Best S5 modem? ANG8 seems bad - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have G900f on EE in the UK, I updated the modem to ANG8 and the 4g signal seems to have suffered ever since. I am pretty sure I was able to get a 4g signal much more often with the original modem than I do now (although I have tested the top speed when I have a perfect signal at home and the top speed is fine, it just doesnt seem to be very good at grabbing a 4g signal).
Does anyone have any suggestions for good g900f modems (particularly for EE UK) which are perhaps known to be good at picking up 4g signals? (and where I can get hold of them as I don't want to install an entire rom from sammobile and wipe out the xstrestolite rom that I use).

What's your APN set as?
---------- Post added at 10:35 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:32 PM ----------
Should be Name: internet APN: everywhere everything else blank. To be honest I'm in the same boat, I found my signal was a bit crap, but it seems to have settled down now. It was better before but I can't remember the previous version, flash another modem and see how you go. I'm also on EE by the way.

the original firmware is ANCE. I am downloading ANG2 now which is the last official EE one i think, if that is no better ill just go back to ANCE. I would much rather just download the modem than the entire 1.4gb firmware though!

Just search for the firmware mate. Google might have some places you can get it, just make sure it's relatively reputable.

managed to grab ANJ1 so I will see what that does next week, else back to ANG2 then the original. With 4g it is more important to hold the 4g signal than get maximum throughput since a slow 4g is still hugely faster than the best H+ so hopefully this newest one is better.

I've had done different results as regards to 4g but if it works for you then go for it. U need to allow it to settle, two days should be OK

Hmmm not sure if this modem is any better or not yet. I do have the original one to try but all I have is the modem.bin and non-hlos.bin files, and as far as I know 7-zip tar files will not work in odin.
As far as i can tell i can flash these straight via odin as it accepts .bin files. I am wondering if I can just flash the modem.bin, not set odin to reboot it, then flash the non-hlos.bin and then reboot it? if not I will just flash the modem, reboot then flash the non-hlos.bin.

Can you check which bootloader version it is please. Go into download mode/Odin mode and look for the thing that says either B2 or B3. If it says B2 it's still bootloader 2, if it says B3 it's bootloader 3. Report back ASAP. I would really like to know.

Damn not bootloader 3 that sucks. thanks for checking. On another note im looking at the firmware details but it seems as if the actual firmware didn't update as it still says August. Maybe just a baseband update or a prep for a future update? Sucks though was hoping for a a B3 update. Thanks though

It tried to update. Funny story is I accidently booted into recovery mode in lieu of bootloader mode by mistake so quickly changed buttons mid vibration and booted into dl mode instead of completing the update. No idea what completed or didn't.

Hmmm not being able to odin back to stock is kinda scary TBH. It kinda sounds like the bootloader tried to upgrade or something since if the bootloader was still B2 it would flash fine.

That was my thinking. I had a few errors in ODIN, both versions. Also tried several versions of the firmwares from different locations. I got lucky. Hence my hastily FYI on here. Lol

can someone post the update the sd slot on my phone stopped working after trying at least 3 microsd cards, i decided maybe if i flashed the older firmware it would start working again needless to say it didnt work and now my phone wont boot and everytime i try to flash a firmware i keep getting an error that says "sw rev check fail : {abort}fused 4 < binary 2" can someone help me out on this please
The good news is it is fixable, you just need the exact firmware you were using before (or newer.) It sets a version number in the bootloader and the firmware you downloaded has a lower version.
Unfortunately, I've been trying to find that same new firmware for 3 days now with no luck. (Keep reading though!) I'm trying to switch a tmo over to att, and since its going to be a work phone they insist it have the att firmware in 'official' mode - fortunately, they don't care what the paint on the back says.
If someone with that firmware posts the 'Firmware' page from Phone INFO ★Samsung★ I might be able to get it. (And if I do, I'll send it over - much more reliable than the official recovery method.)
You may have already lost everything on the phone, but I hope you were prepared for that. You might be able to fix the softbrick (resulting in it being 100% stock) with 'samsung smart switch' (win/mac) using 'emergency device recovery'. It will ask for your model number (SM-G935A) and serial # and then it will download and odin-flash the firmware for you.
I say 'might' because I tried that for the tmo phone last night and it eventually just crashed.
Forgive any weird disjointed text, it is early in the morning.. if some part of that didn't make sense let me know.

The firmware is available, but the source is questionable. As you discovered, ATT does not post their ROMs (just one more reason why they are THE Evil Empire).
Most are getting their files from a Persian site:
http://dl.pars-hamrah.com/ (switch to English)
And the G935A PI2 files are here:
http://dl.pars-hamrah.com/index.php...ATT4API2_USA ATT Android 6.0.1_4File Firmware
Premium fee is required for download and I have not looked into the cost. I have read that they are legit, but who knows...
Found it on clangsm.com as well, which is just as sketchy. I'll see what I can do, might have enough info with the filenames (and might not..)
Edit: Might just be too early in the morning (I'll try later tonight) but the info I need is definitely on that page from the phone info app. (I'm not doing anything magic, just trying a couple of apps.)
Alternately if someone wants to PM me an AT&T serial number (not the imei! always think REALLY hard about saying no if anyone asks for that!) I can see about listening in on the smart switch recovery.
It be great if you found it. Be nice to start from Sept firmware.

Confirmed worked flawlessly with Odin3 v3.12
My steps for updating and saving data/config:
0) Unfreeze all system apps
1) FlashFire backup to external SD card, make sure to backup /data and /internal storage along with /system in case you need to roll back.
2) Boot to Download, use Odin 3.12 (the unmodified version) to flash the 4 OE FW files
3) Let the phone fully boot, go through the basic setup, go to settings, enable USB/ADB debug and unknown sources
4) Reboot into Download, flash Eng bootloader with the PrinceComsy Odin
5) After phone reboots and starts, run root
6) "Enable SuperSU during boot"
7) Install FlashFire, grant root
8) Flash fixes/debloat, let the phone boot, reboot for good measure (I find that the extra reboot contributes to success)
9) After reboot, flash Xposed, etc.
10) FlashFire restore backup
11) After the phone boots, refreeze system apps
12) Profit.
OMG!
I can't even begin to thank you for sharing these files. I thought I was going to be without a phone for a little while. You are clutch!
Did Sammobile stop carrying USA firmware? It looks like there is no good way to download and manually update the firmware on any USA Samsung devices now.
I was looking for this firmware and had no luck, so I went and check a few other devices I have and NONE of them are on Sammobile anymore... WTF is going on. why would they pull all of the USA firmware off their site and not provide any news release about it.

Anyone know where I can get the latest G930P firmware G930PVPS4APJ2 ?

As of 10/26, Sprint rolled out the latest firmware for G930P (Galaxy S7), G930PVPS4APJ2. I have been searching everywhere since then and it has been 3 days without any luck. Since by mistake I loaded the G930U's API3 with the latest bootloader 4 and I am not able to downgrade to any of the older G930P firmwares. The worst part is that it also destroyed my factory SIM unlock. I want to go back to the G930P firmware and request to have it unlocked again. Someone please help. If this firmware is not yet available for downloading yet, any idea normally how long it takes from the day a firmware is rolled out until it is available on the web for downloading?
Thanks in advance for any help or info.
I'm glad someone posted this. I tried downgrading so I could root my S7 but it failed and now I'm assuming the only way to fix it is to flash stock firmware.

Search for SamFirm. It's an executable you launch on Windows and search for the firmware for your model and region you need and download it. It's the quickest I have seen so far.
This... I also need. Stuck until I get it. Bahhhhhh I don't like the s7 after 4 days. Didn't realize these updates pushed new bootloader version. Trying to build a ROM here... Dafuq?!?!?! -.-"

Do i have to flash these files in a certain order? or all at once? And, do I use the HOME_CSC or the CSC file?

You're supposed to flash all at once... Careful going to PJ2 though. bootloader version changes... And they haven't released flashable firmware for PJ2. I found a workaround flashing some U firmware (PI3) with new bootloader 4. Here's the link i went to. And i might add this is a worst case scenario. There's no going back due to the 7's locked bootloader. Of course this is only if you brick your current PJ2 somehow. Which i managed. Developers at work! Anyhow, wish you luck on PJ2, and i'll start development on it (depending on the nougat drop date) once i get a firmware release. Cheers!

Of course this is only if you brick your current PJ2 somehow. Which i managed. Developers at work! Anyhow, wish you luck on PJ2, and i'll start development on it (depending on the nougat drop date) once i get a firmware release. Cheers!

The OTA update to PJ2 went fine, no problems. Currently running smooth. My initial issue was I was previously rooted, and decided to go back to stock. When I went back to stock I flashed the PG1 firmware but it wasn't from Sammobile. I downloaded all the firmware files separately from an XDA post that the root post linked too (big mistake). I then didn't flash them all at the same time, and I don't think I flashed the HOME_CSC file, just the CSC one. It went fine and everything but when PH7 dropped everytime I tried to OTA update to PH7 it would fail at 32% every time during the bluescreen/android guy screen. I'm not sure what's being checked at 32% to why it failed there, but my guess was that the files I flashed did something that was invalid and the updating process wouldn't continue becuase of a validation issue, probably from flashing just CSC file and not HOME_CSC file, just a guess.
After I flashed PH7, I was so happy my data wasn't wiped, and was also happy when PJ2 updated just fine. Though I was bummed, I thought PJ2 was the Nougat update...
You're a life-saver dude! And, thanks for the website you gave me to download the firmware, took like 15min to download a 2.5GB file, compared to 5 hours when downloading from Sammobile and other sites. Thanks a bunch!
I had an S2 and S5 for 2 years each before the S7 and damn were those easy to root and flash ROMs/Mods on. Damn locked bootloader! The one thing I think Samsung fcked up on with this phone. I should have waited for the Google Pixel... I'm with Sprint (obv) and re-newing my contract I get a discount off the phone, and having an unlimited data family plan, plus a discount on my bill for where I work made me stay and renew my contract with Sprint.
What exactly are you working on? A way to unlock the bootloader, an easy way to root (the current way is tedious and laggy), or a ROM? I'm interested.

Do i have to flash these files in a certain order? or all at once? And, do I use the HOME_CSC or the CSC file?
Edit: **** yeah! I flashed the BT, AP, CP, and HOME_CSC all at once in Odin v3.11.1 and it didn't wipe data, just updated my phone to PH7. I am now updating via OTA to PJ2.

Glad you got squared away... I'm not really working on much. Just going to Mod a Stock ROM again, to start. I'm probably not the guy who will figure out custom recovery on the phone. lol But I'm going to dive into some documentation on the topic, and get acquainted. That's a far reach, though. I just don't see a lot of support or development for this phone series. So I want to put some stuff out there. Maybe even slim down and automate the rooting process. (Think SkipSoft Android Toolkit)
I don't know. Any ideas or requests are always welcomed.

If you're on the latest (PJ2) stay right where your are. There's no going backwards from there with the release on bootloader 4. You need to wait out the PJ2 firmware release.

Its not happening for me, you need to flash using odin using normal CSC and NOT the HOME CSC, after flashing wipe cache and factory reset.

I have a G930F, so it's the flat screen model but i'm having exactly the same issue.
Flashed BTU CSC, not CSC home. let it boot, went into recovery, wiped. WiFi still has issues even after a clean flash. The ! symbol sometimes appears and I lose access to the internet until i turn it off and on again.

The same thing is happening to my S7e and I updated it the same way as you. It's a pain in the arse and I'm considering rolling back to Nougat.

Yesterday was a really pain to call Uber, since the 4G symbol was there, but the internet was really really slow/sometime now working.
i wasnt having those bugs on android 7 =/.
The funny fact is im from Brazil (ZTO), and i received this Android 8 update... Using S7 edge SM G 935F

I don't know as I haven't looked into it yet. All I know is Oreo repartitions the internal memory so I don't know whether rolling back will undo this (probably not)

Hi,
My S7e has just upgraded to 8.0.0 and is now having the same wifi lag issue. Did you manage to find a fix?
Thanks
Ady
I tried a different kernel and now both my.wifi and Bluetooth are working like a charm. Before on Oreo my wifi switch went completely gray and in order to get the Bluetooth to work , Everytime I had to do a network reset. But now it's working great.
I had another issue, my security was pattern unlock and it would take a minute for it to unlock and sometimes in between the screen would turn off, that problem also got solved with the kernel .

This is the kernel I used on my rom. https://forum.xda-developers.com/s7-edge/development/kernel-arianoxxkernel-g930f-935f-oreo-t3807606

You do not have the same issue as us and as far as I'm aware a kernel swap would mean our devices had to be routed.

Whats wrong with having your phone manually check for updates?
are these legit? It asks to pay for the service to download.

Don't ever pay for firmwares
It seems if att is realising it as we speak.
Your device should see the update soon... I have checked several sites and yesterday and today seems to be pushing out to their customers. I would keep checking your OTA in system updates

Pay for sites are not allowed on xda. I would never pay for a firmware. Specially for a samsung
Then dont.
This site is used all the time and im not telling you to pay for it. Nor am i selling it to you personally. Someone will buy it then repack and upload it somewhere and share it for free.
But until someone does thats your solution. A question was asked and i answered it.
And maybe OP asked for odin files for a reason. Such as not being US based.

I would if it where me flash another carriers pie and then flash you carriers CSC file. The update should be out to flash with odin more than likely in the next few days. Since they are releasing it now. I would just wait until its out on the free firmware sites and get it from there

Kinda. Yea there is a guide to change carriers. But most s8s auto select csc based on the sim inserted i flash the multi rom and mine auto selects then but the csc file is what determines carrier the actual firmware is the same for all the snapdragon US devices..
But yea you got the jist of it down.

Nope, not working. Odin shows FAIL..!!
Suggest me if I have any other way to update
You could buy the fw... i had to pay for the s8 actives last fw, then i shared it with a mega link, until someone buys it and shares it the only option is to buy it yourself. As you seem to be aware att is a bastard when it comes to releasing full odin fw.

If AT&T does not release odin files, how can I trust this link. How did they get this? It does not even mention that it is for AT&T.

Idk where they come from, they are leaked somehow, theres anorher persian website that gdts them from time to time. Im not saying you need to buy them, nor am i affialated with or receive any compensation from that site.
Im simply saying where to get the files right now if you want them.
