The pictures are poor. You're gonna have some good, some bad, but overall the camera is poor. Especially when zooming at all.
The camera app itself is snappy and it'll focus fast, but this ultra pixel with 4mp just isn't gonna get it. There is 2 year old technology cranking out better, more consistent pictures.

He's been bashing the M8 all day. Camera is decent just not enough megapixels for his liking.
Tell me that the photos from Engadget are fake!
They look horrible
Ive seen a couple short hands on reviews that say the M8 pics are no better than the M7. The only thing the M8 has going for it in the camera department is speed and that new refocusing feature....which one reviewer said doesnt really work that well. Hmmm
They were over-compressed and they've reposted the originals at http://www.flickr.com/photos/phonewisdom/sets/72157642913906483/

Yeah, um, those Flickr photos look more than acceptable for me. I don't need the best camera if I'm getting the best screen, audio quality, and experience that the M8 will surely offer as the M7 did. The camera is literally secondary (or, well, further than that) than all of those areas and, even then, it's not really bad at all.

NO.
NOT ENOUGH MEGAPIXELS.

In all seriousness, when it comes down to cutting costs on a smartphone design, camera would be the first thing on my list too. Would you rather it be made of cheap plastic, not have front facing speakers or have a smaller battery?
I'd take superior hardware/build over a great camera any day. I know we want it all, but it seems like we just can't have it all. At least not til the M9.

IMAG0065 that night time pic...looks really really really bad. but for the most part its not bad. Matter of fact all the night time ones are really bad towards the end .
In complete and utter seriousness guys (not being a fanboy either) I was MORE than pleased with the camera on the M7. That was my primary concern that I debated over for months before getting the M7 - giving up my iPhone 5 which took awesome pics was a difficult choice. Hands down, I'm more than excited to get back to Android (had to go back to my iPhone 5 due to selling my M7). The true wide angle 16:9 is so awesome and the pics were great. Overall, I felt like I was able to regularly capture more accurate color representations with the M7. Low light was pretty great too.
I will say, there were a few times where I was left wishing I could crop to a larger size and retain image quality. However, for me personally, it wasn't a big enough issue for me to ditch the phone, as I don't need to do that often enough. If you're someone who is perpetually cropping, this probably isn't going to work for you.
Also, I used to have an album of pics I took on my phone to show people when they'd play with it. I received soooo many compliments on the pics I took and more people saying "This phone has such an amazing camera" never knowing it was only 1/2 the MP's as their phones.
I understand and agree with the major drawbacks of it, however, as an overall quick shooter to the ability to take your time and change settings to get an optimal pic, it blew me away quite a few times. That's more than I could ever say about my iPhone.
Addition: there was a thread I saw with M7 vs. M8 photos and the colors looked quite a bit better and more crisp on the M8. I'm excited to see what I can do with it.
although the MP is disappointing, the strengths of the phone outweigh a blunder such as that I think. It's not like the camera is crap, it's just average for current times. We just had higher expectations as we should have especially compared to last year's. I would say the camera is "adequate"

I don't think camera on the tablet is necessary so I didn't regard the resolution of the camera when buying. When I go back an take some photos, I think that it is 1.3MP... and now you tell me that it is 5MP, then I think that is software problem, cause my i9000 also takes these kind of photos with poorly configured camera App...
Here are a couple I have taken just now in decent lighting. Ill post some from outside tomorrow.

Not that I use the camera a lot but I don't think it's horrible by any means. Didn't really use any effort to get a pic, just picked up my tablet from the couch and took em. It's no dedicated camera but in a pinch it's pretty good.

i m not satisfied with the photo quality. It feels like photo has been taken by a 0.1 Mega pixel camera.
Come on Acer you can do better
I'm not sure what all the fuss is about? I've taken several pictures as well and I have no complaints. As a matter of fact, I was shocked by the quality that I was getting from the camera while taking photos and video.
Not even the iPad 2 takes great photos. Use your phone or don't use the tablet. Personally, I'm so pleased with the Acer. It's not the best but I think I got my money's worth.
Only thing left is HD video. I want that update pronto!

I came from the s2(et4g) which had an amazing camera. Anyone else find the camera quality on still photos kinda poor on this phone?? I know video is awesome, especially with the video bitrate hack, but still photos do not come out to good. Front or rear camera. Post your findings. Hopefully its just software related
Mine have been pretty stellar.
I am not impressed at all with the camera, the one X is taking better pic imo
A little bummed out about that
the camera on mine is just terrible. Backlit CMOS sensor my a$$.
The camera is better than the s2 but does not compare to the htc one s/x.
I'm coming from a GNex and the quality on the GS3 is amazing compared to the GNex, and much better than the GS2, IMO. Probably a dumb question, but have you made sure there aren't any smudges or anything like that on the camera lenses? I know of mine gets a little finger print or a smudge the quality goes to balls until I clean it up.

My sgs3 is taking much better pix than my sgs2 and HTC evo I played with. HTC has too much noise even in bright condition. And did a comparison picture with both and mine was no noise, and sharp. HTC was opposite. I have firmware zd

Sucks is a pretty strong word. There are plenty of sample pics in the N4 forums so do a search or simply look through the threads in General.
There is a lot of noise in low light... but this is common with tiny sensors. In good light it is capable of very good photos, but saturation and sharpening are a bit laid back. As an experienced photographer I actually prefer this as opposed to other cameras that pump these up by default. Always easier to add then to subtract in post.
Compared to the best phoneCam out there (iPhone), the weakest link is the lens. It is exceptionally prone to flare, and resolution tends to fall off steeply in the corners and there is not alot you can do with these in post. All in all I think it is a pretty good camera for a phone, and if you know what you're doing you will get good shots.
I would just say it's mediocre. It's okay in good light but is worthless in low light conditions.

Coming from a S3, I'm not disappointed.
Coming from a Galaxy Nexus the camera is great.
Coming from a N8, heavily disappointed.
Yah, terrible comparison, I know.
My s3 did have a better camera but I wouldn't say it sucks I still like it a lot and it gets the job done. The only thing I don't like is it keeps auto focusing even if I'm holding it still i prefer to just hold the center blue button to focus and take a picture

Coming from a htc sensation, same quality. 10% worse maybe. Panorama is rubbish compared to the sensation though.
my Nexus S with 5MP did a better job
Yep, camera isn't good,. Video too. Focus is dodgy on both and the microphones and sound quality on video is ****. The video and audio bit rate is way too low.
Very disappointed coming from a s2.
In fact once the s4 comes out I'm going straight back to Samsung .. Even if it means I don't get the latest android versions.
The n4 is slick but that's about it. Lets face it, it's heavy and quite thick, battery is crap, camera and sound quality is crap, the build quality is questionable.. Mine creaks above the volume and the buttons are loose, it's fragile has no SD card, has no removable battery.
Now the hype has gone its meh.
Well, HTC gave the One to professional photographers and the outcome was those great images! What do you think?

saw those, if im honest, i dont think theyre overly impressive, the feather is nice though
but its impossible to tell if theyre "good" or not without knowing the conditions they were shot in.
im assuming they were all shot in fairly low light with no flash based on the background, in which case yea, the colours are impressive - im surprised HTC didn't say that though
lack of detail is clear though even when full screen on computer
I agree.. Some people still have a doubt about this camera, but its taking great images. I have my own Canon camera when going on trips or travel. But this camera is great enough for my daily use.

You're over thinking it too much in my opinion. Does it really matter what was the setting or conditions they were taken in? Not everyone cares about taking a perfect photo but one that looks appealing to the person taking it.
I'm pretty sure those pictures were taken in the perfect setting and conditions and the look great in my opinion. That tells me that some one with not such great conditions and not a professional will be able to take very descent photos.

how am i overthinking it?
in good light, my 2 year old htc incredible S would take more detailed pictures than those - like i said, even if you look at them full screen on an HD monitor, the quality is poor
but again, like i said - the light looks like it wasn't good, in which case yes they are pretty impressive, but without knowing the conditions they were taken in it is impossible to know
I think they are great for a phone! I would rather have better low light pictures than bigger images. They only thing I want HTC fix is exposure in both pictures and videos. It seems some conditions pictures get over/under exposed and in videos the exposure auto adjust is too slow.

here's a photo i took very quickly on my incredible S - the detail is far greater than the marbles, for example.
yes, the light is very good in my photo, but the point im trying to make is that the htc photos aren't very good IMO unless you consider they were taken in very low light - but they didnt say they were.... and most people will probably click the full size image and think the same thing as me, and that is that they are really lacking in detail
in other words, as far as photos that "showcase" the overall quality of the One camera go, those ones are poor representations

totally agree
but HTC didn't say "here are some photos taken by professional photographers in very low light, look how great the colours are!"
to those that don't know any better, those are just "photos taken by professional photographers" - and to those people, they probably don't look very good.
i know they're relatively good, because i can see the lighting is poor - most of the people who saw HTCs post won't know that
You people are crazy of you don't think those pictures take with the one aren't good.
What is wrong with you? For one, its a phone camera, not a dlsr. If you want amazing pictures, then spend your hard earned money on that. Who knows, maybe you have a future as a professional photographer, lol!
And DJ, don't you have an HTC one? If so, you get quite defensive in the s4 forums, yet here you are in the One forums doing the same thing.
Sent from a galaxy far away!
The most important photo is actually the first One
HTC is using the fastest shutter time in the industry, if HTC went ahead and used long exposure times instead, the quality will be multiplied
but for a mobile device in your pocket this shutter speed is essential you can grab anything without worrying about blurring it (hint Lumia 920)
the fact that ZOE start buffering action before you even press the shutter is a testament how everyone is underestimating this ability
here is another example of the shutter speed (the high contrast is because I have auto enhanced it with my One X)
Those shots are sadly not real world as it is easy to see they have been taken with professional lighting rigs. (multiple light sources, none from the direction of the lense). They are impressive but I prefer real people's examples.

The detail in the pictures is poor. I don't care what anyone says, I can see that with MY eyes. The colours in the pictures is good, I can see that with MY eyes. With my eyes I can also see that yes there is professional lighting in these photos, so it is stupid of HTC to provide these photos as a showcase to Joe Public - no one else will shoot in those conditions.
Yea, I'm about to get my One back, and I loved it while I had it, and will love it when I get it back; that doesn't stop me from being impartial with regards to the One / GS4 debate.

You have extremely high standards for a camera on....a phone. Ultra pixel or not, it is still just a camera....on a phone.
Which IMO does quite well actually. I mean I don't think many of us on here are professional photographer's, so its in the end a regular persons opinion.
Everyone pretends to be an expert though....
And I am sorry you get your pants rustled pretty good in that huge thread you have going over there in the s4 thread. You basically back whatever you can in the One, yet somehow do opposite on this thread about the One.
I don't get it and have a hard time taking someone seriously when you are so wishy-washy.

What's hard to understand?
Some people over there make stupid claims about the One, and I am quick to set them straight. Likewise here some people are so blinded by fanboyism they can't admit there is anything to improve upon in the One.
Both types annoy me equally.
I don't know what you are trying to accuse me of here, being impartial? Lol... Although I will admit that yes it can be a rare sight on the forums...
Also please tell me at what point did I say the One wasn't a good camera?
I commented on those photos, stating that I didn't think they were a very good marketing tool, as personally I don't think they are overly good. Do you have a problem with that statement?
Really not sure what you're trying to accomplish here?

I will say one thing.
HTC One will and it make pictures around 600kb - 1.3mb.
Those photos have 2.5MB (even 13mpx cameras with no comprassion hardly get this value).
So people, those photos are not fake, but also not HTC One photos.
Move on...
The declared megapixels of this camera are 4MP, the declared reason is bucking the megapixel race, the declared usage is social media, the promised compensation is the low MP are good low light performance which delivers as well as fast shutter speed
There are no surprises about the lack of detail
Its like agonizing that a certain car can only do its stated HP

Impressive, just something else that justifies me spending $900 :-$

13 Megapixels vs the benefits of the Ultra Pixel technology? I'll go with Ultra Pixel thank you.

What was the title of that Sammy fanboy thread 'is this all the HTC One camera can do?'
Looks good enough to me.

Because its a panorama image
Its a nice scene, but thats what the camera excels at, scenes. If you want to use the camera to capture the details of an event its not so good.

If the "event" is indoors or some other area that is dimly lit, the HTC is probably gonna do a better job than other higher pixel'd phone cams
Maybe, that's not always true either. It's useless at sporting events unless you just want to capture the atmosphere rather than actual action.

Not sure I'd be using a phone to document a sporting event...

Thousands also use digital zoom, it doesn't make it right.
Excuses. I love the phone, but the camera is very picky about what it can do and when, personally I think its a bad balance. The megapixel myth is true, but this camera isnt good enough to prove it.

Good for you?
It has gotten a perfect picture the first time, every time for me. I am so glad that I no longer have to worry about turning on lights in my normally dark house. Maybe your phone needs a usermod? I don't need the 13mp to text a picture or post something to facebook. If I'm taking a photo I care about I'll use a real camera.
Very nice.
Oh how I can't wait for another "this camera sucks because it's not like my iPhone" thread to start rolling.
In all seriousness, this camera has consistently produced images of quality from a phone. I've printed some of them already in 4x6 and 5x7. They looked fabulous. That's damn good enough for me. :good:
I dont really take pictures in my house, I take them when out and about. Its just not got the resolution to be able to resolve objects more than 50ft away in any detail. As I said it takes nice 'scenes', but for example, at a zoo its useless, because animal invariably aren't close to you. Its useless at motor sport events because it cant resolve the cars unless you are very close to them. I took a few shot at a recent event with the One, and a few with the Nexus 10 as a comparison, and it was the N10 that gave me the best single shot!
It does work as a social media camera, which is I suppose what HTC said all along, but lets not be fanboys here, it has big limitations. Most of the shots on this site that are showing off its abilities are macros, which are nice, but frankly any phone can do that, and I was taking better ones with my N95!

I assure you I'm not being a fanboy.
Not the best but what I use to take real pictures. You know, like ones at the zoo. Maybe you should pick something like this up if you want to shoot events.

Like most people I just want a simple point and shoot device, i dont care enough or need a $600 camera. However I do want one that takes pictures that are worthwhile having.
I wouldn't mind it only being as good as an average phone for these type of shots, but the fact that its worse than a tablet, or even an old phone is inexcusable. The fact is pretty much every 8MP camera phone takes better shots in these situations.
