Poll: Are you satisfied with the external speakers?

Are you satisfied with the external speakers on the Desire HD?
Everyone please answer the poll so we can get an accurate idea of what Desire HD users think about the external speakers.

I've read so many post on how bad their speaker is, but I must say, either I have bad ears, or I'm lucky, and got one with a great speaker. No problem making it loud enough, and I can even make it too loud. All without any crackling, or distortion. I love it!

I guess it may be a 1st batch issue then. If your speakers really are good it would mean that all our speakers are faulty. If this is the case it's a warranty issue, so we could get it fixed.
Could you make a video of the sound, preferably comparing it to another phone?

I can hardly wait!

I have a DHD from the first batch and the external speaker sound is not loud enough (even on max.) and the sound quality is poor.

Not happy.
I'm getting similar sound quality from an over 2 year old TouchPro.

Contacted HTC support and all they advised was to remove battery reboot and check volume was set to maximum.
Told them that had been done - no reply since...........

Already posted in the other thread, but considering I registered here just to complain about this speaker, I figured why not post again here
Speaker reminds me of an old Nokia that I sent back within the first week of receiving it. Except it's worse. Tinny and crackly. HTC can do far better. I'm still undecided as to whether I'll keep the phone as a result. I've ordered a bluetooth headset just to deal with this issue, but now I read that it's having problems with the BT headsets too!

can't you use DSPmanager and increase the volume of the loud speaker? We have full root after all.

I haven't tried that, but I have tried PowerAmp music player to boost music.
The result was as I expected: hardly any increase in volume, at the expense of crackly distorted bad sound quality - worse than it was at "normal" levels.

The strange thing is this:
Some apps sounds louder and some is hard to hear.
Have all volume sliders at max.
An MP3 used as alarm sounds higher then one played trough the mediaplayer.
Isnt this strange?

I have been missing calls at work so i bought a Samsung Bluetooth speaker BS300. It has just landed today. It is small and thin and also the sound quality is excellent and loud. I am waiting for the battery now to charge and i will leave a few comments later when i have made and received a few calls with it

I found the speaker was quite poor and sold the phone. Not just because of the speaker, was more that I just didn't feel it was a significant upgrade over the normal Desire.
Anyway, before I sold the DHD I compared the sound against my Desire, a Samsung i8910 and a Nokia N95. Even the old Nokia sounded better than both HTC phones and the Samsung just blew everything away.
I understand there's a lot of sound technology in the phone, but it only works if using headphones. Speaker is just a token affair as far as I'm concerned.

Just to make sure,
I hope there are no complaints related with the quality of the sound with a good set of headphones like Sennheisser or something like that, right?

I don't have a good video camera, and nobody has one to lend me. I tried several phones that have video, but they all come out bad. I'm working on it. If I can't find one this week, I'm just going to buy one. I can always use it for other stuff. Don't worry I didn't forget about it.

Thanks for taking the effort, as this could be a major development.
If your speaker really is very good, we can show this to HTC, and they will have to say that this is a warranty issue.
Personally I do really hope it is, because like london_euphoria said: the rest of the phone is great, it's only the external speaker that is a drawback.

Agree. That's why I want to make sure it's a recording of the true quality, not a choppy cell phone recording. Bare with me. I should have it up this week.

How Loud is the Speaker?

Hi. I haven't received my nexus yet, so I'm wondering how loud the speaker on the back of the phone is in comparison to phones such as the sgs3. I got an Inc s atm, so I'm sure the LG couldn't be any worse HTC have the worst speakers...

Cant' comment on it compared to SGS3 but compare to my galaxy nexus it is a big improvement in sound level and bass

I can't compare to the SGS3, but compared to my HTC vivid, the speaker on this is LOUD! So much so, on the vivid, my settings for volume were maxed and with the N4, they're a little over half way up.

well GN speaker was fine, just needed to be tuned up. it was fixed eventually in a OTA. software bug, wasn't hardware related.
speaker won't be any problems on the N4.

I just did a side by side comparison, the s3 speaker is slightly louder but a lot more clear sounding than the nexus 4.

I am hoping that the nexus 4 is comparable to the s3 in loudness,love being able to listen to podcasts while taking a shower without resorting to using an external speaker.Putting the phone in a box works wonders wonders too when wanting to do this.why people listen to music with thier phones speaker is just madness to me.After a few minutes of a song i really miss the low end and go back to podcasts or just turn it off. I must say that the S3 speaker is quite good even for music and most of the spectrum of the music is audible.It is such a step up in loudness from the S2.

Alternatively you can try Volume+ which is a app that worked for me on the Galaxy Nexus. It should work on 4.2 as it did on my GN.
Give it a try and see whether or not it actually boosts your music (play it in background and boost it, see if volume goes up).

Thanks for that. As long as it's not too bad, I don't mind. The s3 has quite a good speaker for a smartphone, I think. For some reason phone manufacturers have forgotten that the speaker is a very important part to the phone, and have started putting the worst speakers on phones.

It's not for music, I like a loud speaker so I can actually hear my phone ringing, and so I can hear things such as videos clearly. Of course, sometimes for music playback if I want to hear a new song or show someone a song.

Compared to the SG3 I think you get better quality sound on the SG3. The nexus 4 is loud but it depends on the quality of the sound file, the only thing I'm finding really annoying about the nexus 4 is how weak the vibrate motor is.. I have missed a lot of notifications because of this, I'm using franco kernel and you can increase the vibrate setting but I still find it lacking at least for me.

I play in a band....When I record us playing live, or other bands, it doesn't distort, but there is a horrible clipping noise that sounds like a "quack" or "quirk" noise when the audio threshold is breached. It was like this on MM and I was hoping Nougat would be better, but there is no change.
On my last 5 phones, this NEVER happened (Nexus 6p, Moto X Pure, Galaxy S7 Edge, S6, and HTC One M9). Actually, I haven't really had this problem since 2013. My other band members iPhones are perfectly clear as well.... But my recordings are virtually useless due to this horrible noise every few seconds. Regular, everyday stuff is fine - it's just loud band settings.
Anyone know of anything that might help? I'm on the stock ROM, but rooted if I need to change anything?

The bass is completely on the opposite side of the stage, about 25 feet away in this video. We didn't use subs at this gig, and my phone was about 5 feet behind the main speakers sitting on a towel on a concrete floor.
To me, it doesn't appear to be the bass.. It's when the drummer is hitting the snare, which is opposite of when the bass is usually hitting. The snare is usually the loudest thing on the stage.
I've tried recording at every show since I've had my phone around August or September (23 - 25 shows)....I've had it at all different points behind the speakers, in front of the speakers, on the bass side, behind everything, in peoples hands..... ect... It just doesn't like loud music.
I was wondering if there was a way to up the sensitivity of the mic, or DB where it is rated?
I've been recording my band/s for the past 7 or 8 years (ever since the iPhone 4s days). Had some that distorted bad, but usually I could tell it was the bass. But ever since I had my first HTC M7, about 2013, I haven't had any issues until now with the A7.

Did you find any solution? I go to live shows a lot, and sometimes I like to record one or two songs, I used to have Motorola g4 plus and the audio was OK, but I just bought the g5 plus and the audio is totally garbage! :crying:

No, but I haven't tried for a few weeks - since updating to 7.1.1, but it was this way on 7.0, so I don't foresee it any better.
My friends with iPhones (6-7) and Galaxy S6/S7's all sound fine.... Mine doesn't when recording something at high volume.

I almost thought about trading for a LG v20 (I found on Craigslist) or upgrading to the S8 when it's out, but I really like this phone. I'm going to try a different camera or something?

I can say I don't have this problem, I have been into some loud environments and even recorded a Big Band and the sound was fine; probably I will go tonight to a club or something and can test as well, but as for the tests I have done before regarding this topic, I haven't found any issue. My device is A2017G.

Hmmmm, this is the 2nd Axon 7 I've had - and both had the same issue. Maybe it's just louder behind the speakers?
I may try setting it out in front, 10 or 20 feet back and see how that turns out? It still irritates me a little, because my other phones didn't do this when I'd record the same way and place. Even going back 4 or 5 years ago to my HTC M7.

Just as I promised, I recorded a video yesterday night in a loud environment; I was no more than 1-2 from one of the speakers, and I think the quality is pretty decent:

P.D.: The video seems a little blurry, but I didn't even focus anything, I just grabbed the phone out and start to record to test the audio and I didn't care about image quality.

I've recorded live bands and the sound has been fine, far better than on any previous phone, but I haven't tried with version 7.

Well, I recorded more video of my band this weekend. I believe the issue comes form the side of the stage I'm on required the microphone to point "towards" the stage, instead of away.....So it's extra sensitive. I recorded half a song with it one way, flipped it over and finished out the song. The half with the mic pointed away only clipped one time. The half with it pointed towards us, clipped about ever time my drummer hit the snare.
Still not as clear as my drummers wife and her S7, but livable now.
I also read you can put scotch tape over the mic and it'll help too?

[UPDATE]
Mid- last week, I made the switch from stock, to LOs.... Just tested the recording, and the problems I was experiencing in stock, with clipping, don't exist in LOs... Not sure why, but they're all gone!
I recorded several songs tonight, at a louder volume, with no clipping at all.

Proper etiquette aside (hint: don't use speakerphone while doing your "business" in a public bathroom), rate this thread to express how you think the Samsung Galaxy Note 8's speakerphone performs. A higher rating indicates that you love it: it's loud and it's clear.

Had some time with note 8 display unit in Samsung store. I liked everything, but the external speaker. It is too high pitched, making listening to it a discomfort. I had the same issue with Note 7.
Today will go there again to double check. So far, this is the only thing holding me from preordering this phone

I really miss the nexus 6p speakers.

For me, note 5 speaker was the best of all note phones. It was loud and had much more bass

I'm using a 6P right now but will preorder the Note 8 when it will be available in my country.
I'm afraid of the speaker quality on the Note 8 because it's so frickin' good on the 6P.

Had some more time with note 8 display units in Samsung store. I was surprised to find out that equalizer settings were applicable to the external speaker sound. For some reason I had been thinking that those settings are for earphones only.
So I reduced the high frequencies and that's it, the sound became much more better without causing discomfort for the hearing. For those who will find volume level low, you can boost all frequencies and get much louder sound.
Finally I made my pre-order for a black 64 GB unit.

What about the clarity and crispness of sound? Samsung aren't known for.producing good sound even their TVs speakers are poor.
After using Axon 7 and nexus 6p I've got used to good loud clear speakers, this is my major concern with note 8.

For music it's miles away from iPhone 7 (not Plus, I have the "small" one) but not in the good way, it has smaller amount of bass and is more high pitched. I use my phone to play some music in a dinner room or in the bathroom so this is kind of disadvantage on Note 8 side.
Don't have any comparison on calling loudness and clarity but for music... it's shame that Sammy didn't make a stereo setup like Apple did with iPhone 7 which helped a lot.

You're saying you'd be glad to give up your headphone jack for dual speakers?
Honestly, Samsung should've followed Sony, HTC, or other phone companies that enabled speaker output from the earpiece alongside with the main speaker.

Lol hell no, I am not saying this. I am talking about the dual speaker setup you mentioned also.
Absence of jack is different story, maybe even fairy tail of greedy king who wanted to make all customers to buy wireless headphones which are expensive and most of them sh**ty af. Don't worry, that's what I hate about iPhone 7 the most from the start.

Coming from a 6P using Arise, in comparison, the Note 8 speaker is horrible.
Maybe I need to get acclimated to it, but I can hardly hear my alerts and texts as they come in. With notifications volume cranked to 11, switching ringtones in an area where a conversations happening, I really can't hear the tones. It sucks to be honest.
It's not a deal breaker but if I miss to many texts it could be. My 6p speakers are freaking amazing....Almost as amazing as the screen on my Note 8!
The speakers poor quality is absolutely the only thing on this device that I am not happy with

You are right the speaker on this phone gets a thumbs down. But everything else is great. I can live with that.

It's not as bad as I guess I made it out to be but it's not an impressive speaker. However this phone is so bad ass that a little less volume is tolerable. I'm so impressed with everything else on it, I feel like an idiot for complaining that the one speaker isn't as loud as my 6p's 2!
Love my Note8 and happy to have my 6p as a backup!

I remember there was a mod on the LG G5 that would let you use your earpiece as a twitter and you regular bottom speaker as a woofer and it sounded great. I which wi would see something similar on the Note 8.

I think we would need root for mods like that.. I don't want to root... I wish we could do that. It kills me that I was comparing my S8 to my Note 8 yesterday and I then realized how much louder and still clear the S8 was over the Note 8. Now the size of it in my pocket and the dismal speaker loudness are the 2 things making me want to go back to the S8 until the S9.... I've only got 6 days to make my move..... Anyone else know of anything that can be done to boost external volume??

Miss my axon 7 speakers..note 8 is not nearly as loud. But still like the phone overall

Why I AM getting the Pixel 2 XL (coming from a 6P)

I understand we all have our reasoning's for and against. Figured I'd get the ball rolling on the "for" party.
-Camera. We don't have many hands-on reviews yet, but dxomark was a good start. Good to hear the camera quality overall is great. It's amazing what Google's software processing and HDR+ is capable of.
-No headphones jack. I'm actually a fan of this trade off for IP67 certification. Less I have to worry about when my phone gets splashed with water.
-Dual speakers are back. Love my stereo speakers on my 6P
-Snapdragon 835 - Would have liked a newer iteration (possibly an 836 or something) to differentiate our chips compared to the S8 which came out in April (6 months ago). It is what it is though.
-Bluetooth 5.0 - Was a must have for me. I do not own a Smart Watch yet, but I'm hoping this resolves a lot of battery life qualms when BT5.0 compatible watches come out.
The price obviously sucks, but that's what happens when you bring a carrier launching partner into play (Verizon). Google has to give Verizon some sort of incentive to sell the phone. Who knows how much profit Verizon makes off each phone.
I also thought Google would have learned to do a multi-carrier launch. That would have been their best form of advertising. I am on Verizon, but I am still getting the phone through the Google website due to their protection plan being cheaper than going through Verizon+Extended Service Plan.
Why are you getting the Pixel 2 XL?

Your reasons sum up my feelings pretty well. I had a Pixel XL and sold it recently in anticipation of upgrading. I got over half the purchase price back, a fair deal I think. The phone was nice, I liked it a lot. The camera was awesome, without a doubt the best I've used on a phone, better than the last couple digital cameras I've had. Unlimited uploading of full res pics speaks for itself. Bluetooth issues seem to have been resolved recently, had some stuttering early on but fixed now. The speakers will be a big upgrade. The battery life was great, I'm expecting the same with the new model. The monthly updates are obviously a bonus. Development is lacking because of the partitioning but the stock firmware is hard to beat especially with the need for more security and pretty much all your personal info on your phone. For years I've been wondering why it is so hard to make a phone that checks all the boxes. This one won't check all the boxes for everyone, but I think it comes close for me.

I need a good phone camera for work, love front facing speakers, stock android with fast updates. Those are my reasons, plus if the squeezable frame works as advertised, will be a bonus.

LIke you, I'm upgrading from my 6P. While I was interested in the original Pixel, there just wasn't enough to justify upgrading. It wasn't the price either. Had they offered the PXL for $399, I still doubt I'd have bought it. There simply wasn't enough to draw me from my 6P, which has been my favorite Android phone of all time. The P2XL, however, did (at least IMO). I'm not a huge phone camera guy, (If I really need good pictures, I tend to grab my SLR.) but having a good camera that doesn't require a lot of thought, but still takes great pictures and videos is no brainer. OIS+EIS on the P2XL is a huge plus in my book.
But really, the things that sold me are the IP67 rating, the squeezable frame (I use Google Assistant constantly -- and a quicker/easier way to activate it has me all giddy), the always-on display, and fast-charging (even faster than the 6P). In fact, if it had been rumored to have wireless charging, I'd have been mashing the F5 button on the website, so that I could get the pre-order in sooner. As for the headphone jack... Well, to be honest, my 6P's headphone jack has never been used. Not even once. Good riddance, I say... especially if it helps with the IP rating. Having said that, I look forward to BT5.0, and hope that, in the future, it will lead to better-sounding audio. I know that there are no (or at least, practically no) BT5.0 headphones out there, but they'll surely come. I also know that initially, BT5.0 doesn't really do anything to improve audio, but again, I'm sure that will come.
Lastly, the bezels. Am I the only one that already has accidental side-activation issues on my 6P? Moving the touch-sensitive portion of the screen closer to the edges actually sounds like a bad idea to me. Edge to edge sure looks nice, but I've always thought it comes with its share of hassles, which I simply don't need. I rather think the bezels on the P2XL are perfect. The P2, on the other hand... **shudder**.

Same here with the wireless charging. That needs to be a mandatory feature on all phones these days.

I'm also so tempted to get this phone, coming from the 6P. But the price... expensive. I still have to make the decision.
But it really seems a nice phone specs, great software... plus after the 6P I couldn't go back to single speakers. Hard decision.

Google's trade in program is what did it for me. They are offering $400 back for a 32GB 1st Gen Pixel XL. I was on the fence but when I found out how much they are willing to give for the old phones, I decided get the newer version. My battery life is still great but it's definitely starting to decline. I also have a few nicks on the phone but the screen is still in tact and not shattered.
I've never used the 3.5mm jack so personally, I'm glad it's gone. I use Bluetooth headphones all the time and I'm even considering getting the new Google buds but I'm waiting to see more reviews about them.
I'm also getting more space on my phone which is a plus. I never had an issue because of High Res backups for all your photos but it's always nice to have some extra space.

They could have kept the headphone jacks and still got the IP67 or higher certification. Aside from the lame idea to not include that, the P2 checked off every gripe I had about the original Pixel, which is why I held onto my 6p for this long.

I'm also replacing my Nexus 6P with the Pixel 2 XL. I am not happy about them removing the headphone jack. Otherwise this is my ideal phone. I also ordered the pixel buds, but they're on backorder and will be a few weeks before they show up.

Had a 6P with no interest in Pixel XL. Unfortunately, had a warranty issue and ended up with an XL as a replacement. It's only a few weeks but I don't really like it. The massive white forehead and chin bezels totally take away from the display. I don't like the smaller 5.5 display coming from the 5.7. And the speakers are very weak.
It seems like the 2 XL has resolved the issues I have with the XL. I would never buy a phone with white bezels either. I am very happy with the performance of the XL and especially its camera so the 2 XL should be even better.
The fact that I received the XL as a warranty replacement and the buy-back program, I'm definitely looking forward to the 2 XL. I hope (though not holding my breath) that it will be a bit easier to custom ROM than the original Pixel.

I am coming from a Nexus 6P.
Camera: The camera on the 6p was pretty good. (except for slomo.) Looks like this one is even better. Plus OIS this time around.
Headphone Jack: I 100% dont care about this. I cant even remember the last time i used the headphone jack. I mostly only use my car (bluetooth) or my Bose Speaker (bluetooth)
Bluetooth 5.0: Since ill have this phone for 2+ years glad it has this incase something cool comes along.
Screen: My 6p has a lot of burn in. Esp the nav buttons and status bar. Its starting to drive me crazy. I hope a POLED holds up better then the AMOLED
4G of RAM: I was always coming close to using all my RAM on the N6P

Coming from a 6P as many here are.
I was gonna ride the 6P running Pure Nexus for another year (got mine in Dec 15), but ended up with the beginning symptoms of the BLOD, so I called Google (I purchased the 6P through them) and even though it was 8 months out of warranty, they did me a solid and sent me a refurbished one.
I started reading posts about others who received a refurb'd 6P from Google having BLOD issues on the refurbs.
So I started thinking about other devices.
Then Nate (Beanstown106) dev for PN on my 6P posts that he ordered the Pixel 2 XL, and that did it for me.
Ordered my unlocked, all black 64 gb 2 XL last week. I'm on Verizon, but I prefer unlocked, and Google got my $ since they took care of me on a way out of warranty device.
Looking forward to whatever Nate cooks up for he 2 XL!

Hoping 2 XL screen and cellular connectivity are without issue.
I just received XL to replace 6P and thought I'd keep it but screen has a dead zone across top row apps. 2 XL release is good timing so I'll take advantage of the $410 trade in deal.

Why are dual speakers a must for you guys?
I'm also replacing my 6P with a Pixel 2 XL. I do wonder though, why do so many people care about dual speakers. What do you guys actually do with them that makes them such a must?
I'm not trying to insult anyone, just genuinely curious.
I mean, phone speakers sound terrible in general right... So, I sometimes use them to watch a quick YouTube video, or a quick audio file where audio quality doesn't really matter too much. A single speaker would have sufficed as long as you can hear it.
But if you listen to music, wouldn't you use a quality Bluetooth speaker or quality headphones? Same with movies right? I mean I just assume these are scenarios where quality of the audio matters.
Any insight on this?

Not about music but think for many front speakers beat down fire speakers because there is no muting when holding phone. Me, holding XL phone one handed my pinky covers at least one speaker.

My story - have been on 6p for 2 years (almost exactly to the date). The past few months the phone started developing battery, uhm, issues like death at 20%, random crashes etc. Ordered 2xl the day of the announcement. Dual speakers NBD, the camera is (generally happy with 6p's but the better the better.) When listening to music I use the sony pha-1a with good headphones, via usb-c to usb adapter. Looking forward to the 2XL, hope google doesn't do the same thing they did 2 years ago when people ordering two weeks later getting their phones while we suckers wait and wait. And wait. Then drop the order, reorder and get the new phone in 2 days..

As long as you can hear it is key for me. Many times I'll want to hear a song or video but can't due to background noise. This is not a problem for my 6P but was for every other phone

November will be 2 years with my 6P and I can honestly say it's been my favorite phone to date.
I've enjoyed the dual front facing speakers when I watch youtube stuff, the camera is well above average and I've enjoyed the various custom roms that some very talented developers have put together. The whole experience has been good but it's now time to get something new, especially with the battery starting to do the whole shutdown thing at 30% or so.
The Pixel 2 XL has pretty much everything I like in a phone and while I don't love the cost, I'm doing it anyway.
I don't care about the headphone jack, as I never use it, but I do understand why a lot of people are upset. Sound is definitely better through a wired headset.
I chose the 64 gb version, as it's enough for my uses, but I would have really preferred that the phone had expandable memory. I'll deal with it as I have with my 6P. Going to the 128gb would have brought the cost to over $1000 with tax and that was my breaking point. Lmao!!
I'm pretty excited and wish I hadn't waited until the 5th to order mine as it probably cost me a couple of days. I'm still looking at delivery by 10/26 or 27 so it's all happening.
There isn't a perfect phone as everyone has different desires, but I've gotta say that Google really comes close and I'm happy with my choice.

After having stereo sound for years using a stereo mod on a Nexus 5 and having stereo speakers on the 6P, I cannot stand watching videos or playing games in landscape with a single bottom firing speaker. It's literally my only gripe about the Pixel XL I'm trading in for the 2 XL.
