[Guide] How to block the FireTV "update" URLs on Verizon FiOS router - Fire TV General

* * It has been brought to my attention that the router "ignores" all URL blocks from 1145-1159 everyday. This is to update the router, world time etc. Post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=52989947&postcount=13 * *
Here is how I blocked the update URLs on my Actiontec MI424 router for Verizon FiOS. This is one method that should be utilized along with this method as well: http://www.aftvnews.com/how-to-block-ota-update-for-amazon-fire-tv-and-keep-root-access/
First you need to log in to router, which is normally 192.168.1.1. The user name should be admin and the password will be on the side of the router, or possibly admin

Click on the My Network tab. Now locate the IP address and name of your FireTV, write it down. ( You will use this to locate the FireTV in a list later on )
Next, go to the Parental Control tab.
Starting with Step 1, find the name or IP address in the list and click Add. This is transfer the name over to the list on the right.
In Step 2 , make sure the bubble is ticked for "Block the following Websites and Embedded Keywords within a Website".
Directly below that, Type in each URL under the Website option. Make sure to click Add after each URL is typed in: ( Copy and paste each one )
http://amzdigitaldownloads.edgesuite.net
http://softwareupdates.amazon.com
This router requires the use of a schedule for all blocking of URLs. Click next to EACH day of the week ,so they are all selected. Keep the "Rule will be Active at the Scheduled Time" selected, and keep both of the start times default at 1am.
Now you have to create a Rule Name and Description. I used " UpdateBlocking " and " BlocksUpdate ". You cannot have any spaces in the name or description.
Lastly hit Apply to enforce the newly created rule.

Confused
Thanks for the detailed instructions. However, I am confused about one thing. It seems that in your setup, you already have the FireTV connected to the network. Your screen capture shows that the router already recognizes it as a connected device. Well, if it's already has access to the Internet, didn't it already do the OTA updates during the initial setup process? I just got my FireTV. Haven't even unboxed it until I know how to successfully block it from doing auto updates. Thanks for any clarification you can provide.

2 nd to that @jhumur. I got brand new never connected before, SO I don't have that Amazonfiretv in my list. ANy work around?

Both of you can try adding he AFTV to the router blocked ports with the WAN cable disconnected first.. That way there is not chance of letting an update thru. I can do this on my Tomator flashed routers. Not sure on a Verizon one. And never work on the AFTV without OTA updates disabled or CWM installed between 11:44 AM & 12:00 PM (Gave the range an extra minute buffer).

Thanks
Hey mroneeyedboh.... Thanks very much for this tutorial. Totally helps.
I'll be getting my Fire TV tomorrow. I'll just unplug my coax from my fios router and follow your guide. Thanks again.

Your welcome guys. Hit the thanks button!

I would recommend adding to disconnect coax before the adding the block IP's to make sure there aren't any surprises. Once the IP's are blocked the FTV can go online. If the router resets the internal IP of the FTV. It might be require that you set a static ip in the router for both FTV's mac's (Ethernet & Wifi). Depending what option you are connecting thru. I add both to mine so I can change if I ever choose. The mac's can be found in the about tab where you find the FW version.

Hey, Y314K. Thanks for your suggestion. Makes perfect sense: to disconnect the COAX from the box first. That clears up my one confusion. My router assigns IPs dynamically, and I don't see them changing over time. Of course, that could change once a new device is added, or if I do a hard reset. If the IP does change, would that mean the FTV will now have access to the update server? If so, maybe changing the router's settings to assign internal IPs is the first essential step?

Right & on some routers you can assign some devices an IP via MAC & still have the rest of the devices assign by the router. It's usually not a either or ? But I have never messed with a Verizon router before.

Remote Commander, Help?

Merry late christmas every1,
i been messin around with the Pebbles software available at:
http://www.pebbles.hcii.cmu.edu/software/userguide.php#pcnetworkconnections
and well, it allows u to virtually control ur desktop from your PPC (i have an 8525).
it allows u to connect serially, via usb, infrared and to a network host thru the options menu here:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",

its a nice program and works flawlessly thru usb and thru the network host when ur inside ur network i.e. 192.168.1.* and so on.
but ofcourse i have to push the limits and want to connect to my external IP so i can connect via 3g from anywhere, how cool is that..
and the port isnt shown anywhere so i connected via Wifi and ran netstat to notice:
Proto Local Address Foreign Address State
------- -------------------- ------------------ ---------------
TCP myComputer:4343 192.168.1.*:1060 ESTABLISHED
i just forwarded both ports in my routers config as so:
i then pluggd my external IP into the network host text box on my 8525, clicked ok and was prompted by the pebbles server software running on my laptop whether or not to allow a connection from my phones 166.135.*.* ip, i ofcourse accepted and got an error from my phone, "Error: Network not available"
i tried like 10 times without making any changes and it connected once and ran perfectly, like i was connected over usb or wifi. i finished testing it out so i closed the connection and since, i havent been able to get it working.
i opened PebblesPC from my taskbar to see:
and noticed like 20 different 166.135.*.* IP connection attempts all from my phone.
wut ive concluded is that while connected to the internet on our phones over 3g, the IP changes so frequently to my device and doesnt hold onto a particular IP long enough for the pebbles software to fully connect and hold a connection like it has when assigned via dhcp to my internal network, but thats just my guess =X
any help is appreciated, suggestions are welcome and if theres any other software that can do the same then thats cool too, but id like to get this particular one working
o and its freeware so thats nice too
Try Logmein. Works flawlessly for me and allows me to access my work PC from home. Even to start it up and shut it down!!
Allows you to start up and shut down applications on the remote PC including printing etc etc.
You need to register but it's free:

kinda wanted to figure out the pebbles thing, but since u reccommended logmein, ive been messin with it and its really nice
wish u could add more special keys to send but its definately really good.
appreciate it =)
Also look for my forthcoming roundup of all remote control-related.
will do. definitely lookin forward to it. will u post it here in these forums?

Touch Pro 2 WiFi Router

This is the wireless router for wireless internet sharing that has been floating around. It is not working 100% on the TP2, however the basic functions do work.
Updated version can be found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=538874
What precisely did you find not working in this WiFi Router?
Additional button - Row
Hi At0mAng
Personally, I use the Microsoft Direct Push button/row so wouldn't want to loose it to this. Is there any possibility of making a version that adds an additional button to the Comm Manager?
Cheers
andrew-in-woking
If I have uesed the ruter it is inposible to get conect to internet after.
In the begining I thourgh it was low 3g /hi but I found if I conect my tp2 as a modem or use the ruter again, it is no problem surfing whit the computer but still not whit the phone.
Any out there who has a solution or an idea?

From what I recall on the Touch Pro it was easier to start the router and did not have to enable the settings to automatically use the settings when starting. Othe than that it has been working well for me.
Yes I can make a version where direct push is left alonr or you can install this and use advance config to place direct push back on comm manager.
What's different from THIS version? That version works just fine on my Vario V.
Don't have the CommManager link but it works just fine running it from the connections tab.
works nice!!!
thanks you very much i really
will use this!!
- Not found 3g connection. Only slow GSM.
- Delete Direct Push button, not adds an additional button to the Comm Manager
0n my tp the app dosent start from the com manager - i thought it didnt install until i found it in a new folder within the programs folder called network center...
so, when i start the app its interface is too tall for the tp - the checkbox is below/behind the software keyboard icon...
so,i dont knnow how to get it to work since what i see is so different from the instructions. can someone offer any guidance? seems t me that the wifi chip needs to be on but it keeps finding available networks and th wifi router doesnt seem to do anything.... yep, am having issues!
Be sure to install it on the TouchPro2, not TouchPro. Even though I think it could work on both VGA and WVGA.
You could give some more information about your device or provide a screenshot.
@general
I've created a Dutch HERE version from wich is a Hybrid from 0.9.2 and 1.0.0.
Already asked what the differences are compared to the file in the first post but so far no response yet. Previous thread can be found HERE.
V1.0.0 can be found HERE.

I am not sure what the difference is. I would guess it is no different since everyone is getting the package from the same place...

The following CAB will also place the WiFi Router on the Comm Manager, it will replace Microsoft Direct Push.
Please follow instructions for it to work properly:
Install At0mAng WiFi Router.cab
Restart your phone
Open Comm Manager
Tap where it reads Internet Sharing to bring up WiFi Internet Sharing, if you tap the On/Off button it will bring up the USB Internet Sharing
Set the Router name and password you would like.
Set the option to always use these settings without asking
Close WiFi Router
Go back to Comm Manager
Restart WiFi Router
You should be able to connect now.

No, the phone has WiFi that should work fine with your home router. This program turns your phone into a WiFi router, so you can connect a laptop to your phone (by WiFi) and get internet access for the laptop when away from home.

and why not just use WMWIFIrouter? does it do the same thing where the data will not be read as tethering?

oh... i like that! lol
Does it provide the tethering charge workaround too? and does it have a crash cleanup? (TP2 is in the mail so I can't test )
When I change the settings, set always use and close, on returning the settings have gone back to default.
How do I change the settings permanently?
A new version is out in the Development and Hacking forum that resolves some issues of this one.

Wireless tether issue...some help

So I have the cyanogen 5.0.5.3 installed and the wireless tether app. When I open the app and start it, on the phone it seems to be active but I have trouble connecting to it from laptop. Also when I enable the wep security on the phone, it doesn't show up as a secured wifi connection when in connect to it.
Any idea on how I can fix this?
Thanks

If your Lenovo has an Intel WiFi card and you're using Microsoft Windows, make sure you are using Intel drivers version 13.1.1.1 and nothing older.
Then do the following on your Nexus One:
1. Install the latest version of android-wifi-tether (as of this posting).
2. Start "Wireless Tether for Root Users".
3. Once the program has started up, hit the "Menu" button.
4. Select "Setup".

"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}

5. While in "Setup", hit the "Menu" button again and select "(Re)-Install binaries/configs".

6. You should get a confirmation that the binaries & configs were re-installed similar to this:
7. At this point, scroll down the "Setup" menu and find "Change LAN" and change it to something different from the default, for good measure. My example shows 10.10.3.0/24 which is an option towards the bottom of the scroll view.
8. Try first with WEP off to see if it'll connect to your Lenovo or iPad. It should work at this point.
Good luck!

Kermee

[GUIDE] Fix Data Connection Drops Caused By GPS [UPDATE 2012-12-08]

Hi All,
This guide is intended to help those of you suffering from data connection issues while using GPS. For example, when GPS is enabled and Google Maps is launched the network connection disconnects from 3G/HSPA and the network connection icon turns grey. Anyways, give this a shot and see if it helps. I have tested it out on my Nexus One using AT&T and it has fixed the issue for me. Also, you don't need to worry about screwing up your phone following this process as you can simply reset the APNs to default without issue :good:
Navigate to APN Settings
Navigate to System Settings > More (under Wireless & Networks) > Mobile Networks > Access Point Names. You should see something similar to this screenshot. If you have previously altered your APNs you should select the "Reset to default" option (this can take a while to complete so be patient!)

Remove unneeded APNs
You only need one APN listed. Since the N1 doesn't have LTE and I don't have StraightTalk I can remove these APNs. Simply click on each of the APNs to be remove and select the "Delete APN" option
Click to collapse
Configure your APN
Select the remaining APN and scroll down to "APN type". You need to change this value from whatever it is currently (in my case it reads "default, supl, mms") to "default, mms" (without quotes!). Select the "Save" option, back out of the settings menu and power off yor phone. DO NOT RESTART, YOU MUST POWER OFF your phone or this might not work! Don't worry if your connection icon turns grey (as shown in the screenshot) as this will be blue after you power on.
Click to collapse
Test it out
Navigate to System Settings > Location Access. If prompted about "Location consent" click "Agree". Wait a few seconds and then launch Google Maps. Confirm that the data connection is not lost by watching the network connection icon. If the icon remains blue with the letter "H" or "E" next to it then you're good! If it didn't work or made things worse you can simply select the "Reset to default" option from the APN Settings (again, this can take a while to complete so be patient!)
Click to collapse
Hopefully this helps! If it does, please consider clicking the "Thanks" button. Also, be sure to support your developers! Even a small donation or a simple thanks can make a huge difference :highfive:

[UPDATE2]
darkshino has pointed out this may break mms. I have update the guide to set the APN type ase "default, mms" as this seems to fix mms and doesn't break GPS/Maps. Also found that powering off rather that rebooting is better (rebooting didn't work when I tried).

It is very likely you were the origin of this; in which case I thank you! I will update the OP to give credit where it is due. I hope you understand I'm not trying to take credit for your contribution, I'm just trying to help out others. Also, I was unable to get GPS working by setting the APN to "default" alone. I had to remove the extra APNs to get GPS working (which is not mentioned in your post).
In fairness, I got the idea to remove the extra APNs from a post I came across in the texasice development thread. I can't remember who initially suggested it so if anyone else out there thinks it may have been their suggestion please let me know and I will gladly give credit where credit is due.
No worries. Its a nice guide :highfive:
Updated the guide to include a fix for mms. Thanks to darkshino for bringing this to my attention.

Slow connection in Sweden (Not LTE related I think)

Ok, so my M8 died on me and I didnt want the M9 since it did not improve over the M8. So I bought a M9+ on Ebay from Asia.
I live in Stockholm and the LTE band 20 (800mhz) is only used in the smaller cities, I get good 4G signal strength. I also get good speed with broadband test about 60 mbits down and 10 up.
But its very, very slow todo anything network related on it. I have tracked it down to a DNS problem, if i install and run this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dnset it will use Google DNS using a local VPN connection and after that the internet connection is very fast. Is the phone using a Asian DNS instead of my ISPs? How can I verify which DNS is being used? The VPN solution above is not a long term solution because of the security risk
Did you check the APN setting and see if it match your carrier?
Do you mean the APN url? Yes, it points to a url on my carriers domain
I really need a way to find out which DNS is being used when I do not use the dnset app mentioned above. Could you guys help me out? The phone is unusable without using the app above. WIth the VPN tunnel active the phone is very fast. But I dont know how to verify that its really a local tunnel like the dev claims
Can't your carrier help?

Thanks, I did look at that program but missed which tab I should use, was under the DNS tab.
It uses the correct DNS(s) so cant be that.
I reseted the APN settings and now It's alot quicker.
I restarted the phone and now its slow again. Ping & DNS reports a DNS of 172.21.120.6. Which seems strange? Reseting APN time around does nothing
I deleted the APN settings and reset to default (If I only reset to default nothing happens) and now I get correct DNS addresses of 130.244.127.161 and 130.244.127.169 which I have confirmed belongs to my ISP.
I am now afraid that the ebay seller have installed some kind of tunnel to spoof my trafic. What do you guys think? This is the ebay seller and item
http://www.ebay.com/itm/221827669983?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649
Another strange thing is that the VPN settings menu is locked with a password that I have not set myself
Go into Recovery and do a factory reset. This will may delete all apks you dont want on your phone. Else reinstall European RUU but you will need Soff and root.

There is no option to reset?
edit: found M9 guide (not plus) and it says to go into recovery mode. Tried that, I just displays a triangle for a few minutes and then im back at the fingerprint login screen.
I did it from the Settings menu instead. Will that reset be as hard as the one from the boot menu? Why is my boot menu missing factory reset?
Alot of questions now, but why is my bootloader locked? Shouldnt all new HTC bootloaders be unlocked by default?
No bootloader is locked normally. To get into recovery you pressed power and Vol Up right? Because every smartphone needs a recovery and i tested it at my M9+, it works.
I press vol down and power to get into the download bootloader (First screen above) I can then go into the booloader (No screen on that above) and then I can go into recovory, but then the phone just displays a warning triangle like the screen above, and then after several minutes it boots the phone back into the lock screen and i can go into the phone with pin or fingerprint. THere is no menu option for hard reset anywhere in those menus?
"Press Vol Up + Power + Home Button (Fingerprint) when the red exclamation appears and youll be inside recovery mode"

That got me a little further, now I get, but it boots me back to the download mode and with the text
"Detecting smart card...
Reboot to ftm mode failed due to NOT_FIND_SMART_IO"
