The launcher redraws are killing me.

Hi
Before I start let me tell you that I just love this phone. It's amazing and super snappy.. Almost.
However the launcher redraws are so bad on this one.
Now this is my first Android cell, so I'm not sure if it's a Android issue or S3 issue.
Just a simple scenario. If I go to Play Store browse some apps, see few videos for say 5 mins max and hit the Home button, the launcher would redraw.
It easily takes about 5-6 seconds. Sometimes the home screen would appear in a second but If I hit the app drawer button, it would load for almost 4-5 embarrassing.
Now I know there are few solutions posted for it, but frankly I paid Samsung to do that for me. And to a noob like me, it's not very simple.
It's unbelievable how bad the problem is.
I think just locking it in the Memory, would solve the issue.
Why hasn't Samsung fixed it yet?
It's embarrassing that my old iTouch (I hate Apple btw.) could get out of heavy games within a second.
Why is this beast so laggy? Everyday I face this issue for 5-6 times.
It's driving me mad.
To be honest everytime I browse from more than 10 mins, I feel scared.
Will Sammy ever fix it or the only option is to go through the complex process posted in some other thread.
I'm seriously disappointed in this regard.
I'm on stock ICS, rooted btw.

I used to get some hard core redraws until I froze a bunch of apps I didn't need.. boom now the max redraw I'd have would take like 1sec and that's always the wether widget.

I agree, seems odd to me that samsung didn't lock TW into memory. I'm using Apex and while the problem isn't fully gone, it's much better than it was. They should have done a better job with the stock launcher imo.

I've also disabled lots of sammy apps (not frozen them).
Can you tell the main culpits?

I haven't had a launcher redraw since 1974 (ok, slight exaggeration). I have always rooted (there are lots of fixes for redrawers) but yes, JB fixes it.

I also downloaded Ram Manager Pro, as it has a "lock launcher in memory" option.
WHile that might have helped ( or just placebo) , but the problem is still there and I'm facing it a lot of times.

Are you using a custom Rom or still on stock? How about kernel? If you are rooted you can use titanium backup to freeze a lot of apps which will free up available RAM reducing redraws.

Use all in one toolbox. Goto boot speed up and see what 3rd party crap app is taking up your resources on boot up.

I'm rooted, but everything stock. And I intend to keep it that way.
Really don't want any other ROm or Kernal as I'm quite satisfied with the Stock ones.
I use Nova launcher btw.

Thanks for the suggestion. But I do not think it'll solve the issue.
Also I want all the bells and whistles. What's the point of this mighty hardware if I have to turn off the animations and fancy stuff.
I might just get a basic Android phone.

you don't sound happy with stock, maybe you should have a go at the latest LI5 jb leaks, the odin version seems to me to be the easiest way, takes about 5 mins literally.
Rumour has it that the official will be out sometime this week as an official update, but only on international roms i think.
I think if you want to update officially, you would need to flash via ODIN the international version of ICS which is Samsung official, and that will update when the time is right. if you are on a specific carrier version then they might take a while longer to push the updates to you! (at least that is what i am led to believe!)
By the way, i have never experienced any redraw problems from TW either on galaxy s2 or s3 using stock or custom roms. the JB roms are really smooth too.

Latest leaked JellyBean ROMs give 100 MB more available RAM, which is desperately needed on this phone. Should ease your redraw problems. Try it out.

I wish redraws were the worst problem - browser quitting on me is a bloody nightmare...

Not sure why you people have all of these problems? maybe its an app you have installed or something? I dont get any 5 second redraws or browser crashing.

[Q] Lag / Stutter - Nexus 4

I've been having this issue for a while, occasionally the phone would lag/stutter when simply swiping through home screens or the apps drawer (With no applications open) it would still run games and apps perfectly smooth though. Only way to fix the lag is to turn wi-fi off and back on, restart the phone, or wait for the lag to go away. Any thoughts on this? has anyone been experiencing this? I tried searching the forum, but couldn't find anyone experiencing this.

you might be better off trying a factory reset tbh. this hasnt been a vocalized issue

Do you have a constant wifi connection during the lag?
On my xperia arc it connects and immidatly disconnects again and because of this the lag appears..

no wi-fi issues, everything works fine, just lag when swiping through home screens and menus.

Did a factory reset but lag still occurred occasionally.
If you have a Google Play Music widget on your home screen, that may be the cause of the occasional lag. I removed the widget and so far no lag.

This is normal for an Android phone regardless of clockspeed, number of cores or GPU power.

um, no....THAT is not normal. That may have been normal when the nexus 1 came out, but not at all now.

Never had this issue with my previous devices and others seem to be not having this issue, so I don't think it is normal for an Android to behave this way.

I'll add my voice to this thread.
I've had mine since the weekend. Yesterday night, it started stuttering, in exactly the way you said. I restarted, it went away for a bit, then came back. I tried killing all running applications, made no difference. Another restart fixed it and its smooth as it was again.
Wonder if it is the WiFi causing it?
Incidentally, I was reading some custom kernels fixed the problem for some, but I'd rather not get back into all that nonsense (I've had enough flashing ROMs to last a lifetime thus far).

What's happening in that video is not normal. Everything does appear to remain stock so just keep searching until you fix it. No butter to be found there!

I only get this initially when I restart it and when its on. Swiping first time stutters. Then all ok

So your phone is not rooted and you haven't flashed anything on it? Maybe you can remember when this started and you install some app , maybe it causes this? If so this is not normal! go to the thread dediacated to factory re-flash , this is the only option then

Phone is not rooted or flashed. Might be an issue with one of the apps but it would be very hard to isolate the issue. I have requested a replacement device from Google since I couldn't figure out the cause of it.

Mine does stutter ocasionally but thought that is normal... In xda-app it stutter on almost every single scroll.

It has no problems running apps, perfectly smooth, no lag at all. The stutter only occurs occasionally when simply scrolling through the home screen or app drawer.

It's normal because it's Android.
Android lags. And will forever. It lagged on the G1, it lags on the N4. It will lag on the N5.
It will lag until Google decides to fix Android.
All the people who claim that their device doesn't lag are lying. Simple as that.

Weird lag experience on the phone.

Anyone experiencing weird lag on the note4?
I bought two note4 for my lines since one was to be given to father. I rooted both phones on the same day of purchase. I realized that for my phone, I'm experiencing some weird lag moments. Sometimes I would type fast enough to finish the sentence but the keys don't register until a few seconds later. Sometimes scrolling through a page, it would stop and wouldn't move until a few seconds later.
I'm hoping that this is just software issue. Can't wait til we have a custom recovery and rom to flash.

Have you updated yet? While I don't have my Note yet, I have read that the update increases battery life, and also fixes lag issues.

Did you install xposed and wanam?

Rooted here with exposed and wanam. Even with new update, it's Extremely laggy. It was laggy before Wanam. Didn't use much before rooting.

Loving my Note 4... but
IT IS VERY LAGGY!!!
As it is, this incredible phone is completely spoiled by a jerky experience, and this is using Google Apps which are usually very smooth, like Play Store, Gmail, Hangouts, Google Plus, and other well made apps like Pulse and Facebook... all usually very smooth, but not with the Note4 I got yesterday. My nexus 5 was much smoother, with a much slower processor.
Do any of you in the UK have the update yet, I have not had it yet?

You guys should read the "root and what works" thread, because this was already solved. Wanam causes a conflict with Shealth and you have to go into Wanam, security hacks, disable secure storage. then go to settings/apps and clear s health data and cache and then reboot I've done this on the latest update, and now have no lag issues

Also I would appreciate what factory ROM has 'served' me, and I would actually use the warranty given for hardware repairs since I'm a clumsy person.

Ah yes, the ability to search and read has been getting worse and worse.

I'm also getting random lag, even before root, xposed and wanam. Seems to be the same as the s4, s5 and note 2 previously. Once custom kernels are out with better scheduling, it should be remedied.

My phone is not rooted yet... if it cannot work without lag with the stock rom, I will not keep it and it will go back to EE... so I am hoping the update comes very soon. I suggest everyone who has just got their Note 4 does NOT root it until they are satisfied it works as well as they expect it to... it's a lot of money and you have the right to return it within 2 weeks if ordered online (in the UK/EU).

This is the United States.. If I don't like the phone, even rooted... I can return it.. If they don't let me, just file a credit card claim. I paid the phone, I own it.. I can do whatever I want to the software.
I hate it when people jump in scared of Knox or voiding warranty.

Will check it out.. I don't even use s-health so I didn't think this was the issue.

Mine is VERY laggy, throughout all the menus in comaprison to my note3, running cm11 or hyperdrive.
I have xposed (which I think is the main issue, but I need it to run xprivacy), nova, the new firmware update, its rooted (post update) and wanam installed in order to get shealth working.
The phone itself is great, but the over all software implementation is pretty poor. No way a device from a major manufacturer, should be outdone in responsiveness by some AWESOME hobbyists.
With the same setup, as my note3 (side by side), screens change slower, scrolling is slower, and apps open a tad slower. The overall experience is just no where near as smooth as quick.
Now I am comparing 1yr of ROM development (hyper and temasek) vs a 2day release(stock note4), so of course some tweaks need to be made.
If you have a note3 rooted, might want to wait a few weeks before dropping $750.
Also I had to manually up the core speed to 2.7 in faux clock, mine was set at 2.3 for some reason.
The screen is AWESOME, the speaker is surprisingly nice, build quality and feel are top notch (no gaps, or peeling paint, or loose buttons!!!), and the camera really is nice upgrade that I didn't expect I would be happy about.
I only get 42,921 on antutu, which was what I get on my note3 at 2.3ghz ( not over clocked)
That's pretty bad overall performance out the box IMO.

Disabled a lot for me to get rid of the lag. Tons of background apps. Buy main resource hog is the tmobile apps

Lag after 5.1.1 update

My note 4 used to be smooth , in fact it was the smoothest device i have ever seen but after update all gone and it return to be samsung device again with all lags and bugs , any scrolling in any part of the phone even in apps must have lags , anyone have this problem and can help ?

Firstly, did you update via Odin from a stock rom or from a custom rom? You may want to backup the stuff on your internal storage (such as Whatsapp chats, photos, music, videos, app data etc) using Carbon, booting into recovery after updating using Odin and selecting full wipe and wipe cache. That should fix your problems but of course it'll wipe EVERYTHING on your phone.
EDIT: Not literally "everything", just your personal data. "Everything" that you added since you got it.

Yes i updated with odin from stock rom
Did full wipe after that then did full wipe again after discovering this lag but still no difference

Everything? It won't delete OS, it's not formatting And the fact some people have problems with notification panel's lag and some not maybe is caused by a rubbish in system files, which is not deleted during reflashing ROM? (just my theory)
But for now, if you don't want to have that lag try to change the unlocking method from fingerprint to any other.

The lag still remains unresolved after updating to 5.1.1
Sometimes, there is a massive lag when pulling down the notifications bar. And sometimes when I press the multi task button, it doesn't show up until I exit the app, then only it will pop up. While using my device, all f a sudden, the phone locks itself and brings me back to my lock screen. Sometimes, waking and locking the phone also lags.
Am I the only one experiencing this? Or is there more people that experience what I'm going through?

i have exactly the same problems 5.1.1 is not bug free at all and public wifi at my school doesnt work with 5.1.1 touchwiz but AOSP 5.1.1 ROM doesnt have any of that problems so i think samsung will realese some minor update in the future to fix all of this bugs.

Yeah, my device lags like crazy sometimes. And it's pissing me off.. I hope Samsung will release the update real soon...

i know that that is the solution for the problem i saw it in genereal thread but i want to use my phone normally with fingerprint scnner enabled!

How to disable fingerprint scanner? I mean, diabale as in completely disable the function or just don't use fingerprint on the lockscreen?

I have the fingerprint scanner enabled only in unlocking the private mode not the lock screen , but the lag everywhere in the system including scrolling in fb

That's strange, as honestly, in the last hours since I installed 5.1.1 my Note 4 910C *finally* feels like the premium device experice I've been wanting.
I've loved the phone since I got it at launch, coming from a Galaxy S2, but it's only today that it absolutely flies. Zero lag. Fantastic RAM management. Ultra responsive across the board.
I didn't even do a factory reset after the install, which I almost always do ... just haven't felt the need and since its running so beautifully right now I don't want to mess with it.
5.1.1 has been the single best update in its lifespan thus far.

Sounds like devices act differently with the update . And what about battery life with you ?

Find a solution to minimise this lag , i flashed the stock rom 5.0 after a factory reset then let the phone update to 5.1.1 OTA , the lag not go away but at least it minimised

hi guys.. just update my note 4 SM-N910F..
i used odin to flash.. i had lag after that so i wiped the cache partition.. nothing else..
it got really better.. lag now is almost unnoticeable.. hope this helps..

Wipe cache partition. Disable fingerprint. Everything will be alright. There will be less to none lag. Tested, and works for me.

Can you describe what kind of lags are there? And have you disabled fingerprint? ?

Delay when opening apps

So I've had this issue with both my S7 and S8 where whenever I click to open certain apps from my home screen, there's a noticeable delay between when I touch the icon to when the app actually opens.
This most notably happens on the Facebook, any and all internet browsers, the Play Store, and the Google app.
The thing that confuses me is that no one else seems to report this issue, nor have I experienced it on other brand phones.
Has any one else experienced this or have any ideas for a solution?

Your not the only one I experience it on both my S8+ and Note 8....I don't know why

Glad to hear it's not just me. When I've mentioned if before, everyone just tells me I have a defective phone, which I don't.
At times it feels like Samsung phones are big diesel engine trucks - powerful, sure, but it takes them a while to really get moving.

I'm thinking it's either touch wiz or a common app..because my before i installed my apps on my note 8 it was super smooth

At the moment I have HTC U11(my daily driver) and as soon as I tap the shortcut, the app opens. When I compare it to my S8, I see the difference. I believe it could be Samsung's TouchWiz

Apparently it goes deeper than that because even when I use Nova launcher, the problem is there.
I also wonder if this is a problem that's only on the Snapdragon version, as I never remember my Exynos-powered Note 5 having any issue.

Possible, but U11 is also on the same Snapdragon 835, but I do believe in my case at least, U11 has UFS 2.1, but my S8 has UFS 2.0. I do see the difference when apps get installed or updated. U11 is doing it faster.

I'm not really knowledgeable enough to make these kinds of guesses, but maybe it's like a kernel issue? Because obviously different companies have different results with the same processor, so maybe Samsung just has poor optimization?
Either way, it just feels like a really unnecessary flaw for the phone.

I would have said Yes for some big apps like heavy title games but for the ones you've mentioned(Facebook, Google, Store and etc), those are actually the fastest to open for me similar to system apps' speed.
PS. I'm the type of person to clear all recent apps and turn off the phone like 5 times a day because I'm a little OCD about an apps that might drain the battery. Lol

I only turn my phone off once a week, but I've tried pretty much every combination to see if it fixed the problem. Cleared apps a lot, "locked" the problem apps in memory to see if that helped them load faster, etc.
Nothing really seemed to make a difference.

If you want it to feel "faster'' you can go into developer options and turn off the animations for opening and closing the apps. Its a "fix" but in reality it isnt doing anything different. Its just a Samsung being a Samsung. If you want a phone that opens and does what its suppose to when you touch it get a Pixel

The developer options thing wouldn't work as this delay happens before the animation even starts.
And but yeah, I do have a Pixel 2 XL preordered.

Hmm.. I'm not so sure that these problems is related to Samsung exclusively..
My problems starts few years ago, when I had Nexus 6p.The same problem continued with iPhone 6s plus and 7 plus, then Galaxy S8 plus and now with Note 8.
I was sure that I had and have a problem with my home Wi-Fi (because as you know, WiFi can cause a lag) but when I saw this thread, well I don't know what to think anymore. I'm running out of ideas, definitely.
I've tried everything ,but no luck.
Any idea, potential solution will be very welcome..

This happens to me when my 4g reception or wifi is really not optimal. Always with internet related applications. Games , productivity etc.

What did you do about that?Solution?

I have to confirm this problem. Definitely, those problems are related to WiFi connection, in my case. My phone flying on LTE.

Does anybody has any idea, what caused these problems?
