Anyone experiencing weird lag on the note4?
I bought two note4 for my lines since one was to be given to father. I rooted both phones on the same day of purchase. I realized that for my phone, I'm experiencing some weird lag moments. Sometimes I would type fast enough to finish the sentence but the keys don't register until a few seconds later. Sometimes scrolling through a page, it would stop and wouldn't move until a few seconds later.
I'm hoping that this is just software issue. Can't wait til we have a custom recovery and rom to flash.

Have you updated yet? While I don't have my Note yet, I have read that the update increases battery life, and also fixes lag issues.
Did you install xposed and wanam?
Daammnn...we got a bada** over here, rooted both phones at the same day of
purchase.
If I buy a new phone I would use it until the warranty expires.

Rooted here with exposed and wanam. Even with new update, it's Extremely laggy. It was laggy before Wanam. Didn't use much before rooting.

Uh seriously? I hope you're being sarcastic. If not, why are you on XDA?
LAGGING everywhere on Build KTU84P N910FXXU1ANIE
Loving my Note 4... but
IT IS VERY LAGGY!!!
As it is, this incredible phone is completely spoiled by a jerky experience, and this is using Google Apps which are usually very smooth, like Play Store, Gmail, Hangouts, Google Plus, and other well made apps like Pulse and Facebook... all usually very smooth, but not with the Note4 I got yesterday. My nexus 5 was much smoother, with a much slower processor.
Do any of you in the UK have the update yet, I have not had it yet?
Cheers
Mark
You guys should read the "root and what works" thread, because this was already solved. Wanam causes a conflict with Shealth and you have to go into Wanam, security hacks, disable secure storage. then go to settings/apps and clear s health data and cache and then reboot I've done this on the latest update, and now have no lag issues

Uh? Do I need to root my phone in order to join XDA?
Also I would appreciate what factory ROM has 'served' me, and I would actually use the warranty given for hardware repairs since I'm a clumsy person.
English is not my first language so where do you mean 'sarcastic'?
Sorry.

Ah yes, the ability to search and read has been getting worse and worse.
I'm also getting random lag, even before root, xposed and wanam. Seems to be the same as the s4, s5 and note 2 previously. Once custom kernels are out with better scheduling, it should be remedied.

My phone is not rooted yet... if it cannot work without lag with the stock rom, I will not keep it and it will go back to EE... so I am hoping the update comes very soon. I suggest everyone who has just got their Note 4 does NOT root it until they are satisfied it works as well as they expect it to... it's a lot of money and you have the right to return it within 2 weeks if ordered online (in the UK/EU).

This is the United States.. If I don't like the phone, even rooted... I can return it.. If they don't let me, just file a credit card claim. I paid the phone, I own it.. I can do whatever I want to the software.
I hate it when people jump in scared of Knox or voiding warranty.

Will check it out.. I don't even use s-health so I didn't think this was the issue.
No lag here
Mine is VERY laggy, throughout all the menus in comaprison to my note3, running cm11 or hyperdrive.
I have xposed (which I think is the main issue, but I need it to run xprivacy), nova, the new firmware update, its rooted (post update) and wanam installed in order to get shealth working.
The phone itself is great, but the over all software implementation is pretty poor. No way a device from a major manufacturer, should be outdone in responsiveness by some AWESOME hobbyists.
With the same setup, as my note3 (side by side), screens change slower, scrolling is slower, and apps open a tad slower. The overall experience is just no where near as smooth as quick.
Now I am comparing 1yr of ROM development (hyper and temasek) vs a 2day release(stock note4), so of course some tweaks need to be made.
If you have a note3 rooted, might want to wait a few weeks before dropping $750.
Also I had to manually up the core speed to 2.7 in faux clock, mine was set at 2.3 for some reason.
The screen is AWESOME, the speaker is surprisingly nice, build quality and feel are top notch (no gaps, or peeling paint, or loose buttons!!!), and the camera really is nice upgrade that I didn't expect I would be happy about.
I only get 42,921 on antutu, which was what I get on my note3 at 2.3ghz ( not over clocked)
That's pretty bad overall performance out the box IMO.
Disabled a lot for me to get rid of the lag. Tons of background apps. Buy main resource hog is the tmobile apps

I recently purchased an S4 (switched from an iPhone 5) and am generally enjoying it. However, the phone feels a lot more sluggish than it should, given its substantial hardware. I rooted the phone and installed TWRP, and am mulling over custom ROMs now.
My question is regarding the removal of the resource hog known as TouchWiz. If I understand correctly, the only way to remove it (and see any real benefits) is to flash a non-TouchWiz kernel and then an AOSP ROM, yeah? If I'm wrong, I'd appreciate a little guidance on what needs to be done to restore a more "stock Android" feel.
Yeah flashing a rom will do it
But try nova launcher first

Try a custom kernel also. Most do see a smoother experience after switching. Otherwise just do a nandroid and flash some custom ones. Then can always revert back if needed.
I feel ya on this phone. I came from a 2 yr old galaxy s2 and this thing runs worse than it did. Wonder why this super spec phone is so glitchy. Time to flash rom should fix it.

I thought that. After 3 generations of samsungs, ive owned. I figured its part of them. So I rooted/debloated/greenified and its running great. Im very picky on how my computers/phones run. I cant stand lag, and will not have it. I was just let down that the out of box "Next Big thing" Had the same lags as the sgs1. Yes we on xda can fix it but what about the average consumer? Hell no. Or would the average consumer not notice?

I would think the average consumer would notice. The lag is considerable out of the box however it seems to not be 100% of the devices. Some have reported smooth operation since day one. Mine was not smooth but very laggy. The MDL didn't get rid of it and Samsung really needs to get on the stick and should be embarrassed to release the device in that state. Obviously I fixed the lag but with the specs it should of been smooth as silk out of the box. Personally I don't think Touchwiz is the issue but lack of optimization of the features.

If it is fixable by flashing a custom kernel/rom or custom launcher (reported by some) than don't see how it can be a faulty phone. Not by way of hardware anyways.
Guys where is the lag? Are we talking just scrolling and stuff around on the honescreen? And just with TW launcher? Or in other places like running apps, browsing, etc

Ok well yeh that sounds like a bad phone.I say that because mine is stock and dont have that problem.this is the fastest phone ive ever had. And of course you shouldnt have to install a rom to get your phone "right",so thats another reason I say bad phone.it should fly right out the box,esp bone stock before you add app s. I have over 200 and it zooms
Lag was in and out of apps. Returning home. Scrolling through screens stock weather widget would take a few seconds to appear. All over felt quirky. After a lil tweaking it runs great

That is why i specifically said "not bad hardware wise anyways" since many are fixing it by flashing custom.
I do see the point you are trying to make and not trying to create an argument so please don't think that. You are lucky to get a smooth running phone right out of the box. :good:

For starters I disabled some features. Went into svoice and disabled double tap home button. to open svoice. That adds lag to returning to home as it waits a few ms waiting for 2nd tap. Rooted of course and debloated the rom did a lot. No swype! Its laggy on everything. Plus a few days gone by and kernel & everything just setteling in. I have not flashed kernel or messed with cpu. Speeding up animations I've always felt it makes phone really glitchy so I leave it at 1.
Edit greenify also. disabled few apps like The Score that runs always. Greenify is a must. It should come stock

Help, i've had my Note 3 just about a month now and ever since I've had it I get seriously bad lag when I'm updating apps from Play Store.
It's that bad that if I update all apps and there are 3/4 apps I have to wait until they are done otherwise the phone gets that laggy I can't do anything.
I haven't done a reset but I'm thinking I probably will need too, unless anyone else knows what it could be?
Thanks

Happens to me, I don't really care for it because it only updates on WiFi. My phone gets stuttery when it installs the update more than when it is downloading. Also to note, it's recurrent on 4.3 and 4.4.2.

Doing a reset won't solve the issue, it's more that the system is focused on getting the install to be quickly and painlessly finished and causes other processes to slow down due to CPU demand changes. I'm running a custom ROM and kernel and still get these problems, and before I was on stock 4.3 so I can confirm it's not your hardware or personal configuration issue.
Also when your launcher lags, it's due to the fact that you're on the launcher but it has to do a live app removal from the drawer and then reinsertion of the app.

Thanks for that explanation, that does make sense now, however coming from previous phones (Sony Z1 and HTC One) these never had that issue and the Note 3 is more powerful, im a bit confused. So basically it's Samsung's software that's the cause?

I noticed something on my TMob Note 3, I have Lookout security pre-installed and I see slight improvement if it is not scanning apps after every install and if it is disabled. Can someone check if you are seeing any improvements without Lookout Security or is it just my placebo?
Also, the Lookout backup upload slows both my phone and the internet. Any idea why that is happening? Is it uploading everything again and again or just the changes?

My other Samsung phones don't have anything installed and still lags.
However, I do have some security apps installed to check for viruses, but the thing is, it only checks after the app is installed, not during install, and the lag spikes in only during the install and not after.
I use Avast Mobile Security to scan my apps.

As a TF700t owner I haven't noticed any lag from updating apps on the Note 3....but that's most likely because I'm used to a device that becomes entirely useless when updating apps (or doing anything in the background, really) because of an I/O issue...
Devices will always get a bit sluggish when updating apps, as they need to access multiple system and app files.

I don't have a good first impression of my S6.
The stock rom eats 8G of the internal storage.
It has a terrible lag, and jitters all over the place. Even just scrolling up and down in the settings screen is laggy. The lag in Chrome gets very frustrating very quickly
Too much bloatware. A whole microsoft suite (among other things) that I will never use and cannot uninstall
Touchwiz launcher, its not really great
On the plus side
the finger scanner is good.
The screen is really nice, but I suppose rendering all those pixels is whats causing it to lag like crazy.
Pleased that samsung made a theme chooser. At last we can remove the awful default turquoise colours.
But I immediately know I'm going to have to root and put a custom rom on here to get it working to my satisfaction .... is there any ROM recommendations to remove all lags, stutters and bloatware?
Is it just me? I am surprised I don't see a ton of people complaining about this
Im on xtrestolite deo mod and have no of the problem i had with stock u could always get titanium backup and freeze all that bloat might help. I know that when i ran stock it would often run out of ram. Now i have betwewn 1 and 1.4gb free.
Wait for the Marshmallow update and judge it again then. Samsung redesigned the whole TouchWiz thing launcher, icons, performance everything. From what I read from the beta is really promising and fast.
Never saw any lag, stock or otherwise. I did occasionally have some low ram redraws on stock, but on roms those are long gone. Maybe take a look in your application manager at what's running and see if there's any unnecessary junk running that's eating your ram. Did it start or persist from any old software, or show up from new software ie updates?

Me too, no lag at all, with stock BUT... if you run MM BETA and then go back to 5.1.1 you will see a very "slow device"
This phone does lag like hell, I had one about 7 months a go and that wasn't too bad.
Picked one up last week and the difference is shocking now, have tried different launchers and no difference.
Makes me laugh how Samsung can't seem to make a phone that is smooth. I have even swapped this out for another one.
All this guff about no more lag in the press conference.
Never had any issues even before I rooted and put a stock modified rom, only thing I would have liked better is battery life, but I get a days use out of it atleast
No offense, but anyone saying the S6 doesn't lag or stutter must either not know what we're talking about or have low fps eyes ?. This phone is an absolute lagfest on stock firmware.
Try scrolling in Google+ or even Tapatalk and you'll see dropped frames all over the place.
Just about the only thing that helps is flashing a custom kernel and enabling enforced mode (try Unikernel for size). That makes a world of difference.
yes I have the s6 since 4 months now. before I had a oneplus one. this was fast. but the s6 is very Laggy. however it has the best benchmarks but the Ui it's definitely Laggy on every edge. so I had a lot of other devices before. for me the most qualcom devices are running smoother. but there are some other positive aspects on the s6

Lag?? U sure, mate? I'm using the S6 for more than a few months now and there is no lag in the UI. Maybe some minor frame drops occasionally (I'm sensitive to those , most people don't notice them), but no lag. It's not normal.
Mine is stock with some native apps disabled. Also I jave turned off the smart manager protection. And I can compare it with Nexus 5. I'v had many Android devices and I know what I'm talking about.

I've also owned countless Android devices (including Nexus). Most recently I came from an OPO and a Z3C before the S6. GUI lag/stutter is a pet peeve of mine with Android, and while the OPO was almost perfect after some optimization and the Z3C turned out OK, the S6 is frankly a joke in comparison. Especially considering its theoretically superior performance.

Do you always give up so easily?
I think I'll try the Samsung marshmallow firmware, cheers for the tip @Riardon ... if its just the same I'll try some custom roms.
I'm kinda glad others confirm the lag/stuttering and its not just me.
For comparison, the phone I am replacing is a S5 running Exodus rom, there is absolutely zero lag or frames dropped in any scrolling or animations. It really makes the S6 look bad. Not what I expected as the S5 is like 18 months old now.
Here is a quick video I made for the non-believers out there. S6 is on the left. It doesn't matter that the video is not in focus (because of my finger getting in the way), the point I am trying to make is scrolling should be smooth on a new, expensive Android phone, I am astonished at how bad it is on the S6. Other places in the phone are also bad, Chrome is the worst though.

Keep in mind, however, if you do root you will most likely trip the knox counter on your device. This could cause some problems with warranty, and you would not be able to use Samsung pay on the device. If these things don't matter to you. Rooting is okay.

Rooting/flashing ROMs/kernels can be done without tripping knox by using the engineering bootloader. You'll find great tutorials here on xda.
My S6 has never lagged, not even on stock. I found it to be smooth in generally and I am someone who looks at framedrops and any other possible slowdowns.
Also guys don't forget to check your apps. It may sound weird but some well known apps causing some extra lag on top of what TouchWiz has. For example I found out that SwiftKey on my devices creates some extra lag and it's slower than other keyboards. Some apps are just not optimized well and this the reason some guys see worse lags and stutters than others. This one is tricky to determine those apps but you have to experiment. TouchWiz as it is now yes it's laggy but not worse than older TouchWin on S5 for example. Still needs work but Marshmallow is promising. Wait until then guys you may surprised pleasantly. Unfortunately some apps on Android running like sh***t and we blame the phone sometimes. And remember to always keep your phone at minimal. Disable all extra stuff you don't use and use only the apps you actually use often or truly need. This is for all phones not only for this one.

If I understand correctly using the engineering bootloader results in the loss of use of the fingerprint scanner.

Hi guys
I am a long time galaxy user. I have rooted every phone i had. I used s4 s5 note 4 s6 edge note 5 and now s7 edge. Rooting is the first thing i did on all these phones out of the box. So pretty much i never experienced a non rooted galaxy. All these phones are very powerful in terms of hardware. Despite of the powerful hardware all these phones never performed all smooth with the ui navigation or in terms of responsiveness . I understand with s4 s5 and note 4 having old touchwiz, but even with the redesigned touchwiz on s6 edge and note 5 ui is still not smooth. I experienced lag with scrolling and navigating the ui. By the way i removed all bloat i could on all devices. Used xposed mods that supposedly should "increase" the performance.
Last week i purchased s7 edge. As usual i rooted the second i came home.. Removed bloat and have been using all week. Guess what same experience.. Laggy ui. What i mean by lag is.. Scrolling is not smooth. I press the home button while playing a game it Takes a second To come to home screen. I end the call and it takes a good 1 second to come back to previous screen. Keyboard sometimes takes a second to show up. The animation are not smooth. All this lag is present 40% of the time here and there . This is the same type of lag i experienced with all other devices.
So. I taught of giving the s7 edge a second chance without rooting or any mods. Just stock. I have been using the phone since 2 days.. Guess what.. The phone is perfect and 100% lag free 100% of the time.
Now i m in a dilemma of what to do.. But i do really miss some root apps. Is it just me that had this problem with all the phones i used.. I m really disappointed on rooting now. Do i have to sacrifice smoother ui for rooted apps.
Please share your thoughts.

you can try to decrease lag without root by removing all the animations or at least reducing animations from 1.0 to .5....but i actually turn them completely off. This can be done in developer options. You can enable developer options by tapping on the build number 5 consecutive times in the settings

Strange, I've only ever seen the problem with dodgy root methods, then again it's been a while since I had a samsung phone. Have you tried a full factory reset before rooting?
That's weird, how can it be more laggy while rooted? I just received mine today, and was thinking about rooting it straight away but I've read that tripping knox=no Samsung Pay -and maybe other things I don't know about yet-, so I will wait a little bit and read around to get myself properly informed.
BTW I come from a rooted S4, and it is butter smooth -running the GPE ROM-. As for the 1 second lag when pressing the home button, check if you have any double-press actions configured -like opening the cam, recent apps, google now, flashlight...-, if you configure a duoble-press action you get that 1 second before the one-press action is executed, as that's what the terminal waits to detect/check for a double-press.

Home button lag is only one of the many lag issues and i m aware of the double press home button issue.. But its not what i mean.. I mean actual unresponsiveness.
Don't see how just root can cause lag
One of the apps you use that requires root is probably the issue

Just trying to help haha, does the root itself cause the lag? Maybe it's caused by the method by which you have removed the bloatware. If it isn't then I'm out of ideas, perhaps try an alternate root method.
Install echoerom,
No lag here when i was on stock rom rooted. Now im on echorom and its flys

Root doesn't have anything to do with lag. If you use the stock ROM with just root access and some root apps it should perform exactly the same as an unrooted phone, unless the root apps you use misbehaving.
That being said, this is the first phone I don't feel the need to root it. I thought about it many times and I once wanted to just do it, but as I downloaded the necessary stuff I realised I don't need it. Package disabler pro lets me disable apps I don't use and block this let's me remove ads. Not quite as efficient as adaway but efficient enough to not be bothered too much with ads.

So factory reset and root. Check for any lag if none occurs then install some of the root apps, if lag still doesn't occur rinse and repeat. Tedious but just because apps are popular does not mean they won't occasionally play up on new hardware.

How about trying the Chainfire Auto-CF method, instead of the TWRP? Maybe that would give a cleaner root
It'll definitely be one of those apps or mods. Root itself won't affect performance at all.
Hi all,
My phone performance is terrible, everything runs slow and lagging since I took the update. Phone performance was very good before. Anyone else experience this and have any ideas to bring performance back to par?
Thanks for any help.
Factory reset or full wipe after updating to a new firmware. Also, do not restore Google apps, just start from a scratch.
I also have serious lag, it feels like a budget phone. I've had this phone since it launched, and installed every update without precaution. This is the first time experiencing these issues.
Frame rate is terrible, especially while scrolling. Delays in pressing buttons or launching apps have grown from milliseconds to sometimes two or three seconds. No other problems(aside from poor design choices). It feels like aggressive power throttling, not memory issues.
As soon as I saw that so much manual power management has been replaced by a "learning" system, I'm skeptical that the usual fixes will do anything for my problems, especially considering there is no other malfunction. Anyone else?

Samsung Galaxy s8 SM-G950W. Yes. Ever since the update, my Samsung is losing files., running slow and unable to use previously used apps. Substranum, fonts etc.
It's Samsung way of saying - "Buy galaxy S10"
I didn't fell any difference at all in performance.

Well, that's what I was waiting to hear. If ppl aren't universally having the issue, then a factory reset may cure the problem. I'll give it a try soon.
Yes i just got bad performance after installing pie (custom rom, so i always factory reset or it wont work) but yeah after 14 days my phone start to slowing down like old smartphone and the apps is not starting correctly (e.g i must start magisk manually or the root wont work (the app cant detect if phone is rooted even when magisk hide is off)).
I try the LightROM and ALEXIS and both have this problem (performance way worse on lightrom). I know this isnt their fault but the samsung fault (maybe because its early relase? Or...).
Note : performance is normal in the first day, but after 14-30 days the phone start to acting weirdly (the apps behave weirdly) dunno why.
Btw i use SM-G950FD
After restarting about 5 times, then manually clearing cache partition, I was able to get smooth performance. Unfortunately, I still have to restart at least once a day to prevent lagging animation. This is with light usage: streaming, facebook, email.
I turned on "reduce animations" in advanced features, and set the animation scales to 1.5 with dev options. This seems to help prolong smooth operation, but I still have to restart daily. Next step is factory reset, I have a lot to backup...
fresh install thru odin and start all over again is really good solution. at the beginning i also experiencing lag
Mine has an issue of having the fingerprint not working after it was changed. I have to do one of the following:
1. Restart and boot via safe mode then if it works, reboot again
2. Restore Settings from synced backup
3. Reset Settings
So much of a hassle.... I am thinking of rooting this soon.

Had the same problem so flashed official firmware (for my carrier, downloaded from sammobile) with Odin. This part can be done without of rooting your phone.
Do this first (back up your data before as clear flash will delete everything), and test after if it works well. If not, root it (https://forum.xda-developers.com/sa...w-to/guide-root-install-twrp-samsung-t3747535) and install adaway from xda labs.
If you root the phone or install TWRP, e-fuse will break and you cannot go back after that. Warranty will be void and the Samsung fit app won't work anymore.
Fortunately, there are workarounds on a rooted phone (https://tinyurl.com/yy37gnwv) so that is not a big deal, at least for me.
Not sure when you root it if wave pay services will work so do some research first.

Has your lag subsided after time? Mine appears after a night's sleep. It never fails: Restart in the morning, smooth scrolling all day. Next morning, laggy, stuttering scrolling until I restart again. I've uninstalled all unused apps and left power mode on high performance. No change. As soon as I wake up, animation lags like a budget phone. Everything else is reliable, just not the animation.
Of course, I don't actually know what's going on, but I'm willing to bet that this new power management system that we can't control is to blame. If I have to go through all the odin, etc steps, I may just roll back to oreo. Pie is prettier, but I want my smooth operation back.

S10e gets similar reception to my A8(2018). When I got the A8 I had a S8 before that, and i don't remember there being any difference in signal. I live in poor signal area, so if a phone had bad signal, I'd probably remember because I owuldn't have any signal at all.
This is really quite unacceptable. I took the OTA update and the lagging began. I've never had an issue with an OTA update. I've never done a factory reset after an OTA update either. Flashing custom ROM is different but this is from Samsung...
Does anyone have a solution that doesn't involve daily reboots or a factory reset? I just find that really inconvenient.

Yes, I agree. It's hard to know at whom who to point the finger. Google, Samsung, or both. Regardless, it's very disappointing, and hurts my impression of both companies.
I'm currently allowing the phone to run for 7 days to see if the root method listed above by robyos may be feasible for my tmo s8.
If manually restarting is the only hurdle for you, it can now be set to restart automatically (I guess they anticipated this?) Settings > device care > three dots > auto restart.
It feels like a duct-tape band-aid, but it's there. After my 7 day test, I'll probably give this auto-restart a try. However, I'm concerned about the terribly annoying tmo jingle at each restart.

I'm thinking the problem may be googles not Samsung's...I had a OnePlus 5 for almost 2 years. At some point after the pie update it would stutter while scrolling or during animations intermittently. Even a factory reset didn't fix it. The phone was still fast but it was aesthetically annoying seeing the stuttering.
I drown the phone in the ocean on vacation this month and had to replace it so I got a used s8. I haven't had the same issue with scrolling but I've only had it for a couple weeks so far on a fresh wipe. It had some "normal" Samsung lag that the OnePlus didn't have while opening apps and it doesn't keep nearly as much in memory (4gb vs 8 GB RAM). But I'm still thinking the problem may be with pie itself since people were complaining about stuttering on both Samsung and OnePlus phones.
Hopefully my s8 is not affected and it's only certain ones experience it.

Wow! It's sad to hear an 8gb phone would still have the same issue. I wonder if this has to do with power management. Perhaps it's squeezing a tiny percentage of battery life out of saving some frames. It drives me crazy and gives me a headache. I wish they'd provide a simple switch for whatever this is.
This os feels like they ventured into breaking what works in an endless quest to fix what wasn't broken. Perhaps some team of programmers is celebrating minute improvements, but it's coming at the expense of the consumer, who never signed up to be the guinea pig. Each update seems to remove or break basic reliability and functionality that we paid for. I feel like I paid a premium price to become a software tester.
So reboots don't seem to fix the lag I'm experiencing when opening and closing certain apps. This phone was plenty fast before for me. Other issues are present now too. Auto adaptive display brightness doesn't work as well. I also really think it's sheet that you can't disable GPS and have the battery saving mode anymore! WTF Samsung.
