Hey! Obiwan22, I saw your post on engadget and started my own thread to get it to run smoothly, its got some good info as to why this won't work that well, lol. But I'm still trying different programs, haven't given up entirely on it just yet.

How responsive is it? I know windows remote desktop and standard VNC aren't fast enough for gaming. However splashtop does not support Linux. I don't much feel like installing their streaming software to get remote support, unless you can connect over the internet and not just locally.

You can connect over the internet, and it even tries to make it easy.... never tested it. Personally I see little reason to do it, no right click, no happy. How am I supposed to place those blocks I mined in Minecraft without right clicking? :-\
P.S. disregard the whole lag thing from the other thread. Wifi isn't exactly a gigabit ethernet, true. I wire everything I can, true. Wifi is enough fast to do what you want, at least locally! Ask Sony how they made Remote Play (use a PSP connected remotely to a PS3 to play a few games that support it): the lower the bitrate you set, the more compression artefacts you'll see, so it works EXACTLY like OnLive (try it, there are demos. Not perfect but very well playable) and Splashtop. Be worried only by the cpu power, as it's going to handle both your game and the video encoding.... also don't hope too much to play over the internet. Maybe it's doable but at least I don't see it happening for me. And btw the PSP boasts a wifi "b" that is a speedy 11mbps (very performing too, hardly goes above 5) as opposed to some weird wifi n of the TF, that apparently goes up to 72mbps.

CPU power isn't an issue, my desktop has 6 cores so it should be able to handle a game and splashtop. I wonder remote desktop has never gotten any better about being responsive. I guess microsoft has written it to keep bandwidth usage to a minimum.
Personally I wasn't impressed at all. I use Splashtop all the time.
I just find it funny that some Android blogs title it "hacker mods his transformer to play wii". sigh.
This is similar to a story a while back about some kid using his android phone with wifi tethering and he used his PS3 to use that wifi hotspot and plays call of duty black open on psn and the title of the article was something like "Modder plays call of duty black ops on his htc desire"
In short, I want to use my Nexus 10 to play games on my Windows desktop, on the same network. I have a 5GHz router + Gigabit Ethernet, so the connection should (hopefully) be fine.
There are only two programs that I'm aware of that should be able to do this. Kainy, and Splashtop 2. Both programs have their own issues though.
With Kainy, if I use anything above Fair image quality, either the top or bottom-half of the screen on the N10 will be corrupted. Also it seems there is a decent amount of audio delay (video is fine, audio is behind), and the framerate on the N10 seems to drop drastically randomly.
With Splashtop 2, it works for the most part, except input is always treated as a tablet. For example, with just my N10 at all, if I try turning the camera on any 3D game, it will "spaz out" and go every which way and not behave as intended. If I plug in a USB mouse to my N10, it will do the same exact thing (I guess mouse input on Android is still seen as touch).
Not sure if there's any known fixes for the above issues I ran into (if there is, I'd love to hear ) but is there any other programs available that might help me be able to stream PC games to my Nexus 10 at decent framerate?

I've tried it in the past, but I believe the framerate was... horrible, even on LAN.

Splashtop has an app designed for this. Splashtop THD I think it's called.

It is, but the app works (and can be purchased for) on the N10 strangely...
In any case, the THD version "does" work, but it puts a virtual joystick on-screen for camera controls it seems (I only tried it with the WoW profile). But touchscreen and mouse turning were still an issue.
I emailed Splashtop 2's support about it and they said it was something they were looking into.
The Kainy developer mentioned on his forums that the next version should fix some issues, which I'm hoping will fix the issues I'm having.

I'll look forward to that update then. Just wondering, why would you play wow on tablet if you got it on pc? Is the hardware on the n10 better than your computer?

It's just streaming, not actually on the device. So you could play WoW or other games away from the computer. I used it for D3 and some fps games.

It would be nice when I'm not in-front of my computer. For example, I walk to a friend's house almost every weekend, and dragging my entire Desktop along is kind of a pain. Essentially, I would love to just be able to Stream games from my Desktop while it's at Home, to my tablet (which is far easier to take) There's also a coolness factor I would think if I would play some Guild Wars 2 from a tablet
Also it would be nice around the house too if I wanted to play some Dota 2 if I was downstairs or something lol.

I see, that makes sense, and it would be great to see if that's possible without lagg. The thing is if your friends wifi is fast as yours (in your house) o not.

I have spent days trying to get something working and honestly nothing will work. Splashtop would be fine if it would accept the controller input better, half the time the code goes across as gibberish. I haven't tried https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.microsoft.rdc.android this yet but it may work better.
I will try some more tonight to see but since hearthstone is a card game (i think) then you may have a much easier time then me because I am trying to do psx2 over wifi.
Just tried splashtop and it works pretty great with hearthstone thanks a lot ! :good:

But Fullscreen doesnt work with this and the Nexus 7, it always says that the Streamer on the PC doesnt support fullscreen...

Iv been playing with my shield for awhile and have had an amazing experience, despite the obvious poor marketing of the product and unnecessary handicap nvidia has added in order to boost gpu sales with regards to streaming(I only buy nvidia graphic cards but it still should not be required).
The shield is the best handheld iv ever owned, I felt compelled to share my experience
1. created a virtual hotspot on my sony vaio duo 11 hd 4000 gpu(most laptops have dual band network cards built in) and connected shield. No router was necessary.(although a router would be a few frames faster)
Loaded Splastop thd gamepad
In gamepad mode you can just easily click any key on your shield and it registers on any game config menu on your pc!! that was awesome.

Metro last night, loved it!
Borderlands 2, Worked Awsome! Im never going near my alienware M15x again. (used fullscaler to run games fullscreen 720p)
2 Loaded PPSSPP on my LAPTOP, streamed it to my shield!! Played Gta Liberty city, crisis core, god of war all full speed! And streamed perfect.
3. Played Fangz HD, Gangstar Vegas, Brotherhood of violence (gets better) all mapped with TinCore keys. Perfect experience.
Why the shield is better than my other devices in MY opinion.
a.Moga pro cannot pull any of this off due to the lag
b.My other devices could stream but needed the 360 controller to be attached to the pc
I felt compelled to say how much i love the shield so I wrote this, however Im very disappointed that Nvidia chose to force people to buy a new gpu to enjoy it when it can easily work with almost any Gpu. I have an Alienware M15x with a 560m which i did not use this time due to network issues.. however Im not sure if I want a new desktop. The hardware limitation seems artificial, still this is the best device iv owned.

How did you get Splashtop THD working on your shield? When I look it up in the Play store, it says it's not compatible with the Shield. Really looking to see how this works, because I want to find some way to play Steam games on my shield and miracast stream them to my TV at the same time.
you have to side load the apk file which you can find online. it works great.

can get PPSSPP natively on Shield, works great apparently.
I know how you feel about the shield it's an amazing device with infinite possibilities for example you can play from DOS to PSP emulators you can play real PC games ,Android games , watch movies ,stream movies, browse the web, chat basically this device does it all :laugh:

I only wish I could stick in my sim card and use it as my AIO phablet/gamingconsole. Looking into a micro usb sim modem to possibly get to work.
Im going to try kainy, it looks a bit complicated to connect, I use splashtop thd because the mouse works perfectly on it, it feels its emulating a gamepad. the other splashtop personal is deliberately broken by the company when it comes to gaming because the mouse movement is way off and in most other games the mouse movement is impossible.
forgot to mention the battery life.. it lasts for hours n hours, I can stream all day!

Streaming from a pc is way smoother, Nativly PPSSPP cant play many games properly on the shield, God of war for example.

No, my lag is nothing like that even without a router, Make sure your laptop or pc has wireless N(you must have a wireless N card) enabled and you are using WPA2 encryption. (you need to use it for high speed access)
and
a. use splashtop THD, gamepad mode .. sadly you cant stream lower than 720p (so there maybe a slight lag barely noticeable)
b..Dont use the touchscreen to control games it wont work well.
c. when makeing a virtual hotspot, directly connect to your pc, do not connect to your router..

Haha yea Iv tried that it still doesnt give you the same feeling as the shield mainly because even the speakers are so good and the battery outlasts everything, but yes there is a flaw with the weight and screen size of the shield.
Iv updated ppsspp but I get 100% speed on pc when I stream to the shield. When I load it on my shield natively it runs around 60% to 65% im sure it will get there soon.
I just tried splashtop THD and Kainy is not even close to the nvidia streaming I didn't noticed lag in splashtop but image quality is poor same with kainy and that one lag as hell
there is no way to show people how much better is the nvidia streaming to the shield until they can see it in person the image is at least 90% of what you see in the computer is almost like you playing the game natively on the shield
More people need to mail splashtop to officially support the shield in the THD version, since the d-pad and left stick are pre locked to WASD
I'll try out how SplashTop does

I'll be glad to make comparison videos if someone will be able to port the Shield streaming app to other device removing the chipset check
Splashtop 2 is the last version I used to stream. I will agree that the quality of the stream is very low in comparison to what I was actually on my pc.

Yes the compression quality between splastop personal and THD when hooked up nvidia gpu's is on a very noticeable level, Im not sure what they are doing with THD tegra to nvidia streaming but its got some sort of specific coding maybe someone can find out since it works with all previous gen nvidia cards.
I'd like to jump in with some newb questions:
If I download splashtop THD and combine it with Tincore, I can mimic using the shield game streaming? As in, I can play something like FFXIV from my computer to it and be able to control it properly?
THD is on sale right now 50% @ $9.99 Do I buy it even tho it isn't "compatible"?
Anyone using plex and not able to get it working on our phone? I can't get it to play over 4g, and wifi takes longer to load a movie than with my previous phone. Just curious if anyone else is having this problem. I noticed more recent reviews in the play store of the app complain of this as well.
Hmm, works for me on a 1080p mkv file as well as my standard mp4's. Seems to be better than the Xperia Z I traded for, and leagues better than the S4 I had.

I had to change the settings from 720 to 1080 for both cell and wifi within Plex app, then I restarted Plex and boom goes the dynamite :laugh:
plex pass doesn't make a difference. changing the quality probably helped because it was direct playing videos which seems to work. transcoding doesn't work.

Didn't make a difference for me on 4g. I did have to do this over wifi. Weird.
Nvidia Shield + Portable Project =.... Profit?
No really i literally picked up a cheap portable projector as a joke and went to my old tree house (Maybe 20 meters away from the house). I was surprised to still have a decent wifi connection and broadcasted a decent sized picture on the wall and enjoyed some PC gaming. Really wish I had this as a kid.
Figured I'd share the idea for those who may not have thought of this yet =)
Not sure if the idea of having a great 4g signal in the future going camping and still gaming or watching a movie on a big surface excites me or worries me about the direction I want to take with my media habits....

Err. Um. Ok... Seems like a lot of extra hardware for the bigger screen. But it *would* be nice to have a 7" screen.

yeah I know it looks crazy that's the hardware for the HDMI power and inputs , they have those professional field monitors for cameras even 1080p IPS but they cost more than the shield and they must be heavy with battery installed

Also, the Shield already has HDMI output @ 720p via screen mirroring and soon (if it wasn't in the update a few days ago) 1080p.

Hey yes we have 1080p now but the update brake the bit rate streaming so there is a lot of artifacts now
