. The lack of support and community is the other reason.

Ok what I experienced so far is this :
Normally I have my ouya plugged into my TV which is set up to pass aby audio signal through to my home cinema center via optical output. There I never had any issues up to now. Lately I had plugged the ouya into the TV of our bedroom and with xbmc I get audio issues as well.
But vlc and I guess plex as well are able to play ball those files without any issue.
So i guess it's also up to your setup which audio technologies are supported.

I use xbmc on ouya and I have dts and DD passthrough at least on my sony 5.1 home theater. It seems that it depend also from your home theater and/or TV as if you connect the ouya directly to TV and TV doesn't have audio pass through, it will work only analog 2 channel audio.
Good to see someone agreeing to my experiences.

I use xbmc on ouya and I have dts and DD passthrough at least on my sony 5.1 home theater. It seems that it depend also from your home theater and/or TV as if you connect the ouya directly to TV and TV doesn't have audio pass through, it will work only analog 2 channel audio.

Really? Xbmc on ouya can decode DTS and output 5.1 channels to home theater? I saw a lot of people complained of decoding DTS failure. Be honest, I am frustrated when I saw these comments, because I just ordered one from Amazon and I have a lot of 720P DTS MKV movies. My original thoughts is that connecting ouya to 5.1 home theater. I did saw ouya can output 2.0 or 5.1 surround sound effects on their website. Hoping XBMC V13 could be more perfect.
For some ppl it is working indeed, by switching of amp and turn it on again.
But not for everyone... When I try it I just get same static noise as before...
I never had 5.1 working whatever I tried.
Tried several options in xbmc but it would not change anything

Ouya can decode DTS mkv, I just tested it and my home theater received a PCM audio stream (analog settings on xbmc audio output) and then tested the same mkv with digital signal pass through to my home theater (digital HDMI audio output in xbmc settings) that decoded it fine.
Only thing is that if ouya decode the DTS signal, I have PCM 2 channels audio, if my home theater decode it, I have DTS 5.1 channels audio (my HT is only 5.1).
For the records, I use xbmc 13.0 alpha6 from july 14 2013.

You get static noise because your ouya is passing through the digital signal to your TV or HT to decode the signal. And clearly your receiver is not able to decode the audio stream. You have to change the audio setting output of xbmc to "analog" in order to let xbmc decode it before sending it out to your TV or HT.

Brightness is too high when playing videos after Marshmallow update.

When I try and view movies or TV in he Movies & TV app the brightness is too high. It changes from normal brightness to very high while the video is loading to play.
Anyone else having this problem?
Same here, noticing high video brightness and washed out blacks in all apps except Kodi.
I hope Google will put their staged rollout concept to good use and stop the Marshmallow OTA in order to roll out a version where this is fixed instead. Let's see if they're professional enough to actually do that.
Yes seeing that same thing happening. Unwatchable! I am so disappointed at this point. I had to buy another player just so my wife can watch Netflix after the last Netflix bug fiasco, and now this!? I was all excited and told her to watch nexus again and now this... Why do I keep hoping that they will get their **** together!!??!!
Same thing here. Also still not getting surround sound on Netflix through my HDMI switch -> optical receiver.
I just got the OTA upstate for 6.0. Can you guys show examples of how it looks?

I see the difference now. I compared my 5.1.1 Nexus Player with my 6.0 Nexus Player. Not good at all.
Not good at all what are the chances Google will address this? I've contacted them via Facebook a few days ago but not reply yet.
Quite high, I would say. As the primary function of this device is to display video content and this is directly affecting this functionality, expect this to get fixed before any other issues get fixed. I'm just surprised that this update passed their QA process.
Okay. Google did *NOT* stop the OTA. Mine received it and now: Everything washed out, brightness +200% like.
Well done.
I'm having the same problem with the washed out video. This is ashame. I actually just went out and purchased the nexus player yesterday because of Android M and it allowing mpeg2 hardware decoding. I installed the plex and homerun apps and noticed the washed out. I though ny eyes were playing tricks on me and stumbled onto this forum. Sure enough. Same problem. I also noticed that KODI did not suffer the same problem. Its steange. I wonder if an mx player or vcl might fix the issue. I have. ot tried the homerun addon within KODI yet but will try it tonight

HDHomerun within kodi looks a lot smoother to me. I can't tell if it's washed out or not as I'm viewing on a very old LCD monitor where everything is washed out and the motion blur is like GTA Vice City. But the VIEW app and w/in Live Channels the video stream looks a bit blocky, almsot not smooth and not crisp. WMC provided a much smoother picture for Live TV. Even w/in Kodi it looks fine. Not sure what's going on. It looked absolutely fine on Andriod M preview.
Yes, no doubt that the picture looks washed out via the TV Channels app. Comparing between Kodi and the TV Channels app, it is clear the picture in the TV Channels app has a huge brightness boost. I'm watching the ALCS tonight as my point of reference.
will certainly not upgrade mine, until I hear that this is resolved. Thanks for highlighting this (bad pun intended).
Can you prevent the player from auto-updating?
I was expecting Google to stop the OTA rollout, which is staged for exactly those reasons: in order to prevent *everybody* from receiving an OTA that turns out to be buggy. But they didn't do that; I received my update automatically after the problem was already known. Ridiculous.
Yep, video black levels are off on all Google-related apps: Play Movies, Youtube, Live Channels, and when casting from any app or casting screen. Currently all are unusable to me. Kodi and other apps with their own video codecs are fine, though.
It's so painfully bad that (yet again) I don't understand how Google engineers could have let this one slip through testing. It takes literally 30 seconds to notice the problem. What's the point of an achingly slow staged rollout if they don't actually fix these things?
Experiencing the issue here as well. What a pain.
I called Google about this and could not make the rep understand the issue. He kept thinking the video was in black and whtie or something. I called ASUS and they wanted me to send it in for service. I told them it was a software issue and that I'm not wasting my time sending it in. I have 3 units all exhibiting the same behavior so they should be able to figure this out using any unit they have in the lab.
have the same issue. Whenever an app uses HW accel. the blacklevels are off by a lot. I can replicate a similar behaviour on Media Player Classic with switching output range from 0-255 to 16-235. Searching for that google gives me something with RGB full and RGB limited. Not sure why this is happening but for the nexus player is horrible as video apps like netflix are unwatchable.
So it seems Menues are RGB full and HW video playback at RGB Limited
I can't believe we are still forced to put up with this. This is a simple (highly annoying) issue which should be easy to fix for Google. Does anyone have any news whether they're planning to ship a fix anytime soon?
No fix for this annoyance yet. There's also a forum under Google with people complaining about the same issue. Here's the link https://productforums.google.com/forum/m/#!topic/nexus/B9w14NuBv5U
