Used towelroot now I can't perform updates - Verizon Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
So a couple months ago I used Towelroot to root my phone. But now I can't perform an OTA update. Anyone know how to undo the root? I used Root checker and it says I am no longer rooted. Here is some info about my phone:
- Galaxy S5 (Verizon)
- 4.4.2
- Kernel: 3.4.0 (July 17th)
Anyone have any ideas on how to undo what Towelroot did?
Thanks!

You'll need to ODIN back to stock.
Follow the instructions in this thread:

Thank you, I will follow these instructions. I have sort of an off topic question. If I use Odin to go back to stock, will my apps be there? I am concerned because I have a bunch of sites that I use two step authentication for (Google Authenticator app). Will the app be there with the data when I perform this Odin stock installation?
Thanks!

Odin makes the phone like new, fresh out of the box. Unless it is backed up to Google, anything that didn't come with the phone, won't be on the phone.
You could use an app like titanium to back up your phones current state, odin back to stock, update, root, and restore via titanium.

I use titanium backup religiously and like 99℅ of my apps are restored intact. Specifically Facebook and the Google authenticator both restore as you left them. Funny thing is I have been using the same TB data files for the last three phones. Pretty much all good to go and I flash new Roms ALL The TIME. Lol

yup.. tibu is your friend. pretty sure tibu needs root tho so hed hafta reroot the device.. he really shouldnt mess with root if he doesnt know how to go back stock lol
once you flash tar in odin in order to root you needa go back to a rootable firmware then flash new firmware in odin etc lol. i recommend just flashing a updated stock rom through safestrap then flash new firmware only through odin.. all after a backup of course

1.is it possible to backup my stock rom wich i recieved with my s4 in cmw before rooting the device?
2. does restoring a rom wich you backed up after rooting will gain you automaticly root access when in restoring it? (superuser and the premissions will be installed and activated automaticly?)
thanks in advance !

Hi,
1 .Yes ,you can backup your entire system with the recovery backup.
2. If you back up a rooted system,it will restore as a rooted system.

Hi,
Look HERE
Your best plan would be to install a recovery, backup your system, and then return it to an "Official" rooted system with the link I gave you.
On the thread there is a link for a stock recovery to return you to stock and be able to receive updates.
The thread I gave you ,the [OP] is constantly updating his ROMS,so you will not lose out on updates anyway.

Hi,
It depends whether the stock ROM contains stock recovery.
I doubt it.
You will probably have to find a stock recovery somewhere.

t-mobile
galaxy s4
sgh-m919
android 4.3
baseband m919uvuemk2
kernel version 3.4.0-2015522
have spent the last day boning up on rooting my t-mobile s4 4.3 and still feel that i have too many questions, and i consider myself pretty tech savvy, at least in terms of pcs! anyway i'm someone could help me with the following questions:
1. can i take a snapshot of my current (stock) setup before i root, which i would be able to reload in the event i find rooting is not for me? i'm talking about a backup, image or snapshot of everything that's now on my phone which i can restore if needed, returning my phone to it's exact state before i rooted?
2. when i root my phone will it delete such things as my contacts, photos, apps, etc? or will that only happen when a custom rom is installed after rooting? if the latter, i'm guessing i could do a full phone backup after rooting using something like titanium, and the flash a custom rom which would give me a clean os, free of all samsung's and t-mobile's bloatware? and if i decided a rooted phone wasn't for me, i could restore the backup of my original phone using titanium?
3. when i root my phone and install a clean, bloat-free os, what sort of thing will no longer be possible in terms of my provider's (tmobile) services? for example i guess i would no longer get automatic ota's? how about tmobile notifications or the like? will tmobile be able to access my rooted phone as they are able to do now? and if not are there any disadvantages to this? i'm guessing there are more advantages to this.
4. so once my phoned is rooted and a new rom flashed, is it a relatively easy process to reload all of my contacts, photos and settings?
5. and, finally, someone recommended that i use the rotting steps outlined at galaxys4root.com, do you agree?
thanks very much in advance, what a tremendous community!

[Q] Is Supersu The Best Way To Unroot When Flashing Firmware Isn't Possible?

I need to be able to unroot my phone so that I can take it in for repair.
Apparently my phone (SGH-I337 - AT&T) cannot have firmware flashed to it in order to unroot it (apparently because I allowed an update to be installed a while back when I shoudn't have).
There's a lot of people recommending SuperSU for unrooting but the recommended procedures vary (primarily when it comes to which files you should manually delete and when exactly you should delete them) and there's also no mention of whether or not all traces of rooting are removed.
I'm really worried that I'll bring the phone in and they'll find something which indicates that the phone was rooted.
Note: I don't have any custom recovery or firmware installed. The phone has only been rooted using towelroot. Nothing else.

Wow, thank you very much for that info.! I really appreciate it.
Every set of instructions I had come across told me to flash either the I337ATTAMDL firmware or the I337UCUAMDB firmware, and attempting to flash either of those resulted in a FAIL in Odin.
Before I proceed, can you confirm that flashing this NB1 firmware will not trip KNOX or affect a flash counter (requiring a reset with TriangleAway)?
Also, real quick while I have your attention, do you happen to know of any custom firmware/ROM (eg, a version of CyanogenMod or something similar) that I can flash to my phone? Or am I completely out of luck in that department?

[Q] Updating from 4.3 to Kitkat without Root.

I have a Samsung Galaxy S4 ATT Base: 1337UCUEMK2. My phone is rooted but I am looking to update to KitKat with or without root. I am not against loosing root to get the update. I have searched for a couple of days now and have not found any concrete answer to what the process would be for me to unroot and update. As of now I have the apps that are recommended to be frozen through TB to stop OTAs. Is it as simple unfreezing those apps, unrooting and getting the OTA, or do I have to prescribe to a more intricate process. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Thanks for the reply. I've read that post in the past but for my own understanding, what I would need to do would be to use the Odin tool to install NB1 version, which is not rooted, then upgrade to the latest version of Android like you would normally upgrade via the software updates? I just want to make sure I am understanding correctly what the course of action would be if I were to partake. Thanks again.

[Q] Galaxy s4 in a weird Not-Rooted/Rooted state

I recently rooted my Galaxy S4 using the Towel Root method. but a week ago or so while driving ATT forced an update and updated to the new version. The problem is I do not have Root active, but I can't use certain apps due to getting a message saying that they can't be used on a Rooted device. I am not sure how to remove this odd state I am in. What is it that you really want - to regain root or to unroot?
1. To regain root - read the root section of All Things AT&T thread
2. To unroot
a. Without losing data -- I am not sure exactly how to do this
One way would be to re-root and then unroot using the superSu app.
b. With losing data -- Oding NB1 stock and update to latest. Follow Return to Stock
I would like to have it go back to unrooted status. I was hoping for a data safe method. But at this point whichever will work. I am assuming i'll have to root, then unroot. But I didnt know if this causes problem as apps believe it to be rooted but the system says I am not.
I'm having the same dilemma
I rooted my s4 using towelroot. Later att forced an update to 4.4.2 which i thought wouldn't work because it was tooted. But it actually did work and updated. Now the phone is not rooted but it seems that there are some files that are still somewhere that pretty much makes it be partially rooted but with not real root access. Now that the next update is being forced by att for version 4.4.4 it doesn't work. It stores installing at 27% with a failed message. I uninstalled towel root and super user but with no success. I whiped the partition and no success. I did a factory reset which i thought it would work and remove the files that maked look rooted and no success. What should i do exactly to unroot it?

[Q] Rooted S5 - How to prepare to sell it? (unroot to stock?)

I don't know much about rooting, but I was able to root my Verizon S5 and customize it extensively.
I'm not actually selling it. My mom is eligible for upgrade, so I'm going to use her upgrade to get a S6 and give her my S5. I think I'd like to get the S5 back to stock so my mom doesn't have to worry about not updating, etc.
I tried searching, but surprisingly couldn't find a sold thread about returning the S5 to stock ROM. Seems like it should be a sticky. Maybe it is and I missed it?
Anyway, I have a "Stock" package under Restore in Safestrap. Not sure if that could be used. Can someone point me toward the un-rooting process? I don't know what I need to do, and whether I need to worry about knox, etc.

If you have frozen SDM in order to not get any more update requests, go unfreeze it. OpenGo into safestrap recovery and restore your stock copy. Open safestrap. Uninstall recovery. Go into settings, applications and uninstall safestrap. Now you should be able to open SuperSU , go into settings, go down to where it says to fully unroot your phone and unroot it. Or you could go down to software update and take an update. You will lose root then.

SDM is not frozen by Titanium Backup, but I have not been getting update requests. Is there somewhere else it would be frozen?
Do I need to worry about "KLMS Agent 2.2.101" or "Knox Notification Manager 2.0" or "Support & Protection 3.0.1"? Those are frozen by TB.
Also, how risky is this method of unrooting?

You want stock so unfreeze everything. I believe you run the risk of losing root but that is the point, right? Everything you do with a rooted phone has risks but all you are doing is removing root.
