I have a Samsung Galaxy S4 ATT Base: 1337UCUEMK2. My phone is rooted but I am looking to update to KitKat with or without root. I am not against loosing root to get the update. I have searched for a couple of days now and have not found any concrete answer to what the process would be for me to unroot and update. As of now I have the apps that are recommended to be frozen through TB to stop OTAs. Is it as simple unfreezing those apps, unrooting and getting the OTA, or do I have to prescribe to a more intricate process. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
I would Odin the nb1 tar file then ota to nj4. See this on how to root it.

Thanks for the reply. I've read that post in the past but for my own understanding, what I would need to do would be to use the Odin tool to install NB1 version, which is not rooted, then upgrade to the latest version of Android like you would normally upgrade via the software updates? I just want to make sure I am understanding correctly what the course of action would be if I were to partake. Thanks again.

You've got it down. Odin will wipe your device so make sure any pic, music, etc you want to keep are backed up off the device or on your external sdcard. Also, it's a good idea to use titanium backup for your apps and their data

I'm currently rooted on the 4.3 MK2 build. I want to OTA update to 4.4, but can't because the phone is rooted. I'm aware that these are the files I need to return to stock however I was hoping that there would be a way that does not wipe my internal memory.
Is the above firmware guaranteed to wipe my phone? If so, is there any other 4.3 firmware out there that is no-wipe? I'm still a little new to rooting, so thanks for the help.
You got the right firmware and yes, it will wipe your device. Check out the app helium

If you're rooted and didn't modify anything in the system partition, you can unroot using SuperSU. You'll have to search how to do this, as I have no experience doing this.
Assuming you rooted with saferoot. The second post of this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2565758. Will walk you through doing a complete and thorough unroot. Basically everything saferoot does it undoes in reverse.

Thanks. I forgot about this and was able to successfully unroot.
However my 4.4 update is still failing at around 28%. Is there anything else that could prevent you from updating?
I recently updated to 4.4.2 KitKat on my AT&T Galaxy S4. I am rooted with safestrap installed. I am new to Androids and I was wondering if there were any roms available for baseband I337UCUFNB1, I found GoldenEye but it won't work on my baseband without a certain file being flashed through Odin first, every link I have come across to download this file ends up saying file not found. Are there any safe roms out there that I can use? I've searched all over and found some, but it's just kind of confusing to me. Thanks in advance!

Yea i've been there, I'm just really confused on the whole process is all. It says something about going from NB1 to NC1, but the roms it lists aren't for either one of those basebands but it still says they'll work. I don't know if I want to risk it lol

You're not going to brick your device. You may have to Odin back to nb1 in the worst case. Do the ota to nc1 and root with towel root. Then use safestrap.

I need to be able to unroot my phone so that I can take it in for repair.
Apparently my phone (SGH-I337 - AT&T) cannot have firmware flashed to it in order to unroot it (apparently because I allowed an update to be installed a while back when I shoudn't have).
There's a lot of people recommending SuperSU for unrooting but the recommended procedures vary (primarily when it comes to which files you should manually delete and when exactly you should delete them) and there's also no mention of whether or not all traces of rooting are removed.
I'm really worried that I'll bring the phone in and they'll find something which indicates that the phone was rooted.
Note: I don't have any custom recovery or firmware installed. The phone has only been rooted using towelroot. Nothing else.

Here is a guide I made for getting back to complete 100% unrooted stock. It's for the GS3, but should work on the GS4 as well. http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3-att/general/how-to-restore-device-status-to-t2832880

What firmware version are you on? There is an Odin flashable firmware that'll work on it. The one to uses depends on what your on now.

Wow, thank you very much for that info.! I really appreciate it.
Every set of instructions I had come across told me to flash either the I337ATTAMDL firmware or the I337UCUAMDB firmware, and attempting to flash either of those resulted in a FAIL in Odin.
Before I proceed, can you confirm that flashing this NB1 firmware will not trip KNOX or affect a flash counter (requiring a reset with TriangleAway)?
Also, real quick while I have your attention, do you happen to know of any custom firmware/ROM (eg, a version of CyanogenMod or something similar) that I can flash to my phone? Or am I completely out of luck in that department?

Flashing nb1 will not trip Knox. You're out of luck with cm. With the locked bootloader you can only flash touch wiz based roms using safestrap

I recently rooted my Galaxy S4 using the Towel Root method. but a week ago or so while driving ATT forced an update and updated to the new version. The problem is I do not have Root active, but I can't use certain apps due to getting a message saying that they can't be used on a Rooted device. I am not sure how to remove this odd state I am in. Has anyone had this issue and know how to remove it?
Device: Samsung Galaxy S4
Carrier: AT&T
Model: SAMSUNG-SGH-I337
Android Version 4.4.2

What is it that you really want - to regain root or to unroot?
1. To regain root - read the root section of All Things AT&T thread
2. To unroot
a. Without losing data -- I am not sure exactly how to do this
One way would be to re-root and then unroot using the superSu app.
b. With losing data -- Oding NB1 stock and update to latest. Follow Return to Stock
I would like to have it go back to unrooted status. I was hoping for a data safe method. But at this point whichever will work. I am assuming i'll have to root, then unroot. But I didnt know if this causes problem as apps believe it to be rooted but the system says I am not.
I'm having the same dilemma
I rooted my s4 using towelroot. Later att forced an update to 4.4.2 which i thought wouldn't work because it was tooted. But it actually did work and updated. Now the phone is not rooted but it seems that there are some files that are still somewhere that pretty much makes it be partially rooted but with not real root access. Now that the next update is being forced by att for version 4.4.4 it doesn't work. It stores installing at 27% with a failed message. I uninstalled towel root and super user but with no success. I whiped the partition and no success. I did a factory reset which i thought it would work and remove the files that maked look rooted and no success. What should i do exactly to unroot it?

You would have to Odin the nb1 tar file, it's the only version that exists. Then ota to 4.4.4, nj4. Any version of Odin works. It will wipe your device and you'll have to start over setting it up.

I unfroze sdm. Received update and applied it. It just installs and errors.
I was hoping it would just wipe my root and install 5.0
Any suggestions?
Thank you.
To update you need to flash a stock tar using Odin, which would include the stock ROM and stock firmware, then update from that, but you would lose root. Or you could wait for someone to upload the firmware and ROM.
