Engadget Hands On - Nexus 6 General

Engadget Hands On.
As for the camera:
Speaking of photos, the Nexus 6 packs an improved 13-megapixel sensor that - in all honesty - seems to run circles around the camera the Moto X got. Motorola's dead-simple camera interface was nowhere to be found, though, leaving the stock Google Camera app in control. Truth be told, we didn't miss it all that much -- what really matters is that the Nexus 6 doesn't suck at taking photos. Considering the luck the Nexus family has had with cameras, you should be very, very excited.

Yep. I'm not worried about the screen anymore. All reviews say the speakers are good too, but I want to hear them!

No one! has talked about the speakers yet..... Surprised myself, and make me think they might be just average

A pair of average front facing stereo speakers is an upgrade from a single rear facing speaker of any kind.

I second this. It would hopefully be the same as or better than what the MotoX has.

[Q] Does camera really sucks ?

Hi,
so i'm looking for any information about Nexus 4, as i'm trying to get one, but i see in some posts that the camera sucks... I also check this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2039553 and i would know if anyone could post a pic before/after the mod. Just to see what is the real pic quality.
Thanks !
A lot more noise compared to gf s3

Sucks is a pretty strong word. There are plenty of sample pics in the N4 forums so do a search or simply look through the threads in General.
There is a lot of noise in low light... but this is common with tiny sensors. In good light it is capable of very good photos, but saturation and sharpening are a bit laid back. As an experienced photographer I actually prefer this as opposed to other cameras that pump these up by default. Always easier to add then to subtract in post.
Compared to the best phoneCam out there (iPhone), the weakest link is the lens. It is exceptionally prone to flare, and resolution tends to fall off steeply in the corners and there is not alot you can do with these in post. All in all I think it is a pretty good camera for a phone, and if you know what you're doing you will get good shots.
I would just say it's mediocre. It's okay in good light but is worthless in low light conditions.

Coming from a S3, I'm not disappointed.
Coming from a Galaxy Nexus the camera is great.
Coming from a N8, heavily disappointed.
Yah, terrible comparison, I know.
My s3 did have a better camera but I wouldn't say it sucks I still like it a lot and it gets the job done. The only thing I don't like is it keeps auto focusing even if I'm holding it still i prefer to just hold the center blue button to focus and take a picture

its not as good as the gs2 either. there is a lot of noise, even in daylight. hdr is a must for low light pics. the imagine software in barebones android leaves a lot to be desired.

it really does, it creates alot of noise. i had an ipod touch 4g before this and that camera sucked so i thought this would be a huge upgrade, but it really not. i also bought an ipod touch 5g and the 5g's camera is better than the nexus

I do notice the noise in the sky, I just choose not to care. It's a phone, after all Also it was approaching sunset, wasn't very vibrant anymore to begin with. Sure as hell beats the camera on the Galaxy Nexus.

Coming from a htc sensation, same quality. 10% worse maybe. Panorama is rubbish compared to the sensation though.
my Nexus S with 5MP did a better job
Yep, camera isn't good,. Video too. Focus is dodgy on both and the microphones and sound quality on video is ****. The video and audio bit rate is way too low.
Very disappointed coming from a s2.
In fact once the s4 comes out I'm going straight back to Samsung .. Even if it means I don't get the latest android versions.
The n4 is slick but that's about it. Lets face it, it's heavy and quite thick, battery is crap, camera and sound quality is crap, the build quality is questionable.. Mine creaks above the volume and the buttons are loose, it's fragile has no SD card, has no removable battery.
Now the hype has gone its meh.

[VIDEO] HTC One vs Galaxy S4 (in car footage test, front and rear video)

Alright, well here's the conditions to the best that I can remember.
Focus not locked. Didn't see an option for that in the Galaxy S4 menu. Galaxy S4 software based stabilization was not turned on. Anyone want a redo with it on? Hardware stabilization was on for the HTC One.
Also have the Optimus G Pro, Note 2, and iPhone 5 available for tests if requested.
Front facing camera vs rear. Thoughts?
EDIT:
Software stabilization turned on for the GS4. Does anyone know if this actually use pan and zooming to stabilize the image? I'm guessing it does and there is no other way to combat shake.
EDIT:
On my trip to Colorado I added a low light test. I was pretty drowsy. Just woke up from a rest stop nap!
EDIT:
Tried to let the HTC One redeem itself in the audio department. No cases and subject (me) is in front of the camera. No bouncing the sound off of a windshield. It is definitely quiet than the S4, but turn up the volume and let me know what you think.
Seems like the s4 audio sounds better. The HTC one audio sounds echo-ey. As far as the video, they look similar in quality but the viewing angle is wider on the one. I think I prefer the zoomed in on the s4.
Man, I keep going back and forth on these two phones

The One video seems more color accurate and the OIS really stands out when mounted in a car like this, and obviously has a wider FoV. But the S4 has much better audio recording quality (the One had some weird occasional popping going on too).
As far as front facing cameras, again the One has a wide FoV, but the color seems better on the S4's. Whether or not the One is color accurate on the front facing cam, the S4's just plain looks better.
Here's hoping HTC has a firmware update to address the audio quality coming, because if they fix that then the One takes this victory.

If you do a youtube search for HTC One Concert you will find a lot of really great audio recordings by the HTC One. I don't know why it was inferior in the car but I've heard other recordings with the HTC One where the audio sounded great. My own recordings with this phone sound much better than this video.

In the comments on the video he says the holder it's in is blocking the rear mic. That's why the audio is bad on the ONE no way to fix a huge obstruction like a holder no matter how good the mic is.
I've done three tests. Do you think it's just the output levels? Seems pretty strange.
I didn't see any options and everything is being processed in the same fashion.

Actually the holder had a very narrow grip. I was noting that if the audio was directed toward the lens it might sound better. Instead in these tests there is a big ole windshield.
I'll figure something out!
Any suggestions are welcome.

The mic on the HTC one is on the back, right next to the camera. The sound from the HTC One is echo'ed because it is actually being bounced off the windshield.
The mic on the S4 is on the bottom near the charging port I believe.
Great comparison video. The S4 seems much sharper and has better color.
Can you please do one in low-light? (night time driving) Would love it.

The pictures are poor. You're gonna have some good, some bad, but overall the camera is poor. Especially when zooming at all.
The camera app itself is snappy and it'll focus fast, but this ultra pixel with 4mp just isn't gonna get it. There is 2 year old technology cranking out better, more consistent pictures.

Ive seen a couple short hands on reviews that say the M8 pics are no better than the M7. The only thing the M8 has going for it in the camera department is speed and that new refocusing feature....which one reviewer said doesnt really work that well. Hmmm

Yeah, um, those Flickr photos look more than acceptable for me. I don't need the best camera if I'm getting the best screen, audio quality, and experience that the M8 will surely offer as the M7 did. The camera is literally secondary (or, well, further than that) than all of those areas and, even then, it's not really bad at all.

In all seriousness, when it comes down to cutting costs on a smartphone design, camera would be the first thing on my list too. Would you rather it be made of cheap plastic, not have front facing speakers or have a smaller battery?
I'd take superior hardware/build over a great camera any day. I know we want it all, but it seems like we just can't have it all. At least not til the M9.

IMAG0065 that night time pic...looks really really really bad. but for the most part its not bad. Matter of fact all the night time ones are really bad towards the end .
In complete and utter seriousness guys (not being a fanboy either) I was MORE than pleased with the camera on the M7. That was my primary concern that I debated over for months before getting the M7 - giving up my iPhone 5 which took awesome pics was a difficult choice. Hands down, I'm more than excited to get back to Android (had to go back to my iPhone 5 due to selling my M7). The true wide angle 16:9 is so awesome and the pics were great. Overall, I felt like I was able to regularly capture more accurate color representations with the M7. Low light was pretty great too.
I will say, there were a few times where I was left wishing I could crop to a larger size and retain image quality. However, for me personally, it wasn't a big enough issue for me to ditch the phone, as I don't need to do that often enough. If you're someone who is perpetually cropping, this probably isn't going to work for you.
Also, I used to have an album of pics I took on my phone to show people when they'd play with it. I received soooo many compliments on the pics I took and more people saying "This phone has such an amazing camera" never knowing it was only 1/2 the MP's as their phones.
I understand and agree with the major drawbacks of it, however, as an overall quick shooter to the ability to take your time and change settings to get an optimal pic, it blew me away quite a few times. That's more than I could ever say about my iPhone.
Addition: there was a thread I saw with M7 vs. M8 photos and the colors looked quite a bit better and more crisp on the M8. I'm excited to see what I can do with it.
although the MP is disappointing, the strengths of the phone outweigh a blunder such as that I think. It's not like the camera is crap, it's just average for current times. We just had higher expectations as we should have especially compared to last year's. I would say the camera is "adequate"

The turbos camera is terrible as are all Motorola cameras. I love moto though so I also have an iPhone 6 for special events. I agree that of the OEMS moto just doesn't do the best cameras. But, I think of the moto phones, the turbo is the best among them. It's definitely not the greatest camera. But not the worst either. I get some pretty good shots. Then I get some duds.
A better camera does a pretty good job of improving the turbos camera. Adjusting what type of focus it uses seems to help a lot

So... How about them front facing stereo speakers!

I see tons of threads on a ton of topics, everyone interested in fast charging, fast updates, fingerprints, Type C USB ports, but is anyone add excited as me to have some front facing stereo speakers?
After playing with an HTC One a few years ago I've wanted a phone with them so bad, but couldn't go back to HTC after the Rezound.
Imagine, no more cupping your hands around one side or the other to try to make the sound come to the front. Stereo sound instead of in mumbled mono mess out of one speaker.
Come on, somebody else has to be excited about this right!
Post any hands on's you can find about them talking about the stereo speaker quality or your personal experience with Front Facing Speakers on a phone.
I think a lot of us are coming from the Nexus 6, which also had front facing stereo speakers. After having them, there's no way I could go back to a rear facing speaker.
I have a Nexus 6 and a HTC M8 as backup.. IMO the Nexus 6, after switching to a custom ROM, delivers better sound..
If the Nexus 6p is the same or better, I'm more than happy..
Having just got my lg g3 I was so in love I skipped the Nexus 6. Lucky bastard. Lol
Sent from my VS985 4G using Tapatalk
I just hope the Nexus 6P does not have the normalizing audio problem that the Nexus 6 has... If so those nice front facing speakers won't mean squat.
After having a nexus 6 and a moto x pure(style 2015 - returned), I hope the same thing as the poster above. However, I will say that the issue with the pure is 100% a normalization and gain issue. In the pure you get this bad crackle at the end from the gain being set too high. I think this was done on motorola's side. Luckily with the dev on this phone I'm almost certain that defect will be non-existent or at lease fixable thanks to xda devs and others around the world.
Maybe I'm in the minority here, but I don't care.
I would actually prefer the speakers on the edge to leave the face clean and reduce the overall size.

I returned a X Pure as well but mine had 0 speaker issues. The front facing speakers were AMAZING! So amazing that I overlooked them after the first few hours and it just felt like that's how all phone speakers are to be configured LOL. It sounded so good that I hardly used my Galaxy Tab S and consumed most of my media on the X Pure because I didn't need to use headphones and they sounded so good just playing out, so I'm hoping the 6P at least equals this. This also makes your ringtones sound really good if you choose an MP3 but notifications can be quite loud if you don't configure their volume adequately.

I think they are nice but if I'm listening to something it's usually on my Bluetooth speaker regardless. So nice but it's not a big deal for me.
Least important feature on the phone. Nothing is more annoying than some schrute on the train watching something on his phone with his front facing speakers blasting. Nobody wants to listen to your stuff. I'll stick with headphones personally. Sound is light years better and I'm not annoying anyone.
