[Q] Root without getting KNOX flag 0x1 on Exinos? - Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone, my Exynos Note 4 (I am in Europe so it will probably be the "c" version) will be arriving tomorrow and I can't stand an unrooted device (lol) so I was wondering if anyone managed/tried to root the Exynos Note 4 without triggering KNOX (with towelroot or other "safe" root methods)?
I am asking this because as long as there are no custom ROM's available I would rather not void my warranty and as I would like to root it on the first day I won't really have time to check that I don't have any hardware problems so if I will need my warranty I would rather have it there, thanks in advance to anyone that can help me.

Actually, most of the Note-4 on the EU will be N910F with the Qualcomm chip.
Unfortunately, all root methods these days will change the warranty bit

Actually there are multiple versions of Note 4 being sold in Europe (for example in my country I have 3 friends that bought the qualcom one and got different versions, one of them being the "s" version), and as I said I bought an exynos version but I am not sure of the version as I will get the phone in a few hours but right now the exynos versions can only be bought free of carrier (at least in my country) and there are currently only 4 shops that sell the exynos version in my country and I was wondering if anyone tried towelroot (because I think that has the best chance of working and AFAIK it does not trigger KNOX) or other root exploits and managed to root without triggering it?

[Q] current best root method 2/5 n9005

I just ordered my note3 sm-n9005 on sunday (should arrive thursday). and I was wondering what the current best method to root it without invalidating warranty / tripping knox. and installing xposed?
if there isn't support for loading a third party boot loader without tripping knox, what's the best way to back up my system image?
how can I go about restoring it if i seriously mess something up?
can i do a full wipe and restore without a third party boot loader?
can i do a factory restore using external means like odin without tripping knox / invalidating my warranty?
also, does anybody happen to know why samsung abandoned the *REALLY* nice design arrangement of the menu keys being a row of capacitive touch buttons across the bottom of the phone as seen on the galaxy s, s2, original note, and original samsung galaxy tab? - i've had several of these devices (i'm currently upgrading from an original note to a note 3), and I loved the row of capacitive touch keys vs the (pretty dumb imho) physical menu key (that can be easily broken or stuck). for a key you press a billion times a day over 2+ years it occurs to me that you should have something that has minimal mechanical movement to preserve it's functionality. </rant> - but seriously, why?
I know these all sound like n00b questions, but knox threw a wrench into my understanding of how to do this right. on my note i717 i can easily flash stock and twrp via odin, use twrp to back up the system (if and whenever i'd like), and install any compatible rom i please without additional implications... I really wish that the note 3 were that flexible. (and that there were more devs working on software for note 3... I'd really like to see ubuntu touch dual booting on a phone this awesome.).
So, before the phone arrives, you have plenty of time to educate yourself. There are thousands of threads regarding this topic.
Google and XDA are your friends.
Sent from my SM-N9005
first of all do not do any ota updates if you do like i did you can not root without tripping knox..if your lucky and your note comes with an early firmware you have a chance of rooting and not tripping knox.

it all depends on what bootloader you have.but as far as i understand it you can not use twrp or cwm without tripping knox

I bought my device used and was informed that it has the latest ota kitkat updates per about 2 weeks ago. is root not a possibility in this case at all?
you can root if it's still 4.3 but you can not do it without tripping knox...which is the same possition i'm in..my advice is hold off doing any updates or trying to root for a few weeks ...maybe somebody will find a new exploit

is there anything that I can't do if i trigger knox (besides sending my phone to samsung's warranty service). does selinux still work properly if knox is triggered? what's the feature actually FOR (besides voiding warranty)?

I might come a little late - but you seem to be on AT&T - are you certain that N9005 is what you wanted? My feeling was that the T-Mobile version was the only other one (than AT&Ts own, which has locked bootloader, while TMo does not) that could do LTE on AT&T, but I might be wrong

yes, i'm on at&t and it's the sm-n9005 that should arrive at my door tomorrow. the n9005 literature i've read says it is lte enabled, and from what i understand is exactly the same hardware that at&t's own variant uses chip for chip. why would there be a problem... and even if it does come down to it, can't i just flash the at&t modem and be done with it?
You cannot Flash t-mobile modem on a att n9005 and vice versa. Samsung now =dictator, your freedom is slowly becoming....

You will be very surprised
First things on the N9005 - disable security updates and reject any OTA updates, then check your existing firmware. Read in this forum and specifically in the AT&T forum if you can make things work, if you want to root read about knox and warranty.

[Q] Understanding N9X Conventions

I recently purchased a Note 4 dev edition which corresponds to N910V. In browsing through many of the ROMs available, I noticed a lot of them correspond to N9XXX characters, but didn't really understand it very well. Will ROMs that specify a specific N9X name (e.g. N910C, N910F) be useable on the dev edition N910V? Or are there certain kernels or other data I must load onto my phone before tinkering with the ROMs? Thanks for the help in advance.
do you have a knox flag on your device ?
Not sure how to tell that. I plan on trying out this ROM when the device is delivered after all the proper backups, which should allow me to use the TWRP and Odin features to remove Knox if it is an issue. The bootloader of the DE is unlocked, but I do not know if it will have a Knox flag on it or not, nor do I know how to tell.
settings - about device - status - last line should say Device status : Official
also phone info from the play store should read the knox flag directly.
With stock settings it runs Knox 2.2
try phone info from the app store. it should show knox flag 0x0 or blank if there is no knox flag.

That's actually samsung code for their products..
SM-N is for their Galaxy note products,
SM-N900 is galaxy note 3
SM-N910 is galaxy note 4
The last letters is for the variants, like C for global exynos variants, then F & G for snapdragon variants, etc. (that's in note 4)
I think that products code is aplicable since the note 3, since galaxy s4 have code GT-I9500/9505 and then galaxy s5 have code SM-G900
So will S-N910F roms only work on that specific international version of the phone then? Or will other versions like S-N910V be able to load them without bricking as well?

It's saver if you flash rom that is build for your device, 910F rom for 910F device, but if they have same hardware, I think they can work, but there's reason samsung made those variants, so I will not recommend to flash rom for different variants, unless you know what you're doing..

S7 Edge Root - make me sure.

1. Can u tell me what exacly will cost me rooting phone like not working samsung pay, is there more ? I bought phone week ago and probably I am gonna trade him next year when S8 will come out, will stock firmware fix samsung pay or any other problems?
2. If I am rooting phone I'll trip knox but can it be "untripped" by flashing stock firmware?
3. TRWP or CF root is better?
4. What I had to do in developer options?
5. I have traded phone in CEX S6 + £ = S7 (webuy.com) they gave me 2 years warranty but with tripped knox?
There is probably many threads or post about this but all of them are so messed up that I can't find out.

1.rooting will mean that samsung pay does not. OTA upgrades do not work, you will have to flash roms manually and knox will not work.
2.Knox cannot be restored once it is tripped as knox is hardware controlled not software.
3. TWRP is better as you have more future options on your phone but CF root is easier to do.
4. You do not need to do anything in developer options occasional you will be asked to enable usb debugging to grant some apps access to the phone.
5. You will have no official warranty once knox is tripped. Depending on how rigidly knox is enforced some store will still repair the phone under warranty, some will not. It is up to the shop to decide.

Should I update modem/BB/BL/radio?

Hi all.
So, the CM13 shapshot has arrived for the i9505 and I'm considering upgrading my phone. I've been running cm on it since I bought it from new a few years back. Stock android got rooted and replaced without ever upgrading it and as such the modem/baseband/radio (are these 3 words in fact covering the same?) and bootloader has never been updated either. Currently running CM11 M8. According to the app phone info, both baseband and bootloader is I9505XXUBMGA. As far as I can tell from a few searches, this is the latest pre-knox bootloader and from 4.2.2.
I'd prefer to leave the bootloader alone in order to not accidentally tripping knox later on. Should I update the modem/baseband/radio before flashing CM13 (as in do I need to?) or can I just leave it as it is?
Thanks.
I9505/jfltexx (International LTE)
Baseband: I9505XXUBMGA
Bootloader: I9505XXUBMGA
Is the phone under warranty? If not, tripping knox does not matter in my opinion. Also, many of the latest ROMs require an up-to-date bootloader and modem to function properly.

I appreciate your reply.
No, there's no warranty left on the device. Just thinking that the device might be easier to sell eventually if knox is not tripped.
Do you know if the update is needed for 6.x to run properly?
Thanks
If you were looking to resell, you should have done so earlier. A quick look on Swappa shows the S4 can be bought, depending on version, for anywhere from 85-120USD, with the Exynos I9500 available for 180USD. That's a far cry from the 350USD I spent at the end of 2014 for my I9505. In fact, with the exception of the I9500, no international devices are available on Swappa at this time. All available units are either from US carriers or are the I337M, a Canadian model.
Being Swappa, most of these units likely have had Knox tripped. I know the device I purchased did, and I was quite relieved I wouldn't have to deal too much with that headache.
Yes, many 6.x ROMs require an up-to-date bootloader and modem. Ihave seen many posts from s4 and note 3 users where the baseband and imei were null after flashing an MM ROM without an updated bootloader and modem.
As for re-sale, the s4 is not commanding good prices as previously mentioned. The last used s4 sgh-i337m I purchased was in excellent condition for $120 CAD. An advantage with the i337m, i9505, and i9500 over the ATT i337 is an unlocked bootloader.
@audit13: I made a mistake buying my I9505, and focused too much on avoiding the locked bootloader. It's still a good little phone, and it's my backup device still, but if I paid more attention I would have had an I337M instead.
Yeah, the phone in it self is overall fine, just not super aosp compatible.
My I9505's bootloader is not locked, though, been running CM on it since I bought it.
Looks like I am going to look into updating bootloader and baseband before flashing CM13 then.
I appriciate your replies.
The i337m and i9505 are very similar and the same ROMs can often be flashed to both phones. I believe the jfltexx work for both models. The biggest difference between the phones are the frequency bands.
None of the s4 phones have a locked bootloader other than models from AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon as far as I know.
AT&T and Verizon. Sprint doesn't lock bootloaders.

[Q] Magisk and fake Knox 0x0

Premise: I have a rooted Note 4 and this is the first time that I'm trying to better understand Magisk and its functions.
I'm Italian and I'm going to buy the new Galaxy Note 9. In Italy you can take advantage of a "super value program" with which you can give back your old smartphone in order to obtain a cashback on the buy of the new smartphone.
I'd like to give back my Note 4, but I'm afraid that rooted smartphone cannot be accepted (not sure about this point).
For this reason, I'm going to flash back the original firmware, but the problem of Knox 0x1 will be still present. I know about efuse etc (I read a lot about that)... What I need is a way to hide/fake the counter. I read that Magisk was used for this purpose on other "Galaxy smartphones" in order to allow the use of apps like Samsung Pay. My question is (finally): is it possible to use Magisk to hide/fake the Knox counter on the official firmware of my Note 4?
No, after note 3 there is no way to hide knox status.
